DefconHost - Unethical

Apr 10, 2008

Normally I don't even post on forums, however this was such a blatant rip that I had to share it.

Firstly, let me start by saying that for the past 3 days or so, I've been browsing WHT as a guest looking for a provider in the offers section, checking reviews, etc.

When my searched moved on to Google, I found a dedicated server provider that was advertised in the sponsored listings, the website "defconhost.com" seems to be an exact copy of "fusednetwork.com" which is advertised in the offers section here at WHT.

I haven't notified anyone of this yet, but I figured this would be the best place to start, since the community should know about this, as well as whoever runs FusedNetwork (My impression was that the WHT user "David" was some way affiliated with them)

It would be interesting to hear what David has to say in regards to this, if he wasn't already aware.

For those of you who don't like reading:
fusednetwork.com
defconhost.com

Compare the two.

My Experience With DefCONhost

May 10, 2008

Just want to tell you about my experiance with defCONhost.

I ordered a defcon 1 server from them on April 28th 2008. We agreed a package with full ddos protection and a large IP block plus a custom script. This was to cost me $120 a month.

The email support was really fast up until i ordered and i was happy with what they said and they had all the answers to my questions.

Once i order i got a email back saying they recieved the payment and the server would be setup within 24hrs. After 2 days i sent them an email asking if it was setup yet.. 24hrs later i got a reply that there defcon 1 server was out of stock and it would be ready in a few days... As the days went by i sent numerous emails with no reply, then i got suspicious!.

On the 10th May 2008 i put in a dispute with paypal to ask for a refund.. a few hours later i got a reply that i already had the goods and it was a digital sale and i was trying to scam them!

Today (11th May 2008) i called paypal to discuss my options. They agreed they would email defconhost and ask them to resend the 'so called info' i was supposed to have recived for the server setup but then told me that the chances of a refund were slim because there is no proof that i didnt get the 'digital goods'.

Im now awaiting a reply from defconhost but i know my chances are slim.

If i dont get a refund, i will have one more option:

Im lucky because my father is high up in the police force in the UK and they have good ties with Hong Kong and USA and he will help clear this situation up just on moral grounds (nothing to do with the money) but its not the point.. i was just plain stupid to purchase a product thats seems to good to be true.

I have all the emails and records of phone calls (answerphone).

I Just hope this post helps someone else!

Ill keep you posted on the progress of my actions towards defCONhost.

ThePlanet / Other Hosting Providers - Unethical Practices

Nov 11, 2008

I am posting here my experience with Theplanet and also looking to gain insights into unethical practices by hosting providers who are turning into practices of utility and credicard companies. I have been a loyal customer of Serverbeach for 4 years, I have been a loyal customer of Theplanet for more than a year .. I outsource my server administration to admins who setup , configure and manage my servers. Recently Theplanet disconnected our server as our credit card on file expired which I beleive is the right thing to do .. What ticks me off is the fact that they are charging a reconnect fee - FOR WHAT - to click a button? Just Ridiculous. THese dedicated companies are following the path of utility companies and credit card companies which slap various fees on their customers and milking customers .. sure a reconnect fee is understood if the account is not in good standing and such incidents are common on the account . What surprises me is this is the first time in 1+ year and they refuse to waive the fee , it is not the question of fee but the ethics and practices is what I am concerned about. NOw a reconnect fee , what next ? a server restart fee ? which direction are these hosting companies moving towards?

Well I explained the situation and that email is not always the best communication a phone call could have helped. Who would not agree that that single email might have stuck in a junk folder? THey had my full contact information if only they are genuine , they would call and understand what is the issue , have at risk management practices in place so their sales rep could contact me right after 3 days of non payment. But NO they rather wanted me to contact them as they take it for granted that I have been their customer for more than a year and It is not easy for me to move out to a different provider I would not have any option but to pay considering the time and effort involved in migrating to other hosting provider.

ThePlanet - Sorry but on the ethics issue I would not mind spending 100 x the reconnect fee to move to other provider who understands customers.

I am reaching out to all the individuals who sign up with these companies and respond to this post any such experiences.. HIdden fees charged by these companies ? Have you noticed how credit card companies change their billing cycles and you received the bill only to know you missed the payment due date .. ..

That said please let me know which is the best dedicated server company which I can sign up with which does not enforce hidden fees such as these and is ethical and understands and listens to customers.
