High Cpu Usage (httpd)

I noticed high cpu usage on my server since a couple of days ago. I neither updated software nor changed the configurations on the server. The server load was about 0.5 ~ 1.0 but now the average CPU load does not go below 5.0

when I stop apache (1.3) the load goes down and as soon as I start it up the load start increasing.

I checked for DoS but it seems nothing exists of this type.

I tried to follow the access_log file but from the first view nothing is strange there.

I don't have any control panel on the server. just Apache, FTP and SSH installed.

What Causes High CPU Usage
I know about high CPU usage and how it works against a webmaster when his host decides to suspend an account over this.

My question is what kinds of scripts usually cause CPU Usage to bulk up.

Basically what the script is doing, that just makes it happen.

I tried Google, but i guess poor choice of keywords .

I also have a few shoutcast services running on my server, but i think ther are fine

Named High Cpu Usage
Since yesterday named started to use more cpu than usual. Techs "refuse" to work with that issue and saying that its's normal. Though all the time had no problems, haven't added hundreds of domains yesterday and there were no changes from my end.

There was one change from techs side however.

"the MX record for the domain was going to localhost, rather than the domain name. I have changed the MX record to domain..."

Anything I should check? Logs doesn't provide anything valuable, just notices.

Mysql Usage: High CPU %, How Do I Find Out Who's Using What
just noticed mysql cpu usage has shot up from its usual 5-10% cpu to 30%+. domains are as normal and no extraordinary php processes.

any way i can tell what users are most heavily running mysql? (as in number queries / slow queries etc?) i know mysqladmin processlist but that only gives me a snapshot, whereas i want to see over 24 hours, who used mysql the most...

CPU Usage HIGH - Spamd Child
I have just moved my sites from shared host to a vps. After several initial problems (cpanel issue, config not set up correctly, memory spikes and sites down every morning due to backup and stats) I thought everything was going to be ok. hmm.

My server load starts off fine first thing (less than 1) then creeps up nearly 1 per hour, ie been 3.5 hours now and it is at 2.57. Sites are ok at the moment but yesterday load got up to nearly 7 and sites were extremely slow.

CPU usage is HIGH for one site and goes up very quickly throughout the day. Yesterday it reached well over 90%. First thing today it was already amber and showing 14%. It is now 70.54% and shows below it :

Top Process %CPU 80.2 spamd child
Top Process %CPU 79.8 spamd child
Top Process %CPU 79.4 spamd child

I have a ticket open and they (Liquid Web) they are not sure what the deal is, but are apparently monitoring it to see if they can isolate the cause of the problem. But that was a couple of days ago and now the ticket is due for closure.

I telephoned them (expensive as I'm in the UK!) and raised my concerns, but was just told that everything looked ok on the vps, cpu usage was in fact not high and to ignore the warnings.

So, I am posting here to see if anybody can help me get to the root of this.

I understand that spamd child is to do with email / spam assassin?

My problem is that this is the first vps I have had and don't have a clue now where to go or what to do.

Anybody understand about spamd child that can explain it to a poor dumb blonde and how to fix it?

Load Is Low CPU Usage Is High
I was wondering is someone can shed some light on a curious situation for me. I am running a linux server (Gentoo) and the CPU usage spikes to 90-100% but the load of the server when viewed by top is only 0.4 - 1.5 (max). The memory is OK with .5 gig free and there is no paging going on. So my question is: Is this server over used or not?

CPanel Server, High CPU Usage From PHP
I just moved from a P4 Dual Core (2mb cache) to a Dual Xeon (512k cache) and everything has gone to sh*t.

I had the server optimized/security hardened (for the most part) and last night, I had a RAM upgrade to 4GB.

As soon as the server came back up after the upgrade, CPU usage was into the mid hundreds. RAM usage is fine....

Presently, I'm showing PHP using a ton of CPU. I tweaked mysql a little bit, and that helped slightly.

Also, last night, I had the DC run diagnostics on the RAM and hard drive. Both check out OK.

Here's the specs:
2x Intel Xeon 2.80GHz
4GB RAM
cPanel
CENTOS Enterprise 5.2 i686
PHP 5.x
MySQL 5.x
Exim

When viewing TOP or status in WHM, php scripts use the most CPU. With average CPU load around 60+

Upgraded Network Port And Now CPU Usage Is Sky High
Today I upgraded my dual opteron dedicated server from a 10mbps port to 100mbps. While the number of apache access have dropped by about a quarter my CPU usage has increased also by about a quarter, my CPU is touching on 95-100% now.

What’s most likely to be the cause?

What’s also interesting is my network port is only showing 20mbps usage, nowhere near the 100mbps its been upgraded to.

Trojan Activity - Running Perl With High CPU Usage, With User Apache
Running programs named Perl with Heavy CPU usage, with the ownership of user apache.

We found the problem on Fedora 3 and Fedora 6.

In our case, it was the result of a Trojan activity.

Quick Solution

Check the cron jobs of user apache
crontab -u apache -e
*/1 * * * * perl /tmp/.tmp/tmpfile
delete the cronjob entry.
Also delete the file /tmp/.tmp/tmpfile
also added "apache" to the file /etc/cron.deny

That's all

Problem and solution in detail....

May Server Crash Due To High Load With Low CPU And RAM Usage
I have server load like 40.

Nothing lags.

Server has RAM usage 20% and CPU usage goes up to 25%

Swap isnt used at all.

Should I be afraid of server crash incase server load goes up to 60 or 80 without ram and cpu usage rising that much?

High Server Load / High Swap / Lots Of Httpd
I have a cPanel server with 4GB RAM

My server hangs time to time, once or twice a day. This is the last status when it happens.

Server Load 75.90 (2 cpus)
Memory Used 92 %
Swap Used 65.78 %

When I was still inside SSH when it happens, the processes I can see inside "top" are a lot of httpd processes.

So I "killall -9 httpd", I had to do it 30~40 times

#killall -9 httpd
#killall -9 httpd
#killall -9 httpd
x 30~40 times until no pid process found & the server load is back to normal.

Before that, I check httpd fullstatus, they look very normal, same goes to what I see inside WHM Apache status & cpu usage status.

At first I thought it was a memory problem after consulting with a server admin, so I replaced all 4GB new ram stick (such a waste)

Cpu Usage... Is It The Same As Cpu Cycles- And Any Good Webhost Monitoring Sites
I'm trying to write an article about webhosting. I've completed most of the article but there are some points I still can't figure out.

a) I'm actually confused about this: is limiting of cpu usage the same as limiting cpu cycles or even cpu throttling? I see these terms mentioned everywhere but they're all quite confusing.

b) And also, where can I find good sites for tracking webhost uptime and with some comprehensive data? I've only found this comprehensive site so far but have failed to find any others: [url]

And any other sites I found have been mediocre.

Server High Load/high Mysql Usage
I have a site that is eating up my server resources and need to know what the best solution for this is. I'm thinking of getting another server just for mysql but do not know what specs the server should be to handle the current traffic/database load and have the site run smoothly without slowing down to a snail's pace.

An alternative is to get another server just for the videos being served and leave the database and html on the current server. This is where I'm stuck and don't know what route to take with this.

My current server stats:

Dual Xeon 5130
4GB RAM
250GB
50 Mbit/sec
CentOS 3.9

Website traffic stats:

15,000 visitors/day
150,000 pageviews/day
Serving videos

I've attached screenshots of top and bandwidth usage per day. Hopefully with this information you could tell me if I need another server or if there are any things I can do to the current server to help things move faster.

High Server Load - Httpd Processes
a topic long time ago that my server load is frequently high.

I'm talking about something like this
Server Load 158.86
Memory Used 28.2 %
Swap Used 99.57 %

[url]

The only way to solve this problem is to identify the load earlier and kill all httpd process. What I did was

#killall -9 httpd
#killall -9 httpd
#killall -9 httpd
x 30~40 times until no pid process found & the server load is back to normal.

On previous thread, I tried to update mysql & php and it works,

Right now again I am experiencing high server load again...

I'm very sure it's caused by httpd but I am still unable to find out the real cause of the problem and which account user is the culprit for causing this high load.

Can someone assist me by telling me where/how to begin with?

CPU Usage
I have been using Blue Host for years, but recently they kept suspending my account due to performance problem.

I was only running a php forum (phpBB3) and a Wordpress blog. They kept mentioning it is not problem with space/bandwidth, but issues with "Running application causing high load", and the mysql queries from phpBB3 are taking too long.

Now I am planning to add a Ruby on Rails application. I am sure it will cost more CPU usage. What should I do? Will a move to VPS hosting solve my problem?

Wordpress CPU Usage
For some reason, one of my clients wordpress blog is using 100% cpu on a php process per page load. To clarify, the first time you load the page it is very slow, and uses 100% cpu for the PHP process and then if you reload the page (while it is going slow) it loads very fast. After that is done the normal PHP usage per page load is roughly 1-4% if that.

I'm guessing something in the coding is looping, but I am unsure. What I do know is 100% cpu usage for one page view initially is insane.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix/resolve this issue?

so far i have found the following

bluehost not exceed %50 for more than 30 Sec.
hostgator %25 for 60 Sec.
webhostingpad %10 for 30 Sec.

what is the % of cpu allowed on your host?

CPU Time Usage
I'm just wondering what exactly "CPU Time" is, I have searched Google and checked Wikipedia but still do not really understand. The main reason this is bugging me is that MySQL on our database server seems to have a very high "CPU Time" usage.

This is the top part of the output from "top", with MySQL shown:

We're Exceeding CPU Usage
Some friends and I have started a Movie Site at [url].

We currently are averaging around 14,000 Unique Visitors per month.

We run wordpress with several plugins, a flash player for podcasts and an image rotator.

We have lots of bandwidth and don't have a problem there but we have a big problem with CPU usage.

If we enable the WP and Super Cache plugin then the site pretty much instantly gets the Exceeding CPU Usage.

We are considering switching hosts (we are currently with HostMonster) but I am unsure of who to switch to. With only 14,000 Unique visitors we won't make much at all in advertising and since this is a hobby most of us are unable to put large amounts of cash into hosting.

here is the error page but I'm sure you all have seen it before...

This Account Has Exceeded Its CPU Quota

Please contact this site's webmaster.

Wait a few minutes and use your browser's "Back" button or click here to try again.

If you are the webmaster, your account may have gotten this error for one or more of the following reasons:

* Your account has used more than its share of the cpu in the past 60 second sliding window.
* Your account has too many concurrent processes running simultanously.
* Your account has consumed too much memory.
* Your site was recently very busy trying to run inefficient scripts.

The solution would be to optimize your applications to use less CPU.
Adding appropriate indeces to your SQL tables can often help reduce CPU.
Using static .html documents instead of painful .php scripts will practically eliminate CPU usage.

CPU Usage (PHP)
For about a couple of days (no configs were changed) I am experiencing high cpu usage from time to time.

At this moment and what I can see is this:

Sites are using low cpu resources, top process is mysql + 1-2 php defuncts replacing each other, after that - httpd requests
Something happens and php are starting to use more cpu thant it should. Cpu top usage shows all php files in all accounts replacing each other (index files, scripts there are like wordpress, forums, etc).

Server crashes... Or I kill all php processes, restart apache and it goes back to normal mode again.

I had the same issue months ago, just cpu usage was even more agressive and much often. After days of checking, I've found that it was
Curl and/or Curlwrappers which were cauisng that. After recompiled apache without them (left curlssl only), cpu load was always stable.

How Can I Reduce My CPU Usage
Last year my web host stated that my site was over utilizing allowed resources for my plan. Specifically, they state that I was overusing the CPU. At the time, I had to upgrade my plan in order to stay online. I would like to move to a new host, but the prospective hosts are all suggesting a dedicated server because of my CPU usage. I don't want to pay that kind of money, so I would really like to curb the CPU problem. Does anyone know how to reduce the CPU of a Wordpress blog? I tried posting this question over at Wordpress.org, but I haven't received a single reply.

CPU Usage Spikes
Ive had a server for a while now, and had a backup hdd installed recently.

There seems to be CPU spikes happening from time to time up to 35%
Usually it sits on 0.17 - 0.80

But suddenly its been jumping around.

I have no idea where its coming from, as I cant check it in time.

Its a new problem thats just come up, and Im not so sure what it may be, as I havent got any new accounts on it.

I do get bounced emails from mailman for some reason, and mail queue is usually large, but server was generally cleaned up from it being abused.

Cpu Usage And Bandwidth
In your professional opinion, does a simple shared account with 20+ gigs of bandwidth have enough to handle a website that, for a week out of a month, might hit about 5 or so thousand visits (to a single web page with mysql connection) per hour?

The traffic wouldn't last at that rate for more than a few days. but I want to make sure even a basic good web host with a shared account can handle this. Or is a must that I hit a dedicated server?

Linux, bsaic dual intel set-up like any other seems to be what I will have. Not sure about ram, but I am on a reseller account and the only one that will have real traffic.

High Memory Usage
I purchased a VPS at wiredtree to upload a site that is in the works so that it would be "ready" once it was launched (had it sitting on a shared server before). So I have this domain on there, as well as a small wordpress blog. In total I'm get a very miniscule trickle of visitors to these websites (as they are not officially launched), around 100 visits per day, many of which are only 1 pageview visits.

My problem is, my server is already idling over its memory limit of 256mb. This is causing major slowdowns, and processes like cpanel are constantly be killed and I can't login.

Does anyone have any idea what is causing my high memory usage? I just can't image that the visitors I am getting are doing much, as for the majority of the day I have absolutely no one viewing my domains, yet my memory usage is still over the limit.

Wiredtree support says its up to me to optimize my msql/php scripts etc for low mem usage, but I don't see how this will help when there is no one using them in the first place.

Optimize Memory/CPU Usage
I have a VPS w/ KnownHost on CPanel and 256mb of RAM (I know, bad mix). It's the newer CPanel that is VPS optimized.

There are 3 websites on it and get < 500 hits/day total on average.

Right now I am at 128mb used/127mb free. It seems higher than it should/needs to be.

CPU Usage 100% On Backup?
I have a server with high specs Xeon 3220 16 Cpu and 16 Gb of ram and 2 X 250 Gb HDD.

my server normal CPU and mem usage:

PHP Code:

top - 04:47:19 up 9 days,  3:57,  1 user,  load average: 0.71, 0.57, 0.72Tasks: 323 total,   1 running, 322 sleeping,   0 stopped,   0 zombieCpu(s):  1.5%us,  0.6%sy,  0.0%ni, 97.6%id,  0.2%wa,  0.0%hi,  0.0%si,  0.0%stMem:  16632188k total,  6030980k used, 10601208k free,   160712k buffersSwap:  2096440k total,   151228k used,  1945212k free,  2810308k cached

when server backuping I have 100% Cpu usage and 99% mem usage like this top Process:

PHP Code:

Top Process    %CPU 126    /usr/bin/md5sum /backup/cpbackup/daily/sullo.tar.gzTop Process    %CPU 106    gzipTop Process    %CPU 99.1    gzip

what is the reason of this problem?

how can I limit Cpu and mem usage for backuping (GZIP)?

how to solv this problem and make backup use less than 50% of my server resource?
