777 Permissions For Www
Let me start off with saying: I haven't had any suspicious activity, nor do I think I was compromised.

I logged in as root, and was simply clicking around my dedicated server and came across a few folders with permissions at 777. ALL are above /public_html

Irregardless, is this safe? I recall reading a bunch of topics on here, that /tmp needs to be hardened. Isn't this also above /public_html?

For one example:
/var/tmp is chmod to 077
..inside is a bunch of sess_ files

Is this folder open to hacking?

I know you're not supposed to use 777 but it seems some scripts just simply won't work without it, what steps needs to be taken to avoid using 777?

Avoiding The Dreaded 777
Just wondering what options I have so that I can finally be rid of the 777 folders and lower them to 755?

Problem, I run several scripts that I assumed require 777 permissions, such as forums and gallery scripts. How else would images/attachments be uploaded to the server?

I`m running a linux vps, however I`m relatively new to server security and admin stuff.

Reason I brought this up, quite a few of my 777 folders on various scripts had some unwelcome php and htaccess files added over the last few weeks. No doubt malicious! I only just discovered them this evening.

I keep hearing about PHP Suexec and other features, but I`m concerned using these migh kill the attachment features of a forum for example. What good is a gallery if we cannot upload anything.

I know there are ways around this, but I need something in laymans terms.

Chmod 777 Vs 755
I've just moved from a reseller account with ResellerZoom, so a VPS with SolarVPS.

When I was with RZ all my scripts could write to folder with the 755 permissions. On the vps I have to alter the folder I want the script to write to to be 777.

Which the is best and most secure?

I think I understand that if a folder is 777 then anyone on the server can write to that folder. So I assume some sort of thing that stops users being able to access folders outside of their own folders is needed? is that right?

777 Permissions/osCommerce - Dedicated Box
I'm running a site on a dedicated box, with no other user accounts. In order to get some of the features for my osCommerce site to work, I have to have a few files/directories set to 777 permissions.

It's my understanding that anyone who gains user access to the server would then be able to write/edit those files and directories, yes? It does not, however, mean that average joe web surfer has rights on them, correct?

So, assuming I keep up to date on security patches, lock the server down as well as possible, and keep my account as the only one on the server, is there any major security issue with leaving those 777 permissions?

I'd hate to close them off, as it would kill some REALLY helpful features, but security is important.

Forbidden /You Don't Have Permission To Access
In my VPS:

I have given to one of my clients a reseller, sometimes, it shows an error, when he enters his Forum:

Forbidden

You don't have permission to access /vb/showthread.php on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

The weird thing is, when that error comes, will appear on all other forums in the same time in his reseller!

I have tried to use some solutions such as :

1- Create .htaccess file and add the following code
Code:
<IfModule mod_security.c>
SecFilterEngine Off
SecFilterScanPOST Off
</IfModule>

2- I increase MaxSpareServers in httpd.conf.

Permission On Windows 2003
I noticed very strange file permission behaviour, which not always intherid child permission from parent. Detailed problem description is below.

I have "c:File" directory with IUSR permission.

If I run one .NET application(exe) from Administrator account and try to create new file with that application in c:File directory, the newly created file with that application do not has IUSR permission.

If I run notepad and save txt file into that directory, it has IUSR permission.

Can anyone explain what is going on? Why file created with first .NET aplication do not inherit permission from folder?

Avenger Permission Denied
I installed Avenger on FreeBSD 6.2 as Anti-Spam and I'm not understand
some configuration.

1- Avenger as me to create a user 'avenger' in group 'wheel' for its program, but when starts asmtpd , it runs under user: root and group: wheel . What is the utility to create this user 'avenger' then?

2- When I run a Debug Mod, I obtain a permission denied error

myserver:/etc/mail># asmtpd --avenge m...@mydomain.com
SMTP-test (6) <== 220 myserver.mydomain.net ESMTP
SMTP-test (6) ==> ehlo myserver.mydomain.net

/etc/mail/aliases.db: bad alias file
SMTP-test (6) <== 250 ok
+unknown (a11) === EOF

accepted by SMTP server:
250 ok

Ok so the error was coming from my "Other group" can't read . I have changed permission to following:

chmod r+o /etc/mail/virtusertable.db

and I obtain this:

myserver:/etc/mail># asmtpd --avenge m...@mydomain.com
SMTP-test (6) <== 220 myserver.mydomain.net ESMTP
SMTP-test (6) ==> ehlo myserver.mydomain.net
SMTP-test (6) <== 250-myserver.mydomain.net
SMTP-test (6) <== 250 PIPELINING
SMTP-test (6) ==> mail from:<postmas...@myserver.mydomain.net>
SMTP-test (6) <== 250 ok
SMTP-test (6) ==> rcpt to:<m...@mydomain.com>
asmtpd: loading /etc/avenger/domains
+unknown (a11) ==> return 250 ok
SMTP-test (6) <== 250 ok
+unknown (a11) === EOF

accepted by SMTP server:
250 ok

It could be a potential security problem if I left "Other" to read virtusertable.db . So my question is: Is there another way to fix this error without changing permission for Other to read virtusertable.db?

You Don't Have Permission To Access /phpmyadmin/ On This Server
Recently, i upgraded my WAMP from WampServer2.0f to WampServer2.0g.

I uninstalled WampServer2.0f and then only installed WampServer2.0g.

I can access [url] and i can see under my tools section that there is a link to phpMyadmin which points to [url]

I get the error: Forbidden - You don't have permission to access /phpmyadmin/ on this server whenever i try to access phpMyadmin.

Additional Info:

My WAMP icon is white.

I tried Restarting all services but nothing helped.

I have a folder called phpmyadmin3.1.3 which is located inside C:wampapps.

The version of MySQL on my localhost is 5.1.32 (How do i know this? I clicked on my WAMP icon, pointed to MySQL --> Version and it displayed a checked mark on 5.1.32).

Did some homework, and people say that there may be a problem with the phpmyadmin.conf file. It's located in my C:wampalias

Can that file be edited phpmyadmin.conf?

I havent tried uninstalling and reinstalling WAMP. I'll do that as a last resort (and i don't know if that will fix things).

Cpanel /home Permission Hardening
Since this got lost (google cache of thread discussion so far)
[url]
im reposting because i think it was an interesting discussion.

I'm setting up a cpanel server for the first time. I was wondering if i could harden the default cpanel permissions for the user folders in /home The idea is to prevent users viewing each others files. Please don't suggest the php open_basedir option as its not secure and doesn't work with cgi based file browsers.

Note I'm using suexec/suphp.

currently new cpanel users folders are created with
group and user ownership and the permissions 755

I was thinking if i changed this to 711 would this break anything?

Could i lock this down even more by changing the group ownership to "nobody" and thus have permissions 710.

Fopen Permission Denied On New Server
I'm migrating from shared hosting to a VPS. I have transferred my files right over, and permissions are all the same as they were on the old server.

The fopen scripts are giving me an error when trying to write to files.

Code:
failed to open stream: Permission denied

The permissions on the file are 644 and it can read from the file just fine. Giving the file world write permissions fixes the problem, but I don't want to do this for obvious reasons.

I think the reason this worked on the shared server had something to do with the apache user being defined differently but I'm honestly not sure. The php file executing the command is owned by the user that owns the document I'm trying to write to (in fact one user owns everything).

how I can fix this without giving world write permissions?

Permission To Link To Someone's Page
I was wondering: say I have a website where users discuss different articles and when a user wants to discuss a specific article, he/she will be able to link to that article and then say what they have to say.

Certainly, copying and pasting would violate the site's copyright but simply including a little link sounds like a legal alternative. Is it really? Or, technically that would still require me as the webmaster, or the user who posted it to request permission just for linking?

I know nobody would care because it only gives more traffic to the site but legally, would permission be needed?
