How To Determine Load On Two VPS's And See If They Can Be Merged
Jan 24, 2008
I have two VPS's.
Main VPS is 1152mb SLM ram running only a relatively small vBulletin community. My goal is to keep this as fast as possible, which is why I overbought on the VPS and recently moved my couple other low volume sites (and some higher volume image hosting) + some email acccounts on to a 512mb SLM VPS.
Both VPS's are Cpanel/WHM running centros 4 (might be 4.5, I'm confused on this) and the latest release version of whm.
What I am wondering is what stats/tracking I might be able to run to see what typical usage is on the two VPS's for a day or two and try and figure out if I jumped the gun in splitting them, and can safely remerge them without effecting the vBulletin performance.
Can someone help me out with how to setup and read some stats that would tell me if both VPS's are underutilized enough to merge them back together onto the 1152mb VPS?
I created all the accounts I need, I uploaded all the files these accounts need but I'm still getting a problem with the DNS redirection... when I asked to my server provider they told me this:
According to the information provided, you have not yet completed setup of your forward DNS. We do not provide server DNS administration services with the exception of updating your reverse PTR records since we do not allow delegation of our client's reverse DNS. You will need to contact your system's administrator in order to have the issues regarding server setup addressed.
And when I'm scanning one of the domains pointing to this DNS the report says this:
"WARNING. The parent servers (I checked with a0.org.afilias-nst.info.) are not providing glue for all your nameservers. This means that they are supplying the NS records (host.example.com), but not supplying the A records (192.0.2.53), which can cause slightly slower connections, and may cause incompatibilities with some non-RFC-compliant programs. This is perfectly acceptable behavior per the RFCs. This will usually occur if your DNS servers are not in the same TLD as your domain (for example, a DNS server of "ns1.example.org" for the domain "example.com"). In this case, you can speed up the connections slightly by having NS records that are in the same TLD as your domain."
"ERROR. One or more of your DNS servers are missing A records (per NS records that may be cached). As a result, they cannot be used. The problem hostnames are:
ns2.mbhostve.com. has no A record. ns1.mbhostve.com. has no A record."
"A timeout occurred getting the NS records from your nameservers! None of your nameservers responded fast enough. They are probably down or unreachable. I can't continue since your nameservers aren't responding. If you have a Watchguard Firebox, it's due to a bug in their DNS Proxy, which must be disabled (31 Jul 2006 UPDATE: several years after being informed of this, there is a rumor that there is a fix that allows the Watchguard DNS proxy to work)."
------------
I'm using CPANEL but I don't know how to fix the problem here,
I am with powervps for more than 2 years, but in the last month all the good service and the uptime from the past has disappeared.
I have 3 VPS accounts, all in diferents servers, and in this last month all three accounts were having lot of problemas, specially one of them, that was more than 15 hours down, and now is down again, and it looks like they take a while to be up again...
I ask to the support about this problems, but i donīt get any convincing answer. I think that they have a big problem with the stability of his systems, and i donīt know why.
I arrive to this forum looking for the experiences of other costumers of powervps this days to see if I am the person with worse luck of the world or if it is a global problem of powervps.
I currently have 2 VPSs that I'm monitoring and I noticed that on one of them the memory usage is much higher than the other which doesn't make sense to me. I tracked the high memory usage to the Apache processes.
Here's the overview of the VPSs:
LiquidWeb VPS- 512MB RAM, 10 Sites with minimal usage. Average httpd process (Owner Priority Cpu% Mem% Command): nobody 0 0.0 1.2 /usr/local/apache/bin/httpd -k start -DSSL
Virpus VPS- 384MB RAM, 61 sites with moderate usage. Average httpd process (Owner Priority Cpu% Mem% Command): nobody 0 0.0 0.3 /usr/local/apache/bin/httpd -k start -DSSL
Both Apache configurations are identical, the only difference besides the hardware is that LiquidWeb runs CentOS4.7 and Virpus runs CentOS5.2, any ideas? It's not to big of a deal since I'm not near my limit for either of them but I was just curious.
what's going inside my provider Powervps/Defender hosting, they are offering now 25% OFF of new customers + triply bandwidth.
Curent customers are not allowod to get this offer, until they order a new VPS and cancel the older.
I'm asking, because i feel, it's samething, why they don't go upgarading the account throughly with keeping IPs and data..? why do old customers need to cancel the old VPS then they go get a new VPS..?
are Old VPSs powerfully then the newest..? any informations...?
In order to increase the reliability of a audio streaming service I am thinking to take the action I describe below.
1. Buy two Windows VPSs with WMS installed.
2. Register a domain name (i.e audiostream.com) with 4 nameservers: ns1.ip1_vps1, ns2.ip2_vps1, ns3.ip1_vps2, ns4.ip2_vps2.
3. Create all publishing points (streams) on both servers.
Normaly VPS1 should serve all clients. In case VPS1 goes down, VPS2 should jump in and serve all clients-connections. As soon as VPS1 becomes available (ns1 & ns2 start responding again), VPS1 starts serving all new connections.
Load balancing or any other kind of advanced load, traffic, etc management is not important.
Then we have the following cases: 1. VPS1 is down , which means that VPS2 should take charge.
2. VPS1 is up (ns, http, ftp services), but WMS1 is down (crashed). Means that the playlist (asx) file should be built so that it also includes the IP, port & publishing points of VPS2. This should be done because ns1 & ns2 will answer without any problem, but WMS1 will be crashed and won't serve any media connections, thus ASX will look for the next available stream in the playlist.
Do you think that the above is possible. Is this gonna work?
I finally got my site moved over to Cartika's server. They were a big help with several issues I had, even fixing things that didn't have anything to do with their server.
I had to get a new template since the other one was only available at .wordpress but I like the new one much better anyway. I still have to go through each page to make sure I didn't forget to change some link or something. I also had to edit the php to work how I have it so I may have missed something (I haven't even seen php since 2003).
I'm writing a post about my initial impressions of Cartika and why I eventually chose them. I'll post the info at WHT when I finish it.
we have come to a point where we would like to operate our own data center and move on from doing collocation.
Could anyone that have any experience in setting up their own data center help me out in terms of what kind of equipment needed?
From my qucik research, I would be needing the following: 1. Air Conditioning System - I am thinking of using Liebert System 3 2. UPS System, still not sure what type that suits our needs 3. Diesel Generators, still not sue what type that suits our needs
The server room would be roughly 1,200 square feet. How many Liebert System 3 would I need, how many tons, chilled water or compressors? We have roughly 200 servers at the moment, but would like to accomodate the room to up to 1,000 servers.
What kind of UPS system would you recommend us using?
What kind of Diesel Generators would you recommend us using?
How much is the total cost - roughly to fund this setup?
Are there other main points that I missed besides, AC, UPS, and Diesel Generatros? I mean aside security, network equipments itself, etc. The main basic things.
Last month I order 2 Xen VPSs from Xenvz.co.uk and use them for VPN proxy.
But a few days ago, xenvz stopped one vps and state "This is because it is spreading the Conficker virus.". I'm a little surprise because there's only 10+ users on this vps. Most of them use VPN for visting Youtube or P2P download or gaming. And Conficker virus can only run on Windows, but all my vps is running on Debian.
Maybe someone had download something that contain Conficker virus?
Anyway, I had to move a few users to another vps yesterday.
But xenvz stop my another vps today for the same reason!
I really do not know whether or not one of my user is spreading or other reason, but as I know, Conficker virus had affected thousands of hosts in the past. If someone download or being affect by conficker for any reason, provider then stop their host, I'm afraid thousands of sites would down.
I did a quick search on this and could not see it as already being posted
It seems quite a clever but simple idea - remove a lot of the oxygen from the air to help reduce the risk of fire. What do those of you operating your own facilities make of this? Is anyone already doing this? [url]
I'm have a VDS with hosting-ie, and it is extremely slow.. I run almost nothing on it..
I'm not running a website, no MYSQL, no Databases.. just newsleecher, a bittorent client for seeding ubunto and occassionally i'll open ftp program to transfer files from home to server.
Lately, i can't even just have newsleecher open by itself and have it running, as it pauses waiting for threads to catch up. If I close everything, i sometimes have to still wait from 30-45 seconds just to open the My Computer Icon. To me thats not acceptable. 26 processes running, with none larger than 10K, memory commit will go up to 90M of 1024M.. let its too slow to run anything.
Their support tell me, that even though its dedicated resources, i'm on a box with 4 other hosts., so hence it being slow. Their suggestion is I upgrade to another box.. I find it hard to believe that i should have to upgrade so I can run a few non-memory intensive programs.
What can i do to prove to them that there is a problem? I'm locked into a 3 month commitment. What use is a VDS server that run 1 application? Is there specific counters i can enable that would get to the heart of the matter?
It is Win2003 running on it. 60 G HD , 1.5 Ghz CPU, 1G Ram. I read some of the other threads, but they seem to be more for someone that has access outside of their VDS.. (unless i missed one)
edit: I suggested to them maybe someone is hammering the HD, but they say there is no hard disk, that its only allocated space..(?)
I have always found this odd and do not understand enough to figure it out.
Any knowledgeable people would be cool.
My datacenter has given me 2amp circuit for my computer. It seems to run fine on it.
Looking at the back of my power supply it says the following
520Watt max
Input rating 100-240v~,50-60Hz 7A-3A
Output rating +3.3V & +5V combined 150W max 12V combined current 39A max (and a lot of other stuff on amps and volts for output).
Now, Watts = Volts * Amps. So if I have 520watts and 12 volts would be 43 amps If it means 520 watts and 3.3volts it would be 157 amps However it seems to max at 39amps on the back for output.
I imagine input is all that matters here and at 520 watts and 100 to 240volts that would be 5.2 amps to 2.16 amps
And the thing says 7amps to 3 amps on the back for input.
So....I imagine that is the max it can pull before dying.
However, I have 4 drives, 4 ram sticks, and 2 quad core cpus all going and I would figure I am at least halfway or more of the power use.
I'm trying to set up a site on IIS 5. I think I've done the setup on IIS ok, but when I try the site, it's not getting served. I think there might be a firewall in the way, blocking port 80. Any idea how I would test to see if this is the case?
Assuming a linux server / apache / php / mysql setup
I'm wondering 1) how you can find out which php script is causing problems, i assume infinite looping, crashing a server and 2) are there any measures you can take (maybe in the php or apache configuration) that can prevent such a thing from happening in the first place, other than writing good code obviously?
Is there anyway to determine how many visitors subscribe to an RSS feed? (besides using something like technorati or feedburner) Does anyone know of a log analyzer will do this or another custom solution?
I'm using MRTG to display graphs of traffic to my server, and today noticed a period of several hours where there was a lot of *incoming* data over the network, which is unusual. There's a good chance it's some harmless script or service that I've forgotten about, but really I need more information on what services/ports are creating what traffic, which brings me to my question.
I'm wondering whether there's an easy way to check what services (or ports) are creating traffic, and what volumes of traffic. It would be nice if it was possible to graph or breakdown the traffic by service somehow, and determine which are the biggest users of bandwidth and when. This is a dedicated CentOS server that I can install basically anything on, but that doesn't use a control panel, so I'd like to see what great ideas you folks can come up with, or whether there's any nice software you can suggest. I'm only using the server for hobbyist stuff at the moment, so free software, or ideas using built in commands are preferable.
a log file analysis program that can tell me the exact time an ip address accesses my server and how many times that particular ip address hits the server.
Does anybody know of a package that supports this, or is it even possible?
