CPanel DNSonly Configuration
Jun 9, 2008
I have some question regards configuring a cPanel DNSonly
server. What I have done so far is that I have a VPS in an other DC, in an other country then were my servers are. cPanel DNSonly is installed and right now I am wondering have I done it all in a proper/correct way and how can I test it to see if it will work without bringing server down of course :-)
I made all servers in the cluster on the DNSonly server the DNS role to Standalone, is that ok, and if not why???
Will the DNSonly server then operate as the backup? On the dedicated server side I added it in the cluster and told it to synchronise changes. So I assume the dedicated server will send changes to the DNSonly server, is that correct?
If I make all servers on the DNSonly (VPS) instead of Standalone to status: Synchronize changes, will all servers get from each other as will in that cluster all the zonefiles?
Sorry, I am a bit in the dark with this :-)
Can I change the second name server on each dedicated server to point to the main IP of the DNSonly server? the VPS main IP.
What can I do to test it for correct working?
Is it a good thing to have a second VPs geographic other side of world to do the same with, will that help in more reliable dns and even faster to find websites for my customers?
The latest cPanel DNSonly version doesn't allow me to view the CSF firewall to display, It is working, but nothing to configure from the WHM, I can of course set the firewall specific rules, but one of the VPS hosters recommend to run without firewall as he said nothing to be worried about? Any advice in this? is that true?
is cPanel DNSonly a good solution for a redundant DNS? Are there any other easier options for a cPanel/WHM based config?

Thew initial setup process for my future web hosting company will require a redundant dns setup. I was thinking of having two servers from softlayer (one on the east coast and the other on the west coast) being used as the dns servers (ns1.mydomain.com & ns2.mydomain.com). With one other server for handling the shared accounts, of course adding more servers (as needed) to the cluster in the future. Just wondering if this is the best possible way to setup for having only two name servers (with redundancy) for all shared account servers with my fleet. As well, I was thinking a dns only server wouldn't need to be that powerful, but I would like to be prepared in advance if you feel a strong server would be needed to handle the loads for all the shared accounts on many servers.

It does not seem like it does it out of the box.
Any way to add a /24 to the DNS cluster (cPanel DNSonly) for reverse DNS?

I'm running low on space ever since switching to incremental backup. I don't want to switch back to the full backups because the gzip was killing the server for an hour every night...
I have the following setting turned on:
Backup SQL Databases : "Per Account and Entire MySQL Directory"
Will I get a full backup if I just do "Per Account" or am I missing something if I set it that way?
I have some extra space on The Planet's NAS backup at /mnt/backup but not enough for the full backup. If I could split the backup in two that could work as well.

Is it possible to change all the addon domains in a cPanel account from :fail: to :blackhole: without having to change each domain manually?
If your wondering why they need to be changed to blackhole, lets say that somebody has a lot of inbound spam which is filling up the mail queue.
