Subdomains Not Working At All
I have one domain that no matter what I do, cant use subdomains.
I create test.domain.com, john.domain.com, etc, they simply dont work.
httpd config shows:
Code:
# DO NOT EDIT. AUTOMATICALLY GENERATED
<VirtualHost SERVERIP:80>
ServerName john.domain.com
ServerAlias www.john.domain.com
DocumentRoot /home/johnuser/public_html/john
ServerAdmin webmaster@john.domain.com
UseCanonicalName Off
CustomLog /usr/local/apache/domlogs/john.domain.com combined
BytesLog /usr/local/apache/domlogs/john.domain.com-bytes_log
<IfModule !mod_disable_suexec.c>
User johnuser
Group johnuser
</IfModule>
ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ /home/johnuser/public_html/john/cgi-bin/
</VirtualHost>
named.conf shows both A entries correct at domain.com.db:
Code:
john 14400 IN A SERVER-IP
www.john 14400 IN A SERVER-IP
The subdomain was created 2 days go, so this is not a dns propagation issue.
Im using latest cPanel RELEASE version, and RHES 4.

Wildcard DNS Subdomains Working, But Existing Subdomains Not
I've set up the affiliate manager from jrox.com for a client of mine. This includes the setup of wildcard DNS so that each affiliate can have username.clientssite.com and have it count their clicks - which works properly. What isn't working properly is that he also has forums.hissite.com, which is loading the main website page instead of his forums. He is using cpanel to add the subdomain, and it isn't failing, so I'm not sure what's going on with it. Here is the relative section from the httpd file. I'm not sure if there is anything else I should do to get these subdomains to work. I'm using Plesk8.1 My domains are registered at GoDaddy (and some at RegisterFly) if I can provide you with any information such as my DNS template, etc...

Subdomains
I know this question has been asked loads of times, but I don't seem to be able to find the answer I'm looking for. I'm looking to host the forum part of my site on another server. The main part of my site is on a shared hosting account. Which is fine. I'm adding a forum to the site, and was planning on hosting this on my VPS account as a subdomain. As my shared hosting package is only small. I've edited the DNS with my domain registration provider and added a A record for forum.mydomain.com pointing to the ip of my VPS account. I then created a account on my VPS for the domain/subdomain. However I don't seem to be able to get the subdomain to work Do I need to ask my shared hosting provider to do anything? or do I need to edit anything on my VPS? The subdomain doesn't appear to be resolving.

SSL And Subdomains
I have a question about SSL certificates and how they function with subdomains. OVERVIEW Right now we have [url]. This subdomain houses our client management tool. PROBLEM We wanted to use an SSL cert on the above domain so I purchased a wildcard SSL. *.domain.com SSL was ordered and setup. However, now when we enter[url]we're seeing the content from domain.com, not secure.domain.com I understand we could use [url]but isn't the point of the wildcard SSL so I can do what I want... access [url]? Subdomains, Multiple Servers
I purchased a domain, domain.com, from GoDaddy. I have 5 servers, 2 running CentOS and Apache, 3 running Windows Server 2003 and IIS. Each server has it's own dedicated IP address, so I can access each site by going to [url] Would I would like to be able to do is set each of these servers up with a subdomain on my domain.com. So I would have [url]going to one server, [url]going to another server, etc. I logged into GoDaddy's Domain Manager. However, it appears that the only form of subdomains they have is redirection. So while I can create server1.domain.com, it merely redirects to [url] I can mask the forward, but this creates problems with the login on the servers because they use cookies. In addition, the address always appears as [url], it doesn't have the "index.html" or "/login/login.aspx" when I click links. The actual links appear as "[url] and not "[url] Is there anything I can do? I want the subdomains to point to a particular IP address, not redirect.

Creating Subdomains Dynamically
I have basic Html and webdesign skills other than that zilch I am working on my assignment for uni. and wanted to know if I can create multiple sub domains when I am hosted with a webhost. I want to be able to do the following:users can sign up and get a subdomain of their choice. users are allocated a limited webspace The access to file types need to be controlled. In the sense that users can only upload/download certain file types like html, htm, jpg, gif, zip etc. Users can have forms that work only within their subdomain. for example the domain name is www.webworld.com the user signs up for [url] where "mysite" is the subdomain. the user can have a form at [url] This form should not affect the other subdomains hosted by users. Just in case someone screws up the entire site should not be down. Is this possible? if yes, any pointers on how I can go about getting this done? Would the webhost help with setting this up? Any good webhost I should consider for such a setup? Any other things I should consider like data transfer / bandwidth Would this be a very expensive affair?costs?

Subdomains And Using Multiple Hosts
I have a VPS (full DNS control) where I host my main site, call it mysite.com. I want to add a forum, but I'd like to host the forum elsewhere in order to separate the forum (open source, potential hack target) from the site and gain some security through encapsulation. I don't expect the forum usage to be large for the time being, and so I expect to be able to run it at just about any shared host. My question is, what do I need to do in order to transparently host forum.mysite.com with another host? Can I do this with shared hosting? Specifically, what do I need to ask my host for in order to be able to set this up? Is this a CNAME or an A record, and what do they need to do on their end for it to work? Will a shared CPanel host do this?

Symlink With Wildcard Subdomains
I'm trying to create a symlink (ln -s) in SSH with the goal of having a php-file to be able to be reached from my wildcard subdomains "username.domain.com". The reason is because of XMLHttpRequest that resides in the php-file. When trying to access it from username.domain.com I only get an error, because of the cross-domain issue. Anyway, I got the suggestion of creating a symlink on the file system, but I can't really get the symlink right... Where should I place it on the file system? This is the path to the script; Code: /home/web2753/domains/domain.com/public_html/ajax/status.php I tried creating the symlink in various places, like in the /domains/ directory; Code: ln -s /home/web2753/domains/domain.com/public_html/ajax/status.php But I don't seem to get it right! If I have understood everything correctly, I'm supposed to create a symlink for status.php so the Subdomains can access it as if it was placed directly under the subdomains. This is what my .JS file looks like (with the XMLhttprequest, this might not matter..?) Code: /home/web2753/domains/domain.com/public_html/javascript/edit.js Code: var cururl = 'htp domain com'; // this forum didn't like this url? function createRequestObject() { var req; if (window.XMLHttpRequest) { req = new XMLHttpRequest(); } else if (window.ActiveXObject) { req = new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP"); } else { alert('Problem creating the XMLHttpRequest object'); } return req; } function handleDivTag(divtag) { var divtag; return divtag; } var http = createRequestObject(); var divhandler = new handleDivTag(null); function sendRequest(ua_id,show,series) { http.open('get', cururl+'ajax/status.php?ua_id='+ua_id+'&show='+show+'&series='+series+'&dummy=' + new Date().getTime()); http.onreadystatechange = handleResponseTwo; divhandler.divtag = ua_id; http.send(null); } function handleResponseTwo() { if (http.readyState == 4 && http.status == 200) { var response = http.responseText; if (response) { document.getElementById('editinfo'+divhandler.divtag).innerHTML = response; } } } Everything works except of the cross-domain issue which I'm trying to overcome by creating a symlink.

Domain Name Server (DNS) Changes With Subdomains
I currently have shared hosting, but am getting VPS with another company. I'd like to keep my domains on my original hosting and direct the domains to the new server. I keep reading about the A record and CNAME, but just don't get it. Does anyone have any experience with this. Do I just put the IP address for the new server in the A record? I just want to make sure I know what's going on before I order my new hosting and find out it's not possible or something. I'm also curious if mail, like myname@mydomain.com will continue to work. Configuring Subdomains In Apache On A Localhost
I'm currently trying to configure apache 2 to handle subdomains. This is on a local machine (not tied to any domain names) and I'm only doing it to research how the final structure of a site 'could' be setup. Basically I have a single install of Apache 2 running. The outcome eventually should be to have specific sub domains that all point to the same document root as the actual domain name. So eventually I will have: http://www.mydomain.com http://subdomain1.mydomain.com http://subdomain2.mydomain.com with both subdomains showing the content at mydomain.com (there is reasoning behind this but I'm not gonna go into that). I have apache setup as follows: NameVirtualHost *:80 <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName daneastley DocumentRoot "C:/Program Files/Apache Group/Apache2/htdocs" </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName subdomain1.daneastley DocumentRoot "C:/Program Files/Apache Group/Apache2/htdocs" </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName subdomain2.daneastley DocumentRoot "C:/Program Files/Apache Group/Apache2/htdocs" </VirtualHost> Now on my local machine, only the top one works - the subdomains dont. if I add the following into my hosts file in windows, they all work: 127.0.0.1 daneastley 127.0.0.1 subdomain1.daneastley 127.0.0.1 subdomain2.daneastley the problem being, that I wish to test this enviroment on the local network. How would I go about having every computer being able to access this? I'm assuming it comes down to DNS stuff.

ASP.net Hosting With Independent Subdomains
I'm a linux guy that occasionally has to work on ASP sites. Maybe I've just been spoiled, but on my linux accounts I can set up fully functional subdomains that are completely independent of the main domain. In other words, a reference to root like "<img src="/images/pic.gif">" points to the root directory of the subdomain, and all my files for the subdomain are located outside of the main domain's directory tree. I realize I can use the whole URL in the reference, but would rather not for ease of portability. Come to think of it, will a windows server recognize a root reference - does it require any special setup? Can anybody recommend an ASP.net host that can handle subdomains like this? MS Virtual PC - How To Access My Localhost (Apache) Subdomains On Guest OS?
I've just downloaded Microsoft Virtual PC and the Internet Explorer 6 Application Compatibility VPC Image containing an XP installation for testing sites with IE6 [url]. Everything works fine, I chose VPC Shared Networking (NAT) and I can access the internet from the VPC as well as my Apache development server which runs on the host OS (Win XP) by going to the host's IP address which is [url] in my case. And here I have 2 problems: 1. I want to access [url]on VPC just by typing [url]. I added the following line to the hosts file: 192.168.52.141 localhost But this doesn't work. Interestingly, any name other than localhost works fine, for example: 192.168.52.141 localhost.localhost or 192.168.52.141 local This is not a major problem but I'd prefer localhost. Any ideas how to do that? 2. And the more important issue: on my host OS I have some development sites which I have set up to be accessed by subdomains, for example [url], in httpd.conf: Code: <VirtualHost 127.0.0.3> ServerName perfekt.localhost DocumentRoot C:wwwperfekt DirectoryIndex index.php index.html </VirtualHost> and in hosts file: Code: 127.0.0.3 perfekt perfekt.localhost And now I want to access this site from my VPC too by using subdomains like this! How can I do that? The address 127.0.0.3 seems to be local to the OS and VPC can't see it. I have tried setting other IP addesses in httpd.conf but nothing outside the 127.x.x.x range works on either OS. I suppose I need to make each of my sites to be seen under a different IP from the outside network so that VPC (which is "outside" the host OS) can access them - then I just set up the appropriate subdomain names in VPC hosts file -

Whenever I try to create a user account I get the following error Sorry, resellers are not permitted to create subdomains of the server's main domain My server domain is www.domain.com and reseller is trying to create a user account like new.domain.com . It was working fine a few weeks back but I think since I upgraded the cpanel and whm, it doesnt allow creation of accounts anymore. Could someone help me to fix this error please? I own the VPS and the reseller and all other accounts.
