Server Software CPU Usage
Feb 1, 2008
I have a dual quad xenon server running Linux that will be used for a video sharing site. Currently it's set up for testing.
I have the impression that although the encoding software is able to use all 8 cores simutaneously I'm not convinced that is what's happening. Can someone suggest software that would show all 8 cores displayed individually in a graph. Something like the way task master on a windows machine does with the performanc tab showing cpu usage. And the second part of the equation is can I delegate for example 6 cores for encoding and 2 cores for streaming the videos?

Since a short while back my server memory usage is 100%. The amount of
visitors decreased so the memory should be lower in consumption than before.
I suspect a newly installed script could have bugs or misuse of the
server by hackers. I don't know how to see on the server what script or
what part makes the memory use so high. I see Apache is very high but
I'm on VPS.
Technical data........

I have never rented a dedi before but have used and continue to use VPS for my websites. With a hostinabox VPS with lxadmin control panel and apache for web serving I have seen idle ram usage at around 100MB. My question is am I going to see a similar amount if I move to a dedicated server ? I ask this because I remember reading somewhere that dedis have a higher RAM usage by the OS compared to VPS. So does a dedi at idle use more RAM than a VPS at idle?

I have a low traffic VPS, with fairly limited resources (most notably only 256mb RAM).
This runs fine for what's currently being hosted - one low traffic site (with 1-10 users on at any time, usually 2 or 3), and several other essentially dead sites. Everything runs smoothly, and generally RAM usage remains below the 200mb mark.
However, I've been contempating setting up a Subversion server on the same VPS, and I'm unsure if this will top it over the limit. Does anyone here have any experience running a SVN server? How memory hungry is it? If I do set this up, it won't be very active, with a couple of checkouts a day, and a max of 2 or 3 users connecting at any one point, more often than not no one will be connected. Can I do this with the resource limitations listed above, or should I start looking at alternatives?

So if a game server used 200GB outbound. How much Inbound would this equate to?

I just moved from a P4 Dual Core (2mb cache) to a Dual Xeon (512k cache) and everything has gone to sh*t.
I had the server optimized/security hardened (for the most part) and last night, I had a RAM upgrade to 4GB.
As soon as the server came back up after the upgrade, CPU usage was into the mid hundreds. RAM usage is fine....
Presently, I'm showing PHP using a ton of CPU. I tweaked mysql a little bit, and that helped slightly.
Also, last night, I had the DC run diagnostics on the RAM and hard drive. Both check out OK.
Here's the specs:
2x Intel Xeon 2.80GHz
4GB RAM
cPanel
CENTOS Enterprise 5.2 i686
PHP 5.x
MySQL 5.x
Exim
When viewing TOP or status in WHM, php scripts use the most CPU. With average CPU load around 60+

a few times, my host contacted me and said that my account is suspended due to high usage of server resources.
I have 3 sites using SMF (a forum script.) I have around 8500 visitors and 3 million page views per month in total.
can this be a reason of high usage?
if it's what's the meaning of terabyte traffic limit ? which you can never use
I asked to my host if they could let me know what's causing high server resources usage. here is the answer:
We do not know which domain or script caused this high usage, it is your responsibility to investigate. I would suggest that you go through your raw access logs to see the most requested pages and then investigate those further. After you find the pages responsible, please optimize them so you are not using so many server resources.
so if a host wants simply to restrict traffic limit, they have a pre-reason under hand.high server usage! yes but how will I know that? how will I trust that it's true?
when I ask why my sites are down, they can easily tell me that it's because of high server usage!

I have server load like 40.
Nothing lags.
Server has RAM usage 20% and CPU usage goes up to 25%
Swap isnt used at all.
Should I be afraid of server crash incase server load goes up to 60 or 80 without ram and cpu usage rising that much?

My VPS host is (for now) still using LxAdmin, but is no longer allowing login to HyperVM for reboots and access to system info. Please, tell me exactly how to use SSH to check the current memory usage on my VPS.
Quote:
Viewing your current resource usage
Log in via SSH, I normally use the Putty client for this.
Commands:
top: your current server load & resource usage.
ps aux: all your processes & which ones are using the most memory/cpu
free -m: allocated memory, usage & free memory
Is the command line really *easy* once you get used to it?

For the past few days, one of the server is causing a bandwidth utilization surge for the entire rack on almost daily basis. It happen for a few minutes and it went off then it will be the same thing again the next day. When the surge is happening, most of the servers on the same segment will be inaccessible for the few minutes.
The bandwidth utilization graph for my rack is recording an abnormal surge from (6mbps --> 90mbps) for the few minutes. My MRTG is showing 2 of the Plesk servers giving the problem but the NOC guys said it the Cpanel that causing the problem.
I tried logging in to both servers but could not find what's the cause for this.

I have a site that is eating up my server resources and need to know what the best solution for this is. I'm thinking of getting another server just for mysql but do not know what specs the server should be to handle the current traffic/database load and have the site run smoothly without slowing down to a snail's pace.
An alternative is to get another server just for the videos being served and leave the database and html on the current server. This is where I'm stuck and don't know what route to take with this.
My current server stats:
Dual Xeon 5130
4GB RAM
250GB
50 Mbit/sec
CentOS 3.9
Website traffic stats:
15,000 visitors/day
150,000 pageviews/day
Serving videos
I've attached screenshots of top and bandwidth usage per day. Hopefully with this information you could tell me if I need another server or if there are any things I can do to the current server to help things move faster.

I have been using Blue Host for years, but recently they kept suspending my account due to performance problem.
I was only running a php forum (phpBB3) and a Wordpress blog. They kept mentioning it is not problem with space/bandwidth, but issues with "Running application causing high load", and the mysql queries from phpBB3 are taking too long.
Now I am planning to add a Ruby on Rails application. I am sure it will cost more CPU usage. What should I do? Will a move to VPS hosting solve my problem?

We are currently looking to move to a new dedicated server provider located in the United Kingdom. The server is solely used to provide an IRC daemon to a large IRC network that receives multiple gigabits of DDoS and PPS. We are currently with another hosting provider who can no longer support us.
Our current specification is DualCore Xeon 2.67Ghz/4MB Cache with 500GB SATA HDD. A good connection and available bandwidth (preferably 3-5,000 GB bandwidth /month) included in the price. We are seeking to move to a new dedicated server host, if you know a company that can accommodate our needs,

How do you prevent people from using different IPs on a machine that has a couple VPS clients on it.
If client A has xxx.xxx.xxx.100-xxx.xxx.xxx.103 and client B has xxx.xxx.xxx.104-xxx.xxx.xxx.105. How do you prevent client B from using client A's IPs? Can't he easily modify the config file for his ethernet device to use an IP that hasn't been assigned to him but is assiged to someone else on the same machine?

For about a couple of days (no configs were changed) I am experiencing high cpu usage from time to time.
At this moment and what I can see is this:
Sites are using low cpu resources, top process is mysql + 1-2 php defuncts replacing each other, after that - httpd requests
Something happens and php are starting to use more cpu thant it should. Cpu top usage shows all php files in all accounts replacing each other (index files, scripts there are like wordpress, forums, etc).
Server crashes... Or I kill all php processes, restart apache and it goes back to normal mode again.
I had the same issue months ago, just cpu usage was even more agressive and much often. After days of checking, I've found that it was
Curl and/or Curlwrappers which were cauisng that. After recompiled apache without them (left curlssl only), cpu load was always stable.

I m currently hosted on a shared host and this is the stat for on eof my site:
Hours CPU Time Execution time CPU Usage Average Memory Processes
0-6 20.46 s 98.86 s 0.24% 2.52 MB 105
6-12 246.99 s 1927.26 s 2.86% 2.46 MB 1328
12-18 373.3 s 3660.48 s 4.32% 2.52 MB 1867
18-24 250.57 s 2800.82 s 2.90% 2.52 MB 1259
So it shows my site uses avg 2.52 MB RAM. This is in shared hostinng plan.
Now suppose I am going for a VPS server with 256 MB RAM, does that mean I will get whole 256 MB RAM for my Site usage or the OS and other application will also consume that amount of RAM.
What I understand that when you go for VPS, the allocated processor and RAM capacity to yur plan will be used by the OS, the cpanel or any other scripts and the Database. So basically they together will consume nearly 256 MB RAM.

My site seems to be quite slow at peak times because it is on shared.
I believe a VPS or Semi-Dedicated would be the best way to go.
I don't have too much to spend and I will post my usages below.
I run vBulletin 3.6.7, and at high peak times around 80 users are online, but that can drop to 30 at low periods.
As I said, I would think that VPS would be the way to go..
I have around 20-25USD to spend per month (maybe if you can assist me in finding an offer/promotion..)
I would need DirectAdmin included and preferably Fully-Managed.
I wouldn't be hosting any other sites, apart from my one with vBulletin.
It is a low budget, but if you can't find a VPS, maybe Semi-Dedicated or a flexible shared package..
