BirdHosting - Worth My Time To Write A Review

BirdHosting - worth my time to write a review

I just completed my latest site launch with BirdHosting.com and I have to say Mike knows how to operate this hosting company. I've been with ourinternet.us (spare me ever again---please), HostMySite, and GoDaddy. Godaddy was my latest host until I moved it over to Bird. Godaddy didn't give me much flexibility with their VPS windows hosting plans. I needed more then 10 gigs on a windows host.

A buddy of mine referred me to Mike from BirdHosting and Mike had me up and going before I even gave him a credit card. He really wanted to impress and meet all my needs. I now have a 50 gig / 1gig windows vps for a super great monthly price. I enjoy the personal attention I get when something goes wrong.

BirdHosting also helped me pick out two servers for where I work at too. Mike spent over 45 minutes on the phone with me answering questions I had. Godaddy would NEVER do that.

Anyways - I'm enjoying super FAST up time since going over to the birds nest. worth a look at if you are considering hosting companies.

BirdHosting - 3 Day Review

Dec 18, 2008

BirdHosting - 3 day review

I've been looking around for a reasonably priced VPS plan for the past few days, and my search has ended with me choosing BirdHosting. I'll break my review down into a few sections.Reliability

So far, my VPS has been up the whole time. I haven't been monitoring it with a service and all, but i haven't noticed any. Of course, it has only been 3 days, but no complaints so far.Speed

The node i've been put on has 8 cores, and boy, it flies! It feels like i have the whole server to myself, but Michael has told me there is others on there.Support

I have to be honest here. Support has been one of their weaker areas. While they are knowledgeable, i think (only received help through Michael) it is a one-man team. I ordered an unmanaged service, but hey are happy to help out whereever possible.Pricing
Prices are reasonable. For what i have received, i'm very happy.Other
For an older host, they sure are quiet. They have apparently been around since 2005, hosting locals, and branched out later.

I've sent the details in using the report function to make it legit.

1 Month And A Half Review Of Birdhosting

Nov 4, 2007

a month and a half ago i was in the market for a VPS that would suite my private hosting company /design firm. After getting Pm's from many of the hosters , I was not impressed with the way they would not negotiate. i didn't need 40 gb space but still wanted 200 gb bandwidth. Thats when i came across birdhosting! It even turned out that the owner was at webhostingtalk as well! I pmed and we discussed the plan that i needed. he negotiated and i had gotten what i wanted . He also gave me his contact info so i could speedily contact him through an instant messenger. I had come across very minor problems but that was because i was a noob with plesk. I wanted to know how i could create reseller accounts and log in through shell. Through minutes i had them answered(They were veryy noobie but still). with the specs i had , It was the fastest Vps i had seen . (My specs were:

10 gb space
128 mb ram with 256 burst
200gb b/w

Netriver Review - First Time In WHT

Jun 2, 2008

I was struggling looking for a good datacenter who can provide me good bandwith arround Australia - Asia, Then i asked in Colo Forum..
Hung , from 3inetwork told me, Netriver has a good package colocation, so he sent me Netriver Sales email address via PM.

I sent an email to Adam Viera from Netriver describing what i needed. Surprisingly, he gave me such a good price for 2000 G Premium bandwith, Cpanel + Fantastico Installed (195 dollars).

Then i was about to buy hardware from Apaqdigital.com, Chong, thesalesman sent me an invoice and unfortunately he couldn't process the CC unless i sent him the scan of my cc both sides, passport and driving license (I'm from Australia), which i did, and after that he sent me another email saying that he cant process 3rd party credit card, and he didn't believe me i own the credit card. I was thinkin how the **** does he know, and why he bothered to ask me to send my cc details and everything. even though i sent everything he asked. Bugg**!

I was desperate, then i emailed Adam from Netriver, and asked him where he usually get the server from, and i explained to him Chong blowed me off and it means my Site will be down in about 3 days. He replied back to me ask me what i needed and he can buy for me through SiliconMechanics. I was so happy.

Last Saturday the server arrived, Adam from Netriver emailed me saying that my server was already there and the Tech Support wiring it for me, Jed From Netriver helped me to install Cpanel and Fantastico Until 11 o'clock at night, and before he left; he said "Email me if you have any Issue" OMG... im very happy with the support....

and Now my site running perfect and smoothly

i give them 9/10

it will be 10/10 if they can provide live chat support!

Go Netriver!

Save Your Time Go With WiredTree ** +review

Feb 6, 2009

I switched from Resellerzoom to wiredtree with a vps. I also have accounts with liquidweb and softlayer. All are reliable and uptimenot an issue but as far as getting help Wiredtree is just far above.

I have been there now only a few months but so far so good. If your not a real tech person wiredtree is your best bet. ANd the email response time wow!! I tried to call them once but by time I picked up the phone and waiting on hold for about 2 minutes my email was already responded to.

I am sure there are thousands of good host out there but I know on this boards when i looked no one would tell me whichto go with , they all said it depends on this and that. What I am saying is if your looking for a good VPS and your not a technical person go with Wiredtree save yourself the headache I had with others that are great host but just not ready to deal with us stupid people who dont know how to "harden" a server .

VPS Providers! What's Your Take On "write Back" & "write Through"

Oct 9, 2009

I recently worked on an issue involving a severe performance issue between "write back" and "write through" caching on the RAID/HD.

Long story short, we purchased 12 IBM x3550 M2s came with LSI SAS1068E/SR-BR10i (gimp redheaded stepchild of the MR series. No BBU, no onboard DIMM.) RAID controller and had very bad and inconsistent write throughput with it. Sometimes it writes out 300-400MB/s (dd test, I know... don't flame. I know dd is NOT a good test.), somethings as low as 30MB/s. The server is configured with 2.5" SATA 500GB on HW RAID-1.

From dmesg log it was default to "write through" on sda. I figured out via lsiutil, you can set the drives to "write back". Once we did that, the write performance is more consistent. NOTE, this enables write back on the SATA drives, NOT the controller itself.

I loop out lspci on all our VPS servers. Found out those with LSI (SAS 8344ELP) cards have sda set to "write through w/ FUA". Those are already all RAID-10s, and I have not heard a single complaint from any customer stating poor I/O performance.

I believe the 8344ELP do have a BBU, I can double-check with DC. The DC is on UPS as well. So that rules out the shortcomings of enabling write back caching.

I want to ask those of you using Xen (3.3 & 3.4). Do you guys have better I/O performance with "write back" or "write through" caching? I'm actually looking for real world results. Where you guys actually deployed production VPS server with clients on it.

Squirrelmail: Email Arrives With Different Time Than Server Time

Nov 11, 2008

This is a rare issue i have on a RHEL 5.2 + cPanel server.

Server time is:

Tue Nov 11 17:02:51 CST 2008
Squirrelmail time show:
Code:
Last Refresh:
Tue, 5:02 pm

So, that is correct too..

But email arrives with -4 hours time, example:

webmaster@xxx.com 1:03 pm testing email

I already rebooted httpd, exim, and imap server, and the server itself too.. and problem stills.

Server Response Time :: Network Time Out

Sep 25, 2008

I can't get access to a certain site. I always get the page with:

network time out - server at *** takes to long to respons. More people have noticed this and apparently it only happens to people with certain specific providers. And not all the time. Some times they DO get access eventy to they belong to the same ISP. So I guess an ISP isn't blocking access to it otherwise it would be permenantly/The site administrator insists that certain ISP's are blocking his site. He's hosting it on his own server. The domain belongs is registered at namecheap.com.

If an ISP is blocking this site (if that's possible?), that would lead to that 'network timeout' page wouldn't it?

What is the most likely reason for getting a timeout page anyway?

Rackspace Worth The $$?

Rackspace worth the $$?

The name, service and reputation is excellent but their prices seem to be much higher than similar services at other reputable providers.

The client looking at rackspace MUST have a reliable server, backups and security. These are not optional.

Is rackspace worth the extra dollars? Buying peace of mind or buying the name?

What's Bandwidth Worth?

Oct 23, 2008

So I run a small music forum site. We used to have the ability for our users to download music track sets. We had over 100 files that are generally around 80MB and the users could add more so our space requirements would increase over time.

We initially set this up with dreamhost.com (unlimited bandwidth/space) but they eventually asked us to stop using the space as a data repository and wanted to charge $1 per GB transferred (which at that time was about $100-120/month).

The Problem:

This is something our users want and would probably pay for. I'm sort of asking for advice on how to approach this problem. Need to figure out how we could set this up and what to charge the users for downloading the music files (price per file, monthly plans, etc). Considering we want to keep it cheap enough that users will pay and the hosting costs would probably rise with the demand and exposure of the program. What sort of hosts should I be looking for?

Worth Getting Reseller

Jun 9, 2008

I'm currently designing a website for a friend of mine for her new photography business.

And she does not know anything about the web, basically I am setting her up with hosting, domain, everything.... I've done this for about 3 people so far.

My question is, Is it worth it for me to buy a small reseller hosting plan, and have her pay me about $5-7 /mo, and since I will be handling everything, I get the support from my host and have her basically pay for my reseller hosting which I may end up with more clients from more web design? or just stick with the traditional recommending her to a company... Is there such thing as me making a few bucks from giving someone else business?

Cheap RAM, Is It Worth It

Dec 27, 2007

RAM price is so low nowadays that one could buy 8 GB of cheap ram for 300$ (4x2GB) to build a server. I have a server with 2x1GB cheap ram that has been running for 18 months without any issue.

My bet is that ECC ram is not worth it when you can buy normal ram for such low prices.

How many of you would run a server with 8GB of cheap ram?

Is Colo Worth It

Dec 31, 2007

I am planning on doing some media streaming (youtube style)

I am debating whether to colo my dual opteron (1u) - I am looking for 100mpbs port unmetered with some quality mixed bandwidth. How much will that run me for? does it make more sense to rent a dedicated server?

How about all those extras I hear about, like managed switches and power consumption..is that big issue?

Could somebody give me a quick quote as to how much colocating a 1u rack with 100mpbs premium b/w will cost? and then how much going the dedicated server route would compare

note: I need something that will get good speeds to asia. I anticipate 15 percent of visitors to be from Asia.

100% Uptime - What's It Worth To You

Aug 16, 2007

As I've mentioned in other threads, I work in the hosting industry at the support end of things. I can't go more than 10 minutes into my shift each day without seeing a ticket where someone is complaining about or contesting the "99% uptime guarantee". One day a couple weeks ago, I had someone complaining about an Alertra report with 98.7% uptime, and how it was unsatisfactory for their site to be down for 10 minutes every month. What's more, it was just a stupid World of Warcraft forum that probably saw 5 visitors per day.

My co-workers and I have been debating this, though. What worth is there in 99% uptime? Is it something that can be achieved? If so, would people pay more for it? Would it be able to be marketed to the shared hosting community? Would people be willing to pay more for 100% uptime? Would the same answers apply?

I've read a couple of reviews on similar forums and blogs trying to figure out which hosts are worth their buck. The main points of discussion were:

- Price
- Reliability (up/downtime)
- Support

Most of the providers were either too expensive, or lack proper support.

The most discussed company was Hostgator. I don't understand the hype but maybe you guys can help me out here.

Less Resources And Cheap VPS. Does It Worth For You

Nov 2, 2009

I have seen some requests for cheap Virtual Private Servers. By saying "cheap" I mean under $20/month... However the those who posted the requests meant under $10/month...

I don't think that a virtual machine or container would cost $10 or less, but I've seen some providers to offer virtual servers with a very small amount of resources - a couple gigs of space, not to much bandwidth and 64 MB or 128 MB RAM - and to price them around 10 bucks per month.

Although I'd never go this way I'm curious to read what do you thin about such a marketing policy. Do you think that offering a VPS which can not even have a control panel because it doesn't have enough resources is a good practice? (I realize that there are different scenarios and some people probably don't need hosting automation software, but at the same time need a low cost virtual machine...)
