Geo Load Balancing Via Timing Connections
I'm working on a script to help users get routed to the nearest, fastest server for the best ping. I'm in 2 datacenters, one on the east and one one the west coast of the US.
I've looked at some of the geo lookup programs based on IP, but they either seem inaccurate or expensive.. and just downright difficult to use.
I found out that some geo load balancers use the connection speed to figure out the best route. So, I'm trying to think of a way of timing the users connection from multiple server locations.
Has anyone here done that sort of thing before? Any suggestions on how to best do that?
Two completely different methods I've considered:
1. putting 2 images on a web page, and using javascript to time the loading of them.
2. pinging the user IP from each coast and seeing which is fastest. (Is there a lighter way than ping? )

Synchronizing And Balancing 2 Geo-separate Servers
I know this is not an awesome idea, but I'd like to try it. A friend and I want to share (home) servers. We both have fairly decent upload and we both have nice (dual core, 1GB RAM+) servers, so that's good. Another thing I'd like is failover for when one of our servers go down (I've got that part covered with my own DynDNS client). We're both running Windows servers. Since I cant really use a load balancer in this situation, we'll be using round robin DNS. Now here's the questions: How do we keep our MySQL servers synced? Should I use rsync or something else for files? How do we handle PHP sessions across servers? If you don't think the load balancing thing will work out, I'd still like to do synchronization and failover. My friend is in another state by the way, we're not neighbors or anything so we can't just run some cables from one house to the other.

the loads on my server is VERY HIGH and it needs to be upgraded fast. Load Balancing / HA
We host a large number of small websites and are looking for high-availability and the ability to do maintenance on our application servers, so I'm looking for a load balancing solution. At this point, I'm considering Zeus ZXTM LB software, the Coyote Point e350si, and potentially an F5 1500 LTM. The F5 solution is a total budget buster, and the Coyote Point UI is rough around the edges, but I've used them and they are reliable. Zeus looks like a winner with a great UI, but I haven't heard much about their reliability. Bandwidth requirements are low at this point, so this is mostly about reliability and ease of configuration of a moderately complex set of services. Any opinions on these vendors, or alternates I should consider?

CPU Load Balancing
I run a GSP (Game Server Provider) and i just baught 2 new octi xeon servers(Intel 5320) i am having a problem with the load balancing, it dosen't balance de cpu usage on all cores but only on one, and it gets at about 80-85% and 3%CPU usage on the other one.

Load Balancing - What Is Needed
I´m thinking about setting up a load balanced setup. I´ll start with load-balancing MySQL, and after, I´ll go with the webservers. MySQL is currently more important. I have two different bandwidth providers, with two different networks, in the same datacenter. Pings between both are under 1ms. I was think about buying 4 servers, two for a MySQL Cluster (NDB), and two for a UltraMonkey Load Balancer setup. The MySQL Cluster API would be installed in another server, currently in use. So, what else would I need? My intention is to have two servers in one provider, and two servers in another provider. Would this kind of setup require large quantities of bandwidth? Both providers wouldn´t let me pass a diferent cable for this purpose, so I would have to use the uplink. Also, for webservers, I would only need two more servers, right? Maybe rsync them, and have sessions stored in database would be the best choice? Thank You

Global Load Balancing
Looking for quick, easy global load balancing solution. This is actually for a temporary situation (we need to move to a new DC and need to make this seamless as possible). Linux solution preferred if possible. What can we use to get this achieved? How exactly does it work? does it need VPN between locations or is client redirected to a different IP somehow? Load Balancing - What Is Needed ...?
I would like to setup a load balancing pair of servers. Currently, I have about 7 servers, all of them working stand alone. I would like to use two of them to host some "power-hungry" websites, that require high availiability. What kind of hardware will I need to do it? I´ve already searched for some, and found load-balancers from F5 which seem to be very good, however they seem to be very expensive (9000 dolars maybe?). Easy Load Balancing
I'd really like to set up load balancing for one of my CPU heavy apps. (it's on about 10 machines that are NOT identical, ie. some big, some small) Currently, I just use a PHP script to direct people to various servers, but it doesn't handle balancing & failover well, and I don't like that the URL changes to www2, www3, www4, etc. I've looked in to some simple balancers like Pen, Pound and Balance, but I can't find a crucial weighting / balancing configuration. I've also looked at DNS round robin, but that doesn't seem to be sticky, or have weighting or failover. Load Balancing Over WAN?
I'm looking at load balancing a group of servers located at different data centers. How feasible is this? Which options/solutions should I take a look at? I would like to route using some sort of IP tunneling or similar so that the user doesn't see ww1.domain.com etc. I will be distributing the load of the static/dynamic web pages, no database clustering. I would prefer something a bit more intuitive than round robin. Perhaps directing incoming traffic based on existing server load etc. Most of the load balancing solutions I've looked at assume all your servers are on the same local network.

Affordable Effective Load Balancing?
i've got a server that averages 3-4 TB a month. it is starting to max out the limits on the servers capacity and i want to setup another server on a different network that can help load balance, and if one of the servers are down for any reason the other server would take on all the load while the other server is down. what is the best solution for this?

There's something I've been desperately trying to resolve, but failed, and the question is can load balancing solution be applied to a shared hosting plan, will I need two plans in this case? Load Balancing For A Web Site
I have a growing website that needs to move from its current single-server setup to using a cluster of servers to deliver its dynamic pages. My current host does not support load balancing among its servers, so I'm left to configure that on my own. Round-rovin DNS doesn't work for me as I'll need certain http requests to always go to the central server (the one with the master database). My distro is Redhat 9, and I only access the server remotely through SSH. I'm using Apache 2 (and PHP and Mysql). Any ideas on the simplest way to do this? I've read a bit about LVS (http://www.linuxvirtualserver.org/) but it seems to require a kernel recompile, which is way beyond the things I would dare to try...

Load Balancing Two Whm Servers
is there any way to do this? I know the clustering system built into whm is only for DNS, not for actually serving websites. What I would like is that visitors to a site could be directed to one of two servers, transparently (no www.server1.site.com, www.server2.site.com, it looks idential but are just directed to different ips).

Load Balancing For Two Servers In UK And USA

Load Balancing And Server Clusters
I run a pretty large website and it has outgrown the sever that the site is currently on so i was told to go with load balancing or a round robin solution. Have order a load balancer and a second server but don't understand the concept behind have a server cluster. my host told me that the data would have to be synchronized on both servers which i get but if everything is identical on both servers when i run out of space one and i cant add any more hard drives because all the slots are used up, if the data is identical wouldn't both servers be full and if i even added a third server would that one be full to if you understand what im saying.... anyway my point is that i know there is a way that you can add as many servers as you want to a server pool/farm but don't know what kind of configuration i would need. if anyone could help shed some light on this I would appreciate it thanks.

Firewall Load Balancing Recommendation Needed
Can any one recommend a firewall which supports load balancing? We have a number of servers with in our rack which are currently hosted behind one firewall box but I would like to have the firewall load spread across multiple boxes. Scaling PHP Applications /load Balancing Etc.
While I'm fairly familiar with running and serving Java applications (how they handle their load..etc) I'm fairly new "mass" hosting PHP applications. PHP has a lot of advantages though, for example it's a lot more stateless and you can run a lot of PHP applications on a server. Online Processing/load Balancing Services
I work for an academic department which utilizes one web server, and has few issues with processing time and/or speed during the year. However, there is one point during the year when there is a need for a significant number of processing transactions, which opens all at once at a certain time on a certain day for everyone, that the web server cannot handle and is currently not occurring. I need to find a service that can handle this. Basically, we would just need to insert info into a database (or whatever input form works) and then later export that data into a text file to be inserted by us at a later time. This is not credit card processing, which is why I'm posting. However, this would need to be secure. We only need the use of the servers and a database.

Hello, we have a few web servers that run Windows 2003 Server and IIS for web page hosting. We develop custom applications and don't do "web hosting" per se. What is the best way to do this in a load balanced environment? Load Balancing 2 Web Servers And 2 MySQL Servers
I was wondering if it is possible to cluster 2 web servers and 2 mysql servers with only one server working as load balancer. I am planning to use LVS (ldirectord and heartbeat). Let's say I have 3 IPs allocated to the load balancing server. 111.222.111.222 (Main IP) 111.222.111.223 (Web Load Balancing IP) 111.222.111.224 (MySQL Load Balancing IP) If a connection is made to .223 it would pass the request to one of the web nodes. If a connection is made to .224 it would pass the request to one of the MySQL nodes. Is it possible to do this? If not, can I run, for example, nginx on 223 IP address to provide forward proxy? (Then it would not be able to HA but the main point is to load balance so) Also, what would be the best way to keep the data same on both web servers? This is a web cluster for a very high traffic forum with a lot of uploads every hour so it has to do real time synchronization. I heard that DRDB is only one way and not two way so I'm not going to be able to use this.

I run a website and do a round robin dns with locations in two countries and three locations. Is there a good dns solution (preferably software based) that allowed me to geo target the request? For example, anything within 1k miles of california goes to that location, anything within the area of florida goes to that location. Something like that?

Geo-Download For Lighttpd
A user from USA clicks www.domain.com/video/vid.flv and they go to the USA server to download. A user from Europe clicks the same link and they go to Netherlands server. A user from Asia clicks the same link and they go to Hong Kong. How can I configure Lighttpd to point *.flv to a specific server based on location. I don't want the www.domain.com to change, I would like it to always show www.domain.com but point to different countries depending on where the person is located. I want this for *.flv only

I'm not sure why my brand new dual proc quad core xeon 2.5ghz harpertown gets time out when the server load is under .5 Like it'll be running ultra fast and suddenly, I can't get into ssh, whm, my websites or anything. When I ping it, no reponse. Is it because it restarted itself?

Apache Timing Out
I have recently tweaked my server (AMD 3000+ 1gb Ram 10mbps port) by configuring the httpd.conf, my.cnf and php.ini. I am pleased to say that the server is now responding well and the load is always below 1.00. However, sometimes a user will experience a time-out through their browser. CRON Job Timing Out
i have had a problem for some time now, regarding my CRON jobs. I am trying to download a large amount of data from ebay (through their API, totally legal and aboveboard) using php, but my CRONjob times out. A Tale Of Woe And Bad Timing
I decided to merge 2 old dedicated servers into 1 colocated machine with better specs the old machines have a combined number of about 280 accounts. I purchased a Broadberry Server and requested a specific setup and OS (CentOS) after some delays they finally got it working and shipped it to the Datacentre I chose 49pence/RapidSwitch for colocation in the UK I received a email from 49pence on how they wanted it setup and Broadberry did this as well which was good. Unfortunately I got the email it had been received and installed from RapidSwtich before I received the email regarding server admin and password info Broadberry set a very weak password up a bit of an oversight this As within 12 hours of it being installed it was hacked! Being a UK bank holiday we were unable to do anything till today And now we are having to retrieve the server to reinstall everything and start again! I hope the companys involved will be cooperative so we can get this up and running asap. My severs at Coreix end later this month. A lesson to be learned for us and I hope anyone reading Next time we have a check list to make sure nothing gets overlooked! Luckly no data on the server and no harm done other than cost and time.

FTP Timing Out When Uploading Small Files
There is a behavour with my server FTP when uploading a whole directory with many files in many sub-directories Very often, the server disconnect itself when actively uploading files and the log simply says 'timeout' It is as if the file got 'stuck' half way, and the FTP consider them as idle, therefore it disconnect you with a 'timeout' before reconnecting you. But i have no problem uploading a single 200mb file to the server via FTP. I suppose no problem with 'keep alive' So what is this behavior and how to solve it?

Browser Timing Out/ftp Issues Asia Pacific/Australia/Oceania To US
I have a VPS located in LA, USA. For over a week now I have had the following network issues: - browser timing out (for me and visitors to my site) - ftp connection issues The server load is low so it's not server related. Traceroute TO the server appears fine. Traceroute FROM the server to users IP's appears to have issues over the SingTel/Optus network. My webhost says it's an issue for SingTel/Optus. SingTel/Optus Engineer say: "Our testings point to a problem either within Cogent's network or on a peering link between Cogent and Singtel in LA. I'd suggest that the owner of the domain (me!) approach his hosting provider and have them escalate to Cogent. We can't escalate to Cogent as we have no peering with them." So I've been the meat in the sandwich for over a week with no sign of a fix. My options appear to be to either move the VPS away from the webhost and host it locally (Australia) or to somehow wait for someone to step up and take responsiblity and get this resolved. My heart says wait as it's not *my* responsibility but it's costing me financially and professionally. Anyone else experiencing similiar/same issues from the Asia Pacific region to the US?
