Hostgator, Web.com, 1&1, WestHost, DreamHost, And Yahoo Web Hosting?

I am trying to pick a hoster, but I would like some help please. The site I am making is going to be a personal site, with a photo gallery, which will start out with about 500-1000 photos and will grow anywhere from 10-a few hundred a month. I also plan on having a small blog.

The hosters I am currently looking at are:

Hostgator, Web.com, 1&1, WestHost, DreamHost, and Yahoo Web Hosting. Which provider out of these do you think would be the best? Also are there any other providers you recommend.

Yahoo Web Hosting With WordPress
It seems that Yahoo does web hosting, and they offer WordPress as one of their one-click install kinds of things. Given the absolutely absurd responsiveness of yahoo.com, I was curious if anyone actually used them as a webhost?

Their pricing is decent, but I'm wondering about performance? I'm currently with Dreamhost, and I'm okay with them, except that WP performance isn't great (not awful, though, either), despite having wp-cache installed and operational.

So how good it Yahoo's small business webhosting? Their TOS seems pretty generous as well.

Yahoo Web Hosting - Big Name Worst Services
I bought a hosting package from Yahoo Small Business India.

Initially i was happy because the package was cheap and had good features. Database was easily set up I installed php admin tool also with one click install. No other packages are available. One has to manually upload and install.

I tried to upload phpbb but i wasn't able to upload some files. I emailed them and asked why the server gives an error while uploading .htaccess files, the reply was we don't support it. I uploaded it without .htaccess and installed it. I installed wordpess and wanted to have clean URLs but yahoo does not support mod rewrite. I don’t know much about php and databases.

9th July 2008: While I was learning I modified some tables due to which my database administrator permissions were lost. I was able to login using phpadmin but unable to create new databases and modify previously created databases and tables. I emailed customer care regarding the problem and got a useless reply on 10th July that I should change the password of the database administrator.

I changed the password but the problem was not resolved. On 11th I again emailed the problem in detail with screenshots to the customer care. On 12th, I got a reply “we have forwarded this issue to the technical team and we will inform you once this issue is resolved.”

On 12th I emailed to ask when the problem will be resolved but got no reply from them. Till date (15th July) the problem is not resolved. No one even wants to reply to emails.

See below my emails and replies given by yahoo customer care:

My email to yahoo customer care on 9th July:

I have some problem with database. By mistake i modified my original user name which i created while setting up the database. Now i can't access the tables that were created with previous user name. When i log in using phpadmin and try to see any tables i get the message. Access denied. Moreover, I also cannot create any new tables. I have NOT modified the yroot user;. Can it be recovered.
Please help.

My email to yahoo customer care on 10th July:

Dear Sir,
Thanks for your reply. I have already done that from database administrator link but the problem is not resolved. This problem has started since yesterday because of my mistake. I modified the original database administrator "user name" from the database "mysql". After modification all my permissions have lost. I have not modified the yroot user. So can you grant the administrator permissions to new user The problem is that after logging in using phpadmin i don't have permission to create a new database. The databases and tables that I created earlier are also not available to me. I am also attaching the screenshot (.gif) of what error i am getting. When i click any database in phpadmin i get the following message:

SQL query:
SHOW TABLE STATUS FROM `wpress` ;
MySQL said:#1044 - Access denied for user to database 'wpress'

If there is no solution then please reset the database, so that MySQL database can be set up again.
Regards,
(Vinay Chhabra)

Switching From Yahoo Web Hosting, Need Help On TOP Hosts
I have been hosting my website with Yahoo for almost a year now. I am looking into a new hosting service that is better than Yahoo. I will be having a Content Management System (probably Joomla) and few more databases. Planning on installing a free shopping cart.

Ecommerce Web Hosting? Going To Use Hostgator Which Plan? Business, Baby Or Reseller?
I've officially decided to go with Hostgator but I'm having a hard time choosing which type of plan would make the most sense for; maybe there is something I'm not seeing and I'm hoping to get some additional insight...

Here is my plan; I plan on hosting multiple domains (business and personal) and atleast one e commerce website to start and it will eventually grow into about 5 down the road (this is going to be a drawn out process and I want to do it right).

The problem I have is I realize in order to get a true ecommerce website up in running I will need a dedicated IP address and SSL certificate for each site. If I purchase the Business plan it only comes with one dedicated IP and one SSL cert; Hostgator also told me that I'm unable to add an additional dedicated IP address or SSL cert to the business plan so I would have to purchase an additional Business Plan (12.95) per each site. It sounds like I could still host private and not SSL required sites on the business plan and as much domains as I want.

If I go the reseller path then the cost per month will be twice as much as the Business Plan and there is no dedicated IP address included. I will also have to purchase dedicated IP addresses at 2.00 a month and SSL certs as well so that method could get expensive.

I'm also not sure if the baby plan would suffice as well, but apparently not because there is a limit of 1 dedicated IP per plan

What would you guys recommend I do; I want a plan that will allow me to grow with them.

Just curious on what your guys thoughts were..

Also I read a previous post in this forum that someone said their SSL cert prompted the end-user to install the certificate; Being in Ecommerce this is obviously unacceptable to me.

Most Dreamhost Web Sites Hackable
I signed up a Dreamhost account, and just "to see", I entered my account with my terminal. I access the /home directory and found that there's a symlink for each user that links to a directory under a hidden directory, I don't know why, but each account is located under something like this:

Code:

/home/.pluto/johnsmithblog

So basically you can find out easily who's hosted with you, just try accessing johnsmithblog.com and see if it's matching. Then you find out that a fair amount of the users hosted on the server use popular CMS/blog/forum software, ie: Wordpress. The only thing you have to do is create a PHP script with two lines of code: an include that points to the database config file (follow the same default structure of the CMS source tree used) a print function to display each variable or constant used to access the database This simple. Then, access http://mysql.johnsmithblog.com, when you're prompted for username/password, just type the database information and you have cracked the web site. How is it possible to be that simple?

* Rating system to be rated on actual reviews, pricing, uptime, features

* Ability for host to respond to review made by customer

Looking For Web Hosting For A Web Game
First I would like to start by explaining my past and current situation.

When I was in High School I created a web game called Jinopets.com that was intended for me to learn how to Code PHP and to create things with a couple of friends.

However, within 3 days the game exploded and receiving large amounts of hits and users by nothing but word of mouth. Before I knew what to do, my host said the price of my next month was going to go up from $5 to $50, and at the time I knew nothing about web hosting and was making (barely) enough money from Google Ad-sense so I gladly paid them to continue working on the game.

As the site got larger, the host continued to ask for large amounts of money until I could no longer afford the game because the host was kicking me off of his hosting because I was simply taking up too much of his space.

(I was going to link my daily usage data here, but apparently I have to post 5 times first to add links.)

Now, there is more.

I am NOT hosting the same game, but I am expecting similar numbers just increased a bit higher with a few differences.

This game extensively uses PHP GD Image Functions to generate images for characters and map data. So I expect the server load to be much higher. But PHP GD Image Functions must be on the server, Which I do not anticipate to be a problem.

What is the recommended solution for web hosting? I live in a fairly remote area and could not host my own server, but I am afraid of being removed from a hosting plan again after what happened last time.

Unknown Company "Easy Web Hosting" Taking Over My Web Sites
I just received two e-mails which may be some new kind of phishing scam. Full text at bottom. The message describes the beginnings of a "site upgrade" for my web sites, but it's not from the company that does my hosting.

I received this for two sites that I have hosted with EZpublishing. I'm having terrible problems with EZpublishing; they lost most of my databases last Friday, have failed to respond to a trouble ticket, and phone calls divert to an answering service. I've filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. They may be going out of business and selling their remaining customers to another provider. So a message regarding migration to another host isn't unexpected.

But the message below looks phony. First, they know what my domains are, but they don't apparently have access to any of my customer account information.

Second, "easywebpublishing.com" doesn't have a live web site at it, just a sort of "coming soon" page. The WHOIS info for the domain shows ownership by "Internet Names for Business". "megawebservers.com", from which the email originated, is sort of a skeletal web site that looks like a hosting provider, but doesn't have any real info. "megawebhosting.com" WHOIS info shows "Moniker Privacy Services", which usually indicates a bottom-feeder if not a scam.

Anyone else see anything like this? .....

To Find Web Host For Personal Web Site
This is my first attempt at using a web hosting company. I currently use a free service from my ISP that gives me 25 MB of space for a personal web site. After only a few weeks, I have exceeded that limit and now find myself needing much more.

My personal website will contain information of a bowling league that my friends and I belong to. I plan to have many pages of data from an Excel spreadsheet included, either in a database format, or just plain html. I also plan to have several family photos and some video on my web site. I will be adding pages on a weekly basis.

I did some research and I felt I needed something like 25G of storage for all my pages containing tables and photos. Since I am not using it for business purposes, I am looking for something very basic, if that is possible.

If anyone knows a decent host that can accomodate my needs, which is simple, but requiring a lot of space, please share your recommendations. My budget is between $5 to $10 per month.

Which Hosting Is The Best For Web 3.5?
We run a few websites (mainly online travel guides with a lot of php/sql), which receive about 100 gb of traffic every month about > 1 mln hits. Currently we're finishing developing updates, which will allow visitors create content, make search through large massives of data, etc. etc. – all the usual web 2(3) stuff. Our current servers will not cope.

Can you recommend what web hosting would be the most suitable solution?

We would like a location in the US (as most of our readers are from there), even though the company itself is located in UK.

Also, we don't have our own webmaster, so it would be great if the hosting provider can install some basic stuff of the server (like PHP, Perl, mySQL, admin panels, etc.) – for no extra charge.

Also, we currently have two hosting providers, so it would be great if they can help us move at no or little charge.

I'm choosing between RackSpace and LiquidWeb... Any comments about these? Any other recommendations?

Also, do we need Dedicated Server or Colocation or Managed? I'm just a bit lost in terminology.

Which Type Of Web Hosting
I need to switch two corporate web sites from a provider which has been providing spotty up time and poor reliability especially on their email servers; worst thing about them is that when they're down we get no notice, until we notice or customers complain. We've had outages for email that lasted as long as 72 hours. I'm not sure how our service is configured there, but I would guess shared hosting.

I understand the differences in shared hosting, virtual private or dedicated server, and dedicated hosting unmanaged or managed. What I'm not sure about is what would be best for our needs. If I dont get other advice, I'll probably sign up for shared hosting with a provider that has other service types available.

We do not do any E-commerce, but our website is our advertising and if we're down we can lose sales. Our customers need access to documentation downloads and get upset if we're down. Our current site has shown these statistics on average per day: 3000-4000 hits, 3000-4000 files 200 visits. Our monthly bandwidth was a maximum of 2GB over the past year. We need less than 50 email addresses.

Phone support is necessary, 24/7 would be nice. We need server monitoring and security, good uptime and reliability statistics or a guarantee. Control panel and statistics would be nice. We dont need any website design tools.

I've used Futurequest for a website in the past but their geared to E-Commerce and have no phone support. I have some websites registered with Dotster but they're very light on support. A colleague has used Lunarpages for similar businesses, I think, and he recommended them. He indicated they were good for him with phone support.

If you're still reading, I'd appreciate any guidance, both for type of service and for specific providers.

Fundamentals Of Web Hosting
I have a friend who is interested in learning about the fundamentals of Web hosting. Like most of the regulars here, I have a pretty solid knowledge base in the industry, but I'm not really sure what the best strategy is to teach someone the basics of hosting from a technology standpoint.

So, I'm starting a thread to see if anyone has any thoughts about this

1a. If someone asked you what to learn first about the industry, what would you tell them?

1b. Would you be willing to lay down some knowledge in this thread (or a separate tutorial)?

2. Can anyone recommend any books about the subject? There are tons of them, but if they're anything like Web design books, there are 20 crappy ones for every 1 good book. So recommendations are most welcome!

This isn't about the business side of things. No one is trying to start a new business or get into the hosting industry as a business. This is strictly academic - the nuts and bolts of Web hosting technology.

So, Web hosting 101 - where should we begin?

Moving On From IX Web Hosting
I have had my social networking site in development for a few months now, and have been using IX web hosting. Slow response times were one thing--I can handle that for now. But, especially now, emails generated by my application and sent to Yahoo are delayed by several days--apparently Yahoo is restricting the number of messages from IX servers?

My app only generates a dozen or so emails.

So ...

1) Is there a workaround with IX?

2) If I switch, should get a dedicated server? Or maybe use the cloud? I have been looking at rackspace, although I haven't received a call-back from their sales team in four days (sic)

3) Other options?

Unlimited Web Hosting, What's Next
the industry is back to where it was about 8 years ago, when only a few companies offering unlimited were labeled as "scam". Now 8 years down the road, most of the large companies offering unlimited everything, but everyone is ok with it.

What is next? How will the competition go on?

Examples:
Unlimited + Free 2nd Unlimited account.
Unlimited + Unlimited = Unlimited!!
Unlimited + FREE CASH!

How low can these companies go? How will they keep up the competition since there is no more disk space or bandwidth left to compete on. Maybe start free hosting? Start giving out cash to sign up?

If you look at one of those Top 10 hosting web sites, you will see all the companies listed now offer unlimited everything, just different pricing structure. Since they all offer the same thing, wouldn't the person looking just click on the lowest price? Since most people aren't aware of overselling or the unlimited truth, they see it as something that they will never run out of. Average consumer is not aware of these marketing gimmicks.

Honestly if my cell phone provider was offering unlimited minutes for $45 per month, and another one was offering $100 for 1000 minutes my choice would be unlimited. I would even put up with a little bit of crap from the support for $45 unlimited talk time, and a few service outages.

Some Basic Web Hosting
I've noticed that theres really a shortage of freebsd web hosts which surprised me at first because I've always considered fbsd an os built from the ground up to be a server. That also happens to be the os I have the most experience with. I can only guess its because in comparison to the linux community the freebsd is relatively small and not as well known.

So basically what I'd like to do is rent a dedicated server, run freebsd 64 on it, and hopefully get a small successful business going. I've been looking around a lot for reliable freebsd servers (I really don't have the upfront money to do colocation) and I've found one that offers me 500gb disk space and 10mbps unmetered bandwidth (or 3300 gb/month I guess).

My first question is could someone please clarify unmetered bandwidth. In the past pretty much every host I've looked at offers a set amount of bandwidth (like in gb), and I'm not completely clear on how this whole 10mbps fits in with that.

My second question is more general. Really I'm looking for honest opinions on the ease of breaking into this business. I'm sure theres a lot of people who start up and shut down constantly which contributes to the reputation of a lot of smaller hosts being unreliable, but is this a feasible goal? I can really put in any amount of time necessary but I only have about $500 to start out.

What About Namecheap Web Hosting
Namecheap has a good reputation for domain registration, but I am finding it hard to find reviews about their Web Hosting. From their own description, their data center looks good and reliable and their packages seem feature filled.

An alternative for me is A Small Orange web hosting.

Free Web Hosting
Me and a few friends decided to start a web site but we don't have a very large member base at the moment so we are on free forum hosting. I thought the next logical step would be to get some free or very inexpensive website hosting that offered a domain name. So I got gfboards.net from Godaddy.com and tried out their free hosting.

What is really bothering me is that their ad that they put on the top of every page apparently "interferes" with the registration images on PHPBB and SMF forums. I really don't know a lot about web hosts but this just sounds fishy to me. Should I switch web hosts?
