VERISIGN

Feb 4, 2007

ouu omg ahhh what should i use for ssl thawte or verisign... maybe it doesnt matter...?what? did he just say. yeah thats right thawte and versign are one in the same well actually verisign owns thawte and they have as of DEC 1999. yeah verisign is huge. they own 2 of the 13 root nameservers the one for .com and the one for .net. they own jambster. they sold network soloutions in 2003 why? who the hell knows.

they are as of may 2006 in talks to aquire geo trust. OMG MONOPOLY WHERES CONGRESS WHEN WE NEED THEM.

verisign SSL goes for 500+ a year now a days. think about it... IPv4 can have up to 4,294,967,296 ip address lets say around 7000 are web stores. the 3 leading companies are owned by verisign then lets say they only charge 300 when the real costs are around 1,000 or so. 7000 SSL certs at 300 dollars each is $2,100,000.

they are out of control they even had a network hardware/software that would take anyones mistyped domain names like if you did www.hellokittyy.com notice 2 y's (im a guy i just needed an example) it would redirect you to www.versign.com/somebullshitthing with a bunch of their promotional ad's this basicly meant that by doing this any domain .com or .net that wasnt owned and registered by someone versign technical owned! they owned all domains not yet registered. ICANN stepped in the organization the US government set to over see the internet and verisign had the balls to sue them. serriously i want to file a complaint in court over their monopoly.

update! not to the post but to what ive typed im to lazy to go back i just looked and 1 year sll for verisign is $399. and looking at this article at: [url] if versign aquired geo trust they would control... 72.1 percent of the SSL Market... this makes microsoft look like the good guys.

Fake Verisign E-mail Going Around

Feb 9, 2007

I as well as several of our customers have received the following e-mail today. It appears to be a fake e-mail being sent out from security.admin@verisign.com

The e-mail reads:

"Dear FDIC valued Members

Regarding our new security regulations, as a part of our yearly maintenance we have provided a security guard script in the attachment.

So, to secure your websites, please use the attached file and (for UNIX/Linux Based servers) upload the file "guard.php" in: "./public_html" or (for Windows Based servers) in: "./wwwroot" in your site.

If you do not know how to use it, you can use the following instruction:

For Unix/Linux or Windows based websites that use PHP/CGI/PERL/ASP:
1) Download the attachment named "guard.php"
2) Login to your site Control panel.
3) Open "File Manager" window.
4) Go through "Public_html" or "htdocs" (for UNIX/Linux Based servers), but for Windows Based server, please Go through "wwwroot" directory.
5) Choose "Upload Files"
6) Upload the file "guard.php"
7) Check its URL too [url], if it is ok

Thank you for using our services and products. We look forward to providing you with a unique and high quality service.

[url]

There is an attached file called guard.php -- I've attempted to read it, but it appears to be compiled. At this time I am unsure of what the file actually does. Has anyone else received a similar e-mail? Does anyone know what the guard.php file actually does?
