Heavy Spamming -How To Avoid

May 20, 2008

For past one week, my wordpress based blog is just dead, becasue of heavy trackback/pingback spamming(500 a minute). I've tried various plugins, but to no avail.

In addition to stop spammers before generating PHP load, I've tried all possible HTACCESS rules, but to no avail. I truly sure, I've done something wrong.

May I request the experts here to advice on how to stop this ongoing spamming?

REVIEW Absolute Design Barnsley Absolutewebdesign.co.uk Avoid Smart Merchant AVOID

Mar 3, 2009

i would just like to vocalise my utter disbelief at how incompetent and dishonest Absolute Design Barnsley aka Smart Merchant aka Absolutewebdesign.co.uk have been.

Our company signed up just over a year ago to their Absolute Design Smart Merchant shopping cart website system.

To overview, this is a pay-monthly service where they host the site and we add products to the CMS style website that Absolute Design have produced.

Being a small family business we opted for this kind of pay monthly service as it would (we hoped) give us some level of support from Absolute Design Barnsley to help with the running of the site.

At first they were helpful at getting the site setup initially but months down the line and after phonecalls or online chats with Absolute Design , the result has been no action being taken as requested.

Simple things like removing the option for other currencies... I phoned in August of 2008 and was asked to email the request to Absolute Design Barnsley , which i did. Did the other currencies get removed? Nope! I phoned and emailed many times.

This year due to the economic climate we have had many price changes to do, so i phoned Absolute Design Barnsley and asked for a holding page to be put up while i changed all the prices.

I was told this would be done within the hour.

I had my doubts that this would actually happen due to past experience, and indeed a WEEK later and the holding page STILL was not up.

During this week we had several people try and buy things at the old prices and we had to cancel orders. This is obviously frustrating for us and the customers.

Due to Absolute Design 's Smart Merchant poor system i since found out i was unable to 'turn off' the shop in any way except for basically deleting the entire payment gateway setup.

Products were also still viewable at old prices via google, even if i disabled them in the CMS itself. BAD Smart Merchant !

Also in this time i managed to decide and almost fully populate a new website for our shop, it seem's Absolute Design Barnsley cannot even produce a holding page in that same space of time.

Now, you may think why didnt i just leave? Well, after that week i rang up and asked to cancel, i was asked why and i CALMLY stated my reasons, which were basically poor support.

This resulted in Andy Clegg from Absolute Design Barnsley saying to email my request to leave and he slammed down the phone.

I emailed my request to change our Domain IPS tag and contact details and within a few minutes our website had been deleted BUT Absolute Design Barnsley decided to delete the IPSTAG for the domain, basically rendering the domain useless, including our email which we use on a daily basis.

I spoke Absolute Design again on the webchat (on a friday) and asked them to change the IPStag again, they said ok, but it probably wont get done till Monday.

I was obviously doubtful as it didnt take them long to delete the IPSTAG....

Monday comes and Absolute Design still haven't changed the IPSTAG. We are shut on mondays so i rang on Tuesday and spoke to Craig. He seemed more reasonable and said he would change it shortly. Several hours later and Absolute Design Barnsley still had'nt changed our IPSTAG and were still basically holding our domain hostage.

I ring up AGAIN, speak to craig, he says hold on for a moment, about a minute later they just hung up the phone again. I ring once more and noone answers...

Instead of swift switchover to the new site, Absolute Design Barnsley have forced us to take action with Nominet to recover our domain.

This just seems ridiculous, I'm guessing Absolute Design Barnsley must be losing alot of customers but to act the way they have is just childish.

What is the point of causing so much agro just because someone wants to cancel?

I hope this post reaches anyone else who is considering taking up services with Absolute Design Barnsley aka Absolute Web Design aka Absolute Web Hosting aka Absolute Shopping Cart aka Smart Merchant and urge you to think twice!

How To Find Out Which Is The Heavy Loading PID

Jul 8, 2008

I have some websites running on my LINUX server now.

Not all of them are running stable commercial scripts or cgi.

In fact, our server had some records down before by some package scripts.

I only know TOP to know the current server status.

But I can not know which PID is making CPU usage high, or which website.

I think if I can check the exact site or cgi causing heavy loading. Perhaps it helps us to make our server up.

Is there a way or LINUX command to find out which PID is causing heavy loading?

Under Heavy DDoS Attack ...

May 4, 2008

My website (Large Discussion Forums Site) is under a heavy DDoS attack since 3 weeks. My first host could not handle such an attack so I moved to another who claimed to have a firewall that can handle the attack, but still, the site is down.

Anyone has a good suggestion to get the site up and handle the attack? Any particular hosts that can help me?

(The Forum has its own server and does not use Apache).

503 Error Under Heavy Load

Nov 5, 2007

I have a Windows Server 2003 Enterprise (32 bits) running IIS 6.0, with ASP.Net 1.1.4322. Basically it's an application and image server, that has a large amount of concurrent accesses.

Around 800 users simultaneous access simulteneously and ASP.NET app, that will request some date from an MS-SQL Server database and point the browser to image file (all at once), every few seconds (it's a live webcast applications). The server is quite robust, with 500 GB in a RAID-5, 4 GB RAM, Dual Opteron Processor.

When the users access it, the machine memory and CPU usage a low. Also it has plenty of bandwidth, since it's directly tied to a Gigabit port on the datacenter. I kept an eye on all paramenters and there is no imporant bottleneck on the hardware side.

Here is my problem: after some "images" are sent, with 800 users, the users start getting a 503 error, and can no longer access the images.

On IIS HTTPErr Logs, I found these errors to be "Timer_ConnectionIdle". I believe it has something to do with the way the Application Pool is handling all those concurrent connections. No references to it are made on Windows Logs.

I've already tried tweaking all those paramenters on the Application Pool, but no results. For example, I tried increasing the Request Queue Limit value, but that doesn't seem to make any difference.

Also, I inserted "MaxUserPort=65534" on TCP configurations on regedit. Rebooted. Also, tried turning off keep-alive and decreasing connection timeout, then a restart of the w3svc (see [url]for the explanation about this). Tried changing each parameter individually and tested. No big difference after each modification.

Has anyone ever seen this? Is there a way to get this solved? Again, this address [url] has a description of what seems to be my problem... but I didn't manage to get this solved.

VPS Hardware Node: Too Heavy

Nov 24, 2007

I'm currently considering to enter the VPS market

I have recently acquired a nice box (2x Dual Core Opteron 275 2.2 GHz, 16 GB RAM, 16x500 GB SATA @ RAID5/6) but I'm unsure if it isn't smarter to buy smaller machines (like X2 5600+, 4 GB RAM, 2x400 GB HDD) and put like 15-20 customers on it.

Yes, I know that the hard drives are more than oversized for VPS hosting

The Opteron server will have a very, very nice I/O performance so that customers are going to have a good feeling while working on it. To refinance the costs it would of course be neccessary to put not less than 125 VPS on one box, so I can imagine that there'll be a bottle neck somewhere (CPU power I'd guess?).

What is your opinion? Big boxes with high performance and loads of customers, or small boxes with not-so-many VPS?

Also, all the websites collectively have only consumed around 60 GB data transfer in 6 days. How do I find out what exactly is causing heavy data transfer?

Hosts With HEAVY DUTY Spam Protection..

Jul 25, 2007

Are there any hosting companies that use an Enterprise strength SPAM solution such as IronPort?

We have 3-4 business websites and spam, especially within the last 6 months, has become a tremendous problem. At least 100 spam emails a day are being delivered.

Spam filters do not solve the problem - they simply put some percentage of spam in a folder, often genuine emails, and we still have to go through it manually.

Do not mind paying a premium for the hosting. Any hosts that offer HEAVY DUTY spam protection?

Spamming Without DNS

Apr 11, 2008

I would like someone more knowledgeable perhaps explain this.

I have an email address on my own domain that has existed for about 4 years now. About 5 weeks ago, the VPS it were on died and so the email went unresolved for about 3 weeks. I then transferred to a new VPS, and set up the email. About a week later, I moved again.

I left up the 2nd VPS for DNS propagation to take place. What interest me is that the server is still running about a week later, and the email server is still getting spam messages directed to it. So somehow, the spams are being send to the old IP, with a valid recipient, even when the most stubborn of DNS cache should have updated by now.

So it seems (some) spammers are just capturing email address and the IP for the server, storing it, and mass spam straight to those IPs instead of resolving the server.

MySQL Remote Connection Problem After A Heavy Usage

Aug 8, 2008

I have 2 identical Fedora8 boxes with Apache 2.2.8, MySQL 5.0.45 and PhP 5.2.4. I use one as the Web+DB server (say box A), and the other (box B) just as the Web server connecting to the DB server on box A. I use this 2 machine configuration to test a LAMP based-Web application. I have a client program on other machines that can emulate a massive web workload to these 2 servers; it can emulate hundreds to thousands of users using the application simultaneously.

Before running the test, the connection to the DB server from both boxes seem fine. Using the mysql client program on either box A or B trying to connect to the DB, the connection goes through instantly. In the /etc/my.cnf file, I have max_connections=4096 and max_user_connections=4096. Note that the web app uses one single db user to connect to the db. To allow remote connection, I inserted one record into the user table of the mysql db whose the host field's value is '%' (allow connection from all remote hosts).

After running the test (which I found out that many requests sent to box B failed), mysql client program on box A is still able to connect to the db instantly; but the one on box B has a problem: it takes extremely long (5 - 10 minutes or even more) to establish the connection, it doesn't time out, just takes that long. I believe that's the cause for the failure of requests to box B.

Consuming Heavy Bandwith Upto 2000 US$+ Per Month

Jun 14, 2008

We are facing a very problematic situation since last several months due to accessive bandwith usage. But we are sure this is only local traffic.

We have 2 Servers with our hosting provider
Server A - this is a VPS
all our webfiles/domains/dns/nameservers reside on this server

Server B - this is a dedicated server
contains only databases

(we are actively running vbulletin based forums on this servers)

Since last several months we are facing huge bandwith increase since we have transferred only our databases to Server B. (earlier database + everything was on Server A) We never ever consumed even 50% of the entire allocated bandwith in past when we were on Server A.

But only after moving the database from Server A to Server B we have found this tremendous increase,

Can we do something about same ? as both the servers belong to same hosting provider.
We are not sure but expect that this is only local network traffic between 2 servers.

What really pisses me off is David Turner over at UWH has accused me of sending the spam. Even after I told him is was not me, he still accused me of sending the spam and threatened to bill my credit card for the spam fees.

I can tell you the $hit will hit the fan if he charges me anything and he had better stop accusing me of sending spam and appologize and it would be nice if THEY WOULD STOP THE SUSPENSION OF MY ACCOUNT!

Catching A Spamming Virtual Host

Aug 8, 2007

I am managing few virtual domains on a server.

Recently I have seen lots of email activity. Most of the emails are being sent with php scripts which are run under apache. what I want is to catch the culprit domain

so the sender's return path in most cases is root@xxxxx as apache is running under root user.

The server runs plesk admin panel.

I know I can always inspect messages in the queue, qmhandle is good as well to do so. but is there any better way.

e.g. is there a way that instead of emails sent from php scripts with apache user domain name in return path and not root@server etc.

any tools to analyze this activity and then take necessary actions.

123-Reg.co.uk - Avoid Like The Plague

Apr 21, 2008

I thought I should share with everyone my terrible experience with 123-Reg's dedicated servers.

I'd had one of their Linux servers for about 2 years when it suddenly stopped responding. I emailed their support team (there is no telephone support for dedicated server customers for some reason) who responded saying that the hard drive had failed and that they'd assign a new server to our account and copy over the data (if still readable) asap.

After a few days they responded again to my original support ticket explaining that they were unable to assign a new server to my account and that I'd have to go through the order process again. I did this and waited for them to try and copy the data over; the only response to this was that they'd "request that a technician connect the old hard drive to the new server", and the support ticket status was updated to "solved", despite the fact that it clearly wasn't.

Days turned into weeks and not a single byte of data had been copied across. I opened yet another support ticket asking when they would do this, and this is the response I got:

"You will need to login as Administrator and copy files across. If you want us to copy certain files, we need to know what directories you want copied and there will be a charge of £100+VAT."

That's right, £117.50 for them to restore our data despite it being COMPLETELY THEIR FAULT that the server had gone offline. I could possibly understand the charge if somehow I'd managed to cause the hard drive failure but obviously this was not the case.

I seriously have no idea how they expect to be able to justify this charge.

So you might be thinking, "why not just login as administrator and copy it across yourself?" Good question - unfortunately they only give administrator or root access to customers who request it via their control panel, and those who do request root access subsequently forfeit any software updating/patching/configuration or technical support. In other words, I had to sacrifice all this if I wanted my data back, which was not an acceptable course of action for me as I am in no way a qualified server administrator.

One of the reasons I went with 123-Reg in the first place is that they promised from the outset to take care of all server maintenance for me.

As I'm typing this, the server (and consequently all sites on it) has been offline for over a month and I have come to the conclusion that 123 are utterly incompetent server providers. I'm going to cancel my account immediately and take my business elsewhere, and assure people that staying well away from this company will be the best decision you ever make.

Has anyone else had any bad experiences with 123-Reg?
