OS On Xen
i had set my mind on trying out xen but then problems accured...
had decided to use centos, and thought that it would work. but it wont accept it.
is redhat, suse and debian the only supportet linux distro´s with xen? or is there someway to have centos work with it?
would prefer not having to use a fortune on an OS license, that was the why I choose centos in the first place

Xen Using More Memory
I previuosly have a forum hosted on a VPS with a 512 MB RAM (OpenVZ) and at that time it was only using 300MB of ram during peak time but the server was always down due to harware failures so I move to a new host this time Using Xen with a 768 RAM now it is using all the RAM available which is double the ram that it uses before. Is it really normal for a XEN vps to consume more memory than on a VPS using OpenVZ?

Xen Install
I'm playing around with a test server, install Xen on a Centos 5 box. [url] I've tried two methods to create a vm. virt-install and virt-install -x "ip=xxx.xxx.70.212 gateway=xxx.xxx.70.211 subnet=255.255.255.248" If I do virt-install, it asks me this: (first screenshot). I have no idea what to put it. I did try this: Quote: IPv4 address: xxx.xxx.70.212__ / 255.255.255.248_ Gateway: xxx.xxx.70.211___________________________ Name Server: _________________________________________ note: only here in my post am I actually putting "xxx" in the IP for privacy reasons only. The 70.212 is the main server IP that I ssh into. See 2nd screenshot for error. Same thing with various *valid* mirrors I tried. This is my ifcfg-eth0 info: DEVICE=eth0 BOOTPROTO=static IPADDR=xxx.xxx.70.212 NETMASK=255.255.255.248 ONBOOT=yes TYPE=Ethernet

XEN And XenServer
What is the differance between Xen and XenServer? Is it correct in saying XenServer is a commercial product with advance features compared to Xen though both are hypervisor based VM. Also i saw this article [url] I always thought hypervisor based VM default OS was a custom OS built within the product but the article suggests that you can install XEN on most linux distro or i am missing something here... does this also apply to XenServer

Xen Using Too Much Memory

Lets say, I usually use about 300mb of ram in a VPS with openvz, but VPS with xen, with the same usage, is using about 820mb of ram. Even without running anything...after a fresh install of centos 5, with only few OS processes, its using around 170mb of ram already. Is this so with Xen? The expected ram usage with Xen? Or am I missing something?

Poor Xen Performance
I have been working with Xen over the last week or so and I can't figure out why the performance is downgraded so much when booting into Xen. There are certain things that seem just as fast but other things just don't seem normal. I have tried this on two different quad-core systems, one new generation (York) with CentOS5 and one old (Kent) with Debian Lenny but neither seem to produce good speeds. For example, when I use the default kernels I can usually get about ~600 score out of unixbench-wht and things such as top and core systems show up as 0% cpu when running top. When I boot into Xen kernel however, whether it been from Dom0 or the guest OS, top uses about 3% CPU and unixbench-wht produces scores under 250. I have set vcpus to 4 and have even tried vcpu-pin 0 0, 1 1, 2 2, 3 3 but nothing seems to be changing anything. The disk speeds seem about the same (hdparm). I'm assuming it is something with the CPU,

Starting A Xen Machine
I have a dedicated machine with Xen configured... Dom0 stuff runs great. I have a pre-made image from jailtime.org, with an ubuntu.7-04.img, ubuntu-7-05.xen3.cfg, and ubuntu.swap -- obviously, the actual image, the config file, and the swap file. Starting it fails: Code: $ sudo xm create ./ubuntu.7-04.xen3.cfg Using config file "././ubuntu.7-04.xen3.cfg". The config file: Code: kernel = "/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-xen" memory = "256" name = "ubuntu" vif = [ 'mac=00:01:02:03:04:07, bridge=xenbr0, vifname=vif1.0' ] dhcp = "dhcp" disk = ['file:/home/matt/vms/ubuntu-7.04/ubuntu.7-04.img,sda1,w', 'file://home/matt/vms/ubuntu-7.04/ubuntu.swap,sda2,w'] root = "/dev/sda1 ro" Actually, a couple derivative questions here... - Are the /boot and /dev/sda1 literal? That is, do they relate to Dom0 names (/boot on the server, and /dev/sda1, my "real" disk), or are they telling the new DomU what to call them? - I don't want DHCP.... Do I change dhcp to "0" / "false," or do I specify an IP? I've found a zillion guides out there, and they cover everything about setting up Xen, except for this one part, it seems?

Xen And Network Interfaces
how people handle network interfaces attached to Xen domU guests. When you give your user an IP address (or IP addresses) to use in their virtual environment, how are you isolating their interface from the rest of the system so that they cannot use an IP other than the ones you provided to them? For example, if customer A has 192.168.1.100 and customer B has 192.168.1.101.. how do you ensure that if customer A uses ifconfig to set their interface to 192.168.1.101 (customer B's IP), that customer B doesn't get affected? Is there a way to do this with iptables on the dom0 host?

Xen Performance/Overhead
I've tried asking on the xen-users mailing list, but haven't received much response. So, i'm asking here. I'm running Xen 3.1 with CentOS 5 64bit on a Dell 2950 with 2 x 2.33Ghz Quad-Core CPUs. This should/is be a very powerful system. However, when running Xen the performance drop is huge. The strange thing is, on the mailing list others were reporting much lower levels of performance loss. (Just to be clear, I'm using the XenSource compiled kernel, etc.) With Xen running, my UnixBench results aren't too bad. New VPS - Xen Hosts
I have been reading up on VPS solutions recently. I am very interested by the other thread in this forum about Xen vs Virtuozzo. I don't need a high spec VPS, just something to run a my personal web, mail, DNS etc. servers. I currently run these on an old dedicated server with 256MB RAM with no problems or slowness (I will be keeping this btw). So I have been looking at 256MB VPS plans. The discussion in the thread above seems to talk about memory management being an untrue reflection of your actual use. I haven't looked into this in enough detail yet but I think the basic idea is that with Xen you get a dedicated amount of RAM (which can't be oversold) and a properly isolated OS. Xen looks much better to me... For Xen hosts, I have come across the following slicehost.com easyvps.co.uk a2b2.com slicehost.com looks fantastic although every one of the sites they list as hosted on their servers (on their wiki page) is slow at loading for me. Anyone else notice this? They also provide servers as x86_64. Has this caused anyone problems? Any other comments on them? The VPS must has a 100MB network connection. Unmanaged is fine.
