Quad Core's...Are They Useful

Sep 17, 2007

I read that quad cores, really aren't that useful since, most applicaitons aren't multi-threaded...*has no idea what that means*

If i used a quad core for a few websites that get about 20k visitors per day, would it noticeably increase perfermance compared to just a regular dual core?

Normal Pricing For Dual Quad Cores

servers for a freehosting project and came across a good quote on some dual quad core amds for $320 a month. Is this about right? I don't want to give the exact location away as this was a custom quote but it's located in chicago. The network is Internap FCP optimized with internap, level3, and comcast.

4 CPU Cores Or 8

Aug 17, 2008

I'm on a vps and sometimes hit 100% of my allowable cpu - this company allows me to burst to one cpu but no farther. I also have a new vps at Servint and have yet to learn their cpu allotments.

My older host that is hitting CPU limits and slowing and having times of outages, suggest i take their high end 4 CPU cores (Intel Clovertown E5310 or better), SAS/SCSI drives (in RAID), 8 GB memory for just $250/month (basic management, no control panel).

CPU is my weak point so should i consider 8 cores?

I can add 3 times the volume of traffic once I'm capable of handling it.

4 or 8 cores? How much more will 8 cores cost?

MySQL Server More Cores Or More Mhz

May 8, 2008

to pickup a dedicated MySQL 5 server from Dell running Linux. I have the option of either getting:

(1x) Quad Core Xeon E5430 2x6MB Cache 2.66Ghz

(2x) Quad Core Xeon E5405 2x6MB Cache 2.00Ghz

They are about the same price. What option is best? The 4 cores but 666mhz faster each core, or double the cores (8), but less mhz per core. Can MySQL 5 even use 8 cores effectivley?

Plesk 12.x / Linux :: Backup And Quota - Limit Number Of Cores Backup Zipping Tool Uses?

Aug 15, 2014

I have 2 problems:

Firstly I wonder if there is any possibility to limit the number of cores the plesk backup zipping tool uses? This pigz takes up all my CPU. Is there any way I can reduce the amount of cores it uses because all my websites are down every time a backup takes place for around 3 minutes.

Secondly I get the following in my syslog:

1 baby plesk sendmail[20189]: Error during 'check-quota' handler

I don't know what is wrong. I think it's since the upgrade to Plesk 12. I now have 12.0.18 Update #13.

1x Intel Quad Core Xeon X3210 / 8MB CPU

1x Intel Dual-Core E2160 CPU

It is 10$ more for version with dual core and more RAM but that money is not problem.

I am more interested what is better for mostly database/php kind of site (not expert but i hope you guys knows what kind need Wordpress request).

More powerful CPU or more RAM?

Quad Core For Db Server

Aug 17, 2007

About to pickup a server strictly for use with MySQL databases.

Right now there's zero price difference between the Intel 5110 dual core and the 5310 quad cores. Looking around a bit online, it seems like the quad core is of no benefit (or lesser performance) than the dualie. That sql cannot take advantage of it yet.

Is this accurate? If so, where do quad core CPU's shine at this point in time?

2 X Core2Duo Vs. 1 X Quad Core Xeon

Oct 5, 2008

I have a Quad Core Xeon right now that I had set up with RAID 1. I'm getting horrible Disk I/O rates for this drive, 1.57MB/sec sequential write speeds. I'm having slowdowns that seem to be database related and more specifically I/O related. I run both my webserver (IIS/ASP) and my database (SQL SERVER 2000) on this Quad Core Xeon box with 4GB RAM. The disk I/O is killing me. I see that I have plenty of CPU cycles and plenty of free memory. At this point I'd sacrifice RAID 1 for better performance.

Should I got with the Quad Core Xeon with 4GB RAM for this webserver/database server config or go with 2 Core2Duo servers with 2GB RAM each?
