Servers Missing Rails

Oct 30, 2007

I have some cheap servers, a couple years old, that are missing the rails. I'm looking for options for mounting them, preferably without taking-up space with 1U shelves.

Best Hosting For Rails

Apr 10, 2008

I don't wanna say "rails-specific" hosts because I'll be hosting some python/PHP, but I want a host run by a team who actually know and use Ruby on Rails themselves. Deployment shouldn't be a pain, and it should be VPS. My budget is $25/mo for now, as I don't need much space or bandwidth until I begin scaling the sites.

I will be hosting numerous rails sites, so memory might be a problem if I'm using mongrel... but performance wise, is mongrel the best?

Right now I'm looking at SliceHost, HostingRails, and Linode.

4u Generic Rails

Could someone recomend some cheap rails(or a supplier of) for a 4u generic box with the screw holes along the middle?

I stumbled accross webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=564036 from a few years back, but it seems to talk mostly about shelving.

Chenbro.co.uk have a set to fit "99%" of cases, does anyone have any experiences with these?

Ruby On Rails Slowness

Aug 20, 2007

Ruby on Rails is running quite slow. I've had my server administration company look at it after I looked at it myself. I'm running out of ideas and was planning on trying a last-ditch memory upgrade to see if it helps. I'm not so sure it will.

Everything is installed and the app. is working, it just takes ~5-7 seconds to load. There are no errors or anything. Has anyone had this problem or could anyone suggest something to try?

This is a cPanel server. I've monitored the loading and dispatch.cgi runs during the load and all like it should.

Ruby On Rails: MissingSourceFile Sqlite3

Jul 25, 2008

I'm trying to get Ruby on Rails to work on my cPanel 11 box. I followed the instruction on the cPanel website and it seems like Ruby on Rails is now properly installed. I created a RoR project via cPanel and added a rewrite rule.

Now when I visit the URL, I get the following error message in my browser:

We're sorry, but something went wrong.

We've been notified about this issue and we'll take a look at it shortly.

I have sqlite3 installed as well as the sqlite3-ruby gem. I've been Googling for hours but I just can't find to seem the solution. The only thing I can find is that I have to install sqlite3-ruby gem, sqlite3 and sqlite3-dev but I already have them. I also found a permissions-fix which changes permissions on the gem to 644 but that didn't fix it either.

New Dell Poweredge Rails Too Short

May 6, 2008

We have a rack with a bunch of Dell servers in them. The distance between the front vertical mounting brackets and the rear vertical mounting brackets is just over 28 inches (715 mm). We've always used Dell static rails they and they have always fitted perfectly.

We have recently received some new Poweredge 2970s with Rapid / Versa rails, and it seems that the front and rear mounting brackets are only 24 inches (609 mm) apart.

Am I missing something? I can't find any way of adjusting the length of the Rapid / Versa rails.

It looks like we are going to have to pull all the gear out of the rack, move the rear mounting brackets forward, and put everything back in. This is a real nuisance (and I would do pretty much anything to avoid it).

24" Depth Rails/mounting Kit For Supermicro 2U CSE-825TQ/SC-825

May 30, 2008

Basically, I bought this case:

and didn't forsee any problems as we have lots of servers with this case at work (which is where I am co-locating the server) but I didn't realize that the racks we have those servers in are setup for a longer depth (like 26-30 inches) instead of 24 inches like the rest of the racks. Well the problem is that all employee stuff is limited to two different racks and both are 24" depth racks so the rails which came with the chassis (26 inch) will not work. Does anyone know of anywhere I could get a 24" rack mount kit which will work with the supermicro SC-825 2U case?

Mounting Brackets/rails For A DAT Drive In A DELL Server

Sep 13, 2007

I look after a Dell PE2800 server, it has a pair of 5.25 bays on the front, the top most of the two contains a Dell PowerVault 100T DAT72 tape backup drive. I have a second identical drive that i now wish to install into the bay beneath in a similar manner.

Problem is this - my colleague tell me that Dell are no longer selling the mounting brackets / rails needed to install the drive. I have had a fruitless look through the internet for a number of weeks now and hope that someone in the forum may be able to suggest a solution to the problem... anybody know a source for the brackets? Is there a parts site somewhere ive missed? Anyone happen to have what im after? Or any alternative suggestions?

Hardware: Db Servers, Web Servers, File Servers. Cpu, Ram, Disk

Jan 20, 2007

I have a lot of questions here so if you can't answer them all I understand. even pointing me somewhere where I could get the answers would be appreciated; hardware sites focusing on server hardware, forums focusing on such, etc.

we plan to have three different types of servers:

- db server (self explanatory. mysql. for forums, mysql driven sites.)

- file server (lots of files around ~2-10MB, consistant 70mbps right now, but we want more room for upgrades. needs a LOT of storage room.)

- web server (lots of php files, but also static things like plain html, images, etc. also includes all misc services for the setup-- dns, etc.)

could I be given a rundown for which hardware each of the three should have? I don't need specifics, even just knowing that more ram is important here while cpu doesn't matter as much, or that the fastest disks available are a must, etc would all be valuable info for me. despite that, I certainly wouldn't mind specific hypothetical hardware configs.

for the database server I'm assuming the more ram the better. not entirely sure about the cpu? also not positive on disks...

for the fileserver, how much ram would be practical or useful? disk io will be an issue I'm because plenty of people will be pulling files at once so the disk needs to read from multiple places. scsi (and even raptors) are not an option as we need 750GB+ of space on a reasonable budget. more ram will take some load of of the disks, but how much is neccessary / reasonable?

for the web server I'm assuming cpu first, then ram, but it'll likely need less ram than the db server?

I'm more lost on the disks than anything. scsi on the fileserver is not an option under any circumstances due to $/GB. for the db & web server I'm willing to pay for scsi if the performance increase really does warrant the extra money, but I'd like to be convinced before shelling it out. if you have benchmarks geared at server hardware when it comes to disks I'd really appreciate it.

also, what's the best way to network these together when colocated? each one with a dual gigabit ethernet port and then the communications go to and from the router?

Missing Nameservers

Apr 9, 2009

How to correct "Missing nameservers reported by your nameservers"?

The Nameservers of the dedicated server is working just fine but whenever I create nameserver for my reseller account on WHM all domains using the nameservers of my resellers which is something like this ns1.resellerdomain.com ns2.resellerdomain.com, I got error from dns tool Missing nameservers reported by your nameserver. but all domains under that reseller works okay but I just want to make sure there is issue on this matter.

ERROR: One or more of the nameservers listed at the parent servers are not listed as NS records at your nameservers.

The problem NS records are:
ns2.resellerdomain.com
ns1.resellerdomain.com

This is listed as an ERROR because there are some cases where nasty problems can occur (if the TTLs vary from the NS records at the root servers and the NS records point to your own domain, for example).

Missing Stealth Nameservers

May 11, 2006

I ran my domain name through a dns test site and it came up with this message. Does anyone know what it means, is my site in trouble?

WARNING: Your nameservers do not include any corresponding A records when asked for your NS records. They probably are not returning the A records when asked, which can prevent some other DNS servers from contacting your DNS servers. They should do this if they are authoritative for those A records.

FAIL: You have one or more missing (stealth) nameservers. The following nameserver(s) are listed (at your nameservers) as nameservers for your domain, but are not listed at the the parent nameservers (therefore, they may or may not get used, depending on whether your DNS servers return them in the authority section for other requests, per RFC2181 5.4.1). You need to make sure that these stealth nameservers are working; if they are not responding, you may have serious problems! The DNS Report will not query these servers, so you need to be very careful that they are working properly
