Colocation In China Or Hong Kong - Which Is Better

Nov 21, 2007

I'm trying to get a full rack co-location services in China or Hong Kong. Co-location in Singapore is starting to get expensive...
Per additional 1 Mbps cost about USD 150 onwards. It's not feasible for us anymore.

Anyone has any suggestions which countries is better? And from which IDC? So far Asia Netcom and China Telcom seems to be the better choice. No 2 tier suppliers, e.g. Pacific Internet, they get their co-location from the above too.

Good Colocation Service Provider In Hong Kong

Nov 15, 2007

our company just decided to buy two servers in Hong Kong and colocate them there. Does anyone know a reputable hosting company (data center) in Hong Kong that offers colocation service?

we hope the hosting company/data center can buy the servers for us - probably give us a few choices with different configurations and prices so we can pick two middle level servers. Is this something a typical data center/hosting company can help us with?

up-time is not critical for our website, but we want a hosting company (data center) we can work with for many years, therfore it has to be a stable and reputable (maybe large) company/center.

Hong Kong Bandwidth

Jun 3, 2007

I am looking for different bandwidth providers in Hong Kong.

I am mainly looking for dedicated international bandwidth. I am currently able to acquire bandwidth from PCCW for about $750 HKD ($95 USD) per month per mbit and $300 HKD ($38) per month per mbit from Deutche Telecom (Only for 100mbit commitment).

First of all, are there any thoughts on Deutche Telecom BW in the SEA area? Does anyone know of a better price / provider in HK?

I can purchase up to about $16,000 HKD (nearly $2000 USD) per month on international bandwidth.

As for the data center, i would prefer to route the bandwidth to my own small data center but if anyone can find better deals available only at a specific place.. then I am open to suggestions.

I am NOT interested in shared bandwidth providers unless it is not too oversold and unmetered truely means unmetered.

China Based VPS

Jul 7, 2008

As you might know if you read my other thread I'm often looking for VPS servers (at the moment Linux only), based around the world.

This weeks challenge for me is a china/hong kong based VPS, nothing too fancy, its only going to be used for small websites and as a proxy service for when we run ranking reports for our SEO clients.

Requirements
- English support if possible, although we do have some Chinese speakers in house.
- 128mb ram, 2gb disk space, 20gb transfer/mo
- CentOS 5 preferred, but any system with a working Yum or similar will do.

Budget
up to €30 a month, but could go higher if i had to.

Payment
-for various reasons we cannot use paypal at the moment, so even if its just paypal credit card processing they won't let us use it. This is something we are looking to solve but its not my dept so i'm stuck with it.

- We can pay by Visa Credit or Visa Debit cards, and if we really had to, bank transfer, but I'm told transfers to china are sometimes very tricky to get right.

I have had a look through the VPS offers forum but most of the china-related posts are from 2006 or so and so aren't relevant anymore.

How To Null Route China?

Mar 16, 2008

I use geoip so that if ($country="CN") { die(); }

This works on my site. But for some reason I still get the occasional IP's through.

I looked at my Lighttpd server-status and I have 600 connections from 3 different IPs that come from China.

I typically use ./route add -host 222.221.81.3 reject as the way to block them, but it changes from time to time. The Chinese are using 90mbps of bandwidth and I want it to stop as they must be directly hotlinking my content.

How to null route large blocks from China? Please note I want to keep Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.

Hosting And Domain Name China

Sep 1, 2008

For my future Chinese Bonsai website I am considering several options for hosting and domain names. Until now I have a US and an Amsterdam hosting (English version in the US and the Dutch, French and German in Amsterdam).

As the Chinese version will be non-political I think I prefer to host it in mainland China. Does anyone here knows a good webhosting that is not too cheap? I need 100Mb and some GB's (I guess under 5GB should be ok) of bandwidth.

Furthermore, I am not sure what domain name to choose. I have 4 options:

1. the name in pinyin (normal text) .com
2. the name in pinyin .cn
3. the name in Chinese characters .com
3. the name in Chinese characters .cn

If I choose to take a .com, would it matter to have this domain name registered in the US? This is cheaper than in China I think; however, it is important to me that the website is seen by Baidu as 100% Chinese (does it matter where a domain name is registered?)

Hosting From China Perspective

Nov 9, 2008

I currently live in China and as most businesses in China do, they host outside of China because of the severe requirements of hosting in China are time consuming to accomplish.

I am currently hosting with godaddy.com and have been happy with them until now. This is the 2nd time my site has been blocked because my site is on a server with a porn site. They switched to a different server once now they refuse to do it again. I also suggested they offer porn-free servers (I would be willing to pay more) but they refused.

Now, I noticed that even godaddy.com is blocked from China. I really think they are missing out on Many business opportunities in China by not offering porn-free servers.

44U+ Colocation Value

Oct 4, 2009

Is there a "premium" for colocation space in cabinets which are taller than 42U? I'm putting some cabinets into a datacenter cage, which I will lease to 3rd parties as colocation cabinets, and there is plenty of height below the ceiling (about 290 cm). I could put in 42U cabinets, but I could go taller, up to about 48U.

The cabinets will have about 10 kW delivered to them (8 kW usable per cabinet), but the UPS is sized for an average load of 5 kW per cabinet. Cabinet depth is 1200 mm. There will be cable tray 10 cm above the cabinet.

If you were going to colo 5 kW of equipment (average) per cabinet, would 48U cabinets have value to you over 42U high cabinets?

US Colocation?

Jun 13, 2009

I'm with is looking to colo 2 x 1RU servers in the US, so looking for suitable colo facilities.

We definitely want to buy, own and manage the servers ourselves, so we're after colo & bandwidth, not server rental.

As we're new to colo in the US, any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Servers will be 2 x quad core CPU, 8GB RAM, 2 x SAS HDDs, 1 x PSU, so we'll obviously need a facility able to provide the required power at a reasonable cost.

We'll need 4 network points, 2 for each server (1 Internet, 1 LOM).

Bandwidth wise, we're expecting to start with low demand, but grow steadily over the next two to three years.

Ideally we're after flat rate bandwidth in the order of 512Kbps - 2 Mbps, aggregated across the network points, with no excess usage charges.

95th percentile billing is also an option, but less preferred - we'd much rather know we have a fixed monthly OpEx, instead of the unpleasant surprise of a large excess bandwidth bill!

We're happy to look at other bandwidth options, so long as they provide a fixed monthly cost, and let us scale at a reasonable price, as we need it.

We'll like a /28 of IP space - 8-10 usable, but may be able to get away with a /29 if it's the make or break decision.

US Colocation

Oct 9, 2009

I've recently acquired a 1U rack mount server from eBay. I believe it kicks some butt...and now I am thinking about looking for a colocation provider to host it for me.

It's for my own websites, not web hosting or storage. I don't need any sophisticated control panel, as I've pretty much made my own. I only need enough IP addresses to have my own name servers and one for all of my websites (I don't need each site to have a unique IP). I don't need any management help as I can manage my own servers. A simple data center control panel with the ability to hard reboot my server would be nice.

However, if the provider charges anything above $70-$80, I can just rent a dedicated server for around the same price. I know the dedicated server would not have the same features and hardware as my server, but if I'm providing the server, why should I be charged the same amount as if they were providing me with a server?

DNS And Colocation

Apr 22, 2008

I'm trying to figure out my whole DNS situation now that I switched over to colocation. I have 2 servers, one hosts multiple sites and the other is just a backup.

I'm not sure what to do with DNS hosting. I could either host my DNS on both the servers (ns1,ns2 main server ns3,ns4 backup server). Does this mean if the main server goes down (ns1,ns2) it'll start using ns2,ns3? If so, can I just have ns2,ns3 point to my backup server IPs and traffic will just resume on the backup of the main server goes down?

If I go with a service like DNSMadeEasy.com, can I just point my main domain's name servers to ns1.dnsmadeeasy.com, ns2, ns3, etc.. and then point all my other domain's name servers back to my main domain OR would I have to point all my individual domains to dnsmadeeasy's name servers?

New To Colocation

Jan 8, 2008

I have several servers on datacenters.

I was wondering, I always did, that is would be so much nicer to own the hardware. I looked for colocation prices in the past but the prices where allot higher then to rent from a datacenter.

Is this really so?

Is best to buy the hardware and send it to a colocation service or to rent a specific harware.

The colocation prices are normally per Mbit, that means there is not montly GB limits, you can go as fast a the switch allows?

How can you test if you are really getting the speed, any guarantee.

Also what happens if a hard disk fails? Do you have to buy one on overnight and send it to the datacenter? They will charge you for installation i suppose.

Colocation In The UK

Jul 1, 2008

We are looking for reviews of colocation companies offering quarter racks at BlueSquare, or another data centre in the south of England. We are based in Dorset and as far as we can tell the nearest data centres are in Bournemouth (not open yet), Southampton (don't know too much about those) and Maidenhead (BlueSquare, where we currently colocate a couple of 1U servers).

Companies we have been considering are connexions4london, a1isp and netrino but we are a bit short on information about their reputations. Reliability is the single most important thing to us, we are not necessarily looking for the cheapest, but for somebody with a good history of service level.

Can anybody tell us about their experiences with any of these companies? I heard about some trouble with Netrino last year but nothing recent, and also a that a1isp use netrino, can anybody confirm or deny that? We have also spoken extensively with connexions4london but we would have to sign up for at least a year - which we would be happy to do if we knew their service was great.
