Multiple Host Unmetered Shared BW Benchmark

Apr 14, 2008

Has anyone done a benchmark of test files for multiple unmeetered hosts during peak hours?

I have a 100mbit server at ThePlanet i could use for benchmarking. I could write a simple benchmark program to record the time+speed of a list of shared bw test files.

I'll have it sample each host for 10sec every hour. With that we can make a speed/time graph for each host.

My server is in TX on a shared line but not unlimited BW.

It would be nice if we can get some benchmarks from other data centers.

Would this reflect actual speeds?

Shared Unmetered Bandwidth

Oct 16, 2009

I got a question about shared unmetered bandwidth offerings. Currently we specialise in Dedicated Unmetered bandwidth offers but also offer metered.

we see an increase in demand for shared unmetered, with some minor guarantees of troughput. Much in the style of FDC servers. We are toying with the idea, to add a shared unmetered service thats overbooked 1/4 (100 mbit) or 1/6 (gigabit).

The questions.

Are these overbooking rates reasonable? it looks like other companies roughly have these overbooking factors.

What kind of hardware should be bundle with such an offer? obviously its the bargain hunter category (no pun intended) that we would try to appeal to. Would that mean generally lower end servers like ATOMs?

Servers In Europe W/ Unmetered 100Mbit (SHARED)

Mar 26, 2008

My friend asked me earlier if I knew any places in EU that allow IRC, have Unmetered 100Mbit (SHARED, not Dedicated), and allow torrents. I didn't know so I come to WHT for help.

The host must have:

Unmetered 100Mbit Shared
IRC Allow
Allow Torrents
DDoS Protection (not required, but is a bonus)
Must be in Europe

I'm unsure if asking this is allowed (since the host must allow torrents), if it isn't allowed please lock the thread.

Adult Host, Managed, With Unmetered Bandwidth

Feb 6, 2006

I am hosting a few websites with my host, (shared hosting). Now I am thinking to go for an adult xxx website, and my host is not ready to host an adult website with them, and thus, I am looking for a new host now.

Things are:

1. I have very little knowledge about server management, as till now my shared host was doing everything, so I may need a host who offers a completely managed hosting, including backups, security, etc (just as a shared host would do).

2. I need a host that allows extreme adult contents.

3. The site will be a new one, but I am planning to go for offline marketing and hoping that I will get a good amount of visitors. Also the site will offer online movies. Taking these things into consideration, I am thinking that I may need a host that offers unmetered bandwidth.

I would like to get some tips from you guys, and if any of you know a good host, thanks for letting me know as well.

VPS Vs. Shared With Multiple Domains

May 10, 2007

i just had a simple question about wether there is any difference between getting a VPS plan (like that from jumpline) and a shared plan (like that from hostgator) for the purposes of hosting multiple domains.

It seems that for vps I have to create a "subdirectory" to create a new account for domain name. Plus the emails are all the same (so for example if I create and I have registerd, will also work with the same username password).

On the shared side of things - I also do not get a very high level of isolation. Not like with reseller WHM package anyways. BUT the resellers lack the basic ssh access (at least the most favourables I looked at).

So i was wandering if anyone out there who is doing small-time part work and sells personal/business websites to clients knows which way is it better to go.

To get a VPS account and keep on creating subdirectories for each separate client (and hope they don't use the "other" domain names in the emails)
get the shared account that allows unlimited domans
something else.

I also forgot to mention that my budget does not extend beyond $20/month.

Multiple Domains On Shared Hosting

Sep 3, 2008

I run several sites and am wanting to setup several more. Currently I have two shared plans, but I don't like how the add-on domains are affected by the main domain (e.g. on 4## and 5## pages).

Is going reseller the easiest way for me to have these domains not affected by each other (a separate cpanel each)?

Finally, I don't use a lot of resources so are there actually reseller plans out there with lower prices (and lower resources too).

Performance Benchmark

Feb 19, 2008

I have several VPS's that I run. Some run LAMP, others RoR, and my latest runs with Nginx + Cherrypy (python).

To be honest, I've never run any benchmarks to see how well the servers performed under stress. But I'd like to start.

Are there are good (free) programs out there that will stress test my web servers? I develop on windows, but deploy on linux, so either platform is ok. I'm most interested in how many concurrent connections can be maintained.

MySQL Benchmark Script

I am looking for some kind of benchmark script to compare MySQL before and after optimization (Changing certain parameters). It should give some indication of response times. Maybe also an indication of the slowest commands.

Would be great if it can give some score with some reference.

Also, since this is not a test environment (I have my sites hosted on this VPS), I would prefer if it's easy to use and doesn't mess with anything else.

Server Host That Gives Multiple IP Addresses

Sep 10, 2008

Our dedicated server runs our virtual machines for us and the NAT option is terrible...the virtual machines work REALLY well when they use a Bridged connection. The problem is that our virtual machines have to acquire an IP address somehow, and the hosting provider we currently use says they only give one IP address to our server which is fine if the NAT within the software worked really there a webhost that can provide a setup where they have a router hooked to our dedicated server so if we need more local IP's they can be given/assigned by the router. This would then allow us to run our virtual machines much better. Does anybody know of a dedicated server host that will do this?

How To Host A Forum With Multiple Web Servers?

Jul 10, 2007

I notice that some forums are run by multiple web servers.

They offer choices for visitors from different regions so that they can enjoy a better speed when browsing.

e.g. Visitors from USA use www1 , visitors from Europe use www2

My question is: how to synchronize the contents and files between different web servers?

For the dynamic content, one database server can be setup. So that all php scripts on different web servers can retrieve from the same database source.

But then, in a real-time forum, how to synchronize the files between the web servers? For example, one user from www1 uploads a file. This file will go to www1's filesystem. How to make this file appears in www2's filesytem?

I can think of 'rsync' every minute between servers. But still it's not real-time, and there may be problems if sychronication can't be finished within the minute.

Overselling Web Hosts - Benchmark Review Idea

May 3, 2008

I'm interested in creating a small website exposing the biggest overselling companies, and how their overselling practices are false marketing.

Simply put, I want to benchmark each host with exact tests for accuracy. Any idea how I can fairly test each host, e.g. benchmark?

After the tests have been performed, I will explain which are the worst hosts (e.g. the first to give me the boot due to some TOS clause, e.g. cpu usage), etc.

Also, would anyone like to help out with this project? I'll be putting some nice marketing into it.

Shopping For Host To Support Multiple WordPress Blogs

Sep 26, 2009

I am using to host a WordPress blog and want to create more blogs.

Since took 26 hours to restore my blog when somehow it was corrupted (no explanation on what they did), I have decided I need to host it someplace where I have full control.

I would be prepared to reinstall WordPress on my own. I also want to have the ability to control redirects. aplus provides a handful of very weak tools for managing the site.

I'm looking for a host that would allow me to manage multiple domains, and multiple instances of WordPress. I'm prepared to manage the MySQL db (if I have to, though I would prefer it if I had support for this).
