Setting Up VMware In Hosting Enviroment
Jul 12, 2007
I'm have installed windows 2003 on a VMware installation as a virutal server. Now it's time to set up my customers home pages but i don't know what way that will be the best. What option do you think is the best?
1. Make a new partion inside the virutal mashine.
2. Install another virutal mashine as a file server and mount efterything from UNC network.

Does anyone think this is feasable? For instance, we all see web servers hosted in the "cloud", as well as pay per user exchange and other mail servers.
Now, what if I wanted to host all my servers (web, email, file, domain controller, and several application servers) at a data center using Vmware.
I did some research and found out that the cost of creating a private cloud (VMWARE licensing alone) would be prohibitive. Is there a way to rent/lease a "private cloud"? Or perhaps I would not even mind if we shared space with others on the server(s) on a "public cloud".
Any ideas on if VPS (or other types of) hosters that could provide this service?

I've been investigating and testing Xen for a few months in order to add Xen VPS to the hosting services I have available. With the recent news re: VMware Server, and my experience with VMware, I've started to look, and easily prefer, using this product over Xen. Has anyone else started to look at it as a possible alternative for hosting purposes?

I have a DNS server in another datacenter and I'm considering moving my own website to that server, so we'll be online and can receive e-mails when the network is down.
We are considering making 2 virtual machines on that server. 1 for Secundary DNS and 1 for Plesk-hosting for the homepage. Both cannot be on the same server if we wanted to, because they conflict.
SuperMicro Server, Pentium 4 3.0 GHz, 3GB, 2x80GB RAID(1) for hosting 2 Virtual Machines on VMWare Server 2, CentOS 5. One of which with Plesk.
Can I expect a 100% uptime with low load? I am not planning to increase capacity requirements on the server as no additional sites/services with be hosted.

A friend of mine is looking to develop a pretty extensive and complex website and would like to be able to use something similar to VMWare server, but doesn't want to be locked into VMware and needing to find a small fortune just to build out his application should either VMware start charging for VMware Server or having to move up to one of their high-end high-cost solutions.
I know with Virtuozzo the licensing fees are reasonably low, but does anyone have any experience using it outside of the hosting industry?
Does the software lend itself well to being used by a single client who is not using it to sell VPSs?

I want to do 2-3 Deki Wiki installs, each on their own domain. This is the Deki Wiki install page that contains details about their installs:
http://wiki.mindtouch.com/Official_M...llation_Guides
I have HostGator reseller hosting now, and am very pleased with it. But, their setup does not allow me to install VMWare or root installations. This is the message I received from HostGator support:
Dear Customer,
We do not allow VMWare installation on our reseller servers, and do not support it (although it is allowed) on dedicated servers. In this case, you would need to go with the CentOS option, which is the operating system we run. However, according to the install information at http://wiki.mindtouch.com/Official_M...e_Installation we cannot allow this installation on our reseller servers.
This product requires mono and requires the installation of the deki wiki at the server root, neither of which we allow on reseller machines.
The only option to run Deki Wiki is to upgrade to a dedicated server solution.
If you have any questions, please let us know.
I am looking for a very low-cost way to do this, not a dedicated server. Please post if you know of a host. Cpanel is preferred but not required if you have something equally user-friendly. If you know of one who offers free installation of Deki Wiki, that would be an added plus. I am looking to host at least 2 and maybe more domains in the future.
Is there also a subforum where I can post an RFP and receive offers?

We have setup and are currently testing a load balanced cluster using heartbeat and ldirectord. One of the problems we have come across is that we are unable to reliably use the same web server for connections from the same user. As a result the php sessions are getting in a bit of a muddle.
Obviously its not something that we can easily sync between servers like the customers other web content. We are looking at either storing the sessions in a database or NFS.
The site is pretty busy and we are a bit worried that when the site goes live both these options will slow everything down.
Apart from using different load balancing software is there any other solutions we could use for this? Has anyone stored php sessions in a database on a busy site or on a NFS?

One of our customer is looking to use wild card SSL on one of his site hosted with us, he needs clarification on following.
Quote:
We want to have load balanced site serving contents from three different Apache on different physical machines. Site needs SSL security and we will have wildcard SSL for it. However, since the CSR is generated from one apache, will the SSL certificate give errors or alerts if the request is transferred to other apache?.
This is something I am not aware of, infact no such need come thru.

I want to create a testing environment that is a miniature replication of a full production environment for a web service. From what I understand I'll need three components:
1. A web server
2. PIX firewall
3. DB server
Is there anything else I'll need or anything else I should be mindful of? Looking forward to insight/feedback.

Does anyone know how I could go about setting this service up? ( If I were to get a HostGator/webspace account, etc)

I ordered a domain from Name and a shared hosting package from Hawk Host. How do I set them up so they work together? I thought all I had to do was add the Hawk Host name servers to my Name account but that doesn't seem to be helping. I don't have any webpages up yet but I do have some files uploaded to be used as a redirect for a game server. The redirect isn't loading properly most of the time and when I type my domain name into a browser my directory won't show up either, just the parking page. I ordered both of these last week.

I have a domain name from godaddy and recently got a host plan in hostgator.
As this is the first time I use hosting, it is very confusing how to set it up properly.
So far what I figured out and was able to set is the DNS in godaddy and the add-on domain in hostgator.
So now I was able to point 'MyDomain' to direct to 'hostgatorDomain/MyFolder/' (names just for example).
The problem is that masking is not turned on and who ever clicks 'MyDomain' will get to the right location, but the address will change to 'hostgatorDomain/MyFolder/'.
How to do the set up so the URL will not change?

I have built a server so I can co-locate it to be used for shared hosting. The specification is high, compared to most dedicated server offerings, so I was considering splitting it up into different virtual machines for different purposes. The specification is: Intel Xeon 3230 (4x 2.66ghz), 8GB DDR ECC RAM, Seagate Cheetah SAS 15,000rpm (4x 147GB), Adaptec RAID 5405 (RAID 6 Array with Battery Backup), Dual on-board NIC, etc.
The original plan was to use this machine as just one linux server, but I am concerned most of its potential will not be exploited. So I am exploring the possibility of setting it up as 2 Virtual Machines, installing Linux on one and Windows on the other. This way I can offer hosting for ASP and ASP.NET, and possibly MS SQL and/or Exchange depending on costs for their licences.
What Microsoft licences are suitable for servers used for shared hosting? From what I can gather there are several ways of being licenced, but I can't figure out which is the most cost effective. It seems you buy the server OS edition that supports your requirements, then pay another licence per user (CAL?) - I haven't got a clue how many users I will need to have though. Then if you want to use MS SQL, DNS or Exchange you need the correct edition - and buy licences for these too.
Does anyone know roughly what I should be looking to pay for what? I would ideally like to have MS SQL, DNS and Exchange - but am aware that the licence could be so expensive that it wouldn't be worth doing.

I am going to be sending a 2U server in for colocation. It will be running CentOS 5 64bit at the core and be utilizing VMware for virtual machines.
If I get say 8 ( 5 usable ) IPs as apart of my colocation plan, how can I delegate which IPs goto which virtual machine?

Does anyone here use VMware server on a dedicated server to run Windows or other OS? And in terms of IP address how would this work? Do you need to set the VM as being NATed, or does it have it's own external IP? In terms of performance on a typical 100$-200$/mo dedicated server, how good is it? All these factors depend on a lot of things and I realize that, though. (what apps run, etc)
And do server providers even allow to install something like this? I've never leased a dedicated server before but I'm thinking of getting a linux one, but also running a windows VM for a RunUO server, and unfortunately that only runs in windows. I want a linux server as I prefer LAMP for hosting, and I'd try to get a few clients on the server just so I can pay it off monthly. Also Linux servers are generally cheaper monthly and I like the idea of using SSH tunnels rather then straight RDP, which gives me chills just thinking of, from a security perspective.

Not to start a flamewar, but I was curious about real world scenarios, and peoples experience with and recommendations for either.
I have been asked to plan out a smallish virtualization environment (10-12 Dell hosts, iSCSI Equalogic backend), and when reviewing the cost of going with VMWare over Citrix, I can't seem to justify the costs. I figure since Amazon runs on Xen, it must be pretty decent, but am I missing something?

I'm not sure how many people here use VMWare, but I'll give this question a shot... I'm looking for a solution similar to Winrar that can view the contents of the .vmdk file. Either to extract any files, or just view the contents without having the have the virtual machine online. I checked Google as well as VMWare's forums/website with no avail.
