I'm starting to do my homework on a dedicated server and am really not that savvy on what's best for my needs.
Firstly, I'm just trying to determine how much grunt I need and am not really sure of the benefits of multi-core vs single core vs single processor vs multi processor.
I've been running on a low density VPS with 1 Gig ram for a while and it's doing fine but won't handle this setup too much longer. My site does a very high amount of disk read/writing and for the size of my site there are a lot of database calls.
I'm thinking a multi-processor will do wonders for a database intensive site, but will a single multi-core process do fairly well also? My budget is at the low end and obviously I can afford more for a multi-core single processor.
say you run a script like DIGG and then it just became huge and huge and one day u find out that a server cannot run it alone, that is u need to get multi servers to cope with the traffic and database requests. How would people go about doing that? Is it the script implementation side of change or just server side of change?
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy host and I discussed over a month ago the possibility of adding on another server so that I can use one for MySQL and the other for web, and eventually as my sites expand add a third one so that two balance the loads and the one will be dedicated just for MySQL.
Well, it's been a month now and I have had a server dedicated for MySQL and the other one dedicated for web set up. A month has gone by and my host and I are having problems setting it up - I have not been able to use the new server and have already had to pay the bill when I have not been able to use it for its purpose!
The old server was supposed to act as the MySQL while the new server was supposed to be for web. We are having so many problems trying to set this up, well at least my host is, and I am becoming more and more frustrated as the days go on because I am paying for the new server that I can't even use because it's not set up properly.
I am using DirectAdmin control panel and linking them is a pain in the butt. I linked my host to this article, but I don't think he's implementing what is being instructed to do:
[url]
The new server is still not working properly with the MySQL server and I have no idea what to do here. I have already paid for a month's service for no reason and now I am starting to feel robbed because this process is taking so long.
I am willing to switch control panels if it will speed up the process. Does anybody know of any control panels that will be better suited for my need? I'd ideally like to simply manage both servers in one control panel - under one license - and manage each server's services and most importantly the MySQL and it's databases on the dedicated server for MySQL.
I am working on a busy and popular website which has a large amount of database activity - and requires hourly backups of all database data.
At the moment the site is hosted on two servers - one for the front end web server, one for the database.
Both servers are running a RAID HDD system which allows quick swaps of faulty HDDs without data loss.
An hourly full backup of database tables is running which is killing the server when it runs.
ISP has suggested installing a third server to run as a slave to the existing DB server, and hence always hold a duplicated of the live database.
I have a feeling however that this is basically just like having RAID mirroring, but on a different machine - so to solve the problem of a potential dodgy SQL statement wiping out ALL copies of the live database, we'd STILL need hourly backups to run, and hence would still see the major system speed drop each hour at the time of backup.
My friend has a problem with his php5 script and he needs php5 standalone hosting server. Anyone can suggest a good provider?
View 2 Replies View Relatedfor a SMTP server / hints at how it might be done to accomodate the following :
One single email will be sent. If it doesn't get sent on the first try by one server, another server at another location will attempt the connection and will send out the email then.
Is there a prebuilt solution that anyone knows that will help with these things ? If not, do you know of any ways that this might be possible to be done - even if you don't know the exact details of how it should be done - any help in finding out something like this would help .
Note :
Linux / Windows / FreeBSD / Solaris is fine. So whatever OS it is, it's fine by me.
I am using the following configure command in hope to generate a PHP binary which is totally independent, standalone and can be moved to other systems without caring for dependencies:
./configure --enable-fastcgi --enable-force-cgi-redirect --enable-discard-path --prefix=/server/php --exec-prefix=/server/php --with-config-file-path=/server/php --disable-all --enable-shared=no --enable-static=yes --enable-session --with-gd --with-zlib-dir --with-freetype-dir --enable-sockets
But when I try to run the generated binary on another system which doesn't have freetype etc installed, I get the following error:
error while loading shared libraries: libfreetype.so.6
I have a couple cpanel servers and am interested in setting up new server (without cpanel) that I would use as a mail server for all the other cpanel servers. This server would also interface with my mailfoundry anti-spam solution. Can someone point me to any tutorials/how-tos for setting up a standalone mail server that still works with email account creation, etc, aspects of cpanel?

Not sure if I labeled that correctly, but I am looking to setup a multi-server where I offer a cloud ssd hosting plan, and sata hosting plan. The current setup has ssd hosting, but id like to add another ip address, as well as its hard drive to host other websites on that specific server, which is sata based.
For example, I add a domain to my plesk 12 admin account and choose the added Ip address (the sata based one), where it points to that server to access the files for that specific website.
At the moment, cloudflare handles all of my dns settings.. but I am totally lost on how this needs to be setup and if I am required to purchase another plesk license. I am trying to avoid purchasing another plesk license and having to setup a whole new plesk installation just to do this.. This is a vps by the way, not a dedicated server...
I have been trying to install apache server on a windows pc which will deliver adobe HDS content. there is a specific tutorial for this in the adobe site, can be found here. I have been following it to the word, but when I try to start apache after asking it to load new modules (mod_f4fhttp), it returns me an error saying that the file is not readable/not found. I have installed the proper visual c++ libraries and also checked the permissions and spellings. This seems to be a common error with php modules in apache, but none of the solutions seems to work.

A customer of mine for about 2 years just left for "Greener" pastures with a big time overselling host. Out of curiosity, I did a lookup search on his new IP using domaintools.
The result revealed that his website now resides on a server that has a little over 10,000 sites hosted on it.
My question goes thus:
What type of server efficiently holds such quantity of websites or could he be in for one hell of a ride?
[url]
Is there a way to tell how many, and the domain names, of all the sites assigned to one server or IP address on a shared hosting server? When I do a lookup on my server's IP address, it only points back to my hosting company. If I ping my domain, I get my IP address, so it seems reasonable that there's probably a way to find this out. I thought I had seen a post here about this, but searched for quite awhile, and couldn't find it.
I noticed my server's CPanel CPU Service Status went from about .4 (green) to 1.6 (red), and has pretty much stayed there the last few hours. It indicates it's a 1 CPU server. I was curious how many sites there were, and even what they were, to see if I could determine who or why the server usage is spiking.
I'm trying to learn more about hosting, and was curious about this aspect of shared hosting. I'm also looking for a way to throttle my own site to avoid causing a spike on my server. Does anyone know of a way I can ensure that my CPU usage does not exceed a predetermined amount so my hosting company won't pull the plug? Would throttling the bandwidth be possible, and perhaps a way to achieve that?
I decided to take the leap from a shared plan on godaddy to a good quality vps. I wanted to avoid the slowness and support I've experienced. Today for fun I found one of those tools that show you how many domains are sharing your ip. It says my website is on the same IP as 600 other sites! Is that all on a single server sharing resources?
I'm excited to see how my site runs on a 384mb vps. Probably even more than I need, but exciting none the less.
I am facing a strange issue with two RPG games sites that i am hosting on a 2GB ram server with softlayer, each of these sites was running on a 512MB VPS and they were doing fine but i decided to move them to better server so things run smoother when each has 50+ members online.
So the issue is when i have around 40 online members on each site, they start coughing up mysql errors, sometimes the sites just hang and stop loading, server load goes up to 3 or 4 but memory usage remains around 40%, I also notice that mysql uses the most of the CPU usage, around 75%
What i probably need is for someone to identify the cause of this, can it be an attack of some sort? or is it probably some code issues in the sites? do you recommend anyone that can have a look at this?
time for a fun thread started for no other reason than morbid curiosity.
For those who would like to brag, how many websites have you dared to cram onto a single server? I don't mean parked/aliased domains that point to a single webiste; I'm talking about separate, unique, individual websites.
I know there are a lot of shared-server hosting companies that offer to host an "unlimited" number of domains from your $5/mo. hosting account, and I'm sure there are a few crazies out there who actually allow (tens of?) thousands of websites on a single server, regardless of performance issues.
Our policy is no more than 500 unique websites per physical server. This is NOT because of resource usage problems (average CPU utilization is well below 10%) but because we want to limit the number of sites affected if a server crashes, or God forbid, gets hacked. Based on how low resource utilization is, even our P4 servers should be able to host thousands of sites without resource starvation. (P4 3.0 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 2x750 SATA disks in RAID1)
So how about it? It's your chance to brag. How many sites have you dared to stuff on 1 server, and what were the specs of the server?
I am about to host my sites. We have a lot of data that we do not want to put in hosting companies.
My specs are:
Intel Xeon processor
Chipset: Intel E7520
Independent PCI buses: 4
Total Slots: 3 x GB LAN
Memory capacity: 16BG DDR2 400 ECC Registered
Integrated LAN: 2 x GB LAN
Integrated Graphics: ATI age XL 8MB
Server management support: Intel Serer Management 8
RAID support: RAID 0, 1, 10, 50
Drive bays: 12 x hotswaps SATA II
Will this be okay to host around 10 websites? I am knowledgeable in Hosting hardware.
A little confused about some technical aspects of a setup.
If anyone knows what I am trying to say please advise.
Question :
There are 4 WAN connections.
Conn01 = 10mbps upload Line with IP 111.111.111.111
Conn02 = 1mbps upload Line with IP 222.222.222.222
Conn03 = 100mbps download / 1mbpx upload Line with IP 333.333.333.333
Conn04 = Dialup line at 56kbps with IP 444.444.444.444
If I connect all these to a Multi WAN Router lets say Linksys RV016.
1) When a client tries to upload something to the server with IP 444.444.444.444 will it still run at 56kbps or will it be load balanced into the fastest line which is 10mbps.
2) When a Client's server connected at 111.111.111.111 tries to download something from the internet to this multi WAN setup, does he get a max of 10mbps or will he be routed to the 100mbps?
way to know the sites that make load on the server through SSH
View 5 Replies View Relatedwe're a webdesign company who also sell hosting (white labled). we have over 500 websites hosted with a company (based at telehouse in london - which is a good selling point for us when selling hosting packages). Theyve been really good (reliable servers, good support, good control panel etc...). Theyve also won awards for the reliability of their servers. Unfortunatley, over the past year we've noticed theyve raised their charges by quite a bit and the support has been very poor.
My question is: does anyone reccommend a company we can move all our sites to? this is obviously business critical (not only for us but for all our clients too!), and so we want to be absolutely certain of the company and what they can offer before we move over everything.
We've thought about a dedicated server with 1&1. It would be a fraction of the cost, but I always believe in 'you get what you pay for'. could this be the case here?

One of my clients sites has just been hacked and im pretty sure its through the hosting and not the scripting, although the host us not being very helpfull.
What I want to do is see what other sites are on the shared account to see if any of them are having problems. As a coincidence the server has 'gone down' not long after being hacked which makes me think the host has pulled it.
I remember years ago (at least I hope I didnt dream it) that a website told me all the other sites on my server, probably by using some kind of reverse lookup on the IP, servers are not my strong point so I dont know.
where I can find this tool,
Im using RHE 4 + cpanel
Im considering Suhosin, in fact i am using it in other plain server were i have 1 or 2 sites. But this is a very high traffic with 300 + sites, lot of sites are using cms apps..
may it cause conflicts with this apps?
I am starting a small template based company. How many unique websites in their own unique folder can I host on a single server?
These websites would not get many hits, maybe a few hundread to a few thousand a month per site. My goal is to minimize the number of accounts I will have to open up with a web service provider.
Should I purchase 1 package per site or is there a way to get around this. Each unique site would have its own unique domain.
