Phpsuexec, Forum Uploads On IPB Not Working
We have a server that we just changed over to PHPSUEXEC. On this server, we have a large IPB (Invision Power Board) forum that we have not been able to get uploads in the forum back working again. Users are getting the message that they don't have permission, and to contact an administrator.

I have looked on IPB's forum for PHPSUEXEC related issues, but can't find a solution. Of couse, before phpsuexec the "upload" folder had 777 file permissions, but under phpsuexec this must be 755. It isn't working though.

Anyone had experience with this with IPB and know how to fix it?

Forum Under Attack
Our forum is under attack...and our host won't do anything except tell us that our load is too high and that they might turn off our account.

But, we've already turned off the forum...the only load is a note that says it's down for maintenance...no database...no html...nothing.

In a very short amount of time it has has over 300,000 page requests for the same three pages.

Is there anything on my side (since I don't run the server) that I can do to stop this or prevent it...etc?

Community Forum
I've got my new hosting provider choice narrowed down to two providers (ServIt & WiredTree) for a Managed VPS. From the reviews here they both seem to be very similiar in customer support and reliability. The only difference I have found is that ServIt does have a community forum and WiredTree does not have a forum. It's wierd to be choosing a hosting provider based on this, so I thought I would come get your opinions on this.

Hosting A Forum
What kind of webhost will I need for phpBB forum?

Here are the requirements :

A webserver or web hosting account running on any major Operating System with support for PHP

A SQL database system, one of:
FireBird 2.0 or above
MySQL 3.23 or above
MS SQL Server 2000 or above (directly or via ODBC)
Oracle
PostgreSQL 7.x or above
SQLite

PHP 4.3.3 or above with support for the database you intend to use. The optional presence of the following modules within PHP will provide access to additional features, but they are not required.
zlib Compression support
Remote FTP support
XML support
Imagemagick support

Of course free hosts are preferred, but nothing too expensive will do fine aswell. n_n

Creating A Forum
I want to create a forum and have not got any idea in where to start. All I have at the moment is a PhpBB2 template which I would like to use.

The few questions I have are:

1: Do I need to purchase Webspace, if so which are recommended?
2: How would I install the template to the webspace and would the users login information get stored in a seperate database or would that come with the web hosting?

All help would be very much appriciated as i have no idea where to start and how to get it up and running.

After Forum Migration
I transfered my forum from one server to another. ips changed. Before the transfer, I closed the board and put an announcement. After the transfer I opened the board and started posting.

Now, there are other members who've posted after the transfer but I've noticed decrease in activity. One of the members emailed me and told me that the board is still closed for him with the announcement shown. That message is from the old and not the new server. So how is this happening? What should he or I do? I and some other members can access and post normally.

The forum is is the one in my sig.

Just see if it's closed for you or not.

VBulletin Forum On Vps
My site has outgrown my current host and I'm strongly leaning towards a vps. I am relatively inexperienced with web hosting as for the last 18 months I've had very few issues with my current host (Stream101.com). They are currently saying my site is very memory and processor intensive which is why I'm going to have to leave them soon(I can't pay the dedicated server prices that would give my site the stability I desire).

About my site:

My site has 18,000+ users, its about 18 months old. 5,632 threads, 78,967 posts. It used about 150gig of bandwidth last month. The site is growing quickly (IMO). The site makes some money, but not enough to justify spending what it would cost for a dedicated server.

I'm happy to provide any other information, but what I am looking for is suggestions on:

1) Is a VPS the right choice for my site in your opinion.

2) What hosting company's would you suggest I look into.

3) How much ram/processor speed should I be looking for

4) any other information you feel I should know about this.

Mysql Optimization For VB Forum
I have a friend which owns a 2k alexa rank forum using VB

The server hangs and he gets mysql connection error in logs

Quote:

Database error in vBulletin : mysql_connect() [<a href='function.mysql-connect'>function.mysql-connect</a>]: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock'

The server is a dual Pentium D with 4GB RAM

currently 600 users online and 20% RAM used

in rush hours there are 2000 users online and 50% RAM used

We want to optimize mysql - this is the current my.cnf

Website/forum Takeover
I'm the owner of a website/forum over the last year i have had health problems that forced me to let someone else administrate my site.

What has become apparent to me is that during the last year this individual has been manipulating the situation to take over my site.

What i would like to know given that all is in my name and that i have sole access to the master account. what do i need to do to make sure that if i have to rid myself of this person how do i protect my site.

He has access to the cpanel within my master account mysql ect..and hasn't changed the pswrd yet, if he does change it i still have access through the master account, but i would need to know how i can reset that password if he does. and lock him out if i cant change the pswrd.

Secondly he upgraded our forum to phpbb3 and in the proccess in the forum he has removed me as founder, and put himself as founder, i have asked him 3 times to put me to founder but he has yet to comply, and i have yet to make a big deal of this to avoid him taking action against me first, im not as tech savy as he is unfortunatly. For this i would need to know how to lock him out.Changing myself to founder and removing his access. also such as checking to see if he has created any sleeper admin accounts as a backdoor if i fire him.

legally i would also need to know what i can do, if he takes a copy of our forum and creates a knockoff site with it as he has also been manipulating the site's membership and a split will most likely result if i take action against him, do i have any legal recourse even though we are in different countries?

Hosting A Snitz Forum
I have been hosting a Snitz ASP forum on a friends Windows 2003 webserver for the last 4 years. The forum has been slowing down recently and my friend has told me to sling my hook!

I'm presuming that our Snitz forum must have a database behind it (think its Access).

This is where I'm getting confused when it comes to looking for web hosting services.

I'm not really sure what I need.

Hosting A Forum On Vps
I want to host a invision forum. I have a lot of exp admining and modding but I have never run one myself.

I plan on using 15-30 gigs of material on site and the rest will be offsite storage.

I do not know how many members I will have it could be just a couple of hundred to a couple of thousand.

My question. I was planning on going with WiredTree because of all the great reiviews out there. And buying thier vps512 which has 60 gigs of storage and 800 monthly bandwith.

Will that be enough do you think? More, less? I would like to stay within 50-100 dollars. since I am mainly running this for recreation and not looking to make a profit.

I have never hosted a website or such before, but after reading here and doing research I do not really want a shared server.

SMF Forum Optimising
After several stressful hours of reading these forums I have finally decided to post my own question. I have lurked and read here for months and picked my own reseller hosting after reading up on here.

I have a client with a problem with her SMF forum...

She set it up 6 months ago and needs to upgrade her hosting. Her current host is Ausweb and she has been suspended for abuse.

The scenario I need help with is SMF forum v.1.1.5
Traffic per month: 11-15 gbs
Hits per month: 10,000
Storage: 1084.8/2000 MB
Members: >200

She has been suspended 3 times last month, charged apparently for an upgrade and has forked out almost $1500 for 12 months from April, which I calculate to be $125 per month for 12 months... which should be a dedicated server!

Does she need a dedicated server?

Would a VPS suffice?

If she does.. who is economical as at this point it is non profit site although we are looking at changing that, through advertising.

What is the best scenario with the least added expense for this disillusioned forum owner who has a successful site but has had a horrendous experience with hosting?

How Did This Forum Spammer (sagepowder) Do This
I just found posts every a few days from an apparent spammer "sagepowder" in my forum (not so popular and has nothing to do with skiing). The subject is always "new here".

The content is "Any snowboarders or skiiers on this forum? I am planning a trip to BC on a snowboarding trip next week" or "I am new here, just saying hello".

I checked the apache log and it doesn't seem to be a robot script posting this. i.e. it browses to the index page, picked up my hidden field that blocks robots, post new topic, the go back to index page.

What surprised me is that when I google this guy, I got 108,000 results with the same content on tons of forums! All with total post number of 1 or 2 on each forum:

How did he do this? How to block this?

Cleaning Up PhpBB Forum
I am in the process of cleaning one old unused phpBB technical forum. As of now the forum is full of spam posting and junk users. I did upgrade it to the latest version, applied a few security tools to prevent spam users from registering. It seems they aren't that much effective. I still get around 50 new spam posting a day.

Do you have any suggestions/tools to help me in getting up the database cleaned. Do you prefer migrating to another forum software. If yes can you recommend some tool for that?

Moving Forum To New Host
I'm trying to figure out the best way to eliminate downtime when I move my forum to a new host.

I have never had to move a site before so I don't know what's going to happen? How long does it take for the DNS changes to update? I don't want people to type in the forum's url and not be able to get the site?

I should add that I am switching from phpbb to vBulletin and have the new software sitting on the .org name of the forum at the new host. Should I just tell people if they have a problem the day after I make the switch to go to the .org as a default?

Exceeding Lunarpages With VBulletin Forum
Hello,

Lunarpages and jerked me around enough times that I'm considering other options. I won't go into too many details, but they recently moved me to a new server that was configured completely different and my forum ended up being down for 4 days. During that time, their support was non-existent. Now, they keep sending me emails that I'm exceeding my alloted CPU usage. They want me to upgrade.

Admittedly, I am using their lower end hosting, which I think I paid $100 for the year or something.

After the way I've been treated, I can't imagine spending another dime at Lunarpages. So I'm looking for new hosting options. My forum is growing, but it certainly isn't a large forum. I have about 30-40 new members join each day and I usually have about 1,000 active members. I'm running vbseo and a few mods, but my unique hits per day is probably around 2,000 uniques per day for the forum give or take. My forum does use quite a bit of bandwidth as people upload songs they have recorded and submit them for review frequently.

I've considered the notion of having a server built for me and paying $100 per month for colocation and being done with it, but I'd prefer to avoid this cost, if possible.

Any suggestions?

Reliable Hosting For A Vbulletin Forum
I am the owner of the vbulletin forum. The forum is young but it is growing rapidly. It has 11000 posts, 800 members and about 30 users online. I use many mods which are server intensive.

I was on a semi-dedicated hosting (Westnic), which I shared with my friend to reduce the costs. Now I feel I should move on, because this package is becoming too small for both of us.

I wanted to upgrade my hosting package to a bigger one, but now when I have read so many horrible stories about this host, I really don't want to stay with Westnic.

So I am looking for a reliable host for my forum.

I am still now sure whether I need a semi-dedicated, VPS or a dedicated server. Also, I am not sure how much dedicated memory a forum like mine would need. Also, I am not sure about the location of the server - does it really matter?

Redirecting Forum From Subdomain To Subdirectory
We are wanting to move our forum from a subdomain where it lies currently to a subdirectory of the main site.

I know that this could be done via htacess, but I am wanting to make sure that we don.t lose any of the backlinks that we have coming in, or any page rankings that we have accumulated.

I have a htaccess rule, but I guess I need to know if

a) it is Correct

b) where to put it

Now please bear with me as I cant post urls, so this bit is quite difficult to get out... I have replaced the link elements with CAPPS, such as www becomes 3WS

Options +FollowSymLinks -Indexes
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST}!^3WS. [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(.*).DOMAINHERE.TLD [NC]
RewriteRule (.*) HTTPCOLONSLASHSLASHDOMAINGOESHEREWITHTLD/%1/$1 [R=301,L]

Do i still need to point the subdomain at a folder with just this in, and then have a separate folder where the actual forum goes....

or do I put this in the htaccess, then also point at the directory to be the location for the /forum/

Started A Vbulletin Forum And Site
I am about to purchase a vbulletin license in a few days and start a site. I will start the forums first and get the talking going and build the main site afterwards. Of course the site will suck at first as far as visitors. But what is a good hosting plan to support me for a good little while? I project we'll get up to 150 active users at a time within the first 6 or 7 months with about 50 browsing the main site....(nothing wrong with wishful thinking )

So, what hosting plan is best to hold me for a while? Not which company, but what specs of the plan are best to hold 100 active users at a time? I dont want to continue to upgrade my hosting plan alot. I'd rather just buy a nice shared hosting plan now to hold me for at least a year or so....until I have to upgrade.

For those who have dedicated servers, at one point is it time to upgrade to a dedicated server?

Vps Specs To Set Up A Forum
We're setting up a vBulletin forum, and I'd like to know what we'll need from a vps. We expect 5000-10000 hits a day, maybe 30-60 users on at a time, and we'd like to keep quick load speeds.

So how much ram would we need to achieve fast speeds?

How many mysql database might we need (just roughly for such a sized forum)?

How much bandwidth will we need?

Plus any other info you can give!

I could also do with some VPS hosting recommendations. We'll be adding other sites (with less traffic) in the VERY near future, so we'd like them to be accomodated. A host with good support/ response time is a must, and one with excellent uptime to!

CMS/Forum/Premium Content
I am currently working on a site which has a series of tutorials on (videos, pdfs and html content.) I have not actually written a line of code for the site yet, as I want to make sure that I can provide great content as well as a nice site.

Anyway the idea is that users land on my site, can view the free tutorials without having to sign up. However to access other tutorials, users are required to sign up and pay a (very small) premium membership. The tutorials are to be sold per tutorial, so a user can buy access to one at a time.

eg

User buys tutorials for topic 'apples' and user then has unlimited access to the entire 'apples' package - videos, pdfs etc.
If the user then decides to purchase the topic 'pears' they then also have unlimited access to that topic.

As well as providing the content, I would also like to provide a forum. Ideally users would have a single sign up for the site, so they can then buy topics and use the forum. It would also be slicker if the user only had one log-in form for the whole site.

I have been thinking about ways of implementing this and have come up with the following:

1) Use a static site for some simple static pages - eg about us, home, contact us etc. and just link from the main site to the forum. In the forum i could have restricted access to certain sub-forums and just manually change the access once i receive payments [unless there is a simple way to automate this?]

2) Use a CMS which has forum module and a restricted access module

Ideally I would like to have all of the processes automated and use the CMS, but is there any other methods that people can suggest? Also can anyone recommend a CMS with these abilities? I have looked at Joomla, and have seen that it has a module for the payment part, but it looks like a lot of mucking around to get the forum integrated properly.

Does anyone know if you can set up a forum software which you can just point to a database where it will get the user information that it needs for a member?

Feel free to post any thoughts on my set up, I read a couple of posts below that a guy is looking to do a similar thing, but don't worry my content is very specific and is nothing to do with computers.

Static Server + Forum Cluster
my current servers are part of this mess with Alphared:
[url]

what I'm looking for:

static content main server:
average cpu, average ram
15-20gb data tops, but could use a fast drive
need about 6tb/m of higher quality bandwidth
2 machine cluster for forums

only thing on this will be vBulletin forums.
current database is about 6gb (~7 million posts)
averaging about 800 members active per 15 mins
this isn't for a business, so it all comes out of my pocket. however, after the $#@! with Alphared I do recognize the importance of a good host and I am willing to put money toward that as needed. however, my goal is in the $600-$800/m range for everything.
is that price range doable? if not, what is a reasonable price for what I'm asking? and can anyone recommend reliable hosts (especially one that can correctly setup the cluster for the forums).
