Web Host Blocked In China

Apr 11, 2008

I used Hostgator but my website was blocked in China.

So do anyone know of any US web host that is NOT blocked in China ? For example, Dreamhost or any web host for that matter?

How To Tell If A Host's Mail Is Blocked By My ISP

Feb 13, 2009

After experiencing some issues with my long-time webhost, I decided to sign up with a new host. I did lots of reasearch, read reviews here and elsewhere, asked the hosts presales questions, etc. and finally settled on a particular host.

After signing up, I never received information about my account. I used the online chat, and the owner said that due to spam sent from their server the day before, it had been blocked by Verizon (my ISP) for a few days. So, I could not receive email from them at my Verizon acct. (which I use, instead of one associated with my website, for everything hosting-related).

Then, I found that I couldn't even access their website anymore. It, too, had been blocked by Verizon.

This made me very nervous so I asked for a refund and received it immediately. The owner of the hosting co. was very apologetic.

So, I went to my second-choice host. Once again, the welcome email didn't arrive. So, I asked them - through a support ticket - when it would come. They said it had been sent. I then found they'd sent me a number of emails, none of which had arrived. Very strange, I've never had a problem receiving mail sent to this email address before.

I asked if perhaps their mail server was blocked by Verizon too (told them what happened earlier in the day). They said no way, then came back and said yes, it was. Again, I asked for a refund. But, it's been 15 hours and I haven't had a reply to that.

I am now looking for yet another host - and would sure like to find one that's clear of this issue.

I've been developing websites since 1999 and have worked with a number of hosts, but this is the first time I've found this problem - and twice in the same day!

After all that, my question is:

Is there some way for me to tell in advance whether a particular server is blocked by my ISP?

Trace If An Email Address Has Been Blocked By A Host?

Jan 31, 2005

Just wondering if there was a way to trace if an email has been blocked by a webhosts server.

My customer gets an automated email when he books online for Qantas Australia (Australia's biggest Airline Company). I have moved them from an Australian based web host to a US based server and host.

Since the host move, these emails no longer go through to the clients email address on the new hosts server.

I got Qantas to send the email through to me which is on a US server also but a different host to that of my client?? But they did not come through to me even.

I got Qantas to send it through to my personal email address (an Australian bigname ISP) which went through fine and I received it.

The auto generated email possibly could be coming through a 3rd party server so I was thinking maybe this server IP has been blocked for whatever reason (if 3rd party it could have been anyone) It is just strange that used to get them OK through the Australian server and still through my persoanl Australian ISP.

So is there a way to check and confirm and secondly if my suspicions are right would there be a process of trying to get the hosts to accept an email from Qantas as this customer doesnt want to have another email account.

China Based VPS

Jul 7, 2008

As you might know if you read my other thread I'm often looking for VPS servers (at the moment Linux only), based around the world.

This weeks challenge for me is a china/hong kong based VPS, nothing too fancy, its only going to be used for small websites and as a proxy service for when we run ranking reports for our SEO clients.

Requirements
- English support if possible, although we do have some Chinese speakers in house.
- 128mb ram, 2gb disk space, 20gb transfer/mo
- CentOS 5 preferred, but any system with a working Yum or similar will do.

Budget
up to €30 a month, but could go higher if i had to.

Payment
-for various reasons we cannot use paypal at the moment, so even if its just paypal credit card processing they won't let us use it. This is something we are looking to solve but its not my dept so i'm stuck with it.

- We can pay by Visa Credit or Visa Debit cards, and if we really had to, bank transfer, but I'm told transfers to china are sometimes very tricky to get right.

I have had a look through the VPS offers forum but most of the china-related posts are from 2006 or so and so aren't relevant anymore.

How To Null Route China?

Mar 16, 2008

I use geoip so that if ($country="CN") { die(); }

This works on my site. But for some reason I still get the occasional IP's through.

I looked at my Lighttpd server-status and I have 600 connections from 3 different IPs that come from China.

I typically use ./route add -host 222.221.81.3 reject as the way to block them, but it changes from time to time. The Chinese are using 90mbps of bandwidth and I want it to stop as they must be directly hotlinking my content.

How to null route large blocks from China? Please note I want to keep Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.

Hosting And Domain Name China

Sep 1, 2008

For my future Chinese Bonsai website I am considering several options for hosting and domain names. Until now I have a US and an Amsterdam hosting (English version in the US and the Dutch, French and German in Amsterdam).

As the Chinese version will be non-political I think I prefer to host it in mainland China. Does anyone here knows a good webhosting that is not too cheap? I need 100Mb and some GB's (I guess under 5GB should be ok) of bandwidth.

Furthermore, I am not sure what domain name to choose. I have 4 options:

1. the name in pinyin (normal text) .com
2. the name in pinyin .cn
3. the name in Chinese characters .com
3. the name in Chinese characters .cn

If I choose to take a .com, would it matter to have this domain name registered in the US? This is cheaper than in China I think; however, it is important to me that the website is seen by Baidu as 100% Chinese (does it matter where a domain name is registered?)

Hosting From China Perspective

Nov 9, 2008

I currently live in China and as most businesses in China do, they host outside of China because of the severe requirements of hosting in China are time consuming to accomplish.

I am currently hosting with godaddy.com and have been happy with them until now. This is the 2nd time my site has been blocked because my site is on a server with a porn site. They switched to a different server once now they refuse to do it again. I also suggested they offer porn-free servers (I would be willing to pay more) but they refused.

Now, I noticed that even godaddy.com is blocked from China. I really think they are missing out on Many business opportunities in China by not offering porn-free servers.

Colocation In China Or Hong Kong - Which Is Better

Nov 21, 2007

I'm trying to get a full rack co-location services in China or Hong Kong. Co-location in Singapore is starting to get expensive...
Per additional 1 Mbps cost about USD 150 onwards. It's not feasible for us anymore.

Anyone has any suggestions which countries is better? And from which IDC? So far Asia Netcom and China Telcom seems to be the better choice. No 2 tier suppliers, e.g. Pacific Internet, they get their co-location from the above too.

Prefer remote reboot

Some or all of the following:
Shanghai, Beijing, Chongqing, Tianjin, Wuhan, Harbin, Shengyang , Guangzhou

OK to have colo and cctv cross-connect in one or more cities - you dont have to do them all.

We do NOT need colo without the cctv availability.

IP Blocked

All of a sudden my sites are not visible to me hosted in the same cirtex hosting account. I have verified that it wasn't spyware messing with my local computer and can view the site via a proxy. They use cpanel and there is no block visible, but there has to be something somehwere. I told them to restart and that did make the site visible until I checked in the morning, Where would a block be if this is it and is there a chance this was done by a hacker?

Blocked By MSN

Jul 19, 2007

I am blocked by MSN. All email messages directed to any @hotmail.com address is rejected, here a typical message:

A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:

name@hotmail.com
SMTP error from remote mail server after MAIL FROM:<user@mydomain.com> SIZE=1802:
host mx3.hotmail.com [65.54.244.200]: 550 Your e-mail was rejected for policy reasons on this gateway. Reasons for rejection may be related to content such as obscene language, graphics, or spam-like characteristics (or) other reputation problems.

I have never spammed nor sent similar content as that listed above.

My host provider says they are contacting MSN for an explantion, but time is running and I need to find a solution to this, because I have some customers (hosted in my server) which need to answer to @hotmailers prospects on their product/services.

IP Not Being Blocked Properly

Jun 28, 2009

I need to block a specific IP:
93.6.224.242

It adds fine when I do:
iptables -A INPUT -s 93.6.224.242 -j DROP

However, the IP is still accessing files and pages on the site according to Apache:

When I ban other IP's they are blocked from accessing anything on the server (e.g. it wouldn't even reach Apache level because of firewall), but this IP just isn't banning properly.

SYNFLOOD Blocked

Feb 20, 2008

Recently switched firewalls from APF and CSF, and so far couldn't be happier! But I do have some questions on SYNFLOOD_RATE within CSF.

Currently have a setting for "40/s" and I am still getting many messages in /var/log/messages with *SYNFLOOD Blocked*.

If I enable Synflood checking, the load on the server increases, but the bandwidth usage decreases. But I'm wondering if 'good' visitors are getting turned away?

Is the setting meaning block above 40/s per IP?

Or simply block above 40/s?

Also, does the firewall simply drop the packets above 40?

And is the IP Blocked?

1. I can not enter domain name as "get" parameter. For example, if I'm requesting URL like domain.com/file.php?url=[url] - it does not work. If I'm requesting URL like domain.com/file.php?url=[url](please note it has INVALID extension for TLD) - it works!

2. fsockopen and file_get_contents does not work. I added these settings into php.ini:

allow_url_fopen = On
allow_url_include = On

...and nothing works. I get just blank pages when using these functions.

Server is running cpanel + apache 2.2 + php 5 + APF firewall
