7200 Rpm HDD Vs. 10k Rpm HDD Performance
How much faster is a 10k rpm HDD vs a 7200 rpm HDD in a server environment?
IMO, a 7200 rpm HDD is much faster than 5400 rpm HDD when it comes down to desktop PCs..
Just wondering if it's worth upgrading to a 10k rpm HDD from a 7200 rpm HDD and losing about 1TB of storage as well...
(Comparing specifically 2 750GB 16mb cache 7200rpm SATA 2 HDD RAID 1 with 2 150GB 16mb cache 10krpm HDD in RAID 1)

Rpm Erased
In a strange scenario one remote server is having issue itself with the rpm package. It seems that it got damaged and as the rpm itself is corrupted , it can not fix itself. The box is very critical and it can not be reinstalled as it is in remote DC. Is there any way to fix this without a reinstallation? System is RHEL 3 Update 6.

Roundcube Mail RPM Install
I'm just setting up my first server and first time dealing with whm/cpanel and wondering if someone could help me out. I'm trying to install Roundcube mail for all clients on the server (quite a few have requested it). Now i'm running Fedora 7 and its got a Roundcubemail RPM listed. So through WHM I chose to install that RPM and it went through the process and said done etc. Thing is its not showing up on the list of webmail clients when clients click on webmail section in Cpanel. Oh yeah its WHM/CPanel Version 11 Any ideas what i've missed. I looked online for install instructions but they really only appear to be for singular accounts etc not server wide

15K Rpm SAS Disks Greater Than 146 GB
Currently we're using HP servers with 4 hot-swap bays that hold 3.5" Seagate Cheetah 15K RPM SAS disks, which we can get in 300, 450, and 600 GB flavors. I'm looking at the HP DL380/385 models which use 2.5" SAS disks. About the only decent 15K RPM SAS disk I've found in 2.5" form is the Seagate Savvio, but it doesn't come any larger than 146 GB. Anyone know of another enterprise-class SAS disk that has all of the following attributes: 2.5", 15K RPM, SAS, and at least 300 GB? (Please, no 10K RPM or SATA recommendations like the WD Velociraptor. I won't consider anything that's not 15K RPM SAS.)

Mounting A HDD

Now i dont want to just type fdisk dev/hdb incase that is my first 40gb hdd, i dont mind losing the extra data on it i just dont want to format the OS and stuff was im on an un-managed server and will cost me time / money for them to re-install it all.. is there a ssh command to list all the hdd's connected to the server and to tell me what size they are, and where they are on the server before i start formatting, fdisking and mounting them?

HDD Prices Online
Today I wanted to configure server for colocation and I went to both HP and DELL, and everything was ok until I started to configure HDDs. Price of regular 1Tb HDD is about $500 on both DELL and HP, while same drive costs $84 on newegg. Whats the catch? I mean processor, RAM, and everything else has normal prices, but HDDs are 6X more expensive than normal price. Do you know any good site where I can configure server and order it to colocation address. Also it must be very cheap ? Best would be if I could order components from new egg, send them to company which assembles everything and then send it to DC.

Server Question About HDD Mirroring
Well I am looking to learn to manage a server (so I won't need to hire others to do what I can do). However I have some basic questions. 1) So lets say you have a server with two identical HDD's and raid 1?? or a SATA controller so that the second HDD is just a mirror of the first HDD when/if the first HDD dies does the SATA controller or RAID card see that the first HDD died and switch to the second HDD so the site that is hosted on the server stays online?? I am thinking yes as that would seem to be the point of having a raid or sata controller and setup ?? Part twoto the question is is their software that you need to install that will make the server email you when/if a HDD dies (so you can do pull the dead one out and replace it with a new one). Or is it just that you would watch some type of server log(s) to stay ontop of if the server is running all good?? Second is how common (these days) is it for a server that would be new and brand name have a HDD die or have some other hardware failure?

HDD Setup (not Raid Related)
I have a question regarding, hard drives and performance etc... I only use it for forums and currently is only one site (hopefully couple more in no time) Currently I have 2x36gb SAS in raid 1 obviously containing everything including dbs and /home. and a third 250gb drive for backups only ^^ Ronny did an excelent job setting this up. Any ways, my problem is that I wan't to allow some attachments on my forums, and this would take a significant ammount of space over 1gb no problem and then keep increasing (that's gonna sux for bandwidth). I know it will fit in the SAS drives no problems, dbs are rather small at the time (2.5gb in total) but logs are quite big 5-10gbs in total. I thought it might be a good idea to purchase another drive. This 4th drive would be 750 and backups would move there , and use the 250 for the /home directory. This would give a lot of room for uploads, and backups accordingly and keep the fast ones for OS and dbs I was told, however, and understandebly, that a lot of performance would be lost by moving /home to a SATA drive I know SATAS are no way as fast, but then vbulletin can't upload attach files to a folder outside its hirachy (without complicated modifications). (Note: i didn't specify my resons for wanting such set up) So I'm in a bit of a pickle. Having the bigger drive would allow me to have the attachments, and should eventually result on more traffic etc to my site. /home currently is only 150mbs big... but then performance is also an issue pitty i couldn't afford the bigger drices at the time [sees the point of renting over buydowns now] is there a way that /var/log/httpd saves those massive logs on another drive? it would free up 5-10gbs in shortIs moving /home to a SATA drive from Raid 1 SAS a bad idea? (considering space and purpose) Could httpd logs or /var/log in general be moved to the backup/another drive?

Secure Delete Data On HDD
we've just moved to a new server and was wondering if there was any programs to secure erase all data on the hard drive on the old server (with centOS), as we don't want anyone else who get this harddrive to be able to recover any data. I'm not that familiar with the file systems used by linux, so perhaps this isn't a problem. Just had to ask. We use some DoD "approved" applications to remove sensitive data on NTFS partitions on our stationary computers, but couldn't find anything for *nix.

How Do I Install With RPM To Install Dependencies Also
to installing linux software and have been beating my head for a couple of days. I just learned that I can use something on my CENTOS 5 - which is the same as RHEL 5 - to install the rpm and all dependencies. Numeric-24.2-1.i586.rpm is the rpm I want to install, if that matters. How can I do install it AND any dependencies?

Use 2nd HDD For Software RAID Or MySQL
Use 2nd HDD for Software RAID or MySQL? I'm considering a dedicated server with an Intel P4 2.4Ghz processor and 2x160gb HDD. [url] I intend to do a fair amount of database queries so I was wondering whether it would be better to use the second harddisk for a software RAID-1 (assuming the processor and bus is up to it!) or for something else like storing the MySQL databases leaving the first harddisk free for the OS/files. how best to use the second harddisk? Does anyone happen to know roughly what the overhead of software RAID-1 is on a P4 2.4Ghz processor? For example if I'm doing a basic query on an indexed table of 3 million records, roughly every second, each query returning a dataset of 30 records? Incidentally PHP would be doing basic list comparisons and then occasionally doing a single insert statement adding from 1 to 30 new records, so PHP will use a little processor/memory also. Running the same queries on my old laptop (A Pentium M 1.7Ghz using a 4200rpm HDD) takes a fraction of a second, about 0.25 seconds if I remember correctly, so it's fairly well optimized. Although slightly outside my budget, how much better would a Athlon X2 dual core system be for this? I'm considering this setup as an alternative to a Hybrid VPS typically running on a xeon quad core with RAID-10. Presumably the dedicated server would give me better performance because it uses a hardisk which is probably only twice as fast but serving 7 or more other customers, and it doesnt have the VM wrapper around the processor core impacting performance either. Though handling the RAID-1 in software might offset that. Anyone had experience with this? Also, one benefit of the Hybrid VPS systems I've seen is they allow the system to be rebooted. This dedicated system doesn't allow me to reboot the server at will - I have to submit a support ticket each time. Would this be a problem generally or is it a non-issue?

Mounting Hard Drive (HDD) In CentOS 5
so my provider setup my HDD's wrong (i believe). Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda2 9.7G 5.7G 3.6G 62% / /dev/sda5 215G 608M 204G 1% /var /dev/sda1 99M 16M 78M 17% /boot tmpfs 1013M 0 1013M 0% /dev/shm /usr/tmpDSK 485M 14M 447M 3% /tmp the problem is that I have /dev/sda5 mounted to var. I want cPanel to use this HDD as the main storage for the /home directory. How do I make cPanel use this hdd for storage?
