Good Experiences Hosting Gallery2 Photo Sites

Apr 15, 2008

If you have current experience with hosting Gallery2 photo sites, please give us your opinion on hosts.

Gallery2 is PHP and MySQL based.

I am looking at a few customers (schools, sports groups) who would eventually have 2 to 5 GB of photos, but fairly light hits (Students, Parents, Friends). This would not be a NFL site! But responsiveness is relatively important.

Medium-cost (Say up to $15/M) shared hosting probably? Looking at maybe Hostgator, HostMonster, A1WebHosting. Your experiences/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

My current site on (!PowWeb) is passable, but I want these sites ElseWhere...

1&1 Dedicated Servers: Good Experiences

Apr 24, 2008

I have been with 1&1 for over three years now and I have never seen our dedicated server go down. Their network is first-class and I have actually been able to get transfer rates of over 10MB/sec on our 100Mbps port.

I'm in the market for a colo host now because our current hardware is getting old and the CPU is really loaded down, but in my search I realized how many bad comments there are and how few good comments there are about hosts. Therefore, I just wanted to try and make the reviews more equitable before I leave this host (and possible get ripped off at my next one

Good Experience With Tiny-Sites

Oct 30, 2008

I will start by stressing that I have only been with them for 2 months. I will be back throughout my time with them to drop more information.

I started with Tiny-Sites when they were first beginning business and got a pretty good hosting deal. 250 mb of storage and 5 gb (4.88 actual) bandwith and a domain for what amounted to $12 and some odd change after discount. They answered several questions up-front, in addition to agreeing to instal an SSL for me, as well as switching me from the free domain to one I had already purchased, setting the free domain as a redirect.

The DirectAdmin control panel is simple, but powerful. Using the installatron I was able to easily install Wordpress. It did take me a while to discover the magic of what an FTP normally does, otherwise I might never have gotten ComicPress properly installed.

I have had one instance of downtime in the two months. I placed a support ticket and was answered within 27 minutes. I'm not sure where they are located, but around my area (Nebraska), it was 8 o'clock in the evening and definitely after hours. The problem was related to another user uploading a BOT. They maintain a backup and had us back online within an hour.

When they upgraded to better plans with unlimited databases and email accounts, I requested information or billing to upgrade to those from a 5 limit plan and was upgraded at no fee, which I certainly appreciated.

I know it is still early and I am not making much use of resources yet, but I am extremely pleased thus far and would recommend them to others.

Cpu Usage... Is It The Same As Cpu Cycles- And Any Good Webhost Monitoring Sites

Oct 29, 2009

I'm trying to write an article about webhosting. I've completed most of the article but there are some points I still can't figure out.

a) I'm actually confused about this: is limiting of cpu usage the same as limiting cpu cycles or even cpu throttling? I see these terms mentioned everywhere but they're all quite confusing.

b) And also, where can I find good sites for tracking webhost uptime and with some comprehensive data? I've only found this comprehensive site so far but have failed to find any others: [url]

And any other sites I found have been mediocre.

Is Google Sites A Good Place To Start Experimenting For A Newbie?

Mar 22, 2009

Looking to quickly practice with and master my HTML/CSS skills after reading Build Your Own Web Site The Right Way Using HTML & CSS. At the end of the book he mentions site hosting, which I know Google does for free through "Sites".

That said, Sites looks to be designed for the non-web designer, for the average Joe looking to get his own website. So I'm wondering if people who have used it know if it supports an external CSS or if I can upload various image files. I figure that it is probably best that I don't use shortcuts in the initial learning phase.

I don't have a particular site idea in mind, just looking to play around with things and try them out.

Hosting Several Sites

I am interested in your suggestions as to what I should do. I need a setup that will allow me to host several sites. They are mostly my own and low traffic. I do not offer hosting to any other folks, if so, i will set the sites up myself. I need mysql, email and virus checker, php, and firewall. I would like unix/linus hosting and am used to cpanel. Would prefer east coast hosting since many sites pertain to local areas there. I was thinkg of a reseller or webmaster package.

Dedicated Hosting, Sites And Questions

Nov 13, 2006

Hi I've never worked with a dedicated host, and I was considering going with hostgator, because they provide managed hosting and cPanel, which I'm fond of.

This is not for my own sites, but for someone I work for as a programmer/webmaster. He has asked that I make the decision on this, even though I've basically advised against it, due to my lack of experience with dedicated hosting.

I've also looked at lunarpages, doesn't seem to be much different than hostgator. Here are links to their pages...

Does anyone have experience from either of these? I don't think the sites hosted on the server are going to be particularly high bandwidth sites (I don't really think they even need a dedicated host) ... do you think we'll be okay with a single 2.8 Ghz processor?

Also, does anyone have any advice as far as the number of sites hosted on the server? He wants to move ALL of them to the same server. Any thoughts on whether or not this is a good idea?

I know I've asked a lot here but I'm really getting into new territory. If you can provide any input on ANY of the above items, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Best Solution To Run Several Domains/sites On Your Hosting Account

Oct 10, 2009

As a domainer I have several domainnames I like to add to a hostingaccount.

Many of the domains will have a blog or minisite.

At this moment I have a shared hosting account with unlimited domains.

But for seo reasons it is better not to link the domains/urls to eachother cause they have the same IP.

What can you recommend me to have all the domains on different IP's?

Or is there another way to do this,I heard something about c-class....

If I have to put the domains on different IP's on my shared hosting account I will have to pay $2,50 for an IP per month, this will be quite expensive.

Hosting Needed For Investment Affiliate Sites

Apr 5, 2008

I say relative, because I have built several websites in the past, going back to 1998 or so, but have never really pursued it heavily, and only recently have decided to get into the game on a more proactive scale.

In searching for a web host, I run across common TOS which seems on the surface to exclude what I want to do, which among other niches I've got in mind, include investing (gold, real estate, forex, commodities, etc.).

Maybe some of the hosting vendors here can help me with clarification. I do not want to host an investment platform, like a stock or forex trading platform. I just want to publish info sites with affiliate links to the investment products I deem worthy.

Any problem with that? If so, does anyone know of good hosting for such sites?

I've perused many hosting forums lately and find this one to be among the top of the top! Good job WHT owners!

Which Web Sites For Technical Information On Windows Hosting

May 15, 2007

I work for Microsoft. Used to be a regular participant on Web Hosting Talk a few years ago (then moved over to Europe at that time). I've been doing some work recently that has led me back to the community here to ask for some input on where administrators of Windows-based hosting services go to find technical information.

How often might you use the following two Web sites?

1) [Hosting Solutions on TechNet]

2) [Windows Hosting Discussions]

I've just re-registered a new account so I have to do the five post thing before I can insert links, otherwise I'd to a direct link to the two above. If you're not familar with them, just do a Web search for those phrases and the sites will be at the top of the list.

Are there other Web sites that you use regularly for technical information on operating Windows hosting services? Or do you mostly just enter a phrase in Google and temporarily use the Web site/s that come up in the search results?
