Softlayer: Intermittent "slow Down" Every Few Minutes

Hi there,

Firstly, I want to say that I signed up with Softlayer because I heard they had better support than EV1. If that's the case, EV1 must be really horrible.

That being said, I've had an issue with my server every since I got it from them a few days ago. I moved a bunch of high traffic sites that use PHP and MySQL on a dual core dual processor server with 2 gigs of ram and a scsi 10k disk.

It is running Plesk 8 (which I theorize 'could' be the problem).

I am not stating it is a hardware problem or a software problem because I have no idea what the problem is. Here are the symptoms:

- Every few minutes all my PHP and MySQL sites begin to run very slow. It takes about 10 seconds before a page is loaded.

- During this time, sites that do not use MySQL and PHP seem to run fast, but perhaps a little slower than normal.

- When i attempt to log into SSH during these moments, it pauses on the screen with the black cursor and waits and takes about 30 seconds to log in.

- When I log in, or when I am already logged in and I view the load and memory usage during these times, there is no correlation between the cpu usage or memory usage and the slow downs

- They occur all day and all night.

- When these moments do not occur, the sites are all blazingly fast.

- Load is rarely ever above 1

- I have MySQL and PHP running on the same box.

- I have disabled any possible Plesk cron jobs including drweb and the backup cron that runs every 15 mintues. However, I have manually run it and tested the server and it does not cause any slow down.

- One cron job I have on one of the sites I host (http://www.perfectpeople.net) updates a new image every 25 minutes. This certainly does not cause the problem, and recently two images have shown up not found but the db is updated so you see that image not found error. This has never occurred before and I theorize this is the result of the same issue.

---------

None of these issues occurred with any previous servers. Softlayer techs keep telling me everything is fine, repeating over and over that it loads fine on their side, being completely unhelpful.

Some notes to avoid pointless responses:

1. If other sites load fine, and ping is fine, it is not a bandwidth or traceroute issue.

2. If CPU and memory usage is fine, it is not a load issue.

---------

The only thing I can theorize based on my limited knowledge is that it could be a hard drive seek. I do not know if that will cause SSH connections to slow down and PHP and MySQL.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Intermittent "Can't Connect To MySQL Server"
I started getting small periods of intermittent connection errors about once every hour, lasting for about 1 to 5 minutes each time:
Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket
'/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock'

I enabled the error log and did some other monitoring and established 2 things:
- the server doesn't crash/restart, it keeps running throughout the errors
- the errors do not match the load on the website, as sometimes when 500 users are online there are no errors, but when 300 are online they may by prolific

I checked many forums and then made 5 changes:
- changed the directory containing the mysql.sock file so only file owners or superusers can delete files from it
- I changed the default socket file setting in both my.cnf and php.ini
- I read about SELinux causing such a problem, so I disabled SELinux completely, rebooted the server and double-checked that it is indeed disabled.
- I changed the maximum amount of open files allowed by the operating system from 1024 to 30000.

Despite all these changes, I still get the errors. I then read that there is a workaround by using TCP/IP instead of the sock file. I tried that, but I still get the error intermittently in the form of:
Can't connect to MySQL server on 127.0.0.1

MySQL server 4.1.20, PHP 4.3.9, client API 4.1.20, CentOS 4.3, Intel P4 2.8GHz 1GB RAM

APC :: Shows "timeout" And "out Of Memory" Errors With Php Scripts
We have installed APC 3.1.3p1 beta (and also 3.0.19 stable seperately, to test) and we are seeing a lot of "out of memory" and "timeout" errors. For example, a php scripts dies saying the available memory is 256Kbytes, and the script tries to allocate 256 Mbytes of memory.

Here are the APC settings:

[APC]
apc.enabled = 1
apc.shm_segments = 1
apc.shm_size = 128
apc.max_file_size = 8M
apc.stat = 1

and PHP settings related to memory is

memory_limit = 1024M

We have tried included apc.php file to watch out the cache, but it doesn't show any kind of fragmantation or etc. related with system, instead it shows "timeout" and "out of memory" errors with php scripts.

We have thought that the error can be related to /dev/shm as you should increase apc.shm_size in order to obtain more memory, therefore we have mounted /dev/shm as 4Gbytes. The server has 8Gbytes of memory (using 64-bit CentOS).

Note that once we set apc.enabled = 0, the problems go away, so it's definitely something with APC.

"Can't Connect To Local MySQL Server" + "IPS Driver Error"
During peak times (especially weekends) many of my site's users have been reporting intermittent 'IPS Driver Errors' in the forums and the following error in the coppermine gallery:

Quote:

Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (11)

(The forums and the gallery are the main parts of the site).

I'm assuming that the site is having problems handling the number of users trying to connect to SQL. I tried increasing the max_connections and max_user_connections settings in my.cnf but it doesn't seem to have made a significant difference.

What do I need to do to fix this? Would I need to upgrade my server specs or is it something to do with the server settings?

my server specs: AMD Dual/Dual Opteron 270 with 4GB RAM.

Kazix / Fatnetwork / "Mark" And "Jacob"
A year ago I started up a website for me and some friends. By the end of last year ( December ) the website had died and I knew that I ( being a broke college student ) wouldn't have the funds to pay for a renewal.

I contacted Kazix and told them I was having trouble figuring out how to cancel my account and asked if they could do it for me or inform me how. I received the following email on Dec 18th 2007:

"Sir,

As soon as the hosting is about to end. You will get notice from our billing department.

-- Regards, Mark Senior Administrator fatnetwork.net/"

I figured this email would tell me how to cancel my account if I did not wish to renew it. I never received such an email.

I found out Friday that my banking account was over-drawn. I thought this was through my own error, but when I looked closely today, I noticed it was because 2co.com, the third-party billing company used by Kazix/Fatnetwork, had charged me for hosting renewal and had caused my account to go negative.

I sent them an email informing them that I had asked back in December for my account NOT to be renewed and that they had in fact went ahead and renewed it anyways. I requested that they reimburse me the charge of the domain, hosting, and overdraft. I had wrongly thought that my domain name was processed through them as well.

I received an email from billing@fatnetwork.com saying:

"Your domain is not registered by KAZIX – only hosted
See WHOIS by yourself
The respond you got not from us – from GoDaddy – your domain registrant

( Who is removed )

You never requrested a cancellation from us – blame yourself for over drafting, you should know where your account hosting with
I’ll refund the charge of $44.99 and cancel the 2CO subscription as well as your account with KAZIX– that’s all I can do for you"

I wasn't really expecting them to reimburse my overdraft charges ( really, why should they pay for their mistake that harms others? ). And I fully admit that I did honestly forget that my domain name was registered by my husband and not by Kazix. What did surprise me was the tone of the email. I did use the Kazix's contact form on their website to request that my hosting be stopped. Why would I contact Go-Daddy if I had completely forgot that they were the ones in charge of my domain? If I hadn't contacted Kazix, why did Mark send me an email from fatnetwork in response to my request to cancel my account? Yeah. Someone was just being rude and snippy because they didn't want to admit that they made a mistake.

I sent a reply back to the rude man and informed him that I found his email to be very rude and not a good way to handle customers. I also informed him that I did use the contact page on Kazix's website and that I fully knew who my hosting was through.

I received this email as a reply:

"I’m sure you have some other things to do Saturday night – not only be rude
I’ve responded you( from home, because billing is working only Mon-Fri )
I’ve refunded your charge immediately
I’m very glad you are not our customer anymore
Have a great weekend
Jacob
Billing Department"

Me and my husband were both floored when we read this. Who would handle customer support this way? I couldn't believe that he would have the gall to call me rude just for me pointing out his own rudeness. Then of course there is the nice touch of "I'm very glad you are not our customer anymore." Could you imagine someone in retail or any other face-to-face business practice saying this to you?

You know I didn't leave Kazix because I found it to be "bad." I just left it because of my own financial reasons. I had some technical problems with them before and found them to be helpful. If I hadn't experienced all of this, I probably would have recommended them to others and used them again. Now? I seem them as a shady group of characters who care more about their customer's money than they do about their actual customers.

As I see it now, they obviously did not want me to cancel my hosting with them and obviously wanted to renew my account for the money. What about my say in not wanting their services anymore and wanting to keep what little money I had left in my checking account? It didn't matter.

Stay away from Kazix and Fatnetwork. Let my bad experiences be your warning.

Intermittent Domain Name Server (DNS) Problems
My employer hosts a website for a company that has a .co.uk site and a .com site. The .com site generally cannot be accessed but the .co.uk site can always be accessed. Both sites are on the same server (which we maintain), but an outside company hosts the DNS records and refuses to admit there is a problem.

Since one domain is accessible and one isn't and they are both on the same server I'm pretty sure it's a DNS issue. I did a report on www.dnsreport.com and it says there are lame nameservers on the .com domain, but the .co.uk domain doesn't show that issue.

Am I on the right track with lame nameservers?

VPS Providers! What's Your Take On "write Back" & "write Through"
I recently worked on an issue involving a severe performance issue between "write back" and "write through" caching on the RAID/HD.

Long story short, we purchased 12 IBM x3550 M2s came with LSI SAS1068E/SR-BR10i (gimp redheaded stepchild of the MR series. No BBU, no onboard DIMM.) RAID controller and had very bad and inconsistent write throughput with it. Sometimes it writes out 300-400MB/s (dd test, I know... don't flame. I know dd is NOT a good test.), somethings as low as 30MB/s. The server is configured with 2.5" SATA 500GB on HW RAID-1.

From dmesg log it was default to "write through" on sda. I figured out via lsiutil, you can set the drives to "write back". Once we did that, the write performance is more consistent. NOTE, this enables write back on the SATA drives, NOT the controller itself.

I loop out lspci on all our VPS servers. Found out those with LSI (SAS 8344ELP) cards have sda set to "write through w/ FUA". Those are already all RAID-10s, and I have not heard a single complaint from any customer stating poor I/O performance.

I believe the 8344ELP do have a BBU, I can double-check with DC. The DC is on UPS as well. So that rules out the shortcomings of enabling write back caching.

I want to ask those of you using Xen (3.3 & 3.4). Do you guys have better I/O performance with "write back" or "write through" caching? I'm actually looking for real world results. Where you guys actually deployed production VPS server with clients on it.

VPS Incredibly Slow, Huge Numbers Of Slow MySQL Queries For Plesk/Watchdog
I've got 25 domains on a Virtuozzo/Plesk8.6/CentOS5 VPS. Each domain has one up-to-date install of WordPress, most have very little traffic (average 200mb per month), maybe 2 domains get 5-7gb traffic per month.

I monitor port 80 connections and rarely see more than 10 at a time.
That should in my opinion be no problem at all for a VPS with 768mb guaranteed ram and 2.4ghz cpu. I've got 30gb hard drive spare too.

But.... about 8 or 10 times a day it grinds to a complete halt: server load at 500-1000%, sites timing out, plesk takes 3mins to load, often I can't even connect with SSH, and the plesk web server, apache

INSERT INTO module_watchdog_sys_stat (time, type, value, service_id) VALUES(FROM_UNIXTIME(1226404705), 'MAINMEM_USAGE', 17472, 11);

80 seconds sounds like a huge amount of time for a MySQL insert to me! Does anyone know if this is likely to be the cause of my trouble? Some problem with Plesk and the database? Or could it be something else?

Reason why I know it's apache, is if I stop apache, the amount of free ram immediately starts increasing.

Is this a misconfiguration of Apache?

I don't have a problem with Bluehost, but after getting this email tonight I would have thought that it's not that hard to have enough fuel and a big enough generator to last more than five minutes after a power outage. It seems like pretty poor redundancy planning if a major host can't last more then five minutes with no power. Hospitals and other places don't have any problem doing it with similar or bigger power demands.

Dear Bluehost Customer,

This evening (July 14th) from about 5:25pm-6:55pm many of our servers
were offline causing significant downtime for many of our users. The
outage was due to a severe power outage in the north end of Orem, Utah
where our servers are located. We do have UPS backup as well as diesel
generators, but at about 5:30 they finally gave out. The power outage
was for much longer than that period of time, but the reserve power
was eventually consumed in its entirety. When it rains it pours.

For users on box65-box145 there have been periodic problems with the
Redhat linux kernel that we were using that was causing problems with
the filesystem that your data is stored on. This issue has been causing
periodic problems for users on those boxes. In the last few days we have
resolved that issue which also caused those boxes to require a reboot.

The downtime is extremely regretable. We apologize profusely for the
inconvenience to our customers and in turn to those who were trying to visit
your sites during the outage. With the fixes we have put in place in the
last few days coupled with other upgrades you should experience MUCH
better uptime in the future.

Thanks for you patience,

Matt Heaton / President Bluehost.com

Gigenet - 17 Hours 50 Minutes Of Unexplainable Downtime
My entire experience with Gigenet has been very bad. I will post a 30 day review once I have completed my first and only billing cycle with them. This topic will be solely focused on the way Gigenet handled my server being down for 17 hours and 50 minutes. I have paid Gigenet for 30 days of service, one billing cycle. My account is set to be terminated on the 7th of June.

I pay Gigenet to actively monitor my server. These services are called "NOC Response from Monitoring" and "Host Ping (ICMP) and TCP Service Monitoring". The extra "service" cost $10/mo.

I realized that my server was down after 7 hours of downtime. I sent in a "critical" support ticket at about 3 AM.

Here is a timeline of my support ticket with Gigenet

Can I at least get a confirmation that this issue is being worked? It's 3:32 AM...I have to work tomorrow morning and would prefer to get some sleep.

Thanks...

* Note: I am not exactly clear why the time stamp and the time mentioned by me in the ticket don't line up.

I have server monitoring. Can you also explain to me how SEVEN HOURS of down time was over looked by your "server monitoring"?

This server has been marked for cancellation.

I see that the date set was for June 7th and today is the 5th, I will need to speak to a Billing representative before I can re-enable this device. The Billing Department will not be in until 10am, I will leave this ticket open and I will speak to them first chance I get.

* Note my server is still down at this point.

Yes, because canceling my service two days earlier makes a lot of sense. I paid Gigenet for 30 days, I should get all 30 days. Maybe I'm misunderstanding something?

Please respond so I can get to bed...

I understand your concern, but your server port was administratively shutdown and I was able to find the cancellation ticket. I need to speak with someone from Billing concerning this issue. This looks to be a mistake on our end, but I don't have all the details in front of me. I will attempt to contact my manager and get this straightened out. All further updates will be posted here.

It was nearly 4:00 AM at this point. I had to be at work by 6:30 AM. My server was still down, so I went to bed.

The next day I received this response:

Hello,

Your server should be back online until the 7th. We're very sorry for the inconvenience. I've confirmed the server's availability via ping from my workstation. Please let us know if you have problems accessing it and we'll take another look.

At this point in time my server was restored. The total downtime was 17 hours and 50 minutes. I monitor my server with a third-party service called "HyperSpin".

Seeking an answer to explain nearly 18 hours of downtime; I sent this response.

What is the reason for the downtime? Is 17 hours and 50 minutes of unexplainable downtime something that I should expect from Gigenet?

Quote:

Hello,

Unfortunately I' not exactly sure what happened. I think the server may have been prematurely canceled, but I'm not totally certain. The server should be back up and I've put in the necessary ticket to make sure it stays on until the 7th, as you requested. We're very sorry for this inconvenience.

So, the best I can get out of Gigenet is that my server may have been shutdown prematurely. I don't understand why Gigenet can not fully explain nearly 18 hours of downtime. No one seems to know exactly what happened...

Futurehosting.biz Support Times In Minutes? Hmm
I recently signed up (just yesterday) with this company on the grounds of pricing and reviews. I especially noted the fact that they respond "in minutes" well. I have opened 2 tickets thusfar:

first:
Created On: 15 Jul 2007 04:54 PM Last Update: 15 Jul 2007 06:06 PM

second:
reated On: 16 Jul 2007 02:25 AM

I am new to the VPS hosting game. Are support times generally longer than with shared hosting? Or am I just encountering some bad luck? To me, you should want to be impressing newly registered customers. Especially concerning support and when the client has stated VPS is new to him.

I am currently on this plan:

Managed
cPanel - Platinum
450GB 512MB 1.5GB 30GB 2 IPs cPanel: $44.95

Any others out there with quick support times (livechat?) and a comparable package/price? (price is important)

Load Spikes Every Morning, Every 30 Minutes, Host Can't Solve
We've had a VPS for just over a month now. I am not going to mention the host by name (yet) but they advertise here and other people here reported liking them.

Sadly it's not my experience and I regret my purchase.

Every morning for the past few weeks, we get load spikes every 30 minutes that make our site unusable for a minute (on our VPS, any load over 1.0 is sluggish, over 2.0 is virtually unusable, over 3 is unresponsive)

Here's a series of days as an example:
[url]

The worst part about this is the host insists 1. either it's not happening or 2. they can't find it

I know it's happening because when I try to load a page on the half-hour, it takes over 13 seconds (less than 1 second normally). And it's fairly obvious it's someone doing a cron job with some nasty downloading, uploading, or maybe a massive mysql update.

Someone tell me what to tell them because this is driving me out of my mind. The load is NOT being caused by ourselves, I've made sure all our cron jobs don't happen on the exact half hour and we get lots of traffic later in the day without loads.

Speed Of Page Loading Goes Down Some Minutes After Httpd Restart
Recently we have launched our new cpanel server, We have some problems on that.

When we restart httpd, all things will be good before 15 min, but after that, speed goes down to 1/10 and after some hours that will get as low as nobody can view pages on the server.

We are using cPanel latest release and CSF on CentOS4.5.

Apache 1.3.7 and PHP4.4.7 is running on the server with Zend.

$w =~ /load average: (.+)

$log = $1;

$log = $rightnow . ": " . $log ."

open (OUTFILE, ">>top_logfile.txt");
print OUTFILE "$log

close (OUTFILE);
#sleep for 30 minutes
sleep(1800);

OpenVZ Different Gateways IP Ranges, Unpingable From Outside World "feature" Any Fix?
OpenVZ different gateways IP ranges, unpingable from outside world "feature" any fix?

The server main IP (eth0) is 200.44.32.42, the allocation is 200.44.32.40/29 - 200.44.32.41 being the GATEWAY.

The ADDITIONAL IP allocation is 200.44.32.96/28, 200.44.32.97 being the GATEWAY.

Now, if I be specific on /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and declare everything like so:

DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=none
BROADCAST=10.20.47.255
HWADDR=
IPADDR=10.20.42.198
NETMASK=255.255.248.0
NETWORK=10.20.40.0
ONBOOT=yes
GATEWAY=10.20.40.1
TYPE=Ethernet

Please ignore all the above IPs config.

Now, using that VE nodes on the 200.44.32.96/28 range are unpingable. How can I fix that?

Please take note that I remove all settings from ifcfg, and leave IPADDR and GATEWAY, the internet can ping the nodes. But within the 200.44.32.0/24 no-one can ping the nodes on the 200.44.32.96/28 range ( Which is my problem, that I came here to solve).

Here's the VE ...

Shared Host "green" / Carbon Offsetting, Cpanel, $10-$20 A Month
I'm currently with webfaction (which awesome) for some of my Django installs, but it's a pain for static installations (especially when clients need their own ftp accounts). So, I'm looking for a cpanel host for clients with simple PHP sites (FrogCMS and Wordpress) and static sites. I use an amazon S3 bucket for most of clients images...

I need about 25-50 SQL databases, 5-15 gigs in bandwidth, and 5-10 gigs in storage.

Many of clients are non-profits and have environmental concerns so I need a host that is "green tagged" (purchases energy from renewable resources) and uses offsets (and has a page detailing this).

I'd also like somewhere with a data-center on the east coast (I'm in Montreal)

I have $10-$20 monthly (I purchase for a year).

Exim ACL To Send Mailer Daemon Messages To ":fail:"
One of my users is receiving way too many Mailer Daemon messages and his mailbox is full. I've had this problem from time to time and I am trying to figure out how to block mailer daemon messages for a specific domain so that they do not even get on the mailing queue...much like when you set a default address to ":fail:". So I came up with this:

refuse_md1:
deny message = The original message did not come from this site.
condition = ${if eq{$sender_address}{}{yes}{no}}
condition = ${if eq{$local_part}{userdomain.com}{yes}{no}}
log_message = Refused a bounce message for userdomain.com

However, this doesn't help. The emails are still going to the mailing queue and when I look at the Exim log I see the usual error message saying that the email was blocked because the account has run out of space.

The trubbles comes when i try to check out. Godaddy for instance. Trying to finish my order, but they still want my creditcard information (dont use visa, master or amex).

EasyCGI was very close. They accept true paypal-payment, but only on a yearly basis.
Do anyone know why this is so hard for them? And/or do you know any host that fit the requirements?

Is There An "email Host" That Lets You Send Lots Of Emails

Problem is my web host only allows a certain amount of emails per hour, and a cap on emails per day. Are there any email hosts, meaning, a service I can sign up with that will allow me to send these emails? I don't want anything complex like aweber and constant contact. I just want the articles on my site's news section to become the actual announcement/newsletter. I thought about Feedburner, but they don't let you import your subscribers.. I wouldn't be sending announcements every day, but perhaps a couple of times per month..

ISP/work DNS Sporatic: "Server Not Found"
A few weeks back I changed the DNS for my personal website.

With that said, my work runs their own DNS, and for some reason I can only visit my domain name on and off...

For example, I might come into work one day and visit my domain:

[url]

It will work just fine... No connection problems. Then, a few hours later, I try to visit my site again and I get this error:

Quote:

Server not found
Firefox can't find the server at www.example.com.

Then a few/many hours later I can connect again with no problems!!!

Every computer/browser that I have tried in the building gives me this (or similar) error.

This connection problem happens very frequently, and it is on/off throughout the day.

I have narrowed it down to the domain name servers because when I use OpenDNS, I have not problems whatsoever.

Additionally, when I connect to my site from home, I never get this error.

Questions:

1. What do you think the problem is?

2. When approaching the IS dept. with this, what should I tell them is wrong?

I emailed 3 companies 3 days ago. One replied within 6 hours with a quote, and the other two still have yet to respond, guess which company I am most likely to go with?

So do you get put off by a lack of a sales team / delays? To me its like they don't want my service.

ALL Perl Scripts - "Premature End Of Script Headers"?
It's been a LONG time since I've used Perl scripts, since almost everything these days is PHP-based. But there is one old Perl script that I dusted off and decided to attempt to use today on my server, and to my surprise I can NOT get it working. I've come to discover it's not just this script, it's ALL Perl scripts on the server right now that aren't working (at least within Apache).

Here's what I know for sure:

1. Path to Perl on all scripts IS correct (/usr/local/bin/perl)
2. File permissions on the Perl scripts is correct (755, also tried 777 for testing)
3. Scripts are not C compiled scripts, they're straight Perl code and they have been uploaded properly (ASCII mode).

So now for whatever reason, I'm getting the following Apache error each time I try to run any simple Perl script: "Premature end of script headers".

Here's the simplest of scripts I'm attempting to run:

Code:
#!/usr/local/bin/perl
print "Content-type: text/html

";
print "Hello, World.";
Something as simple as this script is even triggering the error. I've searched through this forum and on Google for an easy solution, but I can't seem to come across anything.

Any possible ideas on this one? Again, it's been so long since I've run anything Perl that it's very likely my server has been this way since day one - but I just didn't realize it.

"Semi-managed" Server Versus Geek-on-retainer
I'm a (mostly SQL and Java) programmer by trade, I have an MSc. in Computer Engineering, and for almost 8 years I have done web and database programming on the side. I have a site (www.the-athenaeum.org) that has had its ups and downs. Sometimes I find lots of time to work on it, other times life intrudes and I neglect it. It gets a few hundred thousand hits and maybe 30,000 unique visitors per month (or so).

Long ago, I decided (for reasons of security and some idea of the nobility of open source) to go with FreeBSD/PostgreSQL. I went from crappy no-name hosting to CanHost to LayeredTech, teaching myself the OS and db from scratch in little scraps of free time. In general I have always gone the cheap route by necessity. I'm determined to keep my site nonprofit, so I've never had banner ads or Google ads. Over time as I made more $ in my "real job" I could afford slightly better servers.

These days I could probably spare $200 per month out of my own pocket to subsidize my hobby. We have a new partner who may provide another $200 per month or so.

I have come to a point where my lack of knowledge is probably holding us back. It's a one-man operation from a web/db-programming standpoint, and I am finding myself using too much time on anti-hacker and server-optimization activities. The server runs slowly. People keep spamming my PunBB install. I am trying to keep the server up and responsive instead of adding new features and finding new users. My cheapness is biting me in the butt. I think if the server ran smoothly when people came, and if I could spend my time adding the cool features I dream of, we would double or triple our user base pretty easily.

I suppose you could sum up my operation by saying that I have a web site that "does cool stuff ... slowly."

I figure I have two possible routes:

1. Pay for a "semi-managed" server or a managed server: By this I mean having someone set up the OS to be very solid, someone who can look into why the server is so sluggish and fix it. Someone who can give me an SLA that deals with spamming/hacking. I don't care about admin. panels and the like, but I do need a solid, fast server, or at least one that performs up to its basic potential.

2. Have a "geek on retainer": Instead of that, pay for targeted services. Pay a FreeBSD guy to do the initial server setup. Pay an Apache/PostgreSQL guru(s) to get the basic infrastructure in place. Pay a PunBB mod developer to harden the forums. Bring them back in when specific problems come up.

I've learned a lot over the last few years, but I will never become the expert that is needed to fully grok the sys. admin. tasks.

Which route would you recommend, or is there a better way? How do I price out these services?

GNAX Is Top 10 SpamHaus "Worst Spam" ISP
Someone brought to my attention something very interesting today: GNAX has a significant number of SpamHaus listings, many over a year old. There are also multiple ROSKO listings.

[url]

I have always heard generally good things about GNAX, so I wonder why they are dropping the ball here.

WarmWebHost - "warm, Fuzzy" Feeling Is GONE… Just Like WWH
I have had horrible trouble with this very unscrupulous host, WarmWebHost, and problems from day one, but it seems since the first of August they they have just disappeared. They use "bait & switch" tactics, said they offered things/services they did not (such as NeoMail and 24/7 support). They do not respond to support tickets, and their ticketing system stinks. When they initially got back to me on my first few tickets, it was a basic and curt reply (“looks good from our end”) and of little or no help.

WarmWebHost is a “ColdWebRipoff”. My sites were down quite often, and when I complained and put in trouble tickets, all of a sudden my databases mysteriously disappeared. Can you say "retribution"??? Plus, if you do open a trouble ticket, they will arbitrarily close your tickets without taking any action or responding to you – I reopen them, then they close them again!

I've tried in vain to contact these people. Seems like they've taken our money and run. I say "our" because there are others. Seems there are quite of few of us that had WWH accounts that are having the same issues. I've called them (got their number off WhoIs), but there's just some cryptic answering machine message that I doubt is even checked. I also doubt that anyone will call me back... but, hey, you can try it. I've also emailed them, pm'd them, tried their "Live Online Support" (which by the way is *never* online!) and put in tickets galore via their ticketing system. Don't count on the tickets though, because if you put one in they just close it without responding or acting on whatever the issue is.

I’ve done a Google search on 'warmwebhost', and it comes back with plenty bad reviews, all along the same time frame (here's an example: [url]

And they guy on that site that did post a good review (Michael at BlackListedHosting) is defunct now... I wonder if WWH nuked them too? Additionally, I see WarmWebHost has posted his “services” available in LOTS of forums, so it’s obvious they are wanted to attract and gather as many accounts as possible in as short a time period as possible. I wanted to post here as well because I know this is one of the forums WarmWebHost has visited and posted in, and it was via a forum “host request” that I found them… er, rather, they found me. So, maybe they'll read up on how pissed some folks are and do something (hey, we can hope, right?).

Also, bearing in mind that I’m not a hosting specialist, but with regard to “uptime” measurement, isn’t that supposed to be where your hosting services are, and not your host’s OWN personal site’s server? For instance, say my hosting was on IP 123.45.678.910; the “uptime” that is actually being recorded is off their own server (where their WarmWebHost.com site resides), with IP address of say 456.78.910.11. Is that right – is that the industry norm? Because that is what is happening.

Anyway, the short of it is they have ignored me and my requests for support and repair, and ultimately a refund of my money if they can’t/won’t respond and/or fix the problems - my sites are down, my databases have mysteriously disappeared right after I reported them to a web hosting forum, and I have not heard a peep from them in going on three weeks. I had 4 outstanding trouble tickets for 4 different problems (cpanel access, email problems, databases gone, and websites down); I looked into the ticket system *hoping* they'd answered, but no - all the tickets were closed again with no response or action! I'm very unhappy, and would like to see them Blacklisted.

They have a 15-day money back “guarantee” (wink, wink), but if you can’t get a response, what good is that guarantee and how can you enforce it? I'm not a legal person, but I do believe that there might be some fraud involved here too if they've promised/guaranteed refunds and then have not done so. Seems like they've taken a lot of people's money (mine included) and now have just vanished.

Stay away from this horrible host; they are deceitful and will take your money; you won’t get the service and you won’t get your money back.
