about a server of mine that went down recently. Its a RAID10- 8hdd setup and there seems to be a hdd that died (at least according to host) and the OS is not loading. I am a newbie to servers and am curious if data will be lost (which I hope not) and what procedures are taken in the event a drive fails in a RAID setup.
A couple more specific questions, based on notes from DC
- What if fsck is being run on the failed RAID drive?
- What happened if the OS doesnt load from raid10 (8 drives) anymore?
- One partition only showed up as 3mb large when knopix was run
I am still waiting from the support at the DC (been 4 days wait), so just wanted to get some insight from others who might have went thru a similar situation.

I am in the UK looking for web hosting (possible a vps) with at least 6GB storage. I am confused why there is such a difference in price between companies offers.
E.g Kuala and Supanames are about £420 per year for a basic vps.
If i go to the EUKhost.com website they offer a vps for £240.
Is it because the first 2 companies offer a better service or are they just expensive, or are they set at a normal price and the EUKhost is cheap because it is not very good?
Any advice gratefully received.
Also if anyone has had any experience with any of these companies please share it.
Or if you know if a reasonably priced VPS - where you KNOW the service is good please tell me about it.

My domain registrar does not have the facility to create nameservers which means I can't create my own DNS for my websites.
I wanted to create ns1.smsmasters.co.uk and ns2.smsmasters.co.uk as my DNS.
Does 123-reg allow you to setup your own nameservers and assign an ip?
I'm really confused as to what to do. In the past I used my host's DNS.

I have two servers with SL- both running Windows with two NICs for Private and Public Interfaces.
What I want to do is keep the first server Internal only, so basically, just disable the Public Network interface in Windows. On this Server, I want to create a VM that can network with the server as well as the second server and any VMs on that second server.
The second server will have both the Public and Private Interfaces enabled. On this server, I will have two VMs and both of these VMs should be able to access both the host PCs, each other, as well as the VM on the first server. Additionally,t These two VMs should also be able to access the Internet.
What would be the best way of going about this configuration.
Right now, I've just started and on the first server, created a VM using a bridged connection to the Private Network. I've give the VM an IP address in the same range as the host PC that is part of the block that SL has reserved for me. However, I cannot ping the host PC from the VM and vice versa. Firewall is disabled on the VM at the moment so I know that is not the issue.

I am looking for better disk performance. Due to the tight budget, I have to choose one of following options as my disk choice:
2 SATAII disk w/RAID0, 7200rpm, 32M cache for each disk
1 SAS disk, 15000rpm, 16M cache.
which one will be better and how better if other things(hardware & OS) are same?
