I REALLY REALLY need to connect to my FTP on 1and1 and for some reason it seems to be down. Is anyone else having this problem?

1and1 Won't Host A Domain Name Without Extra Charge?
I was looking for a domain name and registered it with 1and1 last year, for UK 11 pounds approximately. I then found that they were also charging me approx 30 UK pounds every six months for web hosting space that I did not ask for as I have a great host elsewhere. I have gone to their site and tried to cancel the web hosting while retaining the domain name but it only allows me to cancel the domain name, which I don't want to do. I have tried contacting them multiple times over this additional charge and get stonewalled every time with a standard response that the money is due on my contract. In the circumstances I would like to transfer the domain name to another host as renewal is a couple of months away, but I'm scared that they'll find some way to stop me doing that? ....

1and1 Dedicated Server Review And Some Shared Hosting Ramblings (couldn't Resist)
http://1and1.com I've had a couple dedicated servers with 1and1 for a while now(about 6mos). I have to say that my overall experience was pretty good. At the time the prices where pretty good, and are very comparable to most hosts. I received the speeds promised, the server was setup very quickly. The only negative I had with the server was the kernel. I attempted to install vmware on they system however they did not have the headers needed by GCC to compile vmware. It was an annoyance, but I just opted to update the kernel since there where a few releases since their custom built kernel was made. Once I was running the new kernel the vmware process went smoothly, and everything worked perfectly. As for 1and1's support team, I have to say their standard support I would not rate a 10/10, however their dedicated server support team, and one particular rep I've come to know in their sales / abuse department (more on the abuse dpt. later) are very knowledgeable. And always addressed any issues or questions promptly. Which honestly no issues besides vmware stand out in my mind, which was just a minor inconvenience, which you would find on most hosts. Since its an un-managed root server your responsible for keeping the system up to date, and run the latest kernels anyway right? Ok, so I mentioned I came to know a rep out of the abuse department of sales. Now this isn't particularly related to my dedicated servers but I did have one of their hosting packages. Well I never kept tabs on the site and the scripts had a couple vulnerabilities, php5 wasn't enforced. Anyway to make a long story short, the site was hacked and fake bank sites and other scripts where loaded onto the server. Which is where The abuse department came into play. Now I know (getting off topic, but it may be the same with a dedicated server) hosting companies don't want to run sites like these, and I thought that the way these companies usualy handle these types of situations are to send a take-down notice to their client, as its possible they may not even know its there. But 1and1 opted to completely disable all access to the server, http, ftp, ssh, everything. So at first I didn't know what happend. I call up tech support that night(prob around midnight -- 24/7 tech support is always great), they let me know the account was dissabled do to an abused related complaint. They told me I would have to wait until morning when their sales department opens(as abuse is located in sales). So I call up the number they gave me the next morning. And meet Bob (I'm calling him bob because his name escapes me at the moment). He was very pleasant and understanding that I needed my site up as soon as possible. He looked at my account he saw I had been with them for about a year and a half, and said he didn't think I had posted any of the content anyway(he disabled it himself imagine that haha). He emailed me links to all the files in question, informed me that php5 was not forced and recomed I fix it. Since that was the only reason we had this isue in the first place. He was also able to tell me what files the hacker used to exploit and gain access to the server, as well as searched the the user directory for any backdoor scripts. Which he did find some and sent me the locations in the email. So, finally we got of the phone he re-enabled the server. I went through the email went through everything, I just opted to delete everything as i felt the whole system was compromised anyway, and re-upload the site. I forced php5 for all php scripts and never heard anything about it again... and the site still runs today! Their normal tech support isn't all the great, at least not when it comes to apache. I inquired about mod_rewrite not working and the first rep i spoke to didn't know what i was talking about, I explained in more detail, she put me on hold for about 10-20mins and researched it. Said she found details about my issue and shot me an email. I checked the email, it contained how to moddify headers using MS ASP which has nothing to even do with my "LINUX" shared hosting plan. I called in a second time frustrated, remember I usually talk to guys from their dedicated server support. When I spoke with the second rep. The first thing I asked Him was if he was familiar with "Apache Mod_Rewrite" (exact words) are you familiar with this, and if not can you please give me to someone that is. He assured me he knew what I was talking about, I explained the situation, and what the other rep sent me was completely off topic. He apologized and assured me he knows exactly what I'm talking about. He sent me an email with another link to their FAQ yet again. However this time is was on creating 403 redirects in apache. Well I do admit at least they got closer this time right? I laughed and walked out of the room. Took a shower and relaxed. Finally, I decided I'd take one last look at .htaccess configs before trying another call. I played around with different setting and... eureka! I found the solution; for some reason mod rewrite on 1and1's shared hosting servers doesn't support sub-directories; that is you need to access the files in your root directory to successfully process a rewrite. So whats the moral of the story? Call Dedicated Server Support! lol So anyway since this is a dedicated server review. So for my Dedicated server experience I would rate it a "9 out of 10". For my overall experience with 1and1, I would rate it an "8 out of 10". Not the best I ever had, but I would do business with them. There are other minor issues I've had with their shared hosting, but I don't feel like getting into them. Anyway hope that helps sombody, I kno it was a long post... so for the people that read it all congrats, because I lost concentration over about 80% of that post lol Little humor there.. anyway thanks for read'n the post... just my little contribution to WHT.

Problem Loggin' In With FTP After APF Installed
I installed APF on a VPS and everything works fine. I can access WHM, cPanel, SSH, send mail etc. except for FTP which has suddenly stopped working. I have double checked and port 21 is correctly set all places in conf.apf. Does anybody here know what might be the reason I suddenly can't log in to the account using my FTP client. Neither with the account password or the root password. Any help is gratefully received.

Invalid Command 'php_flag' - After Recompiling PHP & Apache?
After I recompiled Apache and PHP using easyapache from cPanel, we started getting all these weird errors. I'm getting a few people now complaining about not being able to enable register_globals. I believe (after searching) that having this enabled is a big security risk and shouldn't need to be used. However, some people apparently where using .haccess and php_flag to enable this. I did find on a few places that people can create their own php.ini file to emulate what was previously done with .htaccess? After searching around.. I found out that Register Globals can become a security risk based on the scripts configuration that uses it. This feature normally can be enabled via .htaccess using the glad "php_flag register_globals On". Creating a file called php.ini inside the directory of the site with the flag "register_globals=on" I believe will also enable this option. To enable this option on a global scale, you can edit '/usr/local/cpanel/3rdparty/etc/php.ini', but its not recommended. However.. We are unable to get the php.ini concept to work. Is there something I need to do to enable/allow users to do this for their account?

I'd go w/ a hosted service, but I open allot of pop3 connections... (program I use downloads one email, closes connection, reopens... repeat)... There's lots of cookbooks out there, but they require quite a bit more time commitment (and configurability) than I want / need. Is there any dumbified installs available? I tried with webmin, but even that wants me to manually configure a postfix / imap server bridge.=

Qmail - I'm Afraid I Wasn't Able To Deliver Your Message
Basically a client has been getting really bad email problems with their email. They keep getting the standard qmail msg back from several emails. I originally thought this msg was being returned as it was an invalid receipients address, but they are assuring me that this is not the case? Anyway the basic msg they are getting is: Hi. BoxVPS = Useless | STAY AWAY From This 'company'

Also had to create a support ticket. And when it was finally delivered, there was no DirectAdmin on it. Specially disturbing, since I actually paid for a monthly license. Not to mention that their responses are very vague. They claim to apply the promotions (triple disk space, double bandwidth) 24 hours after they setup the VPS. I have no idea why they do that. Moreover, they have false advertising on their VPS page (Instant Activation..where it should read 'We don't activate your VPS unless you create a support ticket). A speedtest from the VPS showed that the VPS is capable of bursting to a maximum of 10mbps, while average speed is barely 2mbps. Stay away from these guys. They're potential scammers. They WILL scam.. sooner or later.

I am finishing up on my clients site and the ecommerce software we use has an option for search engine friendly URL's but your server must support $_SERVER['PATH_INFO'] . My client is hosted by GoDaddy and my host (HostGator) does not support it unless you go dedicated. What Is The Reverse Command For 'mount --bind'
A few days ago, when installing TUX, I have mounted the virtual hosting directory to var/www/html/mywebsite.com (that's an empty directory I created in order for TUX to work) via: mount --bind /home/virtual/site1/fst/var/www/html/ /var/www/html/mywebsite.com/ command..... After figuring out that TUX has some problems I reverted everything but not this mount --bind command.. Ftp To Ftp Transfer Program
I have a old server and a new server.... the old server's hard drive is maxed so when i tried to use cpanel transfer account thing it worked, but obviously alot of things were missing so now i need to transfer the rest of the data that is in his home account my old server account ends at midnight tonight so I cant try to download stuff to here because my internet is about the speed of good dial up so i need something that will transfer from one ftp account directly to another so my bandwidth isnt a factor to me this is a technical issue ; ) im just a server hobbyist so I don't know much about linux commands to make this happen if this is possible to do on the command line easiest way would be a windows based ftp to ftp program, and the one I have claims to do that but it wont work

1and1 Getting Better
1and1 has always getting a lot of fudge here on WHT and a lot of times they deserve it. In the past their support has totally sucked. However, I have noticed lately that their support is actually improving A LOT!! I've been getting responses within a few hours and that is really good considering it would take days before. Also, in the past their responses were just generic and non-helpful but lately they have actually provided personal help and attention and fixed all the issues I've had. I know this should be expected from a registrar/webhost but I have to say I'm quite impressed. They are after all a really budget company. Btw, I use them for all my domain registrations and also have a small hosting package with them for my static small sites. I'm not brave enough to put my more busy sites there yet.

Cant Connect To IIS
is to use windows authentication, to connect to the site, and connect to MS SQL with the same user. I read on the net (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms998358.aspx), and it said I should go to my default sites properties, to to the "directory security" tab, and make sure "Integrated Windows authentication" is the only box that is checked. I did that and now I cant connect to my site... When I try to connect, it bring up a windows user name and password box. I put a user name and password in, but nothing... Can't Connect To CPanel
I can't connect to CPanel or any of my sites but I can connect to my virtuozzo control panel. When I try to connect to CPanel or any of my sites I get an error that says that the server is taking to long to respond. If I go through a proxy I see the sites so I know CPanel is not down. Clients Can't Connect To IP
We're having a small problem with one of our Ventrilo boxes (Linux) that seems to be blocking users from connecting. The DC (The Planet) is reporting that the issue is likely with the user and my tech is also saying the same thing. Connect Two Servers
I'm trying to cross connect two linux servers' secondary NICs with a cross over cable. after I pluged in the both ends, I tried to set internal ips for eth1 with netconfig, 192.168.3.1 and the other one is 192.168.3.2, i don't know what to put on netmask and gateway so I left it with netconfig's default, after that I tried ifup ifcfg-eth1 but the server lost connection. The tech at the datacenter checked and said I delete their network gateway from the list of routes. what should I do? remove the gateway line in ifcfg-eth1?

Changing From 1and1
I have been with this hosting company for almost five years now and until today the service has been excellent. I am having massive ftp issues. I have 41 different domains that I run for a variety of projects. Needless to say I keep each website in a different folder. I just tried to switch one of my blogs from blogger to wordpress. Blogger won't let me have my domain back and keeps blocking it with a 404 error. But that is a separate issue. I tried using one of my extra domains and pointing it at my new blog folder. But it keeps bouncing back to my root directory. I contacted 1and1 and they reset the server, but now they are blaming me for the issue. I can access the blog through it's subdirectory but I can't post the blog there. Anyways, I am not ready to move over all of my websites, but I do want to move my blog to a new host. I am mainly hoping that I can escape 1and1 and blogger in one move if I change the host of this one website. It's funny I have been happy for years and recommended them to friends, but now I am very disappointed. Can someone recomend a reliable host? I am looking for one with a cheap lowend package to start off. If I end up staying I will need a lot of bandwidth as I have a podcast that had a lot of traffic. Basically, there are so many companies that I just can't tell which ones are reliable. That's my main concern. Also I use SQL a lot. Thanks!

I have about 5 domains that I require hosting for, and another few which will be aliases to these domains. I had a look at fasthosts.co.uk and would need a separate hosting package for each domain. I then looked at 1and1's virtual private servers. These hopefully fit the bill as it is quite cheap at £15/pm. http://order.1and1.co.uk/xml/order/VpsRoot I was wondering if this fits my needs. Would I be able to host several websites here? Or just one domain? Also, they say that I have root access, will I be able to do just about anything on there then? E.g. install imagemagick, edit php.ini, enable wildcard DNS and use mod_rewrite for subdomains... etc. Given that I have root access to the VPS, how can it be that they say the max number of email accounts is 150, what else is restricted? I'm a bit confused as to what sort of abilities a VPS will give me. 1and1's site doesn't explain what I could use it for as well as I would like.

Anyone Use Lunarpages Or 1and1?
I am trying to launch a website for a youth group. Since this is a non-profit organization I am trying to host the site for a reasonable price but I am not sure which company to go with. I have looked at lunarpages and 1&1. There are so many out there I am not sure which one to chose.Has anyone dealt with these companies and if so how are they?

Not interested in reseller plans or any of that - strictly as a site for domain purchase and personal site hosting. I have them and am becoming very unsatisfied and looking for alternatives.

1and1 Review!
I bought a 1and1 VPS. It was a good quality server, I don't think it was setup right. I called their tech support multiple times about my servers issues. Such as it freezing and i can't restart it. Then the tech support said he would tell their computer department, and 13 hours later, my server is still frozen and I cannot log on. I would not and do not recommend 1and1 to anyone. It was a very bad exerience and I will always stay away from them. Sorry 1and1 but your service isn't all that great.

1and1 Vs. Liquidweb And Others
I have about 30 websites under my belt right now with ixwebhosting.com. I have 1 account but nearly 30 sites linked to that account - yes yes, means it is VERY slow because a) it's on a shared server, and b) there are literally thousands of sites on my server (did a reverse Ip lookup) I've just recently started a new forum which has taken off, to the point where the database cannot be pulled up half the time because soo many people are on the server. This is NOT good. I'm missing out on revenue that could be gained, and since I'm advertising/marketing this site, it sucks even more! So my question is - I'm goin to move all of my websites to a dedicated server. I thought about a VPS, but for $30 more monthly I can have a dedicated with a gig of memory, yadda yadda yadda... Should I use 1and1.com? They are $99.99/monthly, or should I use someone else? Who else can compete at that price? I get everything I need with 1and1, including enough hard drive space, enough ram (for now), control panel, etc... I'm a n00b in the dedicated server world, so help would be great. I plan to purchase a dedicated server within the next few days, and so far 1and1 has been my best bet when it comes down to money.

1and1 Not Billing Me
For some odd reason 1and1 hasn't billed me yet and it's been beyond the 10 days it usually takes after the invoice. I currently have my billing option set to automatically get billed through Paypal. I emailed them a few times and never got a response. Is anyone else having this problem? I don't want my services to get shut down because they can't bill me.

1AND1 Party!
I guess they have a system in place so that they will automatically be directed calls if the "rep" is not busy and my call got directed to a desk with no operator and I heard them having a party in the background. How completely professional! Also, their telephone system is completely broken and you'll always get a pissed off sales rep in the middle of the day because they will automatically be directed calls because their hold system is broken.

need a couple of exchange accounts 1&1 charges $6.99 per account and rackspace $14.99 per account also with rackspace you have to have atleast 5 accounts i guess i need a 2nd opinion here which one would you go with and why also how secure is rackspace's exchange against hackers and if you have exchange only hosting what happens with the actual site?? like when someone types it in their browser
