Which MySQL Utf8 Charset Should I Use

May 20, 2007

to change a mysql database and all its tables to a utf8 charset and collation, however I'm not sure specifically which one I should use. We are currently using latin1_general_ci.

On a forum I've noticed that in a couple of posts I made, sometimes characters such as the euro sign €, and the German ß get converted to question marks.

Being an English forum we don't often have members use these characters but we'd like them displayed correctly when they are.

I don't really know much about character sets and such, but I understand that they contain different characters and treat them differently in comparisons and sorts etc. So which of the following should I be using?
utf8_bin
utf8_general_ci
utf8_unicode_ci

I was leaning towards unicode, but I don't know what the differences between them are. Can anyone advise us on what to use?

This is for MySQL 4.1.22 btw.

I'm certain the problem is not with my browser, and the characters are typed from the keyboard, not copied and pasted from word docs. A charset is specified by a meta tag in the header too.

Convert All Mysql Tables To Utf8

Jul 8, 2008

I have a vbulletin (3.7.2) board with many mods installed (nearly 70) without a problem.

However, upon installing one new mod I got a database error stating:

MySQL Error : Illegal mix of collations (latin1_swedish_ci,IMPLICIT) and (latin1_general_ci,IMPLICIT) for operation '='

How do I change ALL tables in one shot (or sql query via phpmyadmin) from the two different collations to utf8?

Also, is utf8 suggested or better than latin1?

Mysql Database Dump (150mb) Utf8

Jun 9, 2008

recently I had problems with backing up my ~150mb database through PHP. And I know some people are backing their databases to a dump file through terminal.

My database contains UTF-8 and other characters. I have tried simply dumping with mysqldump but I doesn't seem to work, when restoring all the characters are messed up.

Is there any command to tell that the database is UTF-8?

Plesk 12.x / Windows :: MySQL 5.5 - Unknown OS Charset

Sep 29, 2014

We have a special application that works on 3 servers, 1 of them is main server and others are mysql replicate servers basically used for generating reports or backups...

Server 1 - Centos 6.5/Mysql 5.5/Plesk 12
Server 2 - Centos 6.5/Mysql 5.5/Plesk 11
Server 3 - Server 2008 R2/Mysql 5.5/Plesk 12

Server 1->Server 2 replication works perfectly
Server 1->Server 3 replication sometimes fails with character issues (our database and tables use utf8_turkish_ci), when I tried to investigate this issue by logging in to mysql on Server 3 right after connection i saw "Unknown OS Character Set 'cp857' Switching to default character set latin1" and i am guessing that my replication issues are also related to this issue. I tried adding below settings to my.ini at "C:Program Files (x86)ParallelsPleskDatabasesMySQLdata"

[mysqld]
init_connect='SET collation_connection = utf8_turkish_ci'
init_connect='SET NAMES utf8'
character-set-server=utf8
collation-server=utf8_turkish_ci
skip-character-set-client-handshake
[mysql]
default-character-set=utf8
default-collation=utf8_turkish_ci
[client]
default-character-set=utf8
default-collation=utf8_turkish_ci

but didnt change anything, i was wondering if these settings were wrong so i tried them at my local wamp installation which i was having same error, but error was gone after adding them to my.ini so i think settings are alright...

Charset On FC5

Feb 18, 2008

I own and run the server I am having issues with FC5 running. it has been online with no issues. Until this new client.

I have a new client moving his sites to my servers. The issue is the sites have text in it that are not displaying correctly. When you view them through your browser or if I view them on the server with nano and look a the code, some characters are all messed up.

here is an example. on the websitethis is how its supposed to look.

“0” but when you view it with Firefox it looks like this 0.

if I download the source and view it in word pad it is fine, and looks as it should I have change my charsets around even have the same charsets installed on his server installed on mine. I have commented out default charset in apache to let the browser choose but to no avail. My server has no problem showing Chinese text on web pages or anything else so i do not understand why this is happening. If anyone has any ideas please let me know, this is very frustrating as I have never had this issue before.

Installed MySQL In /usr/local/mysql But Error In /var/lib/mysql

Jan 21, 2007

I installed the MySQL binary packages in /usr/local/mysql/ after removing the MySQL RPM package. MySQL is functioning when I executed /usr/local/mysql/bin/safe_mysqld. I reinstalled MySQL before I installed PHP. When I used a PHP script to access a MySQL database, it outputs an error:

Code:
Warning: mysqli::mysqli() [function.mysqli-mysqli]: (HY000/2002): can't connect to local mysql server through socket /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock in index.php on line 2
However, I installed MySQL in /usr/local/mysql, not in /var/lib/mysql. How do I fix MySQL?

How To Restore Mysql Databases From /var/lib/mysql/user_database/ Files Only

Feb 11, 2008

I recently had a harddrive failure and luckliy I can still access certain directories on this failed drive. I can still access the /var/lib/mysql/ directory which holds all the users databases and have backed all these up separately using tar.

Now what I need to know is how do you restore these database files to another server? I tried simply untar'ing one of these to the new servers /var/lib/mysql/ direcotry and it stuffed Mysql up - it went offline. I had to get a cpanel tech to bring Mysql back online.

how can I get these database files to fully work on a new server?

MySQL Monitor Shows MySQL As Offline When It's Not

Jan 15, 2007

I've been racking my brains with this problem for the last couple of months and have made zero progress. I've asked a lot of people if they know what might be wrong here, but none of them have any idea.

Basically, the problem is that any sort of service monitor I put on my server shows MySQL as being down/offline, even when I know for sure it's up and running perfectly fine. All other services report a green light.

The mysqld service is running on port 3306, which is open both inbound and outbound on my APF config, so as far as I can tell it's nothing to do with the firewall (I won't rule that out though).

The other odd thing is that MySQL shows a green light within WHM, but not anywhere else.

Does anyone know what might be wrong here? Am I missing something entirely fundamental and obvious?

Uninstall MySQL 3.23 And Install MySQL 5.0

Mar 28, 2007

I've rented a dedicated server that comes with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 and MySQL 3.23 but I need at least MySQL 4.1 or higher. My knowledge about GNU/Linux is very limited, so I've read some documents at mysql.com and now I think I have to follow these steps:

1. Uninstall MySQL 3.23 with this command line:
shell> rpm -e mysql-*.rpm

2. Install the server and client RPMs of MySQL 5.0:
shell> rpm -i MySQL-server-VERSION.i386.rpm
shell> rpm -i MySQL-client-VERSION.i386.rpm

Upgrade From MySQL 4 To MySQL 5

Jun 3, 2008

I'm trying to upgrade from MySQL 4 to MySQL 5 for performance reasons. MySQL 4 was working great so I decided to just go ahead and upgrade to MySQL 5 via CPanel. The upgrade appeared to go fine however I now get this error when trying to start MySQL.

/usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)' Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' exists! mysql has failed, please contact the sysadmin (result was "Warning, no valid mysql.sock file found.mysql has failed").

I went ahead and did a forced re-install of MySQL 5, but that didn't help. Apache has been updated as well since then, but that did no good, and the MySQL process isn't starting at all.

Its CENTOS with PHP5.

MySQL = How Much RAM

Oct 22, 2008

I'm trying to understand, generally, on a Hybrid VPS with 1gig guaranteed/4gig burst- for small sites that might be installing stuff like Wordpress, a Forum, Joomla!, etc., how many MySQL databases this system can support.

I realize traffic would be a major factor but for discussion sake lets assume an average of 50 users for each db with a peak of 100 users.

Just trying to get a 'rule of thumb'. Wondering also, how much RAM (resources?) an idle db consumes.
