View 14 RepliesWe are too small needswise for even a half rack. Even a 1/4 rack would be overkill but nontheless, options in the area are limited to even *owned-enclosed* 1/4 racks from the colo facility itself.
The local facilities that would fit our needs spacewise are probably going to fit this in a full rack with space that we purchase against.
My concern is the security of *our* -- the customer equipment. Read alot of horror stories and would hate to end up one day finding out that whatever provider we choose was behind on bills, etc and we have X days to grab equipment from the facility, etc.
I am looking to colo SAN equipment, which is almost a triple digit box.
I have a big performance problem with my IMAP server. In my inbox I have emails accumulated over several years (mailing lists, autoreplies, etc...). I have tens of thousands of emails in my inbox, and it's just too slow. I'd like to know what IMAP server you suggest. It has to be something that indexes messages also, as searches are very slow.

I have been reviewing a lot of different data-centers and networks, and everybody seems to use different bandwidth providers. Is there any consensus on who the best (Top 5 maybe?) carriers are? According to WikiPedia.org, there are currently only 9 "true" Tier-1 carriers:
Quote:
AOL
AT&T
Cogent
Global Crossing
Level 3
Verizon Business
NTT Communications
Qwest
SAVVIS
Sprint

what's the fastest way to transfer 50gb of files from old server to new?
I tried using cpanel's backup to transfer a backup through ftp to my new server, but it stopped at 3gb.

I dont have physical access to my server, just root access via ssh.
What is the fastest server Dual Xeon 3.06(HT) or Pentium D 3Ghz ?
to select the fastest one?
Dual Xeon 3.06 with HT
512K cache [1MB total on 2 processors]
533FSB
2GB Ram
Pentium D 3 Ghz (Dual Core)
2MB cache
800FSB
2GB Ram
==================================
My second question is,
Pentium D 3GHz mean
1.5GHz X 2 = 3GHz or
3GHz X 2 = 6GHz ?
I'm working on a plan for restoring my whole Plesk server fast in a worst case scenario. Which will never happen hopefully.
The backup is a full backup done by the Backup Manager in Plesk. It lies on a remote FTP server.
Right now I'm fetching the whole backup directory with wget while in the background the Plesk Installation is running. These actions take about 1h to complete.
Afterwards I would restore with /usr/local/psa/bin/pleskrestore.
Is there a better way? For example installing Plesk directly out of a full backup?

Ive done a few whois searches on some of our competitors websites. In the registrar details it has our competitors name as the Registrar and as the nameservers. How can we do this? so for example if someone did a whois on our clients websites, they would see something like this:
Registrar:
OurCompany Ltd [Tag = OurCompany]
Name servers:
ns1.OurCompany.co.uk
ns2.OurCompany.co.uk
Do we need our own nameservers and dedicated server? We've just bought an account with openSRS so we buy our domains through them (if that makes a difference).

I was wondering if you guys would recommend a hosting company to use a VPS? I am a web designer and as a side job i am thinking of selling reseller accounts for very cheap prices. I am mainly concerned mainly because of the RAM most VPS have . I mean is 248 and 512 mb really ok? Also , anyone have an insight on "burst ram"? What does this mean?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI will be starting up a new hosting company that will offer free and paid hosting. My question is, should I start out with a reseller, and move on as needed? I was simply thinking of starting out with a VPS, so I could simply skip the reseller part. I read elsewhere that some simply get a reseller and get another reseller when they need it.
What path should I choose. I could always get a VPS later on, but why not get one now? This is one reason I ask, because since reading about the reseller post, I am now split on this.
To note, have used a reseller before, but not a VPS. I do want to eventually learn to run a VPS, so this could be the time to do so.
