How do you know if a host is a reseller?
I am looking for a web host. I'd like to stay away from resellers, but I'm not sure how to tell if a company is a reseller or the 'original'. How do you find out?

How can one tell the "hosting company" that advertise hosting is a reseller or owns the data center?
I bet 99% are resellers but how can one find out ? is there a web tool?
I bought a reseller account because i had a dozen or so sites and could save money etc taking charge of them. I bought a reseller account. After a while with my hosting company I am unhappy with the uptime so I have set up another reseller account with hostgator.
I now need to move all my sites over.
I understand what I need to do is;
(these are simple, non database, non wordpress sites btw)
Make a backup of site
Put backup of site on new reseller account
repoint dns for site on old reseller account to new reseller account
job done!
I have backed up my site and now want to upload it to my new location. I have setup the domain account in my reseller control panel.
My problem is how/where do i upload these files to? I think I need a direct IP address as if i ftp to ftp.sitename.com that onviously sends me to the reseller account i am trying to leave.
I know my reseller ip address, but how does that relate to the sites i am going to host...?
I've been thinking about becoming a reseller for Host Gator. Does anyone have any experience with their reseller program?
Can anyone provide me with any tips about reselling? Is there anything I should know about? Is it difficult to do? Is it time consuming?
I noticed a trend - I don't know if it's very new, but it can't be very old either - that quite a few people are looking for hosting and specifically ask that the host is not a reseller. Obviously they have somehow decided that a reseller is not a good choice for them.
A host that rents servers from a datacenter and then sells shared hosting and/or reseller hosting accounts or whatever other types of packages, is in fact reselling what it has bought from its provider. Despite that, it is generally regarded as a full-fledged host. Sure, they do take care that the servers are managed properly, that they are secure, they provide customer support, so they add to the original product that they have bought, but in essence they are resellers.
The first one is that the reliability, the uptime and server performance depend almost entirely on the upstream provider (the host behind the reseller). Considering that the reseller did a good job in finding a great upstream host, these things should be fine, but, unfortunately, in their search to get the best deal out there, many hosting resellers (if not most of them) end up being hosted for just a few bucks a month on highly overcrowded servers with stability and performance problems, frequent downtime etc. which will in turn translate into poor service for the end user.
The other major concern is the knowledgeability of the reseller. The very ease of becoming a reseller and the fact that almost anyone, or, as a WebHostingTalk user said it once, "anybody and his dog", can be a reseller, makes it very hard for some to trust a hosting reseller.
I would never say a reseller is a bad choice, but some things are not to be expected from a reseller. For example most resellers are a one man show and thus 24/7 365 days a year support can not be achieved without outsourcing some of it. This however is not a very cost effective solution for low volumes and this is why most resellers provide all the support themselves, which will obviously not be 24/7.
Also a reseller has only so much freedom on the server. A reseller cannot do some things and has to ask his own host to do them for him. That means it will take longer for those things to get solved.
On the plus side, a reseller often gets to know his customers and their needs and the client-reseller relationship often gets quite close. A friendly tone is worth for some people more than a 99.99% uptime statistic. If you're one of those people a reseller could very well be the right choice.

I'm interested in maybe moving all my reseller hosting and domain registration from United Hosting and Low Cost Names respectively... So I'm interested in hearing what you are using and why... I'm a freelancer who resells space, I live in the UK and am wanting the best companies to work it for me and my clients...
A few reasons why I want to change right now is that United Hosting just doesn't offer enough space for me, and I'm finding it more and more expensive for the value I'm getting. Though they are good as they allow me to edit php.ini files, have ImageMagick, and offer webmail to my clients etc. I do like Low Cost Names, but again I'm finding the lack of CNAME records a little disappointing.
So... what are your best reseller host and domain registrator to you and why?

View 7 Replies View RelatedWe currently use a hosting company in the UK to host about 13 of our clients websites. The domains have been registered with many different companies to complicate things even more!
We do not host their email. The clients look after their email themselves but obviously use the same domain as the website in their email addresses.
We would now like to move these websites to a new hosting company which I have already set up. I've uploaded all the files and databases so all that's in place and seems to be working well.
Now the complicated part (for me anyway)!
I'm not sure what I need to do in order to change where the site is hosted from and NOT change anything about the clients email settings. I believe I do not need to change the DNS settings as this may disrupt the email settings which I don't want. Do I need to change only the IP address to the new server?
My new hosting plan is on a Virtual dedicated server if that's important.
We have about 3 resellers on one server and all of a sudden, when I log in to whm and click "Show Reseller Accounts", all accounts show under root.. What's even strager, is that under package colum, it says "undefined"
However, when I click "list accounts", all accounts show and they are properly setup up with the correct package and owner (not all root.. They also show to which reseller they belong).
how to fix the problem when I click "Show Reseller Accounts"?
I'm configuring a website for a client who has moved their web hosting to downtownhost, but is keeping their email hosting with their current provider. They do not want to configure an MX entry on DTH to autoforward email back to their current provider because they don't want their email to pass through DTH.
In order to do this, do I keep the nameserver entries on the current provider the same, and configure an http redirect to point to DTH? Or is there something else I should configure on the current provider?

I was with Blue Host and their support and service was pretty bad. Servers going down all the time, and chat support was terrible. Then I moved to Host Monster and received the same kind of service/support. I later then figured out that Blue Host and Host Monster is runned by the same people. For example, I opened up a tech support ticket with Host Monster and then they replied signing their signature with Blue Host. So I got the same service: terrible tech support and servers kept going down. Now I'm looking for a new web hosting. I a few people here gave Host Gator some good reviews. I hope Host Gator is not run be the same people that runs Blue Host and Host Monster.

with this being my first website goddady's website tonight or there blog site plan seem pretty good as I do not know how to build a professional looking website nor do I have a knowledge of HTML. Are there other hosts that offer better services such as these?
Also I would want to register with 1&1 as to register privately is free but with godaddy it costs around $15 and I've heard of godaddy stealing persons domains when they haven't even expired yet i.e. familyAlbum.com?

I'm not sure if I posting in the right section, but I have two questions.
1. I'm actually not sure if I should purchase a reseller account. I don't know if it's what I need. I would like to able to provide *free hosting* for fan-sites, blogs, fanlistings, etc. I am not interested in making money off of hosting. This is something I've wanted to for awhile. Are there any suggestions for this?
2. Once thing that popped into my head is that I would like give my hostees more than FTP access. Can I give them their own cPanel access with their FTP account? I've been hosted on starszz.com before as sub-domain (or ftp account), and had cPanel access. I didn't have a domain either. I've browsed hosting sites, and I just don't recall seeing information about giving ftp accounts cPanel access.
I am wondering how do you set up vps with virtuozzo to have resellers? Like is there a free panel out there for that?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am currently on the Bronze Shared plan at Downtownhost. I love 'em, and have referred people to them before. I currently help out have a few clients that I help out with some Wordpress blogs (the technical side of things), and I have recently been asked a couple of times if I know of a good host. Of course, I send them to DTH, but I recently asked myself if maybe it was time to go reseller with them and sell space to these clients? Or should I just sell them some space out of my own shared plan? Mind you, they are not technical at all, so they won't be logging into any Cpanel control panels or anything. At what point does it make sense to go reseller? My question is regards to all aspects: financial (for me!), technical, support, etc.

In the past few days i've seen tones of reviews and offers and re re reviews, i can say by know that it's a dirty game going on played by some managers, lol...the idea is that i can't trust what they say nor the reviews that i have seen cause in one place it's all milk and honey and in another place it's sucky to say the least.
So my buget to start with would be from 10$ to 20$/month. I prefer a host that owns it's stuff and it's the first hand and not a re re re seller.

I see that reseller and VPS are kind of the same price so what would be better. I have limited knowledge of unix (i used to work some years ago but my skills were crapy and surley i forgot everything) but i can update/upgrade them to some point...hope it won't be required, don't have so much time nor the brains

As far as shared hosting, and reseller hosting the main aspects are simply space and bandwidth. Then of course the company ethics and support reliablility and whatnot. From a server aspect, it's just space and bandwidth provided.
I'm assuming a VPS adds a few new dimensions including RAM.
Is there any way to find out if the hosting company I am dealing with is a reseller?

But couldn't access it.As it seems I didnt make it a reseller account!
So,I looked like an hours and cant find a function to make it into one without deleting it first! Is there any other way?
We have set up a VPS reseller option that gives the customer a set amount of ram/disk space/bandwidth transfer rate etc. and allows them through HyperVM to set up their own VPS's and sell them on, they are even able to spread them over multiple servers, albeit we only have 2 VPS servers at present.
Its a pretty nice offer and seems pretty decent but i cant help but wonder why other hosts are not doing this? I only looked into it because a sales associate had mentioned it was possible.
Is there a potential for abuse that im not seeing?
The plans i was thinking of offering was roughly:
1GB ram
30-40 GB disk space
Fair share bandwidth
for about $100
The servers we have are 8GB quad core Xeon E7300.

After having shared hosting for years I am thinking of moving on to something a little more reliable/advanced. I need it to be basic and cheap at first but with room to grow.
So, my questions:
1. Am I likely to see a significant speed/reliability benefit with VPS over reseller space?
2. Am I likely to encounter any big headaches with a VPS as a total beginner?
3. Are there any big advantages to a VPS besides moving out of a shared environment?
4. Is it realistic to run a VPS when I know nothing about Linux admin (yet)?
5. How is Plesk vs Cpanel?
Right now, my needs are basic. I could probably go with a cheap VPS but my lack of knowledge would mean I would need some kind of management on top. I'm tempted to get a reseller account but I wouldn't want outgrow it and move again anytime soon.
