Dec 8, 2008
i'm trying to get a graphical interface for a VPS I recently bought. I'm currently running Ubuntu Minimal 8.01. I've read some instructions on how to install the GUI, and VNC. I cannot get this to work, does anyone have any insight?

I would like to understand what is the difference between VPS and a VDS. I understand they sound the same, however from a cost stand point VPS is way cheaper than VDS, and I am not very sure of the reason.

I am currently with the planet and am happy with them, however as part of a new venture I need to gather a list of hosts as well as the planet that will be able to cater to the ventures needs and go to tender with the requirements.
ThePlanet offer something called a virtual rack. This is cheaper than renting a dedicated rack, allows for Gb networking but doesnt not allow for a SAN. Do other providers offer something similar? The cost of putting a machine on the virtual rack is not that much more expensive than just renting the machine. I guess there isn't too much to these set-ups to be fair.
If not, then we are looking for dedicated racks, with the ability to host a SAN at some point, but starting off with say 3 servers (2 web servers, 1 storage server with raid5 6Tb of hdd). These servers will be dealing with network cameras although I don't think that many will be streaming at once but the network capacity does need to be there.
Who's door should I be knocking on to find out some prices?
One final thing, should I bother looking for co-lo providers as well? We are in the Uk but not precious about our host being in the same country at all (it would be nice but uk prices are ££). Really, all we would be able to do with co-lo is buy the hardware outright to save price as we are not interested in looking after the hardware.

I am looking for a reliable managed VPS host which has servers/or is based in the UK. I am transferring a high traffic site, and I'm looking for recommendations for a host offering the following:
-Managed VPS
-Reliable servers
-Good support, with native English language staff
-U.K. based data center
Any suggestions for hosts would be greatly appreciated.
Has anyone had experience with clustered.net as I have seen they have a package?

I am "simply" looking to run a Joomla! community site with an estimated 250 - 500 and then eventually up to 1,000 users onine at one time. The main attraction will be the user forums and profiles. I don't plan on having any videos or anything like that, but I will install a mambot that will integrate Google Video, etc.
I am trying to pick a VPS provider and from what I have read so far, I have kind of narrowed it down to a few places:
Spry.com
vpslink.com
knownhost.com
mediatemple.net
From reading alot so far, I would imagine I would need at least 256-512MB of RAM. Plesk sounds like a good control panel since I won't be reselling any of the space. Webmin sounds too hands on, and I know a little bit, but not a lot. The backup option that comes with Spry.com sounds tempting, but VPSLink has attractive price points. Mediatemple.net also gives you 1TB of bandwidth, a very attractive option.
I am "simply" looking to run a Joomla! community site with an estimated 250 -
As long as the site can run MySQL, I am happy. Joomla!, statistics software (any suggestions) and WordPress and that is about it as far as applications.
Any suggestions on what plans or who I should go with? My budget is about $t50 a month.

The subject line pretty much sums up my major problem. My site has been intermittently slow (somtimes slow, sometimes not) for... like since I can remember. So my site isn't that big
Sometimes for me it takes forever to load a vbulletin page, or even the main page of the site. I thought I had found the problem (a mysql-intensive script), removed it, improved things quite a bit, but there is still a long way to go!
Many site users report the same exact things.
"The site is sloowww" ...
"It wasn't slow yesterday but it is today" ...
"Today it's really fast, but last week I was having problems pulling up pages".
Its fustrating becase this is a VPS, and although I know how to use Cpanel, WHM is really big and I am not sure what I could do to speed up my website or to even begin to locate any potential problems.
My site is basically Joomla CMS, vBulletin BBS and 4images image gallery. The later two use a common user database. My current mysql usage is 327.55MB in total. Apache 1.3.34, PHP 4.4.1 and MySQL 4.1.19-standard. Powered by WHM/Cpanel & Virtuozzo.
What should I do? Where can I start? Where can I look?

I'm just wondering if people could point me in the direction of cheap VPS's - like under $10/month, but ideally nearer $5/month if such a thing exists..
I'm looking for one to host slave DNS so I obviously want it to be fast and reliable but I dont need it to be 100% mega reliable in the sense that an outage here and there wouldn't be the end of the world as there will be no web sites hosted on it.
What is the cheapest VPS out there?

Question about IP's on VPS plans
A lot of providers say "2 IP's included" or something to that effect when advertising their plans.
What exactly does this mean? The number of dedicated IP's? The number of websites you can host?

At the moment I run a small membership site. The site mainly consists of creating, downloading a lot of files using fwrite (Based on what the user enters).
Last months stats were just under 30GB of data transferred.
I'm currently with HostGator Business Plan ($12.99/month).
I run a LOT of database connections per minute. I am looking to increase the size of my membership site at which point it will be likely that I am running at least 1 DB connection per second.
Can anyone recommend me a decent priced VPS/Dedicated server for my needs?
The usage will probably be around 50GB/month.
HostGator have shutdown my site a couple times last month due to excessive number of running processes (Limited to 25) so I have decided to leave them.

I am completely new to VPS. Currently I have a website on shared hosting, but I'm starting getting problems with it: more precisely CPU exceeded and "slow MySql queries" problems - though MySql code is top notch. Traffic is about 100 G a month, and users' number growing day by day.
It seems I do need a VPS now. But since I am all new, I need to ask if a VPS account provides:
- MySql databases
- Cron jobs
- etc.
Basically, this question translates into this: does a VPS account offer everything else a shared hosting offers, and in addition guaranteed ram?
PS: I do need a CPU guarantee (don't know the exact name) meaning that if my processes get close to RAM limit, all processes are automatically diminished so that the site is still running... very slowly but running... (rather than killing the site)PS: I tried to find the VPS offers link as I am trying to get to see the current VPS offers of several companies, but can't find it. Do you mind giving the link?
Thank you, and sorry for the mess... I know I might be a pain in the a**, but I've got to ask in order to learn... You guys had a starting point as well, right?

I have a dedicated server with iWeb, but due to revenues being cut short, I'm in search for a new host. Possibly a VPS host that isn't expensive or a shared host.
Anyways.. I'm looking for a good host (nothing like the oversellers at Dreamhost) that would work for me.
I'd be hosting some domains-- about 10. Three are majorly active, 1 is moderately active, and the others are hardly active.
I've tried Dreamhost's shared hosting (along with a PS from them) and that night (my first night with them), their servers went down. HostRefugee, tried them, the server couldn't handle the load and was quite slow. (may be due to coding)
So yeah, suggestions? I know how to setup a VPS if needed.

So you may have noticed im starting a few threads..
my boss told me that he wants to expand our market into hosting
im going to be putting some servers togeter and starting from scratch so to say
im guessing that we will onlybe hosting under our own name....
but i figure i should touch down here...
how would one start with VPS?
you run special software to allow your clients to manage all their clients?
do you give them a server to RDP into and manage from there?
VPS was largly overlooked in our meetings but i've always found them to be very nifty =-D

I already have a great reliable Linux VPS from WiredTree. They are awesome service. Too bad they don't offer any Windows VPS.
Anyone have any suggestions for a good Windows VPS? I don't need it managed much. It just has to be secure and offer mysql. A panel would be nice but not really needed. Also I would like the VPS to have a good and fast setup time too.

I had been looking for an affordable VPS plan. Luckly I found this one at digitallinx.com. It costs me $5 a month, I installed mysql, apache, tomcat and they have been running smoothly with this VPS instance. To get a similar plan, it could cost at least $30 a month from other big providers like 1and1 and godaddy. Also their support is timely and very helpful.

I am writing a few articles about Virtual Private servers and their advantages over regular shared hosting or dedicated servers.
As such Im looking for some case studies from users of vps who found that a vps hosting option was particualrly right for them and why.
Often a couple of sentances to illustrate your point will be enough for me to work with. Naturally there will be a link to the site that your vps was useful if you wish.
Please feel free to reply here or pm me your experiences.

I've a backup on another server and wish to copy that database onto the new server.
Is there any easy way of doing so?
I can only access the VPS (backup) via it's IP and SSH is working fine. PhpMyAdmin on the server is playing up, as well as a lot of other php-mysql applications.

Hi, is anyone know the advantage of VPS hosting vs shared hosting? I found a cheap VPS plan at in2net.com. I can get 15G space, 200G bandwidth and 256 RAM for $9.95 a month. My site starts getting a lot of users, it might be an issue with shared hosting. My site also hosts a forum, and currently has 1000 unique visitors and 8000 pageviews daily. Sometime the forum has 30-50 concurrent members.
So, I'm just wondering in my case, wihch one would you choose, VPS or shared hosting? since they are the same price. I don't know how to manage servers, but my friend has a unmanaged server at theplanet, and he hasn't managed the server at all since he had it. So, if a VPS host comes with all the scripts installed, in this case, it doesn't require any management, am I right?
oh, one more quesiton, is the plesk control panel works like whm panel? where each client has his own control panel?

Since ditching the sinking boat known as the USS Hostchum, I found AquariusStorage. Initially I wasn't all that interested in their service as the VPS offerings were something new that Aquarius was doing and I had no clue as to how overloaded their servers were (OpenVZ based). After having the a4 package (1GB dedicated RAM, 1.2GB burst) for a few weeks now, I forget that I'm even on a VPS!
Ryan has been there for everything, even the small issues that he had no reason to help me fix
(unmanaged). From my initial live chat with him, he never lied about any of the specs and went as far as telling me that they had *just* opened up their VPS offerings. Have read plenty of positive things about AS's shared/resellering services and thought meh, lets give them a try. No matter what I throw at the VPS, it handles it as if its a bug hitting the windshield of my rocket.
Support: 10/10, replies were within 30 minutes, if there wasn't a reply then the issue was already fixed. Had a DDoS on the node I was on around midnight, Ryan was up and on the issue before I even got a ticket in to him (I was up late working on the VPS and noticied probably within a minute of the DDoS happening).
Uptime: To date, 100% uptime of the node (with the exception of the DDoS, which was dealt with within 20 minutes).
Performance: WOW! Ryan and the guys at Aquarius sure know how to build a VPS node! Nothing but praise for the service I'm getting. Fairly certain they aren't overloading their nodes either as they have had plenty of time to pack my node to the fullest since I've had service with them, and it still performs just as it did when I bought it, heck its better! Orignal unixbench results were in the 220's, one I ran this morning reported 370
Overall: Ryan knows his stuff and the support is above excellent. If you're looking for a professional host, look no further! Personally, I'll be upgrading to the a6 package as soon as I have a need.
