Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Protect Sendmail From Unauthorized Spam On Wordpress

Jul 11, 2015

In the past we disabled sendmail in Plesk to prevent spam from using the contact form of Wordpress sites to send unauthorized spam emails. Because of this, password reset emails do not work.

A few questions:
1. Is it safe to enabled sendmail for scripts in Plesk?
2. If its best to disable it, what is the solution for enabling Wordpress password reset without the need of using send mail?

One site was hacked, but I am not sure if Wordpress send email can be manipulated from outside the Wordpress site, or if it happened because the outside user brute forced their way into the admin to send these spam emails.Here is the Wordpress error that came up when resetting the password to a username:

The e-mail could not be sent.
Possible reason: your host may have disabled the mail() function.

Plesk 11.x / Windows :: Move Spam To Spam Folder Not Available?

Oct 17, 2013

Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1
Panel version 11.0.9 Update #59, last updated at Oct 3, 2013 02:06 AM
MailEnable version 5

I see in the plesk documentation that the screen to enable SPAM filtering for an individual there is an option to "Move spam to the Spam folder". I don't see that option so I am wondering if it is only available on some versions of Plesk, or in combination with certain mail servers. How to make that option available?

PHP & Wordpress

Jun 18, 2007

Just logged in to Spam Karma 2 (for wordpress) and noticed this message inside ht e2nd chance Captcha Check of Spam Karma 2:

Your install of PHP seems to be missing the GD library (or a more recent version is needed). You should ask your host to update the GD module for PHP and disable the Captcha module until then.

Can we get our server management company to install this? More importantly, wanted to know the risk of installing the GD library. It's not going to cause any critical things to break is it?

Wordpress CPU Usage

Nov 2, 2009

For some reason, one of my clients wordpress blog is using 100% cpu on a php process per page load. To clarify, the first time you load the page it is very slow, and uses 100% cpu for the PHP process and then if you reload the page (while it is going slow) it loads very fast. After that is done the normal PHP usage per page load is roughly 1-4% if that.

I'm guessing something in the coding is looping, but I am unsure. What I do know is 100% cpu usage for one page view initially is insane.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix/resolve this issue?

Regarding WordPress Hosting

Oct 23, 2009

I don't have Linux or whatever I just got Windows XP or Vista.

I'm not an expert at creating websites, I find it difficult. I don't want to have to install databases or msyql manually, I just don't have a clue and would rather leave it.

I just know how to use WordPress and I want a WordPress hosted site.

I would like to know if there are any sites similiar to this:
[url]

Which includes stuff like cPanel & Fantastico
[url]

Fantastico looks brilliant as I can simply install WordPress in a few clicks without having to mess with FTP and database/msqyl etc.

Does anyone know any reccomended sites that use Fantastico for Windows Vista which I can install WordPress easily?

(I don't want to use '3ix' as I have seen ALOT of negative reviews)

Wordpress Backup

Jul 19, 2009

I am using version 2.3.1 on one site which I need to import over to wordpress.com However, a long time go the link to the back up options page disappeared and even upgrading does not help to retrieve it.

My problem being that over at the main site you need a WordPress WXR file to import with from a self hosted site. As mentioned that is not an option and I must have it imported somehow. I cannot also access the plugins page.

Supports Wordpress Mu

Mar 15, 2008

I had no problem installing Wordpress Mu with iPower. Unfortunately iPower really sucks for performance (I have paid one full year though so I have to keep them ).

So I have moved to Hostgator but I'm struggling: there are many things that need to be done to be able to install it and I can't even do it myself only the admin can.

At the moment I'm still waiting.

So I'm looking for another webhosting service again - though I will stay with hostgator because of their outstanding support service - just for being able to install Wordpress Mu.

Lighttpd Url Rewrite Help For Wordpress

Jun 4, 2009

I'd like to use lighttpd on my server but it doesn't support url rewrites for wordpress. I have a VPS running on kloxo and i have 4 clients using WP2.71 with permalinks.

After searching i found something really nice:
"
Create a file called /etc/lighttpd/wp-rewrite.conf with the following contents:

url.rewrite-once = (
"^" + wpdir + "(wp-.+).*/?" => "$0",
"^" + wpdir + "(sitemap.xml)" => "$0",
"^" + wpdir + "(xmlrpc.php)" => "$0",
"^" + wpdir + "keyword/([A-Za-z_0-9-])/?$" => wpdir + "index.php?keyword=$1",
"^" + wpdir + "(.+)/?$" => wpdir + "index.php/$1"
)

Then, in your /etc/lighttpd/lighttpd.conf, you should have something similar to this:

$HTTP["host"] =~ "blog.nix.is" {
var.wpdir = "/"
include "wp-rewrite.conf"
}
"
source: [url]

what i want to change is this part:

$HTTP["host"] =~ "blog.nix.is" {
var.wpdir = "/"
include "wp-rewrite.conf"
}

Disable Wordpress RSS Feed

Oct 21, 2009

way to disable my Wordpress's RSS feed, because I have figured out another website just copies my content via my RSS feed.

I have searched and found three interesting results, which actually all 3 do or suggest you to do the same thing.

plugin: disable rss

This works perfectly to disable /feed, but unfortunately /feed/rss will still perfectly work?

I can't see why all those developers just post this, without having actually tested if it really disabled the RSS feed. But can somebody recommend me a good way to disable Wordpress's RSS feed?

Wordpress Reseller Hosts

Jun 15, 2009

I have read 100's of reviews and posts on hosting on who is good and who is bad. As I am sure you are all aware there seems to be nothing near a definitive answer on any host out there.

That said I am asking the community here (as you guys seem the most knowledgeable and impartial) for recommendations.

I am looking for a reseller account that I can use to sell hosting packages for (primarily) wordpress based music sites.

I am currently hosting several similar sites via a non-reseller account at site5. They have been a bit hit or miss over the years I have been with them but they are cheap for unlimited resources.

Speed is very important to me as is private name servers and being able to completely brand the offering.

I am not going to have a massive amount of clients in the beginning so a host I can grow with would be preferable.

Also very important to me is the UI of the control panel. For this reason Media Temple is attractive but it looks expensive.

Possible To Run Drupal And WordPress For Two Different Domains On Same VPS

Jun 4, 2008

I have Drupal setup for one domain on my VPS, and it is the only domain I have.

However, I don't use it that much, and I want to purchase another domain for just a small personal site.

I want to run this on WordPress because I am happier with the simplicity that WordPress offers.

However, I want to do this on the same VPS.

Installing WordPress is no issue, but beyond that, I am screwed!

I have no idea what to do as far as multiple sites go, and it took me forever to get the settings right on my Drupal site, but I have read that it is possible to setup separate sites on the same VPS. But reading about it, and finding information about how to do it has not worked out; I'm not exactly sure what to search for on Google, and most guides give directions on using control panels I don't have access to.

I want the drupal site to still be blah.com and then the WordPress.com site to be whatever.com, and I want them to run on the same VPS. I need them to be separate. One person asked the same question on this forum, and I think he got an answer that was how to point a different domain to the same VPS, but again, these will act as completely SEPARATE sites.

Any help, guides, resources that you fine members of WHT could provide would be greatly appreciated. I can get dirty in the command line (although I still am new to all this networking stuff), but if I had someone point me in the right direction, I should be able to get it done.

I know how to point the domain to the VPS' DNS, but beyond that, I am completely lost, and I could use some help.

VPS For Wordpress - PHP Memory Limit

Dec 25, 2008

If I have a two sites that, combined, get about 125,000 page views monthly (that comes out to about 4,000 page views daily). The sites are powered by Wordpress, and it is being used as a CMS, it's not a blog. There are a number of plug-ins in use, on each site, about 10 or so. Each site also has a vBulletin forum in use, although there are rarely more than 10 concurrent connections, if even that many (total of 400 members, only 150 of which are active -- combined stats for both sites).

Currently the PHP memory limit is set to 16M. I'm wondering how high it could or SHOULD go? Granted, I would not want to ask for more than what is available. Would the site speed improve if it was upped to say 128M? Let's pretend that I have a 512MB VPS SLM (no burst). It would have Linux+Apache+Plesk.

Is that enough of a VPS? Would I need to go to 640MB, 768MB, or even 1GB of RAM? Budget is an issue, so "yeah sure, go larger" is not an easy decision. It's also stupid to buy what's not actually needed. Maybe 256MB-384MB would be good enough?

Now then, what if I wanted to use this on a Windows IIS6 system instead? Let's say that I decided to add an ASP.NET wiki or blog to one of the sites. Clearly, that would demand more RAM, and I think Windows itself likes to eat more RAM. The Windows box would also have either Plesk 8.6 or Plesk 9. What's the difference in base RAM use that should be accounted for?

Virtuozzo is desired for either solution, be it Linux or Windows.
My current situation is shared, Windows 2003 Plesk, for these particular sites, and these two specific sites are loading really slow sometimes. Other times I get partial loads, error 500, or pure "unavailable" issues. Other sites, same machine, just fine.

Even the vBulletin forums on the same domains load okay and fast, but the Wordpress sites crawl. It is IIS6, so use of WP-Cache/etc is pretty much impossible. I tried another cache, and it works -- but only for maybe 2 hours at a time, then something happens to it, and the cache quits. It's enabled, but it just stops functioning properly.

My shortlist of the moment includes KickassVPS, FutureHosting, and EuroVPS, for whatever new VPS plan that needs to be gotten. I've been watching the VPS offers threads for the past two weeks. I'm leaning hard to FutureHosting, for this one project, because of the Seattle NOC, since one of the site admins is close geographically, and he always has trouble with the current site's location (other side of the globe, for him).

I'm hoping some of the WHT experts have some good answers for this. I've been researching this for a while, both on WHT and off, but I can't seem to get a clear answer from reading alone.

Host For Wordpress Blog

Jun 25, 2008

I am hosting a Wordpress blog that currently uses 30GB of bandwidth per month. I want to introduce a forum as well so will probably need 50GB per month for now. But would like it expandable to 100GB in the future.

My requirements are:

No hidden CPU Limitations/No unreasonable resource usage restrictions.
Equipped to handle large surges of traffic.
No Overselling, able to use full allocation.

AND PROBABLY:

LiteSpeed - Does it really make a difference?

I have looked at MediaLayer, but they only provide upto 50GB transfer.

SecureServerTech looks good but uptime is only around 99%

At the moment Steadfast Networks looks the best.

My budget will be $20 for 50GB tranfer and $40 for 100GB of transfer, but this is not fixed and I would prefer quality over price.

Control panel does not mater but uptime does.
