RJ45 KVM Cables - Interchangeable

Nov 26, 2008

I'm pricing out various options for KVM over IP solutions, and noticing that most of the options (Raritan, Avocent, Minicom, etc.) have RJ45 on the back, terminating in VGA+PS/2 or VGA+USB.

Minicom's version of the cables costs about $75, whereas the Raritan ones are about $150/each. Does anyone know if cables from one brand will work with another? It seems that there's no reason they wouldn't, but I also wouldn't be all that surprised if they swapped pin arrangement or the like just to make you buy their cables.

Has anyone done this before? Specifically Minicom adapters on a Raritan or Avocent KVM unit (RJ45).

UK CAT5e Patch Cables

Nov 4, 2007

I'm searching for a UK supplier of quality (consistently up to CAT5e spec) stranded patch leads. I'll be buying in semi-bulk quantities; I'd estimate 5-10 of each cable, 50-100 in total.

They should be available in at least 0.5m, 1m, 2m and 3m lengths; longer lengths are unneeded. Ideally, they would be available in 10cm increments. Availability of multiple colors is important.

I'm also searching for 24/1U 48/1-2U CAT5e through coupler panels.

[remove spaces in links - the forum doesn't seem to like me even writing URLs] tinyurl.com / 2xdyn2h (unfortunately, I am not allowed to link to them) and tinyurl.com / yw29ch appear to be good. Comments on them would be appreciated.

Cablemonkeys through couplers are, IMO, very expensive for what you get - Mini5 are reasonable. What difference can you see between them? Cablemonkeys do appear to have better cable management.

I've heard of problems with mixing cable and patch panels from different manafacturers, though mostly with CAT6; would this apply with through-couplers?

Where To Get Cables For SuperMicro SC512L-260

Feb 8, 2007

some cables for the SuperMicro SC512L-260 case. I believe these are the correct part numbers:

CBL-0084L - Converter cable for front panel connector for non-SuperMicro motherboards

CBL-0044L - Serial ATA Cable that is compatible for use with limited space to plug into hard drives

We'd also be open to a different Serial ATA cable that would work with the case.

We're having trouble finding these in Atlanta. We'd prefer to either pick them up tomorrow, or buy them today and have them overnighted to us in Atlanta.

SATA Cables - SC512L-260B

Oct 7, 2007

We just got in our first shipment of Supermicro SC512L-260B cases. We have been using much larger and more expensive 1u (or even 2U) cases, even for base servers. I wish we had went with this chassis a long time ago.

My question is on the SATA cables. I know you can order the Supermicro CBL-0044 cable to allow connection to the hard drives in tight spaces, but these can be expensive or hard to find. I have a few coming, but does anyone have a source or know of a generic cable that will work? Or how do those of you that use this chassis route standard SATA cables? I see you might be able to go under the fan, but I'm not sure that is a good idea.
