Limited West Coast Providers
Nov 25, 2008I was looking at the offer section and I found that there is limited choices for providers that is on the west coast. I am just looking for simple and cheap server to run on directadmin for my adult site but I can't seem to be able to find one. Anyone knows of any decent providers in the west?

IIS And Apache Running Side By Side
Sep 26, 2008My server is Win2003 Standard with IIS 6. I'm using IIS6 to host websites but i have a need to run subversion which require Apache. I'm wondering would it cause any problem with my current operation. Apache will run on different port than the standard 80.

PDO Side Effects
Dec 6, 2008Im wondering I have some things turned off like:
The PDO extension in PHP, pdo_mysql, etc.
Most scripts use PHP and MySQL extension so no problem at all until i came up with 1 little devil taht requires php with PDO and pdo_mysql
My question is, is there any side effect on a production server if i recompile apache with those extensiones turned on?
Do they run in parallel to the way php and mysql runs now or will it break the whole scripts running and send the server to hell?
Basically what i mean is, i have the resources on the server to run it but do they run in parallel or they change/reconfigure the whole way php and mysql works?

Apr 3, 2007I am really not sure if the location is effecting to speed. I am chooing a provider for colo'ing few servers. I know each region has very good providers (in both services and network, from reviews on WHT), but
- from the west coast to central, the latency difference is around 30 - 40ms
- from the central to the east coast, the latency difference is around 30ms
so, if I go with a provider in west coast, it really saves me 60-70ms latency from my area. However, someone likes gnax in east coast using Route Science, that's advertised to help to get the better routes.
I dont see any in west coast using RS or FCP. So, should I go
- with a "normal" provider (I mean network without RS or FCP equipments) in west coast,
- or with a provider with RS/FCP in any place?
Is the location really effecting to performance?

We are looking for a rsync provider in the west coast - I have checked out rsyncpalace and their machines are at WebNX and we are looking to keep our data in a different data center.

Jul 23, 2009I configured WebDisk on my webhost (via cPanel) and it works great on one computer but with the other there is a slight problem:
When the password was first entered it was mistyped, saved somewhere (I have no idea where, that's what I am trying to find out) and now whenever I try to connect I receive an error:

IIS Transparent Server-side Redirection

The webserver accessible to the public domain is within an dmz. The intranet I need to serve is within our internal network.
I've managed to convince our network admin to open port 80 on the server running the intranet but I can't seem to find a way to proxy the content from the intranet server, through the webserver and to the user.

Apr 19, 2007How do I configure Lighttpd to serve images/javascript/css files that are littered about my websites? Can I just input the paths of all the directories that I want Lighttpd to serve from?
For example, I have 4 separate websites with each having a message board, main page etc... Could I have lighty serve the files from:
/var/www/html/site1/images
/var/www/html/site2/images
/var/www/html/site3/images
/var/www/html/site4/images
/var/www/html/site1/javascript
etc....
and have Apache serve the files from all the other directories?
Route From Level 3 To Qwest On The West Coast
Aug 30, 2009I am looking at getting some Qwest bandwidth at 200 Paul, San Francisco. Not being too familar with Qwest's network and as part of evaluating that decision I did some testing to see how the routes/latency looked from various points on the Internet and from our other data centers. For pretty much all the testing I did from the major tier 1/2 networks, Qwest has great peering in places you would expect resulting is decent routes and low latency.
The strange thing is that the one exception is routes from Level 3. As an example, traffic from various Northern California points on Level 3's network to a test IP on Qwest's network in Sunnyvale all go via Denver to connect to Qwest and then back to the Bay Area. For LA originating traffic, it goves via Dallas. Same thing for Seattle that is going via Denver.
Hard to imagine these two tier 1 providers don't peer at any location on the west coast at all? Is this typical between these two or is there some temporary outage right now? Or is there some peering spat going on between them?
Seems pretty silly for traffic to go 3,000 miles between points that are only 10 miles apart!

Colocation For First Time Server On West Coast
May 1, 2008I'm colo'ing my first server, and I'm a little nervous about sending my server to the mainland (I'm in Hawaii) for colo. I was looking at Pacific Rack, and also at iWeb. Can anybody comment on these or recommend anybody else? I just need very basic 1U colo.
Dependability and low ping times from Hawaii are my main priorities. Preferably something that Time Warner is tied into since most Hawaii residents use Road Runner cable modems.
I'm going to be running a dedicated zimbra server.
West Vs East Coast US Servers For Europeans
Jun 26, 2008if having servers on the East coast vs the West coast would give significantly better speeds for those people accessing sites from Europe?
We have servers in Texas and someone trying to sell us on a CDN (content delivery network) showed us numbers where it was taking 4-5x longer for someone from Europe to download a file. We want our sites to be faster for Europeans so I was wondering if moving to the East coast would help.

I have my photography site (sfxphoto.com) currently being hosted as my main site (site contents are located inside of the publichtml folder). I also have my photo retouching site (elite-retouch.com) being hosted as a sub-domain under the main site (which has it's own folder inside of the publichtml folder). I'm being hosted through InfluxHost on a Linux server.
My Dilemma:
For the photo retouching site, I want to be able to give my clients their OWN FTP access to a designated potion of the server.
So, lets say my client upload directory is "publichtml/eliteretouch.com/client_ftp". I then want to be able to make a folder for (we'll call him) client_a inside of the "/client_ftp" folder. So the full directory to THAT clients specific folder will be: "publichtml/eliteretouch.com/client_ftp/client_a"
How can I:
1) ...set their specific FTP to open to their directory only?
2) ...ensure that they cannot navigate to other folders on my server?
3) ...make it so that the login information doesn't carry the MAIN site name, but the sub-domain site name instead?
Enabling Server Side Includes Safety
Jan 30, 2008I want to enable our server ssi server side includes (.shtml parsed).
My hosting company controls our server uptime, daily backup, server loads etc. when i request them; can you please enable ssi for shtml pages, i want to use ssi includes etc.. they suggested me use php instead of shtml for includes.
I want to .shtml, beacuse i use only ssi include header, footer same pages, also these pages search engine friendly.
Apache version: 2.0.52
I posted them please add following lines and restart apache afterwards:
Options +IncludesNoExec
AddType text/html .shtml
AddOutputFilter INCLUDES .shtml
They added and restarted apache, but not any affect. When i access .shtml pages via web browser, page opening successfully but not parse ssi includes, example:

but not parse, also i cannot use .htaccess files, our server admin say restricted them because security reasons.
I requested them our server root username and password, they say to me; before give you server root password, we remove all our server administration software from server and server administration service will be cancelled.

Server is for DNS, SNMP monitoring and some backup data only. Minimum requirement are 512MB+, small CPU, 80GB/120GB+ HDD and 200GB+ Traffic should be enough for it. More than 1 IP, remote power and Gentoo Linux is preferred.
I had searched in the past but it seeams that companies like vrtservers/theplanet/etc. will have much higher prices right now as a half year before. I know there were one for $29-$39 in SJ or LA depending on the RAM/HDD/IP but I don't remember which company it was.
But in general it seams that servers in Europe (NL, Germany, ...) will be much cheaper right now with much more support and features like RemotePower, more IP addresses, ...

Apr 20, 2009Couple days ago all of a sudden my host that I've been with for years all of a sudden went down the drain. Why? Supposedly, my site was used for spam? Stupid. They are "trying" to compile my database and files, but I DOUBT that will happen.

This is what I have. I have Apache and IIS both running on Windows 2k3.
Apache is running in reverse Proxy mode sending multiple domains/virtual hosts to IIS.

Now, if I type in [url]everything works great and IIS (listening on 127.0.0.1:8080) serves the page. However, I am doing custom error trapping, so when I type in [url](and /mydirectory doesn't exist on IIS) I need to fire ASP code (via custom error messages/handling) on the IIS server and then present a data driven page.
However, Apache is returning A 502 error:

The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.
The proxy server could not handle the request GET /mydirectory.
Reason: DNS lookup failure for: localhost:8080mydirectory
Is there a way for me to setup Apache to pass all error checking to IIS while using it as a reverse proxy?
