Sep 30, 2009Ive been doing alot of searching and not found anything half decent about ukservers and not found anything bad either suppose thats a good sign
is anyone with ukservers, would you recommend them? if you would why would you etc.
my current host for some reason doesnt want to invoice me to get an order processed and im fed up of waiting specially considering ive got about 300 people depending on me to get a server online and setup by 10th october.

Jun 15, 2009A lot is known about e-mail spammers, both due to lots of investigations into them and due to some "ex-spammers" talking about what they've done. And it's widely known that they're using infected PCs now.
But what about comment spam? I've been dealing with it a lot at work, and am noticing some oddities. A good amount tends to come from countries where labor can be had cheaply, and watching logs on pages with captchas suggests that they're doing it slowly enough that they're probably just doing it by hand. Unlike the scripts I'd been used to (which would just hammer out POST requests to forms as fast as they could), some spammers are now loading pages on which the comment form resides, waiting a few seconds, and then submitting the spam with a sensible HTTP referrer -- it's as if someone is actually sitting there and copying-and-pasting spam. It seems really odd to me that someone is actually sitting there manually posting spam, though.
Comment spam tends to come from a few areas of the world -- the poverty-stricken parts of Asia; Russia, Africa, and Latin America in particular -- and yet it's often hyping products in other parts of the world. Has anyone found what I'm thinking are US-owned shops paying third-world spammers? Is that what's actually happens?
And other nonsense reigns. Some of the spam getting posted to my employer's site links to sites that, according to whois records, have never existed. A LOT of other spam has egregious formatting errors -- BBCode on a site that doesn't support it, or malformed links (mysite.com/www.spamsite.com) posted over and over again. It's like they're either so clueless that they have no idea that their spam doesn't work, or that they're just being paid by post or something and so they don't even care if the links work.
Has anyone (not necessarily personally) ever tracked down exactly what this "industry" is up to? Even though it seems like a simple extension of e-mail spam, there's a lot of odd behavior that makes me think it's actually quite different, and now I'm really curious.

CRON Job Timing Out
Sep 19, 2007i have had a problem for some time now, regarding my CRON jobs. I am trying to download a large amount of data from ebay (through their API, totally legal and aboveboard) using php, but my CRONjob times out.
I have tried resetting the timeout variable, but then it exceeds the maximum filesize
SO, my question: is there any way to have a script run as a CRON job, and wen it is complete, call another script?

Apr 5, 2009Hey everyone, my friend's dad is looking for a web host that will allow his cron jobs to run every second. Most hosts apparently dont allow cron jobs faster than 5 seconds apart.
How often a host can run cron jobs isn't really advertised on their sites so I'm having a bit of trouble finding a host. I've resorted to just sending emails to sales addresses asking about it.
Does anyone know how I can find a host like this?
Reboot Cron Job
Aug 20, 2007VPS isn't rebooting by itself when it goes down. Anyone has any program/script that monitors heartbeat of the server? Like when it goes down, the program will automatically reboots the system. I know there's such a script out there but I forgot what it called.

I have heard mixed reports and can't find any good info. Personally i've run a cronjob for up to 6 minutes, but as my best method was sending myself emails through php, its not exactly a highly accurate testing method.
On the same note, what would happen if one cronjob is running a php script for over 10 minutes, then another cron job starts on the same script, before the first one has finished?

Sep 27, 2006I have my own server. I create php file for adding cronjobs. I checked /etc/cron.deny and /etc/cron.allow. both of them is empty so no problem. I execute the php script but nothing : I check with crontab -u user l and it told me no cronjobs for that user. When I access as root from ssh and try teh same command, it works fine. I don't understand how to fix that.

This is how I envisage it to work:
1: rename '.htacess' (in public_html folder for the site) to .htaccess-open
2: rename '.htaccess-closed' to .htaccess

I'm trying to create a script cron that will email my clients once per month with space and bandwidth useage reminders. I'd prefer not to have to set up crons in each individual account, but rather email all with tokening including |name| |bandwidth| |space| out of the allowed space & bandwidth according to the clients package.

I would like to have MySQLDUMP dump my specified database(s) into a specified folder using date and time stamps in the filename.
I've done some searching on this but haven't really came up with a way to do all of this at once, or if I may need to setup a cron job to rename the file after the dump has completed. I may be going about this all wrong to begin with, I'm just looking for a very simple and reliable way to backup my databases.
I'm testing this on a Shared Web Host account at this time which does have SSH shell access, but I wasn't sure if this makes a difference.
