Recommend Proxy Server
I operate a co-located server in a US datacenter (dedicated to projects of my small business, not a hosting service.) The OS is Windows 2003 Server. I wondered if anyone could recommend proxy server software which I could use to access the web from a US-based IP address even when I am overseas. (This would be helpful for getting streaming internet radio, which has started to block access from non-US IP addresses.) I know there are endless proxy servers available, but most are big and complicated, with 255 irrelevant features intended for regulating the internet access of a small business. I need something much simpler, preferably placing little load on the machine. The only feature needed is access restriction so only I can use it.

Memory Issues On JaguarPC VPS. Suggestions? Recommend A Virtual Private Server (VPS)
I recently moved my site from a shared hosting plan at $5 a month to a VPS at JaguarPC. I took advantage of one of the offers here at Web Host Talk. My setup has cPanel with 320MB of RAM. I have another site running the same software (Joomla, vBulletin) with cPanel and only 256MB of RAM at KnownHost. I've had zero problems with Knownhost and the site is snappy. The site hosted at JaguarPC continues to have all kinds of problems. Running a number of sites, I don't always get to check in on my sites unless I know of a problem. I'm sorry I didn't pay more attention to this site, because it was having all types of PHP memory issues. When I first contacted JaguarPC, they said they boosted the memory in Apache. The issues remained, so I contacted them again. They recommended more RAM. Now, I checked on my KnownHost site and that's running on 256MB. I figured that maybe JaguarPC didn't allocate enough RAM when they set up the VPS. They confirmed 320MB. Not wanting to change hosts, I asked them to poke around a bit more, considering what I know about KnownHost and my success there. I received this response: have checked and you are running named service on your server. named caches dns data and this can also consume a lot of memory, sometimes over a 100 MB may be consumed by this service. In addition to cPanel and named which are most memory consuming applications running on your server, there are other applications like apache web server and the php scripts running on the server also consume some memory. It is highly recommended that you upgrade the RAM on your VPS significantly to avoid such problems which may cause disruption of service. You can find a list of RAM and other VPS addons in the following link. Instead of helping me resolve the problem, they simply keep asking me to get more RAM. For SEO purposes, I like to keep my sites on different hosts. Can anyone recommend a VPS? I was certainly unaware that "named service" had such an impact on my VPS. If that's the case, is there any harm in not having this? SEO or otherwise?

Midphase Or LunarPages? Which Would You Recommend?
OK, after investigating nearly 30 hosts over the last month we're in the final... Telephone support was essential for me and both hosts have answered the phone instantly ever time I've rang them, no matter what time of day. Both have packages with multiple-domain hosting. Both have generally positive reviews in this and other forums and also on other review sites. LunarPages has rave reviews like no other host in this category, but their price is significantly more for the multiple domain package: Lunarpages: $25.50 - 4 GB storage - 200 GB bandwith Midphase: $12 - 7 GB storage - 'Unlimited' bandwith Both include a free domain. Storage/bandwith llimits don't mean much to me because I know I will not fill them. Was wondering what other people's experiences had been with these two hosts please?

Geekstorage has had good reviews here, but I've been sorely disappointed in the frequent downtime I've had on two separate servers. Looking to move elsewhere soon if I can find someone else. Would You Recommend Unmanaged Sever
With increased traffic lately I'm trying to plan my next move so I was hoping for some kind recommendation from you guys. My current setup is 1 VPS from knownhost (managed) where i have my wordpress sites and 1 VDS at FDC (unmannged) for static content like images and zip files but i would like to have everything in one place because it would work out cheaper. So the question is would i be risking too much if I moved my whole site to a unmanaged dedicated sever without having any expreice other than very basic stuff like intalling afp/ddos deflate? I have a company that wants to stream some live events via Windows Media Encoder/Windows Media Player. I believe the best route is to use a WMS, stream to the WMS, then the CDN would pull from there for events. Can someone help me explain a Windows Media Server versus a web server? Can you host web sites on a WMS? Is WMS just an extension to a regular Windows 2003 server?

Web Hosting On Same Server As Game Server
Does a typical LAMP setup for a high enough traffic site(s) take enough resources to affect the performance of a game server? (we'll say 1million page views per day) I'm speaking of say, 2MB of ram, dual xeon 2.8 type machine, with IDE drives. Nothing too fancy. 1 milion page views per day may be pushing it, so what about say, 200 per day? Just wondering if anyone has a setup like this and how it fairs out at the game server end. I'm thinking of moving my websites over to my game server + add more sites over time, but don't want it to lag the game. I know as a fact bandwidth would not be the issue, I'm thinking more ram/cpu. The game I host (Ultima Online) uses very little bandwidth with even 30+ people online. I use less then 1% of my link capacity at most times. I've seen it spike to 5% and that's most likely when I was downloading data.

Network Web Server And Database Server Together
I am going to setup our new database server (call it beta) in our data center. Previously we only had one server (call it alpha) which was web, email, ftp, dns, and database. Beta is taking over alphas database duties. We have a Sonicwall router/firewall as our main connection access point. I am trying to decicde if we should simply connect alpha and beta together locally via a gigabit crossover cable, or if I should connect beta into our sonicwall router/firewall. Beta does not need to be outside accessible at all. So if I connect beta to the sonicwall I simply would not open any ports. What do you guys think is best for performance and the overall right way to do it.

DB Server And Web Server In Different Data Centers
DHas anyone got experience of having a web server and db server setup where the servers are in different datacenters? Is this a viable solution or would the performance of sites suffer too much due to the added latency? The only other problem I can think of is additional bandwith usage but that's not a major worry. Reason I ask is beacause I've found and excellent deal for a DB server and would like to keep my current server for the front end..

I currently use a Dedicated Server: Quad Core, 8GB Ram, 3TB HDD as a Media server which streams video clips etc... on my websites. But Im moving my sites to a UK colo, I have been advised that its better to have Multiple Web Servers connected to a NAS / Storage Server? How To Setup A WEB Server Which Talks With DB A Server
I have been shooting away a lot of questions on these forums lately, but you guys have been very helpful. Thanks. My problem is this. We are going to get rackspace. Then we are going to purchase two servers. The first (WEB) is a httpd, dns, ftp, smtp, pop3 server. The second (DB) is purely a database server which will run mysql and mssql. The first server (WEB) runs a asp/php applications that need to connect and talk with the database (DB) server. I was thinking of only connection the WEB server to the physical internet through the co-location drop. Then connecting the WEB and DB server directly via a CAT6 cable. Both servers will have gigabit NIC cards. Then in theory in the asp/php applications all I have to do, is point them to the local ip address of the DB server as this should work. Is this a good solution? Will speed be an issue, the delay from talking to the WEB server and talking to the DB server? I was thinking this is more secure, because the WEB server is the only machine physically connected to the internet, the DB server is not. Though, is it true, if hackers compromise the web server, they then would be able to compromise the DB server as well via the WEB server? I am open to suggestions though, and better ways of setting this up.

I own a file hosting site. The site is powered by 2 servers - 1 front end web and database server, and 1 where all the files are stored. I'm facing a problem that uploading and downloading often failed. Connections to mysql would timeout. Has it to do with mysql settings or because the file server is located at a distance from the sql server?
