Hostgator, Web.com, 1&1, WestHost, DreamHost, And Yahoo Web Hosting?
Apr 12, 2008
I am trying to pick a hoster, but I would like some help please. The site I am making is going to be a personal site, with a photo gallery, which will start out with about 500-1000 photos and will grow anywhere from 10-a few hundred a month. I also plan on having a small blog.
The hosters I am currently looking at are:
Hostgator, Web.com, 1&1, WestHost, DreamHost, and Yahoo Web Hosting. Which provider out of these do you think would be the best? Also are there any other providers you recommend.

I'm thinking of finding a webhost in US. I knew these hosting company - Bluehost, Dreamhost, Hostgator are the famous one. They are offering quite similar package as well.
No sure which to choose.
Usage: just normal wordpress blog with a lot of photos. Might want to have my own photo gallery in the hosting server as well. Must have Fantastico Deluxe and must be in cpanel. lol.. I'm used to cpanel.

I have use 2 years in dreamhost and feel good until This month!
Some of my websites becoming slow when visit. some are not!
I write to them and they said they can move my 1 website to another apache, they think maybe problems on apache. BUT after they moved sucessfull, my website is not reachable! and said: bad http-conff etc.
These days are very bad experience with them, today i found they start their unlimited ALL hositng package, i am not sure if this is related with my website was slow.
Acturally, I do not need so big and traffic hosting on DH, i rather to choose a good performance and speed hosting, NOT a oversell hosting company!
I must say: i feel it is ok in past years, but recent i am not happy with their hosting service.
My question: Is there a better hosting company than dreamhost? i need 10g spaces,200-400gb month traffic, can host 3-5 domains.
month charge under 9usd should be more better!

I have some accounts with WestHost that I started probably around 2002 or so. I remember for a while when WestHost was upgrading their software there were some major issues, and some dissatisfied customers who left. I didn't because these accounts were not all that critical. As best as I can tell, everything has been pretty stable the last couple of years.

I'm thinking about trying WestHost's VPS service. I've done a search on them here, but there really isn't much about them in the forum, especially recently.
I know it's not "true" VPS, but really how different is it than the "true" stuff? What would I really be losing out on? Do I really need full "root access"? I'm planning to run one or two SN-type sites using a PHP script, but may not have that many users initially. As you can see, their pricing is quite good - the best I've seen for anything claiming to be "VPS" in any sense. The only other lower than normal pricing I've seen is at JTL.net and JaguarPC, but the $5 CPanel fee at JTL puts them closer to "normal," and I've found things about JaguarPC that make me leery of trying them.
So, what about WestHost?

I feel like i made the mistake of signing up for a VPS host way too quickly and without good judgement.
I took the plunge and signed up for westhosts Summertime special deal which gave me this: $16.95 (x12 months) -free domain name - 25gig, 500gig transfer, pls all the goodies you can expect from a good plan but not. westhost.com/package-compare.html
They use a special control panel custom made as you may know called Site Manager. Its sorta limited really to install software they tailored for you.
The "root like access" is pure crap. but then again what would you expect? you can even run the top command.
It would have been better to go with shared with shell access!
I wont go deep into the issue; you can find my post on their forums:: forums.westhost.com/showthread.php?p=36727
What i want to know about today is this:
I found a company called TekTonic.net and they seem to have some good prices.
What i am confused about however is their UM1 (unmetered) vs their Linux-1 (Unmanaged) plans.
for example; in the Unmetered UM1 plan it says: 1.0 Mbit Unmetered (equiv. 320GB)
while for Unmanaged Linux-1 it says: Transfer Fully Burstable to 100Mbit
My question here is: for UM1. Is it really unmeterd and if so why does it say equiv to 320gb? .. then what does the "Transfer Fully Burstable to 100Mbit" mean?
also, what OS choice should i go with if i pick these guys? CentOS or Debian, Ubuntu? I know Ubuntu IS debian with crandy on top.
My budget isnt really high. I am trying not to go beyond $25 to a max of $28 per month).. and yes i do have my own domain!

Has anyone ever used Yahoo to host their website? I have heard some good and more bad comments about them. I am a rookie at this so my site is going to be pretty basic. How do they rank vs. other hosting companies?
Yahoo has an “easy site creator” tool to make a site with a template like process. Do sites that use these rank as well in search engines as sites built without a template?

It seems that Yahoo does web hosting, and they offer WordPress as one of their one-click install kinds of things. Given the absolutely absurd responsiveness of yahoo.com, I was curious if anyone actually used them as a webhost?
Their pricing is decent, but I'm wondering about performance? I'm currently with Dreamhost, and I'm okay with them, except that WP performance isn't great (not awful, though, either), despite having wp-cache installed and operational.
So how good it Yahoo's small business webhosting? Their TOS seems pretty generous as well.

I bought a hosting package from Yahoo Small Business India.
Initially i was happy because the package was cheap and had good features. Database was easily set up I installed php admin tool also with one click install. No other packages are available. One has to manually upload and install.
I tried to upload phpbb but i wasn't able to upload some files. I emailed them and asked why the server gives an error while uploading .htaccess files, the reply was we don't support it. I uploaded it without .htaccess and installed it. I installed wordpess and wanted to have clean URLs but yahoo does not support mod rewrite. I don’t know much about php and databases.
9th July 2008: While I was learning I modified some tables due to which my database administrator permissions were lost. I was able to login using phpadmin but unable to create new databases and modify previously created databases and tables. I emailed customer care regarding the problem and got a useless reply on 10th July that I should change the password of the database administrator.
I changed the password but the problem was not resolved. On 11th I again emailed the problem in detail with screenshots to the customer care. On 12th, I got a reply “we have forwarded this issue to the technical team and we will inform you once this issue is resolved.”
On 12th I emailed to ask when the problem will be resolved but got no reply from them. Till date (15th July) the problem is not resolved. No one even wants to reply to emails.
See below my emails and replies given by yahoo customer care:

My email to yahoo customer care on 9th July:
I have some problem with database. By mistake i modified my original user name which i created while setting up the database. Now i can't access the tables that were created with previous user name. When i log in using phpadmin and try to see any tables i get the message. Access denied. Moreover, I also cannot create any new tables. I have NOT modified the yroot user;. Can it be recovered.
Please help.

My email to yahoo customer care on 10th July:
Dear Sir,
Thanks for your reply. I have already done that from database administrator link but the problem is not resolved. This problem has started since yesterday because of my mistake. I modified the original database administrator "user name" from the database "mysql". After modification all my permissions have lost. I have not modified the yroot user. So can you grant the administrator permissions to new user The problem is that after logging in using phpadmin i don't have permission to create a new database. The databases and tables that I created earlier are also not available to me. I am also attaching the screenshot (.gif) of what error i am getting. When i click any database in phpadmin i get the following message:
SQL query:
SHOW TABLE STATUS FROM `wpress` ;
MySQL said:#1044 - Access denied for user to database 'wpress'
If there is no solution then please reset the database, so that MySQL database can be set up again.
Regards,
(Vinay Chhabra)

HostGator is offering unlimited disk space, bandwidth and domains in shared hosting BABY Package.
Does it mean i can host 10 domains in baby plan and each site is eating + 200gb per month.
Does 10 Domains hosting in this account mean that they will host using addon technology?
What role dedicate IP will play for my websites?
If my domain registrar is different but my host is hostgator then will this plan will work for me or do i need to transfer all the 10 domains to hostgator?

I've officially decided to go with Hostgator but I'm having a hard time choosing which type of plan would make the most sense for; maybe there is something I'm not seeing and I'm hoping to get some additional insight...
Here is my plan; I plan on hosting multiple domains (business and personal) and atleast one e commerce website to start and it will eventually grow into about 5 down the road (this is going to be a drawn out process and I want to do it right).
The problem I have is I realize in order to get a true ecommerce website up in running I will need a dedicated IP address and SSL certificate for each site. If I purchase the Business plan it only comes with one dedicated IP and one SSL cert; Hostgator also told me that I'm unable to add an additional dedicated IP address or SSL cert to the business plan so I would have to purchase an additional Business Plan (12.95) per each site. It sounds like I could still host private and not SSL required sites on the business plan and as much domains as I want.
If I go the reseller path then the cost per month will be twice as much as the Business Plan and there is no dedicated IP address included. I will also have to purchase dedicated IP addresses at 2.00 a month and SSL certs as well so that method could get expensive.
I'm also not sure if the baby plan would suffice as well, but apparently not because there is a limit of 1 dedicated IP per plan
What would you guys recommend I do; I want a plan that will allow me to grow with them.
Just curious on what your guys thoughts were..
Also I read a previous post in this forum that someone said their SSL cert prompted the end-user to install the certificate; Being in Ecommerce this is obviously unacceptable to me.

Recently I had a "falling out" with DreamHost. I had their downtime and everything everyone else experiences, and I was ok with that. I could look past the small problems and love DreamHost for the good things it offered. The good cheap things(Shared Hosting).
I was running a small video blog(externally hosted videos) with WordPress as my street pimp. Everything was going great. It started out slow, as most sites do, but I was really happy to be seeing 1.5-5K unique hits daily. This went on for a good 2 months lovely. I was very satisfied. Well one day I became "Mr Big" and hit 12K in about 10 hours. DreamHost quickly turned my account off, as I was affecting the other sites on the server that I shared. Understandable. Well they eventually referred me to their VPS (dreamhostps.com)and I quickly signed up, thinking I had just solved all my problems.
Haha, what a lying **** she turned out to be. Promising me love and compassion, but only bringing deceit and pain. Spending an extra $25/mo(250 MB/250 MHz guaranteed) I thought I was golden.
Now I cant get 50 uniques an hour without getting a Internal Server Error. WHY DREAMHOST?! WHY MUST YOU HATE ME??
Im currently looking to get away from DH. I cant stand these problems. I need something that can withstand 15K unique hits on a mildly modified WP site serving external videos. What are my options?
I guess I should also include my budget... which isnt much at all. Im not going above $50/mo, but would love to get something around $35-45.

I spent an afternoon completely away from computers, and when I got back, I received this email from the Dreamhost Security Bot:
-----
We have noticed your myacct user causing a large amount of load on the webserver. We also noticed that domains under this user are running outdated web software that may be hackable. Often times when domains get hacked the hackers will launch malicious processes that use a great deal of CPU time and thus increase the load on the machine caused by your user. This does not necessarily mean that your sites are hacked, but they could be. To ensure that your user is not compromised and contributing to server load unnecessarily (and, also not engaging in illegal activity typically associated with these types of hacks) we ask that you review the following and act accordingly.
Comment: so far, so good
Most commonly hacking exploits of this nature occur through known vulnerabilities in outdated copies of web software (blogs, galleries, carts, wikis, forums, CMS scripts, etc.) running under your domains. To secure your sites you should:
1) Update all pre-packaged web software to the most recent versions available from the vendor. The following site can help you determine if you're running a vulnerable version:
[url]
Joomla (v1.5.8) : /home/myacct/disabled site.net/ (OUTDATED!)
I disabled this site six months ago.
Joomla (v1.5.12) : /home/myacct/joomla1512site.com/ (OUTDATED!)
There were three of these
WordPress (v2.8.4) : /home/myacct/wp284site.org/ (OUTDATED!)
There were six of these
- WordPress installations need to be updated to the current release of 2.8.5.
- Joomla installations need to be updated to the respective current secure release: 1.0.15 or 1.5.14.
- Any old/outdated/archive installations that you do not intend to maintain need to be deleted from the server.
The (OUTDATED!) domains above have been disabled by renaming the domain directory to end in "_DISABLED_FOR_POSSIBLE_EXPLOIT__CONTACT_DREAMHOST". Please do not reinstate them until you are ready to immediately upgrade them, or until you have already upgraded them.
-----
So, nine of my sites were disabled, for a period of four hours, with NO ADVANCE WARNING from Dreamhost.
I send them a response, pointing out that:
1. I run a tripwire program, integrit, on a daily basis. It showed no evidence that any of these sites had been hacked.
2. My access logs showed no increase in activity on this date.
They wrote, "We have noticed your myacct user causing a large amount of load on the webserver." Well, I certainly would like some details on this, but I haven't received any.
Here's part of the response I got:
-----
In the case of some of the domains that were disabled your softwares were
years out-of-date.
------
no. Wordpress 2.8.4 was released August 12, 2009. Joomla 1.5.12 was released July 1, 2009. The only software that was "years" out of date was on two sites that had been disabled by me six months ago.
It's clear that these people are making things up as they go along. All they really had to do was send me a note saying, "Hey, Bob, could you update these Wordpress and Joomla sites sometime in the next few days?"

My account which was hosted for over a year with DreamHost has been disabled on 25th November without any prior notice or reasonable explanation. They only said:
----
Your account has been disabled for Terms of Service violations.
Specifically, the clause you violated is:
Customer agrees to not engage in activities pertaining to Black Hat SEO, Spamdexing, and so-called "Scraper sites." These can all have a severely detrimental effect on server performance and are not permitted. You must find hosting elsewhere. We will not re-enable your account under any circumstances.
Terri H
----
I swear I have never engaged in such activities. I asked them to clarify the action and tell me the problem domain. But they told me nothing about that. Even if I did such things (I swear I didn't), do they have a right to prevent my access to my files and databases? How can I move to a new host without these data?
I have multiple domains on my account and 2 of them is very important to me. One of them have 9000 unique hits per day and brings a good adsense income. I cannot rebuild these websites because they are products of two years effort.
Now I'm begging them to let me access my files and mysql databases but they do not answer my tickets and emails. I lost my bearings and don't know what to do!
