Compiling Mod_security With PCRE (significant Performance Increase)

Jan 27, 2007

From the ModSecurity manual:

Quote:

By default ModSecurity relies on the regular expression library built into Apache for pattern matching.
This works well with Apache 2.x but not so much with Apache 1.x. The Apache 1.x regular expression
engine is several times slower. Since 1.9.2 it is possible to compile ModSecurity for Apache 1.x against
an external regular expression library (PCRE, [url] the same library used in Apache 2.x)
and achieve significant performance increase. This is achieved with the USE_PCRE compile-time flag.

If you have PCRE already installed on your system it may be sufficient to compile ModSecurity like this:

Code:
# <apache1-home>/bin/apxs -DUSE_PCRE -cia mod_security.c

Ok, so I tried and got this error:

Code:
[root@servidor1 customapache]# apxs -DUSE_PCRE -cia mod_security.c
gcc -DLINUX=22 -DHAVE_SET_DUMPABLE -I/usr/include/gdbm -DMOD_SSL=208128 -DUSE_HSREGEX -DEAPI -fpic -DSHARED_MODULE -I/usr/include/apache -DUS
E_PCRE -c mod_security.c
mod_security.c:37:18: pcre.h: No such file or directory
mod_security.c: In function `my_pregcomp':
mod_security.c:929: error: `PCRE_CASELESS' undeclared (first use in this function)
mod_security.c:929: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once
mod_security.c:929: error: for each function it appears in.)
mod_security.c:929: warning: assignment makes pointer from integer without a cast
mod_security.c: In function `my_regexec':
mod_security.c:940: error: `PCRE_ERROR_NOMATCH' undeclared (first use in this function)
apxs:Break: Command failed with rc=1
I double checked if I have PCRE installed:

Code:
[root@servidor1 customapache]# yum search pcre
pcre.i386 4.5-3.2.RHEL4 installed
Matched from:
pcre
Perl-compatible regular expression library.
PCRE has its own native API, but a set of "wrapper" functions that are based on
the POSIX API are also supplied in the library libpcreposix. Note that this
just provides a POSIX calling interface to PCRE: the regular expressions
themselves still follow Perl syntax and semantics. The header file
for the POSIX-style functions is called pcreposix.h.
[url]
And I even located the /lib/libpcre.so.0.0.1 and copied it to /usr/lib/apache/libpcre.so, with no sucess. Got the same error.

Has anyone sucessfully compiled mod_security with PCRE and can help me?

What Increase In Performance To Expect

May 2, 2009

I'm considering upgrading our company's server. We run an ecommerce site php/mysql based, we have about 12,000 visitors per day and we use up about 1500 gig per month. Simple ecommerce site, nothing fancy. We had some complains from people that our site is "slow" (despite it running smoothly for us, but these people claimed that only our site was "slow" and that they use fast connections) so that's why now I'm thinking maybe its time to upgrade.

We are using softlayer, for an extra $50 per month they recommended that we upgrade from our Opteron 1216 to "Xeon 3220 - 2.40GHz (Kentsfield) - 2 x 4MB cache"

Are we going to see a serious increase in performance? Will the increase be enough that most visitors will actually be able to feel it?

Dramatically Increase Your Performance Of Web Server By Disk Cache

Jun 22, 2009

it took me one year to develop the disk cache tool which can dramatically boost your host and save your harddisk. it is like supercache, but more cheap and better speed.

check picture to see what it can do.

i will offer free download to test the tool by first 10 people. if u host huge traffic website, do not hesitate to try it. i already test it for half a year. it is time to publish it. pm me or post here to get free download.

i open to any opinion about the tool.

Ping Time Significant

Sep 16, 2008

We're considering moving from our current vps host with a California datacenter to a host with their datacenter in Chicago for support reasons... this will mean going from 15 ms ping times to around 75 ms. All of our clients will be running their own wordpress installations...and most of them are on the west coast as well... is the ping time difference significant or not?

PCRE Unicode

Mar 31, 2009

I've been looking around for this for hours now and i can't seem to get my head around it. The situation is this:

I have been creating a PHP script for a while now, which extensively uses unicode characters and checking. Now during development, i only checked it on my localhost installation and a virtual linux machine. It all worked there.

Yesterday it was finished and i uploaded it to a beta site for testing, and i found that PHP doesn't recognise unicode regular expressions (perl compatible).

I think that my installed PCRE version is not compiled with UTF8 support. I could not find any updated RPM's for my Fedora installation, so i went ahead and downloaded the latest PCRE, compiled it with unicode support and installed it into the same path as the old one.

I thought that would fix it, but both linux and PHP still claim the old version is installed.

I'm completely lost now. I can't Remove the old version through Yum since that would remove over 450 packages from the system, making both the system and Plesk unusable.

Is there anyone here who knows how to handle this? I usually fix my own stuff, but somehow this is way beyond what i did before

System: Fedora Core 5
PCRE: 6.3

Lighttpd With Pcre Support, Possible Bug Maybe

Jul 31, 2007

I just installed lighttpd from source and used the following options:

Code:
./configure --host=i686-redhat-linux-gnu
--build=i686-redhat-linux-gnu
--target=i386-redhat-linux
--program-prefix= --prefix=/usr
--exec-prefix=/usr
--bindir=/usr/bin
--sbindir=/usr/sbin
--sysconfdir=/etc
--datadir=/usr/share
--includedir=/usr/include
--libdir=/usr/lib
--libexecdir=/usr/libexec

--sharedstatedir=/usr/com
--mandir=/usr/share/man
--infodir=/usr/share/info

--with-zlib
--with-bzip2
--disable-ipv6
--with-PACKAGE=mod_redirect
--with-rewrite
--with-redirect
--with-ssi
--with-linux-aio
--with-lua

Now the config i'm going to use is the one lxadmin (host-in-abox) generated for me. I'm basically just trying to install lighttpd with LUA support, but I couldn't figure out how to do that with YUM. Anyway, when i try to load lighty with the lxadmin config, it says i don't have PCRE support when clearly i have it installed.

Code:
/usr/sbin/lighttpd -V

Features:

- IPv6 support
- zlib support
- bzip2 support
+ crypt support
- SSL Support
+ PCRE support
- mySQL support
- LDAP support
- memcached support
- FAM support
+ LUA support
- xml support
- SQLite support
- GDBM support

[root@server lighttpd-1.4.16]# lighttpd start -f /etc/lighttpd/lighttpd.conf
can't handle '$HTTP[url] =~ ...' as you compiled without pcre support.
(perhaps just a missing pcre-devel package ?)
2007-07-31 18:46:09: (configfile.c.853) source: /etc/lighttpd/lighttpd.conf line: 132 pos: 3 parser failed somehow near here: {
I also have the pcre-devel package installed. YUM says i do anyway.
pcre-devel.i386 6.6-1.1 installed
pcre.i386 6.6-1.1 installed

Code:
[root@server lighttpd-1.4.16]# rpm -qa pcre
pcre-6.6-1.1

Any idea what's going on? Alternatively, i would love a solution on how to install the RPM package with LUA support, as i think it's possible?

Code:
lighttpd.i386 1.4.15-1 installed

JaguarPC Performance VS. LiquidWeb Performance

Jul 13, 2007

I am using dreamhost host 3 of my web sites and 1 blog. Dreamhost is great, offers alot space and bandwidth.

but I think they are oversellling their space, sometimes it gets really slow. (overselling ? ok, I dont really know, but sometimes its really slow, and most my asian readers said need to refresh to load the page. I am wondering if theres a way to check if they are overselling or not.)

I am thinking about buying vps, even tho, I still got 5 month left with dreamhost.

I found 2 vps companies are highly recommanded on this forum, JaguarPC and LiquidWeb.

theres already a post compared both companies in terms of price and service. I say I will pick JagarPc, cuz, its basic plan just 20 USD, and htey got promotion now, its even cheaper. and basic Liquidweb vps plan is 60 bucks.

I am wondering why Jagarpc is so cheap , are they overselling? how can we check if they are overselling.

I found a few posts saying how good jaguarPc is. and they are not overselling, but those members just signed up this month, and only have 1-3 posts. I cannot really trust those new members.

Can someone share their experience with JaguarPC? compare JaguarPc performance and liquidweb performance. antoher question is switch from dreamhost to JaguarPC basic vPS plan, will performance gets better?

last question: VPS account allows 3 IP, 3ip = 3 domains? if not, how many domains can I have?

Re-Compiling PHP

Aug 7, 2007

I was recently faced with a problem, i had to install some extensions which were not included by default with php (libcurl being one of them). I didn't have a clue what to do, but because my dedicated server is running debian, i had to force myself to learn.

Anyway, back to the point. I already have php5 running (but it needs to be re-compiled) and i have downloaded libcurl. I used apt-get install php5-curl and that took care of it. The questions are:

To recompile do i need to remove the old installation of PHP before compiling it again to add the extensions?

Do i need enable the extensions like mysql and stuff or do they install as default if not specified, im guessing i would need to specify everything?

Im used to downloading a pre compiled package, running the installer and away we go, actually its MAMP on OSX. I remember in windows you could just add the extension in the .ini i later learned in OSX and Linux its not as easy.

Compiling PHP Error

Mar 21, 2008

I recently tried upgrading my test VPS to run PHP 6.0, and it worked.

However I wasn't able to get MySQL to compile with PHP.

Hence I just reinstalled MySQL and tried recompiling PHP (from source) again. However I still get errors when compiling PHP:

checking for MySQL support... yes
checking for specified location of the MySQL UNIX socket... no
checking for MySQL UNIX socket location... /var/tmp/mysql.sock
configure: error: Cannot find libmysqlclient under /usr/local.
Note that the MySQL client library is not bundled anymore!

No matter what ./configure command I run, I can't seem to get this working. For example, the PHP INSTALL documentation (comes with the source files) actually says running:

./configure --with-apxs2=/usr/local/apache2/bin/apxs --with-mysql

Will work fine. However it doesn't. I've also tried specifying the MySQL directory, to no success.

Just as some extra information, libmysqlclient is at:

-bash-3.00# find /usr -name libmysqlclient*
/usr/lib/libmysqlclient.so.6
/usr/lib64/libmysqlclient.so
/usr/lib64/libmysqlclient.so.14
/usr/lib64/libmysqlclient_r.so
/usr/lib64/mysql/libmysqlclient.a
/usr/lib64/mysql/libmysqlclient.la
/usr/lib64/mysql/libmysqlclient_r.a
/usr/lib64/mysql/libmysqlclient_r.la
/usr/lib64/mysql/libmysqlclient.so
/usr/lib64/mysql/libmysqlclient_r.so
/usr/lib64/libmysqlclient.so.15
/usr/lib64/libmysqlclient.so.15.0.0
/usr/lib64/libmysqlclient_r.so.15
/usr/lib64/libmysqlclient_r.so.15.0.0
/usr/local/lib64/libmysqlclient.so.14
/usr/local/cpanel/lib64/libmysqlclient.so.14

However specifying the MySQL directories as "/usr/lib64, /usr/bin, /usr/lib64/mysql, /usr/local/lib64 or /usr/lib" doesn't seem to work.

The complete configure command I've tried running is: "./configure --with-apxs2=/usr/local/apache/bin/apxs --prefix=/usr/local/ --with-icu-dir=/usr/local/icu --with-pspell --with-mysql"

Apr 26, 2008

I have always used RPM kernels from the RedHat Network, in this time I need to compile an SMP kernel in a server that is used to serve common webhosting traffic (web, ftp, email, etc) with cPanel.

I have compiled kernels from source in desktops stations, but never in remote servers.. do you have any recommendations to do this at a Dual Xeon 3.2 RHE 5 + cPanel server? Oh.. almost forgot.. I will also compile it with GRsecurity.

Should I use a src kernel from RedHat, or a kernel.org latest kernel?

Should I use it or should I avoid it?

Compiling PHP Zip Extension Onto A Mac That Has MAMP Pro

Mar 10, 2008

compiling the zip extension for my MAMP installation. I used this tutorial here (using phpize):

All is well.. but when I run make test it gives me this:

1. compiling the zip.so fails...

2. Some directories are wrongly set, because my extension .so files reside in /mamp/bin/php5/lib/php/extensions/no-debug-non-zts-20050922/

I see no "modules" in there, so..

Compiling Apache/PHP/Mysql Under X86_64

Feb 9, 2007

I'm wondering if there are special notes on compiling sever softwares under x86_64 (CentOS 4.4 64bit, Pentium D)? Are there any specific flags for extra optimizations? Or the regular "./configure" will compile things in x86_64 by default?

Compiling PHP5 With Mysql & Mysqli Support

Jun 15, 2009

While trying to compile PHP 5 with mysql and mysqli , I was facing some issues.

Actually, the configure command generates a bad Makefile.

Open the Makefile and look for a line staring with EXTRA_LIBS

You will see that the option “-lmysqlclient” is repeated twice. Delete one of them and save the Makefile.

Now, you should be able to run the Make command and compile PHP without any issues.
