Frequent Failure Notices (exim, Clamd, Etc.)

Dec 12, 2007

On 11/29/07, I posted the following question, but have received no replies to date:

Quote:

TITLE: Are frequent failure notices common with VPS hosting?

We have a VPS1 account at Liquid Web ($60/month). Below I have copied just the most recent series of failure notices (clamd, cpsrvd, exim, ftpd, mysql, pop, spamd). We tend to receive these by e-mail on a fairly regular basis, accompanied by the usual message "A restart was attempted automagicly."

Since March 2006, when we first switched our web host to LW, there have been well over a hundred of them.

My question is: Are such frequent failures commonplace (i.e.: benign) on a VPS, or should I be concerned about them?

I usually check our web site after receiving each notice, and it is always up by the time I get there. Nevertheless, it would be nice to know if all these occurrences are considered normal. For example, 19 exim failures over a 6.5-hour span on 9/29/07 do seem a bit extreme.

If anyone reading this thread is technically inclined, I'd like to know what process or hardware state is usually responsible for causing such failures.

FYI, I use cPanel in my web browser to administer the site from a Macintosh computer running OS 9.2.2. I have never used SSH, and have also never read any raw logs. If I did, I'm not sure what they would tell me about this, anyway.

I should also say that our site uses nowhere near the capacity provided by our VPS1 account. We are well below the maximum HD space and monthly allowable bandwidth. The site uses only standard HTML, text include files, and GIF/JPG graphics files; no streaming. There is only limited use of a CGI script for routine form submissions, and currently there are no PHP scripts running for BBs, calendars, blogs, chat rooms, or any MySQL databases being used. In short, I would think that the site places little load on the server or its processes.

I would greatly appreciate any feedback.

(Note that our real host name has been replaced above with "xxxxxx" to prevent possible spamming.)

I would appreciate any comments from experienced VPS customers or technicians, as to whether these incidences are considered normal with all VPS accounts, or if they might be indicative of a more severe problem with our web host's (Liquid Web) server.

As I mentioned on 11/29/07, "I use cPanel in my web browser to administer the site from a Macintosh computer running OS 9.2.2. I have never used SSH, and have also never read any raw logs. If I did, I'm not sure what they would tell me about this, anyway."

In the course of reading a number of posts in another WHT thread, there seems to be little agreement on the possible causes. Some have suggested that (1.) there may be "no space left on the device"; (2.) we may be "out of Semaphores" (I have no idea what those are!); (3.) we may be "out of RAM"; (4.) "/tmp is full"; or that (5.) "something is wrong with /tmp permission."

When I inquired in 2006 to Liquid Web's technical support about these recurrent failures, I was told that they are normal with this sort of hosting account. We pay them a hosting fee with the expectation of receiving an accurate diagnosis, but it would be very helpful to receive some impartial, third-party input.

Can't Turn Off Logging Of PHP Notices

Apr 29, 2008

Running Apache 2.2.2 and PHP 5.2.5, and my error_logs are filling up with PHP notices. I'd like to turn this feature off, but I must be missing something here. I've edited the php.ini and set error_reporting = E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE, and reloaded apache, but I still get the same php notices over and over again in the httpd error log.

Frequent Rebooting

Jul 14, 2007

I have a server that is monitored with a system that automatically reboots if a service appears to be down. The server is being rebooted several times a month and it seems to be getting more frequent.

The server load is almost never high. It's a dual Xeon with hyperthreading and the load is almost always below 1. Practically the only time it goes high is during cPanel backup and it hardly ever reboots during that.

The DC tried replacing the RAM, but a day and a half later it rebooted again.

The server has 1 fairly active MySQL message board and 3 fairly high bandwidth sites (images and video clips), and the rest of the sites are quite small and inactive. One thing the tech said was "Apache gets a lot of traffic so I'm not surprised to see an apache restart once a month or so. You have 115 concurrent connections to apache and over 25,000 hits in the last 2 hours alone" but I've gotten reboots a few times/week.

Frequent Downtime Of Site

Apr 30, 2008

I bought a plan from SurpassHosting and hosted my site, tenshi-dream.net. The domain name was purchased from namecheap.

Recently I noticed that most of the time, only the main page (tenshi-dream.net) can be access but not the rest of the pages (eg. log.tenshi-dream or tenshi-dream.net/network.html)

Hence, I submitted a ticket to SurpassHosting. After investigation, they replied that the cause was not them and told me to contact server2.verygoodserver.com. I have no idea why because when I check Whois database, my domain does not belong to that nameserver.

I wish to move to another host but am afraid that the problem will still persist.

Clamd Really Necessary/useful On VPS

Aug 3, 2008

I'm running WHM 11.15.0 cPanel 11.18.3-R21703 CENTOS Enterprise 4.5 i686 on virtuozzo - WHM X v3.1.0. I'm on a fully managed plan. Clamd has been using over 20% of my VPS's memory lately. I restart Exim and it drops it back to under 10% but it usually builds back up to 20% in an hour or so. My host basically says that this is the nature of the beast and is suggesting disabling clam altogether but I'm not sure if that's a good idea. I have never even received an email that had a virus removed by clam that I'm aware of. I'm pretty sure my clients are all using some sort of AV anyway. So maybe I don't need it?

Clamd.conf ArchiveMaxCompressRatio (ClamAV Nub)

Apr 17, 2008

I have a VPS that started sending me emails last night (in mass) giving me failures saying

clamd failed @ Thu Apr 17 13:11:50 2008. A restart was attempted automagically.

I ran a yum update, and since the server isn't critical I just gave it a restart. Still getting the errors, I checked the boot.log file, where I saw errors like:

Apr 17 12:37:56 host exim: Starting clamd:
Apr 17 12:37:56 host clamd: ERROR: Parse error at line 299: Unknown option ArchiveMaxCompressionRatio.
Apr 17 12:37:56 host clamd: ERROR: Can't open/parse the config file /etc/clamd.conf
Apr 17 12:37:56 host exim: ERROR: Can't open/parse the config file /etc/clamd.conf
Apr 17 12:37:56 host exim: clamd startup failed
The clamd.conf file hasn't been edited since it was installed in August, I'm not sure why it decided to have issues now. So I just commented out the ArchiveMaxCompressionRatio directive in the config file to get it up and running again.

I have no knowledge of ClamAV (clamd), so I'm not sure exactly what it archives or how it compresses it, but I was just wondering if this will a) cause any noticeable issues and/or b) if theres a new directive equivalent to this one I should use instead (man just said "outdated").

The Planet Failure

Apr 28, 2009

I was hosted with these guys for well over 2 years, and was spending on average more than $2,000.00 a month for servers.

I had slowly grown to well over 10 boxes, and was definately on my way. then one day I get a spam complaint that one of my serves was casing complaints. So I checked it out, and asked for the complaints to be relayed so I would have record of it..... nothing.... I responded and even tried to call, but at that point they had sent me a tciket stating.

We have recieved well ofer 1000 spam complaints from a server you lease with us, per out TOS we are terminating ALL OF YOUR SERVERS, and you have 15 days to remove the data!

WOW... there was no ability to have them terminate that server, they simply said NO your account will be terminated (all of your servers) and you will be banned from The Planet!

When I tried to call they said your not allowed to speak with the abuse dept, again I tried contacting my account manager, and he said he checked into it and only saw a few complaints, and didn;t understand why they were doing this... In short I barely got moved over to another provideer before they shut me down completely..... They did however offer one course of action... you could turn your dedicated server clients over to us so they dont have to move! THEY ACTUALLY SAID THIS!

I at that point made the move and then they hit my credit card for another month well short of 20 days before a bill would even be due.. I had to file charges at the local courthouse to get this reversed.

My advice, if you host at the planet dont send mail. get another server provider for mail, these guys are *&^)(* and they don;t care about shutting you down no matter what you spend with them, on top of that they will try to scarf your clients up if they can, after they leave you high and dry....

Anyone else have issues like this with anyone else. I want to compile a list of providers that do business like this so I can avoid them.

Godaddy = Failure

Nov 4, 2009

Probably nothing new. Seriously, they're horrible and everyone here probably knows it. But... I'm ticked, so I'll add something extra to show how genius they are.

The problem is I can't seem to reach my website on godaddy. It appears as if the server is down. Both via the browser and ftp it fails.

Anyway, I could write a review but no need... I'll let the e-mail I sent them and their responses do the talking.

Okay, thanks for the information... I'm still humored that needing my pin is
actual security considering it's listed on your website after I login. My
password is way better security because it's never visible anywhere...
anyway... based on the information you gave me here's what I have found out..

The first instance of me not being able to reach the website was around noon
EST yesterday. Earlier that morning I was on the website and had logged in
via FTP. After noon the website was no longer reachable. This is a test from
one computer.

Around 6PM on a different network, the website was reachable from 3
different computers, including the one it wasn't reachable from earlier that
day. About 30 minutes later the website became unreachable again. Attempts
to reach it from all 3 machines failed.

This morning, I considered your response email and assuming the webserver is
up like you stated, I decided to try another network. The website was up on
that network. However, it is still down on the other two networks. It seems
that the website works for a limited time on each network before something
happens to keep the network from reaching the webserver.

Attempts at pinging the webserver all fail.

Doing a tracert to 2leet.com times out at the following: ....

Raid 5 Failure

Nov 7, 2007

just a 4 drive raid 5 array go down, this is hardware based, controller indicates a 2 drive failure.

It is possible to rebuild this array from the 2 good drives?

Thing is that drives come up fine in test system when testing in spinrite which show no problems, though only 2 show partition structure others just come up as empty!
