Hosting On Private Server
Apr 7, 2008
Got a person potentially developing an ecommerce website for me. Part of the agreed price is 1 yrs free hosting on their server. However what are the pitfulls since i am concerned with security (customer credit info), and if anything untoward happens like the site going down.
If a proper webhosting business is required, essentially i need these:
"Linux server with PHP, MySQL, an SSL certificate, register_globals turned on, a c-panel to admin the MySQL"
Which provides a great qualty and cheap service (not godaddy) - if it helps I am bested in the UK.

Hi, is anyone know the advantage of VPS hosting vs shared hosting? I found a cheap VPS plan at in2net.com. I can get 15G space, 200G bandwidth and 256 RAM for $9.95 a month. My site starts getting a lot of users, it might be an issue with shared hosting. My site also hosts a forum, and currently has 1000 unique visitors and 8000 pageviews daily. Sometime the forum has 30-50 concurrent members.
So, I'm just wondering in my case, wihch one would you choose, VPS or shared hosting? since they are the same price. I don't know how to manage servers, but my friend has a unmanaged server at theplanet, and he hasn't managed the server at all since he had it. So, if a VPS host comes with all the scripts installed, in this case, it doesn't require any management, am I right?
oh, one more quesiton, is the plesk control panel works like whm panel? where each client has his own control panel?

I have a reseller shared hosting plan that allows for 50 sub-accounts and I'm using about 20. I am looking at getting a VPS with between 256 - 394 mb RAM and am wondering if I were to move all of my accounts to the new VPS would I be ending up with less RAM to use for all of my sites.
To put this another way how do most reseller plans manage RAM usage? Do each of my sub-accounts have access to say 64 mb RAM so that if I were to use all 50 sub accounts I would have access to 50*64 mb.
From what I've experienced and read with shared hosting my thought is I could end up with less access to server resources, CPU and RAM, with a VPS plan - though with VPS the resources are more guaranteed rather than being dependent on the usage of other accounts on the server.
The reason I am looking at a VPS account is that I have a site that will likely have 1000s of users with a server intensive script (Moodle) and I know it would violate the reseller account agreement. So maybe my plan should be to keep the reseller account and use it for my database driven sites and use the VPS for the server intensive site and my html based sites.
Also, my VPS choice seems to be narrowed down to Liquidweb, JaguarPC and Zone - has anybody heard of any negative experiences with Liquidweb? I can't find any.

I'm wondering wether it would work to host a 40 players source server on the following VPS I am about to get
dual quad xeon
30Mbps
300gb monthly transfer
1024mb ram
OS:
CentOS
Fedora Core
Ubuntu
Gentoo
Slackware
Debian
I guess the 30mbps speed is fine but will the 300gb be enough and what about the RAM?
Which OS would be the best for game hosting and for someone that's new to linux?

Recently I've had a very large private server hosted on ecatel's services with a buddy of mine the reason we decided to go with them is because they're very friendly with abuse reports and false ones as well.
Considering we have some major competition we always get false ass abuse reports and need any alternative weather it be actually in the US or offshore doesn't matter but we're looking for a relatively fast network that can stand a lot of connections.
We're also looking for some at least reasonable prices...
With the ability to link the two servers we require together internally to improve latency between the two as one is our MSSQL system the other provides access to the actual worlds for the game.

have a number of vps servers with USA based VPS hosts, very happy with these companies but as they are USA based load time could be improved with AU based server. Also search engine considerations as well fictate we need to offer AU based hsoting. So now looking to setup future accounts a little closer to home with australian based vps hosting
Does anyone know of a really good, fast, reliable affordable vps host offering cpanel/whm vps hosting in a top notch australian data centre.
hoping to pay arounf $100 per month, with room to grow when we have more clients on the server...
This is the average package we are on with us based hosts so looking for something as close as possible to this...
$89 Monthly
$0 Setup
2 GB Burst RAM
512 MB Guaranteed RAM
20 GB Storage
500 GB Monthly Transfer
4 IP Addresses
Unlimited Domains
Unlimited User Accounts
Cpanel/WHM
Minimum Server Specs
Dual Xeon 3 GHz or Better
8 GB Registered ECC RAM
U320 SCSI HD in Hardware RAID 10
Zero Downtime During Drive Failure
Hot-Swap Drives and Fans
Replaceable on the Fly
Dual Gigabit Network Interfaces
If anyone can point me in the direction of some reputable companies id be very happy!
Yes i have searched the forum but cant really find mention of good australian based vps hosts.

I am looking for somewhere in the US or Canada that can host a VPS with the following requirements:
10gb space
256mb ram - burst 512mb
200gb bandwidth
2 ips (or 1 with cheap price for an extra ip)
Public IRC Capable (not linking with EFNet, etc.)
I've been searching for something that can meet my needs but I've been at a loss. BuyAVPS became a big issue, and I pulled out quickly before the most recent downtime, SolarVPS before that with their lovely billing problems and collection threats.

We are looking of going with a VPS hosting for a secure dealer site. We won't need massive amounts of space, but bandwidth is more a concern, as we may need to serve video files for demos and such.
These are the 4 companies we are considering going with:
EV1Servers
ServerPowered
SteadFastNnetworks
PowerVPS
Has anybody here used any of these hosts? What have been your experiences with them?

I'm about to launch a viral project that has realy good potential to strike it big, but would like to clear a few things first.
I would not like to have it associated with my name - not that it anything illegal, but in real life I'm doing something completely different and on the record would like to keep it that way.
So that probably means keeping the whois private - but I have another question as well. Suppose the project strikes it big - would a diggin journalist be able to still get my name/data from a hosting company too?
Is there a good hosting company with an all-inclusive service that you could recommend (that would get me a private hosting plan + a private domain name/whois)? And that would be reasonably priced of course + more importanty reliable (note have problems if/when there is a massive traffic surge to my site at one point in time)
Would probably take a shared hosting plan - need only PHP and imagemagick to start with. But again - bit part of my concern is what happens if the project makes it big and there is a lot of traffic - so ideally "unlimited" bandwidth and responsive admins...

I am currently with the planet and am happy with them, however as part of a new venture I need to gather a list of hosts as well as the planet that will be able to cater to the ventures needs and go to tender with the requirements.
ThePlanet offer something called a virtual rack. This is cheaper than renting a dedicated rack, allows for Gb networking but doesnt not allow for a SAN. Do other providers offer something similar? The cost of putting a machine on the virtual rack is not that much more expensive than just renting the machine. I guess there isn't too much to these set-ups to be fair.
If not, then we are looking for dedicated racks, with the ability to host a SAN at some point, but starting off with say 3 servers (2 web servers, 1 storage server with raid5 6Tb of hdd). These servers will be dealing with network cameras although I don't think that many will be streaming at once but the network capacity does need to be there.
Who's door should I be knocking on to find out some prices?
One final thing, should I bother looking for co-lo providers as well? We are in the Uk but not precious about our host being in the same country at all (it would be nice but uk prices are ££). Really, all we would be able to do with co-lo is buy the hardware outright to save price as we are not interested in looking after the hardware.

All my servers are on Linux machines.

how you are doing this if you are co-locating a few servers in the same rack. I'm looking at putting in a small server to handle the backups offloaded to it, and connecting the 2nd 1Gbit ethernet ports on our Poweredges to a private switch. Does this sound about right and how you would handle them?
We already do offsite RSYNC, what I am trying to work out is how to handle backups held onsite from multiple servers. The servers will have a local copy of a backup, and i'm thinking one offloaded to a specified backup server. That backup server can then RSYNC offsite.
Right now we have two 1RU servers, with two more going in and a 2RU server. So ideally I would like to backup all 5 servers to this box.
Perhaps i'm over complicating it? However I do want to have a good backup system in place, I sleep easier at night this way

I'm trying to find a hosting company or private linux server that will host an installation of Nagios which is a monitoring utility. It does require some linux system packages to be installed as well as a break in the firewall for the monitoring.
Does anyone know of cheap linux private server (less than $25/month), or is anyone else running this with someone? It really requires no memory or hard drive space and I'm sure could run in a less than amazing CPU environment. It generates pretty constant web traffic but very low bandwidth.

I am "simply" looking to run a Joomla! community site with an estimated 250 - 500 and then eventually up to 1,000 users onine at one time. The main attraction will be the user forums and profiles. I don't plan on having any videos or anything like that, but I will install a mambot that will integrate Google Video, etc.
I am trying to pick a VPS provider and from what I have read so far, I have kind of narrowed it down to a few places:
Spry.com
vpslink.com
knownhost.com
mediatemple.net
From reading alot so far, I would imagine I would need at least 256-512MB of RAM. Plesk sounds like a good control panel since I won't be reselling any of the space. Webmin sounds too hands on, and I know a little bit, but not a lot. The backup option that comes with Spry.com sounds tempting, but VPSLink has attractive price points. Mediatemple.net also gives you 1TB of bandwidth, a very attractive option.
I am "simply" looking to run a Joomla! community site with an estimated 250 -
As long as the site can run MySQL, I am happy. Joomla!, statistics software (any suggestions) and WordPress and that is about it as far as applications.
Any suggestions on what plans or who I should go with? My budget is about $t50 a month.

The subject line pretty much sums up my major problem. My site has been intermittently slow (somtimes slow, sometimes not) for... like since I can remember. So my site isn't that big
Sometimes for me it takes forever to load a vbulletin page, or even the main page of the site. I thought I had found the problem (a mysql-intensive script), removed it, improved things quite a bit, but there is still a long way to go!
Many site users report the same exact things.
"The site is sloowww" ...
"It wasn't slow yesterday but it is today" ...
"Today it's really fast, but last week I was having problems pulling up pages".
Its fustrating becase this is a VPS, and although I know how to use Cpanel, WHM is really big and I am not sure what I could do to speed up my website or to even begin to locate any potential problems.
My site is basically Joomla CMS, vBulletin BBS and 4images image gallery. The later two use a common user database. My current mysql usage is 327.55MB in total. Apache 1.3.34, PHP 4.4.1 and MySQL 4.1.19-standard. Powered by WHM/Cpanel & Virtuozzo.
What should I do? Where can I start? Where can I look?

I'm just wondering if people could point me in the direction of cheap VPS's - like under $10/month, but ideally nearer $5/month if such a thing exists..
I'm looking for one to host slave DNS so I obviously want it to be fast and reliable but I dont need it to be 100% mega reliable in the sense that an outage here and there wouldn't be the end of the world as there will be no web sites hosted on it.
What is the cheapest VPS out there?
