Physical Memory Running Out
May 14, 2009
recently brought a dedicated server with fasthosts.
Currently my site has
Physical80.31% 84Mb Free (428Mb Total)
Virtual2.99% 1987Mb Free (2048Mb Total)
The physical memory has shot up, do I need to reduce it somehow?

I just ordered a server from serverbeach that should have come with 2 GB but I see that this one comes with 8 GB
Unfortunately, I seem to be missing 7 GB of ram.
Installed Physical Memory: 8 GB
Total Physical Memory: 1 GB
Windows 2008 Server Web 32-bit
Now, being a 32-bit system, I should see 3-4 GB of ram right?
Any idea why only 1 GB is available for the OS?

I had a 'VPSII' at 1and1 (Windows). The VPS II is advertised as having 256MB, and in Task Manager it would show physical memory as 450MB. When I first questioned this difference I was told the 450 included an 'allowance' for the OS - seemed reasonable.
I just upgraded to a VPSIII - which is advertised as having 512MB. Call me crazy, but I was expecting Task Manager to now report 706MB (450+256), but it only shows 550MB.
I called 1and1 and they said 'that's correct' - we give the smaller VPSs a 'boost' but not the VPSIII - WTF?
Is this anything like standard practice?

I have a Windows 2003 server with 2GB ram running IIS and SQL 2005 express. I noticed that the server only uses around 1.2GB of its physical memory (been a few days) while page file usage seems high at 1.1GB.
SQL server has been allocated a maximum 1GB of memory while IIS has no limitations on memory usage.
Server doesn't really show any slowness at this point (not a lot of traffic). But to my understanding other than the proccesses that always use some virtual memory (around 400mb usually), page file should be only used when there is insufficient physical memory? So is there something wrong with my memory usage, 1.1GB on page file while there are still almost 50% available physical ram?

My hosting company is telling me my VPS is running out of memory. Lets look at the stats of the site and the server.
Server:
Centos
384 megs of ramm
1 gig burst ramm
20 gig hard drive
cPanel
My total traffic for last month was about 7 gigs.
Webite:
Vbulletin 3.6.5 with a few mods
database is about 16 megs
99 members
The most ever online was 20
Yesterday my site started showing a database error page, instead of the website index page. The stats at the bottom of the page showed only 7 people on the site at the time. When I contacted my hosting provider, they told me I was maxing out my memory and burst ram.
So how can a website this small max out the given ram? This is really starting to TICK me off. I have left two hosting companies because of poor performance, why cant things just work right? How is my community supposed to grow if my users keep getting a database error instead of the web page?

I run a drupal site on a VPS running Lighttpd with 128MB ram and 15GB disk space. Every so often the server crashes and I have no access to even reboot via the shell, I have to get my host to reboot the VPS. They say its most likely due to the server running out of memory. I would have no more than 5 users plus 5 guests online at the same time. So my question is this...
How can I find out exactly what is consuming the memory and causing the server to crash? I have looked at drupal logs and the server logs, but I'm no wiser as to whats causing it. What should I be looking for and what can I do to try and solve this?

I have a VPS with 512 MB ram. I have 6 sites hosted on my VPS, of which 3 contains only static pages. My site is not very traffic heavy. Infact I moved to my VPS only 3 months back, until then it was running on a shared server with no problem.
But still, I am always running out of RAM. I have upgraded my account to 512 MB ram from 256MB because of this. Can anyone please tell me how I can find out what is the cause of this excessive memory usage? On rebooting my server, the RAM usage goes down to about 250MB.

an inexpensive VPS host and based on reviews on this forum, went with Web Wide Hosting.
I had a smooth signup and thanks to Jon at WWH, managed to get a payment snafu with Paypal resolved smoothly.
However, I've been struggling a lot with getting most recommended steps to actually work in my VPS and I'm getting increasingly frustrated.
The latest problem I have is that trying to install Perl modules fails with a "cannot allocate memory" error. First google hits suggest increasing memory, which really isn't an option for me right now. More puzzling is the fact that both HyperVM and user_beancounters suggest I have enough headroom atleast to install perl modules!
Output from session:

install Bundle::CPAN
reload cpan

I have a VPS and it worked well, the problem is if I install huge database which is more than 2 gigs, the VPS will hang because it has no physical ram to handle it. My host told me the only way is to get a dedicated server for a db more than 2 gigs. Dedicated servers have physical ram to deal with such db's.

Physical hack of my server?
My server (cent OS4, plesk 8) was frozen for a day and the NOC had to reboot it, here is the mail I got from my host:

After looking at the message log here is the part of the log when the crash happened:
Is this really a kernel panic, I am not sure...

I use Iptable to restrict ssh access to my IP each time I connect remotly, so I dont' think a remote connection has been possible.
any idea about this line:

I think it's just corupted data the was written when the server shutt down.
Also i didn't find any other signes of kernel panic in the logs
Looking at the httpd error log I found this lines before the crash:
[Sat Dec 08 00:44:40 2007] [error] [client 213.215.41.138] client sent HTTP/1.1 request without hostname (see RFC2616 section 14.23): /w00tw00t.at.ISC.SANS.DFind

apparently somone doing server scan. maybe the 2 events are correlated and the server freeze could have been a result of some buffer overflow attack, but i sould be finding some evidences of this on the apache logs?
What direction should I take to investigate a bit further on this server freeze?

We have a windows 2003 machine that is currently responding properly to all services that it's running (including IIS and FTP), however RDP connections just close right away and the server isn't responding when a local keyboard & monitor is plugged in.
The last thing that I want to do is pull the power out while it's on - any ideas?
I tried a remote shutdown, but the response is:
C:Users>shutdown /r /m HOSTNAME
HOSTNAME: The entered computer name is not valid or remote shutdown is not supported on the target computer. Check the name and then try again or contact your system administrator.(53)

I just built a new server using [url]and two Intel xeon 5345 clovertown processors.
When the server boots up the BIOS detects only 1 physical processor with 4 cores and also the OS detects the same.
Couple of things I already tried to solve the problem:
A. Upgraded the BIOS to the latest available release date of 05/30/07
B. I swapped the processors in the motherboard sockets to rule out that one of the processors was not working.
how to troubleshoot.

Greetings:
Are there any calculators, white papers, or other guidelines that provide guidance for sizing a physical server to be used for openvz or Virtuozzo for Linux?
i.e. if you want to run “x” VPS nodes totaling “y” disk space needing “z” number of processes, etc. you will need “n” CPU’s of at least ____ Ghz with ____ RAM, and ____ hard drive space of which ________ should be reserved for the operating system and openvz system software
Also for openvz or Virtuozzo for Linux, which RAID provides the fastest performance without trading off too much for hard drive reliability?

I have a VPS. And have had an issue both when it was 1Gig and now I recently downgraded it to 768m, because I am moving some sites to a dedicated.
However, the part I am having trouble grasping is that when I look at graphs from Munin, it will typically always show 200-400MB free memory (and free -m and top agrees with munin), but Munin shows 'committed' memory that is above the total Ram on the VPS and once the 'committed' ram exceeds the VPS limit, processes start failing.
So, why is 'committed' memory exceeding the RAM on my VPS, when Munin, free -m and top all show there is free memory available?
Code:
root@server [~]# free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 768 449 318 0 0 0
-/+ buffers/cache: 449 318
Swap: 0 0 0
Here's a graph that munin produces that shows the 'committed' memory exceeding the total memory.

I have a 512mb DV server with Mediatemple, which I am running 24 (ish) domains off (most of them static websites) and a teamspeak server. I would say MAX theres 10 users online at a time)
Now, I know its running out of memory because i get frequent QoS Alerts in plesk (kmemsize is apparently the memory size):

I have attached my results (when I did top).
My questions are:
1. Should I be expecting to be out of memory running what I am?
2. Is there a way to see the problem domains (memory wise)?
3. Are there any ways I can reduce the memory? (I have followed this already:

4. Where is the memory usage coming from (I am finding it very hard to understand TOP)

I recently signed up for a VPS server with 512 MB of RAM. I will be hosting two sites on this VPS server. One is not online yet and I just have a Coming soon page up. The other is a Wordpress blog that is running. I don't have any users yet. But my VPS server is currently using ~410 or my 512 MB. This is with essentially nothing running yet. Does anyone else run their websites with only 512 MB or do I need to upgrade to at least 1 GB? I also checked out which processes are taking up the most
(% wise):
5.6 1 /usr/bin/spamd
5.4 2 spamd
3.8 1 /usr/bin/python
3.4 1 /usr/sbin/mysqld
1.7 1 /usr/local/apache/bin/httpd
1.7 1 cpsrvd
1.7 1 cpdavd
1.6 1 /usr/sbin/restorecond
I know I can't disable apache but what about the others? Spam Assasin is disabled in the WHM but the process restarts even after I kill it. Is Python necessary? I am using php apps..

let alone with mysql. Have tried to install those both and have tried endless variations of php settings adn moving php.ini around and checked PATH in IIS adn teh extension .php is enabled.
Question:
Should php.ini be copied to Windows or Windows/system32 directory?
I have a test.php file in my virtual directory. I did have it working at one time but then I installed the extensions so I could have teh mysql extension and it hasn't worked since.
I am just a newbie trying to create a testing environment so I can teach myself PHP. I have endless books, have tried the Yanks method but I am not sure it applies to PHP5.
I have PHP at c:/program files/php/ is this a problem? Shoud it just be directly in the c directory? Does that matter?

has anyone tried this or is it completely not possible. also what linux-host virtualization software would you recommend?
note my linux vps already has kde with vnc running so i have a graphical interface to my linux vps at home.
