I'm setting up a VPS for the first time and I was wondering how I should structure things.
I can set up one account for myself with one password, and control all of my accounts (around 20 or so?) with the same credentials. The benefit to this is it easier to manage my credentials, and I can change my password every month or two. With so many accounts I rarely change them.
I can also set them each up as separate accounts like I was used to doing on my shared hosting plan. The benefit to this would be if the one account was compromised the other ones would not be as exposed, and managing everything will be easier.
I guess a third option would be to group most of them under one account, and give the more security critical ones their own account.

We have about 3 resellers on one server and all of a sudden, when I log in to whm and click "Show Reseller Accounts", all accounts show under root.. What's even strager, is that under package colum, it says "undefined"
However, when I click "list accounts", all accounts show and they are properly setup up with the correct package and owner (not all root.. They also show to which reseller they belong).
how to fix the problem when I click "Show Reseller Accounts"?
I have a reseller account with 20 or so accounts using WHM. I now have my own dedicated server loaded with WHM. I want to move the accounts to the new server, but WHM asks for the reseller server's root pass which of course I don't have.
I guy I knew transfered 1 account a few weeks ago, with the information I gave him. Unfortunately, I can't get back in touch with him.
How do I move these accounts?
I have my WHM access on my dedicated server. I have my reseller WHM access on my reseller server, but not root access on that server.
Is it possible to use different MX records depending on the email address? Let's say for [url] I'd like to use Kayako support. Thus I'd need to pipe it with my own server.
I have an account with a shared web host and I use that account to host 9 website under 9 different domains. All the domains are hosted as add-on domains under that single shared cpanel account. Now I would like to do a WHM account transfer from the shared hosting to my own VPS server. But I want all my domains to have its own private cpanel accounts.
Is this possible with the WHM automated account transfer feature? or do I have to create cpanel accounts for each domains in my VPS and upload the files manually?
I would like to have a script written that would allow the VPS accounts on a Linux server to have limited access to the files on the main OS. These files are used to convert videos using a proprietary process prior to streaming. The access would be limited so that the VPS accounts could not change the settings or have direct access for example but would allow them to use the tools to compress their videos
I recently leased my first VPS. I have my master site setup, and 4 other personal sites that I'll be migrating to the VPS. (Later, I'll be hosting customer sites on the VPS as I develop them.)
My question is, what would be the best way to add my 4 other personal sites to the VPS, as addons to the main domain, or give them each their own account and cPanel and manage them separately?
How would you set it up? (I'm having trouble adding up all the +'s and -'s.)
I have a web server on my dedicated server with several web sites owned by a friend and myself. I am now wanting to setup a gameserver on the same box and will need to give someone I don't know or trust ssh access so that they can kill the gameserver and/or re-execute it as well as modify the configuration files.
I am having issues with my server and WHM. First of all, i followed the link here but i am a bit confused. When i goto add the Assign IP Address button it pops up and says no free ip addresses, i click on Add an A Entry for this Nameserver and the window pops up warning the domain file doesnt exist, it says it creates one and adds the A record.
A few notes, i did change the alternative main ethernet device to venet0:0, and the hostname to myserver.mydomain.net (as well as the actual hostname, so they match in both areas). On clicking next on the initial setup, i enabled the local nameserver. The setup completed and then the problems began.
Another massive issue i have is that i cannot create accounts, i goto create a new account and enter all the information. i hit create and the status says Account Created Sucessfully. However the account isnt listed in the account list, it is however listed in the dns zones (under edit dns).
zone "." IN { type hint; file "/var/named/named.ca"; };
zone "localdomain" IN { type master; file "/var/named/localdomain.zone"; allow-update { none; }; };
zone "localhost" IN { type master; file "/var/named/localhost.zone"; allow-update { none; }; };
zone "0.0.127.in-addr.arpa" IN { type master; file "/var/named/named.local"; allow-update { none; }; };
zone "255.in-addr.arpa" IN { type master; file "/var/named/named.broadcast"; allow-update { none; }; };
zone "0.in-addr.arpa" IN { type master; file "/var/named/named.zero"; allow-update { none; }; };
zone "ns1.mydomain.net" { type master; file "/var/named/ns1.mydomain.net.db"; };
zone "ns2.mydomain.net" { type master; file "/var/named/ns2.mydomain.net.db"; };
I am confused about the ns1.mydomain.net and ns2.mydomain.net, surely these should be under one zone file mydomain.net.db? Can anyone please enlighhten me as to why WHM is creating the two zones seperately, or infact is creating as i believe subdomains?
I would like to run custom nameservers, but it says i only have 1 free ip. Do i need to purchase more ip addresses? When i goto 'Show or Delete Current IP Addresses' both my ip addresses are shown 90.90.90.90 and 90.90.90.91, but there is no delete button, it is only a list of the IPs in green.
Are there any fixes i can do, i dont understand why it is broken. How about resetting and performing a reinstall, where is the license file for WHM/cPanel stored, maybe i could move that out of the way, reinstall cPanel then re-register the license. Can i simply reinstall over the top and reset my settings to default?
Yesteeday I have re-installed my OS and my boss did the configurations.
he had an accident and I really need help.
The accounts are restored but the dnsreport for my domain shodes the below failures.
Open DNS servers :
ERROR: One or more of your nameservers reports that it is an open DNS server. This usually means that anyone in the world can query it for domains it is not authoritative for (it is possible that the DNS server advertises that it does recursive lookups when it does not, but that shouldn't happen). This can cause an excessive load on your DNS server. Also, it is strongly discouraged to have a DNS server be both authoritative for your domain and be recursive (even if it is not open), due to the potential for cache poisoning (with no recursion, there is no cache, and it is impossible to poison it). Also, the bad guys could use your DNS server as part of an attack, by forging their IP address. Problem record(s) are:
Server XXX.XXX.XX.XXX reports that it will do recursive lookups. [test] Server XXX.XXX.XX.XXX reports that it will do recursive lookups. [test] ================
Missing (stealth) nameservers :
FAIL: You have one or more missing (stealth) nameservers. The following nameserver(s) are listed (at your nameservers) as nameservers for your domain, but are not listed at the parent nameservers (therefore, they may or may not get used, depending on whether your DNS servers return them in the authority section for other requests, per RFC2181 5.4.1). You need to make sure that these stealth nameservers are working; if they are not responding, you may have serious problems! The DNS Report will not query these servers, so you need to be very careful that they are working properly.
ns1.localdomain. ns2.localdomain.
This is listed as an ERROR because there are some cases where nasty problems can occur (if the TTLs vary from the NS records at the root servers and the NS records point to your own domain, for example).
================== Missing nameservers 2 :
ERROR: One or more of the nameservers listed at the parent servers are not listed as NS records at your nameservers. The problem NS records are: ns1.mydomain.com. ns2.mydomain.com
just restored a server from an rsync backup. problem now is that i have a couple of hundred accounts all under root, when they're supposed to be resellers and sub accounts of resellers.
any idea if its just some file which contains all the mappings or do i need to go through all these hundreds of accounts and reassign them?
What is the fastest way to move all accounts from old servers to new servers with minimum downtime for customers' websites? Both servers are using WHM/Cpanel and i need to keep reseller priviledges and packages also,which system files should i copy to new server?
i have a dedicated server. Centos 5.3 /Cpanel 2 reseller accounts on it: acc1 and acc2. acc1 has ns1.domain.tld and ns2.domain.tl nameservers set up acc2 has ns3.domain.tld and ns4.domain.tl nameservers set up
now i want to move an account (customer.tld) from acc2 to acc1 without downtime. how can i do this provided i can not have customer.tld both on acc1 and acc2 on the same server?
here's what i did:
1. changed customer.tld nameservers to have ns1.domain.tld, ns2.domain.tld, ns3.domain.tld, ns4.domain.tld then waited for 48 hours for the changes to propagate
2. changed the customer.tld owner in WHM from acc2 to acc1
3. changed the cpanel package from acc2_package ti acc1_package
4. changed the IP in WHM for the account from ns3 IP to ns1 IP
5. changed the DNS entries in WHM ns3 changed to ns1 on all instances found there
but i still have a downtime period now. everything looks fine in httpd.conf thou
Webhostgiant.com, Asmallorange.com and Dayanahost.com are the companies which can be used for reselling, their plans are resourceful and support is their priority. Pricing is affordable.
A friend of mine is trying to find a place that will let him resell other reseller accounts. The accounts would need WHM access. I can't find anything for him, and he won't host with me because I don't offer that.
I know I have seen a command line you can use which will activate :fail: in all the accounts on the server simultaneously so that you don't have to do each account separately, but I can't find that command.
Does anyone here know what that command is? I'm assuming it would involve /etc/valiases/?
Is there a way to keep an account suspended in WHM and ensure that they don't get processed in my daily/weekly/monthly backups without manually selecting the account in WHM?
