Which CPU To Consider For DB Intensive Website
Aug 2, 2008
my client a dedicated server which could handle the following things.
1). Intensive DB queries done from many operators for custom project.
2).DB when info process completes, Generates a PDF which would be upto 10MB in size.and also runs MAPLAB Applications.
3). should be able to run back-up's or please suggest an alternative to always have a copy of recent data.
4). pro-active scanning on Incoming FTP content for Viruses. (is it possible ?)
Considering softlayer with:
either
Single Processor Quad Core Xeon 3220 - 2.40GHz (Kentsfield) - 2 x 4MB cache
8 GB RAM
+ 147GB SA-SCSI 10K RPM
OR Preferring
Dual Processor Quad Core Xeon 5335 - 2.00GHz (Clovertown) - 2 x 8MB cache
8 GB FB-DIMM Registered 533/667
+ 147GB SA-SCSI 10K RPM

I'm working on a new project that involves some heavy data processing in the preparation stage. As an example, one of the setup jobs is now running on a P4-3.0HT desktop at 100% CPU and I estimate it'll be finished in just under a week! Memory and i/o usage are minimal but it's extremely CPU-hungry.
There are other similar jobs to follow and some correlation between the number of cpu cycles and the quality of results so I foresee an ongoing need for computing power for at least a few months.
Viable options are to continue running my own hardware (probably supplementing the P4 with something a bit newer), Amazon EC2 or a cheap dedicated server - I can get a good handle on the cost and performance of each of these.
But I wonder if I'd get more bang per buck from a few VPSs? Some of the VPS benchmark results are spectacular so I suspect the answer could be yes, in the short term anyway. But I don't want to hog the host-node's CPU to the point where it degrades other users' performance or gets my account shut down... Then again, judging by the performance of the VPSs I've used for hosting the node seems to have a lot of spare CPU available...
So (finally) to the questions: Am I crazy to even consider this? If not, which technology would be most suitable? (I'm thinking Xen because of its reputation for better isolation.) Has anyone else done anything similar?

I have two VPS's which run a single MySQL intensive site. The first VPS runs cPanel and has about 50 databases, 200mb each. Second has another 30 databases, of the same size.
What would be the best method to backup this website daily?
At Current;
I use automysqlbackup to backup all the databases at midnight (this crashes the VPS's for about 10 minutes each night). This dumps each one into a zipped file.
Then the rsync copies the changed files (forum attachmenets, cpanel changes etc(whole server)) to an off site location.
Are there any easier ways to do this? The databases are most important!

I own a couple of servers xeon setups. All use cPanel/WHM.
A client yesterday asked if we could have ffmpeg-php installed on the server so that they could run phpfox.
I have heared ffmpeg is resource intensive? Will it make a big difference on dual core server? Should I install ffmpeg-php or risk losing a client?
If I should install ffmpeg-php I have been having trouble doing so, can anyone help me with this.

We were on shared hosting until we were asked to move off due to our database using a lot of the CPU - how much, we dont know.
Anyway, moved to a 1GB Hyper-V VPS, seems like we have one core of an E5420 but presume the server is shared between 12 people.
When our ASP application runs, the MSSQL server reaches 100% CPU and the website performs slower than the shared server we were on.
Where can we go from here? Seems like going from shared to a Dual/Quad Core Dedicated Server is a large jump and a massive jump in price.
What about a host with a high performance dedicated server for MSSQL shared between customers.

Calling on all hosting and server experts here. (If you're not an expert, still feel free to take an educated stab at this. But please leave out total made up answers or foolish answers like "Have LittleJoeShmoe Hosting services do it all for $9.99/month".)
Scenario:
If you knew or were planning on developing a site that you knew would generate millions to tens of millions of page views a day, how would you go about supporting a site of such traffic? The site would not serve up videos, but the average page size would contain up to 75-100kB. It would incorporate databases (user logins, accounts, user submitted content, server side scripting, CMS, etc.)
Don't assume anything. Don't assume you have too little or too much money. Just, what would you plan out to accomodate such a scenario?
What hosting companies would you use? Would you do it in-house and build your own datacenter? Farm out the server management? How much would it cost to implement your plan? What platform would you recommend for a site to handle this much traffic?

If I type google.com in my address bar, it forwards me to www.google.com. This is not happening for my website right now. I think its a good idea to do this, since then search engines will have only 1 main URL for the website to index.
My question is:
How do I implement this? I think this may involve mucking with CNAME settings...

I use Ian Lloyd's book and that's where I found out about this forum. Looks like a great forum.
I downloaded Fliezilla FTP and I'm trying to transfers files from my computer onto an angelfire web site.
Filezilla asks for a server address and I put in the URL address that I registered with angelfire. It then asks me for an administration password, and I put in my password to the angelfire site. I keep getting: Error: Connection to server lost...
Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong here? I would like to use Filezilla to upload my files (web pages) to the angelfire site.

I have a website which is currently hosted with streamline.net on their shared msql 11 server.
We have had several issues with them over the last few weeks where someone is using most of the server and slowing everyone elses sites down so much so they crash.
This week and weekend are my busiest time of the year (I sell fancy dress) and my site it totally unuseable.
We have phoned them and they have done nothing except ask us for a log which we have provided for short periods of time.
The down time has now got so bad that I have had only 2 sales today. I estimate I am losing approx 400 per day at the moment due to this problem.
Is there anything that I can do urgently to prevent my business from being killed by someone else.

So I'm interviewing with a company and when I typed in the URL to their website, I was met with a nasty surprise: a "hacked by so and so" message! However, after looking closer, I see that I had accidentally appended a period (".") to the end of the domain name, for example: http://www.example.com./
When I removed the period, the site appeared as normal. I don't know anything about the server other than it's IIS. Is there anything I can suggest to them when I go in to interview? I'd like to point this out to them; it may even help my chances at landing the job! (It's not related to networking, though.)

This is probably a pretty complicated answer so please forgive me as I'm a newbie to making my own ecommerce website.
What steps are needed to protect/prevent one's site from being hacked? I have domain privacy (on WhoIs) but I feel this isn't enough.

I want to have my email and website going to different servers:
At the moment i have it setup so that the nameserver records point to the ip of the website. That means that both site and mail go to the server where i host my site. I have then set up an mx record to point the mail to another server...
however can i make this split at the start?.. i.e. from the domain registar? can i set up an A record to point to the website and an MX record for the mail? instead of pointing them both to the website and then redirecting the mail to another server?

Just this week, I believe one of my site has been hacked...or potentially my whole server! When accessing the website (a vBulletin forum), instead of going to the main page, we get a screen that looks like Window's "My Computer" and there is a scan running. Firefox has blocked the site for suspicion.
I am stumped. Where to begin? I have full SSH access to my server (after rebooting it). Thank you in advance.
Server: CentOS Linux 4.3

I want to be able to sell t-shirts and caps on my site, or at least advertising. Any ways to use current news and photos that are free or inexpensive?

I've discovered that a site of mine has being completely copied
The sites are in a different country
[url]
[url]
The original site, that is still currently under construction with a lot of copy, rewriting and pages still have
[url]
Now, I don't mind someone taking inspiration or borrowing ideas. I'll admit as a web designer I have 1000's of book marks of sites that I've liked and will look at for ideas and inspiration, but I don't just download and put up.
Now as the sites are in a separate country I don't know yet if it is worth all the hassle as our customer base are separate, but I presume that having identical content means that google ranking could be damaged?

I registered my domain with domain.com several weeks ago. Then, when I tried to get web hosting services! but I had the worst experience over the internet by professional internet company.
Anyway, the issue is not that, I did lost my money with this company but I did manage to purchase web hosting services with another web hosting company (webhostingpad.com).
However, now I am stuck with how do I manage to activate my web address at (domain.com) to be directed to my website at (webhostingpad.com).
I tried both companies support with no respond at all.
So, My question is;
What is needed to do now:
How do I activate my web address over the internet?
How to make this address point to my website at webhostingpad.com?
How to make my address shows in all search engines?

Whats the benefit of putting up your own web hosting server in the company to host your website?
Obviously its going to be more economical and Im sure there are plenty of documentation online on how to do this.
why most people wont go with this approach and rather find a hosting company to do this for them instead.
