Multiple Servers 2 NameServers
Apr 30, 2007
I run a small hosting company and i have been using multiple (different) nameservers for different servers, for example...
Nameserver IP
ns1a.domain.com 192.168.0.1
ns2a.domain.com 192.168.0.2
ns1b.domain.com 123.123.0.1
ns2b.domain.com 123.123.0.2
How do i make it so i can have ns1.domain.com and ns2.domain.com pointing to all different my servers?

I have 2x servers with the following os/control panels:
1x Windows Server 2008 running Plesk 9.2
1x Centos 5.3 running cPanel/WHM
What I wish to do is to point all of my domains to the nameservers:
ns1.domain.com
ns2.domain.com
But, the domains hosted could be on either of the boxes above (because some sites are ASP.NET and others PHP).
Each of the above machines are running BIND and I have not yet setup nameservers on either of them. How should I proceed with this?
In addition (for arguments sake), if I then add additional servers how would I then achieve the same?
If there's already stuff around on the forum (I've done a search but found nothing specified to my issue of running a windows and linux box with completely different control panels) please point me in the right direction.

Lets say for example I have 10 servers independent of each other. I want to be able to have only 2 Nameservers, NS1 and NS2 where all the domains should resolve to and then they should be handed off to one of the 10 servers. I dont want to have 20 Nameservers for example NS1 thru NS20 for all 10 servers. That would also be a waste of IP addresses.
I have a few murky solutions in mind. I would appreciate if someone would shed some light on the issue,

Can the same nameservers be used on multiple servers/vps on different geographical locations and if so, how are they setup? That would save me quite some money. Hoping for some input.

Say if I have a domain www.example.com.
And two completely different physical dedicated servers with IPs 11.11.11.11 and 22.22.22.22
Is it possible to make a nameserver,
NS1.EXAMPLE.COM (33.33.33.33)
NS2.EXAMPLE.COM (44.44.44.44)
^^^^^^^^^
(The two IPs of the nameserver have been assigned to server 11.11.11.11)
to point to 11.11.11.11 and have two other name servers
NS3.EXAMPLE.COM (55.55.55.55)
NS4.EXAMPLE.COM (66.66.66.66)
^^^^^^^^
(The two IPs of the nameserver have been assigned to server 22.22.22.22)
to point to 22.22.22.22 and have two other name servers
I am pretty sure this wont work for some reason but I cant figure out why

How can I use:
ns1.domain.com
ns2.domain.com
both with the same IP?
I figured out that since they are both hosted on one server it doesn't really matter if it'll be 2 different IPs or a single one so I decided to be more economic
Only thing is that through Cpanel (Networking Setup -> Nameserver IPs) I can't add two nameservers with the same IP...

Let's say I've got a VPS plan that comes with either 4 or 8 IP addresses (still deciding which to get).
Now let's say I want to set up multiple NameServers within that account. Example:
ns1.mymainsite.com
ns2.mymainsite.com
ns1.anothersite.com
ns2.anothersite.com
ns1.yetanother.com
ns2.yetanother.com
ns1.lastone.com
ns2.lastone.com
Can this be done? Or not?

How to reduce downtime - multiple name servers ?
Say I have two different hosting accounts at two different web hosts. One at host1.com and another at host2.com. In both the hosts I keep the same files. I use an external registrar and use the name servers for one of my domains as follows:
ns1.host1.com
ns1.host2.com
ns2.host1.com
ns2.host2.com
What would happen in that case, if say host1 is down sometime? Will the name servers point to host2.com?
If this could work, then the probability of downtime of a site would become almost 0 .
Google will like this ?
Another question is how to easily sincronize both cpanel accounts?

I have two VPS packages.
Both are running exactly the same stuff - Centos 5.3, cPanel/WHM, etc
One domain (example.com), already pointing to first server (server1)
Nameservers (ns1 & ns2.example.com) are set up in WHM of server1.
I then bought a second VPS (server2). I want to be able to set up subdomains of my main domain (sub.example.com) on the second VPS. I also want my existing nameservers to work for server2.
This way, I can provide subdomain packages to people and utilise both servers, and I can also provide the same nameservers to people regardless of the server they are on.
I went to the clustering section of the WHM's, I enabled, and I can see server1 in the WHM of server2, and the other way around. I selected Sync Changes under DNS Role. However I don't think that's really done anything.
How can I get this to work? Sorry if I've written it in a confusing manner.

I currently have 2 web servers both running the cPanel Control Panel.
Out of the two servers only one is used and the other is just used currently to test scripts. It has come to a stage with the website capacity that I now require both servers to run in con-junction with each other to spread the load.
Questions:
1) There is a file upload service, How would you go about networking both the servers to allow remote removal / uploading of files to different servers. Eg, If user is on server 1 and files are stored on server 2. Also deletion of files etc - The website is programmed mainly in PHP.
2) File updating - The website is constantly being updated and therefore both servers will need the PHP files to be in sync. How would you go about doing this?
Both servers are at the same Data Center location.

We are looking for KVM/IP solution for multiple server. Where we can add the users remotely and give temporary access to the server owners. Once they are done we remove them from access list. So it can be used by someone else.
Anyone know for KVM/IP solution with kvm switch which can solve our purpose of KVM.

I currently have two servers, one is rhel 5 with cpanel, the other is windows 2003 with plesk 8.4
Each server wants you to setup a Hostname... one that is FQDN but not being hosted on that server so I setup a generic dns domain as follows...
SERVERCODNS.COM
Now for the hostname I setup both servers to be use this domain but different prefix... so...
SERVER1.SERVERCODNS.COM
SERVER2.SERVERCODNS.COM
Is this ok? Will I have problems?
My cpanel continues sending me emails nightly that my DNS is routing to another ip?
which bring sup my next question...
Is is ok to NS1.SERVERCODNS.COM, NS2.SERVERCODNS.COM for say the RHEL server and then DNS1.SERVERCODNS.COM and DNS2.SERVERCODNS.COM for say the windows? Is this going to cause problems?
Whats the difference or proper procedure for setting up DNS with my registrar (*ENOM) vs in the control panels they have Nameserver tools?

I have a website.
I have it on 2 different servers.
This is because if the first server goes down for whatever reason, i dont want the site to go down.
To get this to work, is it just a case of adding more nameservers to the domain?...
becuase this doesnt seem to be working... the domain seems to always resolve to the server that is listed last in the list of nameservers...

Has anyway come up with a way to have several servers connected to one external CD-ROM on a USB Hub/network? This could allow a few external CD-DRIVES to handle a whole rack and the possibility of setting the bios via KVM/IP on a server to boot from CD, then it would boot from the CD tied in on the USB "network". Maybe using a USB hub? Or would this cause possible security issues having multiple servers tied in via USB ports?
I would love to have the ability to have maybe 3 or 4 CD-ROMs tied into multiple servers for OS installs remotely without having to actually go into the DC for this. You could put the CD-ROMs on your APC reboot and just turn on the one you need and set the bios to boot from CD (ie: one drive could have CentOS, one could have Windows, etc)
I'd be interested in some ways people have done this or what they use.

What is the best way to run one command on multiple servers. Security isnt too much of an issue as I'll be doing a master/slave type setup, with the master being a system in the office with no ext access.
I'm thinking pssh is going to be quick and easy, what do you use?

A website I am involved with may soon hit a problem due image uploading being stored on only one server. We are unable to find a realistic solution which would allow us to upload images from 1 central location.
The website is programmed in PHP and is on a standalone web-server - currently the images are uploaded to the same directory as the website however we are looking to move the images to another server for scalability.
Is it possible at all to upload using a directory link of some kind, eg, the directory would be /serverip/path/to/images which you would upload to? Or any other realistic approaches that you know off.

I run a vbulletin based web forum ([url] and everything is going quite smoothly. We are currently in the process of getting a partnership with a supplement store.
Basically, our goal is to have our own store for Lean Bulk, but it will be run by a different company, and will be on their server.
Soo, the store database and custom script will be staying on their server, but my forums will be staying on my server. What I want is for the store to be located at [url]or [url]
Either one works for me. However, the tech guy that runs all the stuff for the store, is trying to tell me that this is "impossible." While it might be somewhat difficult, I have a hard time believing anything is really impossible.
The tech says the only thing we can do is have the store located at:
[url]
Personally, I think this looks unprofessional, and would rather stay away from this solution.

I purchased a domain, domain.com, from GoDaddy.
I have 5 servers, 2 running CentOS and Apache, 3 running Windows Server 2003 and IIS. Each server has it's own dedicated IP address, so I can access each site by going to [url]
Would I would like to be able to do is set each of these servers up with a subdomain on my domain.com. So I would have [url]going to one server, [url]going to another server, etc.
I logged into GoDaddy's Domain Manager. However, it appears that the only form of subdomains they have is redirection. So while I can create server1.domain.com, it merely redirects to [url]
I can mask the forward, but this creates problems with the login on the servers because they use cookies. In addition, the address always appears as [url], it doesn't have the "index.html" or "/login/login.aspx" when
I click links. The actual links appear as "[url] and not "[url]
Is there anything I can do? I want the subdomains to point to a particular IP address, not redirect.

I have a server with plesk8 installed. I forsee a time when I shall need either to move to a new bigger server or to add a new bigger server to what I already have.
Problem is, my isp says that PLESK will only work on single server set-ups and can't work in a multi-server environment.

I was talking to my host the other day about configuring multiple servers as a private LAN. I was wondering if anyone has successfully set up a configuration of using separate servers for each task for shared hosting accounts. I.E. Having certain servers as web servers and others dedicated as MySQL servers, e-commerce servers, mail servers etc.
Does anyone do this? I can see it boosting performance.

I have been trying to setup SPF records for all of our hosting servers but need some assistance.
Lets say we have three servers with the following RDNS:
ns1.server.com
ns2.server.com
ns3.server.com
Would we create one SPF for server.com and add it to the DNS zones on each server?
Or should we create a separate SPF for each server?

I'm planning host multiple game servers on a single machine. I'm going to configure my own machine for this purpose. I'm uncertain on how powerful should I build my machine.
I'm going to host resource demanding games like Battlefield 2 and Armed Assault. Both of the mentioned games has a dedicated server application that requires roughly 2ghz of CPU power and 1GB to 2GB of RAM (depending on connected users) to run on.
Base on the above requirements, I'm going to put together a machine with 2 dual core Opteron or Xeon running at 2ghz and 8GB of RAM. The machine is going run 4 virtual servers with the game server application running on them. My configuration uses basic division to calculated the required CPU and RAM on my custom configured machine. Is this a practical approach?
Has anyone tried anything similar with xen? I'm worry about any performance impact that might happen due to overhead or shared cpu & ram cycle latency as game server demands real time performance.
I'm though about doing this because it's cheaper to rent a 1U rack space running 4 game servers than renting 4Us for the same purpose. Care to share experience or thoughts on this subject?
