Is There Anything Like A CDN For Dynamic Content

Apr 13, 2009

Is there anything that takes the concept of a CDN (localised content delivery), but applies it to dynamic stuff like PHP and databases, syncing across worldwide servers as necessary? It'd be nice to deliver the entire site in a localised manner.

I'd imagine Google does something like this for their own sites, and maybe other large companies too — but I have no idea if such a technology exists in the consumer space.

I can see it being a logistical nightmare having to keep all versions of the database in sync, so it wouldn't surprise me if nothing like this exists.

Protecting Content

Mar 14, 2008

My company provides various reports and dynamic website content to clients whose websites we design and host as well as to clients who have their sites designed and hosted elsewhere. We do not want people to be able to easily link to our content or bring it up in an iframe or whatever unless they are a paid subscriber. We would like to be able to limit the content to the domains of paying clients and keep it from displaying elsewhere. Note also that out of several reports, publications and content we offer, clients can mix and match, subscribe to just one element or all of them (The subscription levels are managed by us on the back end.)

Currently we have a system that is built in Perl/Postgres SQL and it is problematic(constantly failing and not very secure) Also it requires that the content be loaded into an iframe on the client's site or linked directly. We would like a solution that is PHP-based and can talk to our existing database. We would also like to be able to display the content on the page without an iframe so it is more search engine friendly, etc.

An off-the-shelf solution would be preferable if one is available - and we like to support the open source community.

Pre GZIP Content

Feb 2, 2008

I am aware that modern-day browsers support decoding GZIP-encoded content, such as a GZIP-encoded JavaScript file.

Apache supports delivering content like so, however, the server-side must generate the file, then compress, and then deliver.

So I was wondering, is it possible to GZIP the files ahead of time and then allow Apache to deliver them in their compressed state.

I am planning to do this only for static content (images, css and javascript).

Content Limitation With Vps

Aug 29, 2007

I know, it could depend on the company, where you have your vps. So it is a general question. Do I have to take care, which content I put on the machine, assuming that it is _not_ illegal, at least in the European Union? So I do not mean illegal mp3 or warez.

But what about erotic things. For sure, I do _not_ mean hardcore-pornography, but I think of erotic paintings, which you can see in Europe at prime time on tv and these paintings got prizes already, while in other parts of the world, it would be banned.

So do I have to check this exactly before a sign-up?

Looking For A Host That Allows Adult Content

Nov 14, 2008

Looking for a host that allows adult content

I've been looking for a host for a few hours now and would like to get some opinions on what people think of the following companies or what other companies I should be looking at.

altushost
godaddy
1and1
hostgator

these 4 all allow "pornographic" material

requirements:

500mb-2gb space
20-100gb monthly bandwidth (option to scale this would be best)
php 4 or 5
sql (2 databases)
ftp
ssh (not required, but would like it)
5-10 a month, payable yearly

Webhost For Adult Content?

Sep 30, 2008

Does anyone know of a good web host that allows adult content? No porn or anything hardcore, basically it's just half-nude/topless/erotic posing pictures.

I will definitely need a web host that allows a lot of bandwidth, I'm actually doing this for someone who just got in the cover of Penthouse. So.. I'm sure there will be a lot of traffic.

VPS Recommendation For Adult Content

Aug 24, 2008

Something less then US$ 150 for the start and an option to move to a full blown (4 Cores, 4GB) dedicated server later would be optimal.

Requirements:
1000 GB Transfer
10 GB Disk
1024 GB Memory
Plesk Panel

There will also be download links to copyright protected material but this are only links, there is no copyright infringement on the server itself which is absolutely legal at least in Europe.

Legal Adult Content

May 24, 2008

I have been looking for adult hosting services. Of the businesses I have found that do allow adult hosting, I have seen one stipulation. "Legal adult content". I'm not quite sure on what this means. Does it pertain to the obvious, like no child porn, bestiality, etc. Or is there legalities to the access of the adult content? Though I live in the US, I was not raised nor educated here, and thus not aware of the details here.

All I wish to host is a general content forum where my members can have a section to post 18+ pornography such as you would see in any regular adult video store. I plan to have this in an invite only section of the forum as to keep the content inaccessible to under 18 year olds. I believe this should be within the requirements of legal adult content.

Anyone who knows the details of the term "Legal adult content", could you please clear this up for me?

Currently, if I click a PDF link on my site/server, it opens a dialogin FF to open or save. I would like it to force the browser to open it.

There is a ton of info out there to force it to download but nothing to force it to open.

My browser does have the appropriate plugins installed. It works on other sites.

Which Content Management System (CMS)

Th website I will be setting up will be of the same genre as the following website startutor.sg. Therefore, I am wondering what CMS to use.

I thought of designing the website using AI or PSD and asked someone to code them (not sure of the terminology used) for me as I don't know anything about CSS, HTML etc.

Illegal Content Scanner

May 20, 2009

While reading a lot of posts and blogs about hosting, I just wanted to ask if someone has an idea on how to find files with illegal content.

I just tried a few bash scripts, but if there are a few thousand files, most of them stop working or produce server loads that stop the whole server.

Is there any software already out there or any script to scan the content on server for phrases?

Content Management For Dummies

I'm investigating quick and easy web hosts for our neighborhood web site. We don't need anything fancy, but the most important feature would be where (once I set up the site) simpletons like the board members can upload new documents, articles, contact info, etc.
Kind of like a SharePoint site where you don't need a web master to make changes (I have better things to do...).

Content Type Setup

Aug 4, 2009

I have the following problem with character encoding. We use utf8 in our database and generate html pages where content type is also set to utf8. If I check the source code it really shows utf8 in the head section.

However if I check header of the server answer (Note, this is not in the html) it reports an iso-8859-2 content type and it seems the browser takes this value and not the value from the html head.

How can I set the content type of the server header to utf8?

Treatment Of Explicit Content

Aug 4, 2008

I am planning to develop an online role-playing game in which people play characters involved in intimate relationship with each other. The exact content of the game is not defined; it's a research project for me. It's possible that the game will be entirely text-based, or maybe it won't. I need a hosting (VPS/VDS) that will host the game itself plus all the needed stuff (development blog etc.)

I have general understanding of the current state of offers in VPS hosting market, however I'm totally unaware of hosting providers' position towards such explicit sites.

What can I expect from general hosting provider in regards to the nature of my project:

a) usual hosting provider doesn't mind explicit content

b) usual hosting provider doesn't allow explicit content, but I may find one that doesn't mind

c) usual hosting provider will never allow explicit content; I'll have to find a shady "pron" hosting provider

Does it depend if my site will or will not contain images of explicit nature?

CMS/Forum/Premium Content

Jul 28, 2008

I am currently working on a site which has a series of tutorials on (videos, pdfs and html content.) I have not actually written a line of code for the site yet, as I want to make sure that I can provide great content as well as a nice site.

Anyway the idea is that users land on my site, can view the free tutorials without having to sign up. However to access other tutorials, users are required to sign up and pay a (very small) premium membership. The tutorials are to be sold per tutorial, so a user can buy access to one at a time.

eg

User buys tutorials for topic 'apples' and user then has unlimited access to the entire 'apples' package - videos, pdfs etc.
If the user then decides to purchase the topic 'pears' they then also have unlimited access to that topic.

As well as providing the content, I would also like to provide a forum. Ideally users would have a single sign up for the site, so they can then buy topics and use the forum. It would also be slicker if the user only had one log-in form for the whole site.

I have been thinking about ways of implementing this and have come up with the following:

1) Use a static site for some simple static pages - eg about us, home, contact us etc. and just link from the main site to the forum. In the forum i could have restricted access to certain sub-forums and just manually change the access once i receive payments [unless there is a simple way to automate this?]

2) Use a CMS which has forum module and a restricted access module

Ideally I would like to have all of the processes automated and use the CMS, but is there any other methods that people can suggest? Also can anyone recommend a CMS with these abilities? I have looked at Joomla, and have seen that it has a module for the payment part, but it looks like a lot of mucking around to get the forum integrated properly.

Does anyone know if you can set up a forum software which you can just point to a database where it will get the user information that it needs for a member?

Feel free to post any thoughts on my set up, I read a couple of posts below that a guy is looking to do a similar thing, but don't worry my content is very specific and is nothing to do with computers.

Uncanny Content Theft

Jul 5, 2007

Recently i took a windows dedicated server. I am facing some strange problem that i never heard before. My site is : somex.com developed in ASP. I am hosting it in my dedicated server. When i am checking through copyscape.com i found some strange url somey.com has the interface same as my site.. & all of my content is displaying these.

Looking like an exact clone. If i update a content page in my site .. it is getting updated directly there also.. I am really surprised & confused with this. All did he changed in the site is " he is using his own adsense publisher ID "...

All of those site urls are looking like this : [url]
Check these uncanny symobals in url = ?l=

Previously my hosting provider used to block this domain... Now i took a dedicated server with plesk. I got the IP address of that site but i don't know how to block it using plesk or remote desktop ..Just give me an idea if you can.. i will try to resolve the issue.

While iam doing research on this topic i got this url :[url]
It seems the same issue but i do not have .htaccess fine in my ftp.. i never used it.
