SSL Certificates Doubts - Please Clearify

I am going to implement my first SSL certificate hence I have so many doubts about it.I am on shared host, I created Signing request and got my SSL verified and issued. However, in my WHM there is no option to install it. I asked host and they said that they will install for us asked me for Cert and KEY ..
Thats ok but they said that I need to have dedicated IP assigned to the domain for which I Need SSL certificate..
so guys, it is not possible to install SSL on shared IP but bound to the domain I want ?
Please give your inputs and I will be happy if anyone want to share or tell me about common misconception about SSL certificate which a noob can have.. (based on your personal experience).

I´ve ordered a RAID 1 server 2x500GB SATA. With the 3ware raid card. I have cpanel installed.
This is the first time I´m using raid configs, so we are having some doubts:
1. How can I check if raid is running on the server? How can I be sure that raid system is correctly configured?
2. I´m only seeing one HDD, is this correct?

Mountain View (CA) - As a company with one of the world's largest IT infrastructures, Google has an opportunity to do more than just search the Internet. From time to time, the company publishes the results of internal research. The most recent project one is sure to spark interest in exploring how and under what circumstances hard drives work - or not.
There is a rule of thumb for replacing hard drives, which taught customers to move data from one drive to another at least every five years. But especially the mechanical nature of hard drives makes these mass storage devices prone to error and some drives may fail and die long before that five-year-mark is reached. Traditionally, extreme environmental conditions are cited as the main reasons for hard drive failure, extreme temperatures and excessive activity being the most prominent ones.
A Google study presented at the currently held Conference on File and Storage Technologies questions these traditional failure explanations and concludes that there are many more factors impacting the life expectancy of a hard drive and that failure predictions are much more complex than previously thought. What makes this study interesting is the fact that Google's server infrastructure is estimated to exceed a number of 450,000 fairly mainstream systems that, in a large number, use consumer-grade devices with capacities ranging from 80 to 400 GB in capacity. According to the company, the project covered "more than 100,000" drives that were put into production in or after 2001. The drives ran at a platter rotation speed of 5400 and 7200 rpm, came from "many of the largest disk drive manufacturers and from at least nine different models."
Google said that it is collecting "vital information" about all of its systems every few minutes and stores the data for further analysis. For example, this information includes environmental factors (such as temperatures), activity levels and SMART parameters (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) that are commonly considered to be good indicators to describe the health of disk drives.
In general, Google's hard drive population saw a failure rate that was increasing with the age of the drive. Within the group of hard drives up to one year old, 1.7% of the devices had to be replaced due to failure. The rate jumps to 8% in year 2 and 8.6% in year 3. The failure rate levels out thereafter, but Google believes that the reliability of drives older than 4 years is influenced more by "the particular models in that vintage than by disk drive aging effects."
Breaking out different levels of utilization, the Google study shows an interesting result. Only drives with an age of six months or younger show a decidedly higher probability of failure when put into a high activity environment. Once the drive survives its first months, the probability of failure due to high usage decreases in year 1, 2, 3 and 4 - and increases significantly in year 5. Google's temperature research found an equally surprising result: "Failures do not increase when the average temperature increases. In fact, there is a clear trend showing that lower temperatures are associated with higher failure rates. Only at very high temperatures is there a slight reversal of this trend," the authors of the study found.
In contrast the company discovered that certain SMART parameters apparently do have an effect drive failures. For example, drives typically scan the disk surface in the background and report errors as they discover them. Significant scan errors can hint to surface errors and Google reports that fewer than 2% of its drives show scan errors. However, drives with scan errors turned out to be ten times more likely to fail than drives without scan errors. About 70% of Google's drives with scan errors survived the first eight months after the first scan error was reported.
Similarly, reallocation counts, a number that results from the remapping of faulty sectors to a new physical sector, can have a dramatic impact on a hard drive's life: Google said that drives with one or more reallocations fail more often than those with none. The observed average impact on the average fail rate came in at a factor of 3-6, while about 85% of the drives survive past eight months after the first reallocation.
Google discovered similar effects on hard drives in other SMART categories, but them bottom line revealed that 56% of all failed drives had no count in either one of these categories - which means that more than half of all failed drives were put out of operation by factors other than scan errors, reallocation count, offline reallocation and probational counts.
In the end, Google's research does not solve the problem of predicting when hard drives are likely to fail. However, it shows that temperature and high usage alone are not responsible for failures by default. Also, the researcher pointed towards a trend they call "infant mortality phase" - a time frame early in a hard drive's life that shows increased probabilities of failure under certain circumstances. The report lacks a clear cut conclusion, but the authors indicate that there is no promising approach at this time than can predict failures of hard drives: "Powerful predictive models need to make use of signals beyond those provided by SMART."

I need to setup SSL.
I've never used SSL on any of my websites and I've never really understood how the certificates work.
I understand that SSL is used as a secure connection protocol (https://) and that it needs a valid certificate so that the encrypted data transfer can be committed.
OK makes sence, but why do some websites seem to have such difficultly setting up valid certificates?
You can setup SSL by with Apache + OpenSSL, but why do website hosting providers still allow you to purchase SSL certificates (isn't it supposed to be free)?
Finally, is it possible to setup SSL for a multiple-domain (Victual Host) server?

I have a client who requested me to do a website for his credit union company.
Some of the pages are forms that require customers to enter crucial information ie ssn etc etc. I told him that this can be broken into..and therefore he would need a secure way of transmitting this information. Therefore would the SSL certificate work for this issue? Where do i get one? We have a dedicated server and do i need to configure anything on that? Where can i get a trusted SSL Certificate, and ofcourse help to install it.

A year ago I bought a Geotrust quick SSL vertificate from my dedicated server host for about 299.
Now I see companies like server tastic selling the same Geotrust cert for $79 ehen Geotrusts website is still $299. How can that be? what am I missing here.

I purchased an EV SSL Cert, and all is fine. Installed via cPanel, and I get the green address bar in Firefox, but not in IE.
Comodo (the vendor) have an Auto-Enhancer feature which automatically tells IE to give me a green bar. They state in their FAQ the following instructions to install the feature:
Replace the bundle file that is in use for the web site.
Use the 'SSLCertificateChainFile' directive instead of the 'SSLCACertificateFile'/'SSLCACertificatePath' directives.
I have download a .CA-BUNDLE file from them.
Please tell me, now what do I do? I am at a lost at their instuctions, and going by my dealings with them, I think I can get help from you guys more accurately and quickly.
The server runs WHM/cPanel 11 with Apache 2 with mod_ssl. Full root access, but I am a Linux newbie.

I do web hosting (reseller); how much, in USD per year, do you think is a "reasonable" fee to charge clients for a shared SSL connection ?
The SSL is going to cost me $$ per year and I may have some use for it, but if clients want a shared SSL, instead of buying their own, I need to apportion the costs I incur somehow, and (maybe) make some small profit. I see the shared SSL as more of a service, but clients should pay _some_ $$ if they want to use one.
Any ideas on how much I should charge, please ?

I'm just looking for some background information or a place where I can learn more about this.
Here's the problem:
The web site runs on a dedicated Apache server. There's 2 SSL certificates installed, one for e-commerce for https://www.mysite.com and one to help with the administrative interface for https://admin.mysite.com. I run a custom php application that forces the web page from http://www.mysite.com to https://www.mysite.com when going to an e-commerce page.
Generally everything runs Ok but a few times this year there has been a problem where the php application points to https://www.mysite.com/ecom.php but instead it gets https://admin.mysite.com/ecom.php and gets a page not found.
In discussing this with my web hosting company they claim they haven't changed anything but they do manage to fix the problem and get the web site working correctly again.
I generally figure that the web hosting company has done some type of maintenance on the web server and messed-up the dns entries or something for the SSL part of the web site but this is really outside my area of experience. I'm trying to understand what went wrong and where the entries are that determine when going to SSL which SSL certificate/URL is used.

My website is currently running on http and the plesk control pannel is running on https
However the certificate for https for the plesk panel is out of date and self signed therefore web browsers promit its not valid.
I want to get a valid SSL certificate for https for Plesk, Client/Billing area and the main website.
I want to do it as easy as possiable (as I'm not one for technical stuff but if it was resoniable I could give it a go)
I dont want a self signed and want to try to go for something free or very cheap.
Any got any suggestions? I've looked around and come up with companys wanting alot of money I did come across another which was free but it was self signed.

I currently have a reseller accounts from Thawte, Comodo, and RapidSSL, but have realized that I can purchase Comodo and Geotrust SSL certificates cheaper from Namecheap.com and Enom.com
Namecheap.com support is (as always) superb. Any opinions from Enom.com support?
What about Resellerclub.com? I know that they recently started to sell Thawte certs at very good prices. How good is their support?

I am continuously getting this error message in my error_logs
Invalid method in request x16x03x01
I searched and found out that it is something to do with httpd.conf configurations and SSL. So I asked my provider to check it and solve. First they acknowledge that it was SSL issue but later I was told

Should this be fixed or it's not exactly an issue.

Is that something you talk to yahoo and google about setting up or what?

I've been using a single VeriSign SSL for years, of course renewing it! Now I need to get SSL on a few other servers for secure WCF services (Windows IIS web sites). I see there are several SSL cert vendors out there from very cheap to very expensive. VeriSign being on the expensive side, then there's geotrust, thawte, etc. Are they all the same in the end, or is there a catch to these cheaper ones?

Anyone else having trouble getting them to work correctly? I do outsourced support for a few different hosts, as well as handle issues for ours, and there seems to be an unreasonable amount of eNom certificates failing to install correctly.
I'm not sure why they are bombing (module mismatch, etc.), but I was wondering if anyone has any insight on this. This definitely isn't an issue with how they are being installed. No other SSL Certificates that we deal with are having as many problems.

I got a buddy of mine currently hosted with Yahoo and I'm tryin to install some certificates from Comodo.
I know if you have WHM you can just upload the certs and then just install from WHM. Well, Yahoo CP doesnt necessarily have that which sucks.
If there is anybody that can guide me on how to do such a task, would be great.
