Which Volume For MySQL :: /var Volume Or Is It /home?
Apr 28, 2008
On a standard CentOS4 installation do mysql databases get stored in the /var volume or is it /home? Does that mean I need to ask the dedicated server host to create /var really big if I'm expecting my MySQL database to get huge? Or is it better to reinstall MySQL so it puts the databases on the largest volume?

My host has a limit of 1000 emails/hour on shared hosting, so I'm thinking of getting VPS.
I currently send out 5000 emails/day with an average 10kb size (using Mailman).
I'm planning on switching to sympa. I'm wondering what kind of vps specs I'd need to send 20,000 emails/day? 50,000? 100,000?
Or another way of putting it: how much volume could I handle on a VPS with 256mb ram?
How much does the email size affect matters? (I'm wondering if attachments are resource intensive).
What is more likely to be the limiting factor: memory or cpu?

does anyone know if this is safe, i mean when i ordered the server they advertised 500 gb sataII but i never knew that they actually come with 2 hdd and somehow combined into one hdd like raid0
i got one 320gb hdd and second 160 gb which together it count as 500? sounds like a joke to me but anyway They installed this Logical Volume Manager and wondering if its safe or if its same as raid0?

Ive just bought a Power Edge 2600 and I decided to setup the three disks that came with it as raid 5 (within PERC) and installed Win2003 Std. Works great.
But while browsing one of my MCSA books I read that using a raid 5 configuration on the system / boot volume it is next to useless as it offers no redundancy should a volume fail. (With respect to easily booting it back up should a volume fail)
I'm going to use Raid 1 (again with PERC) across two other drives for my exchange data but I'm worried about my system volume. Is my MS book talking about the OS not been able to rebuild data should a volume fail or is this a general rule for raid 5 setups?

I need a relatively cheapy box to serve my thumbnails for my site. Gotta have around 2TB.
I really don't need anything fancy as its just going to serve thumbnails for my main site which sits at PacificRack.
Provider should be in USA and port speed would be 100mbps.

In your opinion, what are the "best" providers of dedicated servers - with a volume/reseller discount? I do not want to go through a reseller or third party myself, so I'm looking for "tier 1" providers.
As a company, we're looking at moving into the hosting industry, as well as consolidating our development clients onto our own hosting. Currently, they're spread out over tens (if not hundreds) of different hosts. This is an absolute nightmare maintenance wise. Previously, our customers chose the hosting - we merely managed their application/service.
Our client base is growing exponentionally, as we are now expanding beyond local/national businesses. We're intending to target the global SME market, as well as going after new start-ups.
Our current estimates put us with needing roughly 12 - 24 (depending on specification) servers to begin with, with our server base doubling roughly every 3 - 4 months.
We're looking at sourcing from more than one supplier, so it would be nice to get some recommendations of providers in Europe, the United Kingdom, America - and various other locations. Providers with a trial option would be nice, so we don't have to drop a "bomb" to begin with, only to be burned in the future.

I'm looking at a project that would need to be located in Panama for server co-location.
It will be very bandwidth intensive, requiring 100 megabits to start and moving up from there. Going with a slightly more "value" oriented provider provided there's a backup (even lower bandwidth) available would be an option, as this application would tolerate limited periods of reduced bandwidth.
Can anybody point me in the direction of some data centers that might be worth looking at? Are there any bandwidth providers down there with a real value focus?
Right now, the best I've seen is $99/megabit from [url] I'm expecting bandwidth to cost more down in Panama, but I'd really like to push this number lower.

My Centos server running Plesk12 is running scheduled backups every sunday 3AM.
The backup is configured so that it's created as a multivolume backup with a volume size of 2047MB.
The backup is placed on my Personal FTP repo (another plesk12 server mounted with big storage).
The backup content is configured to backup server config and content (all).
The problem I have is when the backup is running I can see that it creates the volumes and stores it locally. After it send all the volumes the the external FTP repo it will delete the local (tmp) data. See my attached screenshot for storage health during backup.
Is this behaviour normal? This way we can never run a backup to an external FTP repo when our server passed 50% storage. Is it not normal to:
- Create a volume
- Send it to FTP repo
- Delete volume locally
- Repeat until done

I installed the MySQL binary packages in /usr/local/mysql/ after removing the MySQL RPM package. MySQL is functioning when I executed /usr/local/mysql/bin/safe_mysqld. I reinstalled MySQL before I installed PHP. When I used a PHP script to access a MySQL database, it outputs an error:
Code:
Warning: mysqli::mysqli() [function.mysqli-mysqli]: (HY000/2002): can't connect to local mysql server through socket /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock in index.php on line 2
However, I installed MySQL in /usr/local/mysql, not in /var/lib/mysql. How do I fix MySQL?

i was just wondering can we build our own pc and send it to a data center?
I was planning on just building a cheap pc with maybe an xp3000+, 512mb of ram and stack in 2TB worth of HDD space on it, then just pay for the rack space and the b/w
But, is this possible, is a normal midi tower case to big for this?

I understand the risks of not using a datacenter, but for a smallish site to which uptime isn't key, is it possible to get server-quality bandwidth to my house? (No I don't mean like Gigabit, I mean like upwards of 5mbps)? I'd really like to maintain my own server (probably build one).
I live in Milwaukee, so colocation is, AFAIK, out. And while I can save up for and buy a computer every few years, I cannot sustain $80/month. (I am a middle school student. My income isn't exactly regular.)
So the question... can I get an ISP to let me run a server at decent speeds out of my house? Would its costs exceed colocation or that of a dedicated server?

to replace the current router/firewall/gateway on my home LAN with a lower-end PC running pfSense. (A FreeBSD-based distro with a web GUI for managing pf and the like.)
Since the system will be passing all the network traffic anyway, I'm interested in the possibility of having it watch for anything suspicious. Snort is the obvious choice: I want it to spot incoming/outgoing suspicious network activity.
What I wonder, though, is if there is really a lot of benefit to running this on a home LAN? If it was a big corporate network, I could see wanting it to keep an eye on things, but we only have a handful of machines, and they're all pretty secure.
It'd be running on a ~1 GHz PC with 512 MB RAM... Given that the machine would already be acting as firewall/router, caching DNS server, and running PHP/Apache for the management interface / graph generation, is piling Snort on top of that asking for trouble?

I have a home network as described bellow on the picture (It's in Portuguese but I guess you'll manage to understand it).
My Network Scheme
[url]
I have a domain (let's say abc.com) hosted in AFRAID which is updated by my router since
I have a dynamic IP. I want to have different sub-domains redirected to different computers, for example:[url]redirects to my Desktop computer
[url]redirects to my Laptop 1
My Linksys WRT54GL Router is running Tomato firmware and my Fonera Router is running DD-WRT firmware.
Since I do NOT have a static IP is it possible to make this?

I already have a web server hosting around 70 web sites with FastHosts who charge me around £350 per month. I am a one man band and looking to cut monthly costs. On my web server with FastHosts, I have around 6 IP addresses all used for specific purposes such as SSL and public web sites and all works just fine.
I have just purchased a fast 8mb BT Network Business broadband connection at home along with 13 static IP addresses and built an office on my land that is secure. I want to host my own servers here on the premises that gives my clients the same services they currently get but without me having to pay £350 per month.
BT now tell me that the router they provided cannot route more than 1 IP address to the same machine. The router can only route 1 IP address to 1 PC. This means to achive what I already have would mean purchasing several servers and hosting clients web sites on an individual server.
I have a Windows 2003 server that I know can host all the sites I need including secure and public from one machine. I also know that each secure web site requires it's own IP address and I have those from BT.
Have you any ideas if there are any routers out there that work on broadband connections that can forward more than 1 IP address to the same computer and still work just fine with the BT set-up that I have?

I'm thinking about ordering a VPS from RazorServers, but haven't been able to get ahold of anyone there to answer a few simple sales questions for almost 24 hours - tried calling, the sales extension just rings and rings, their AIM and MSN contacts listed on their website aren't logged in, submitted a ticket yesterday afternoon with no response. None of this gives me much confidence that if I have problems after setup that I'll be able to get ahold of anyone.
Anybody know if this is normal for RazorServers? If so, any recommendations of other good providers of Xen VPSs in the northeast (Philadelphia, New York, Boston, etc.)?
