Best Hardware For Xen?
I'm looking to purchase hardware to specifically run Xen.. What is the best hardware to run Xen? Will the new Intel Xeon (Woodcrest) work? If not then what would you recommend? AMD?
If you want to recommend specific models please recommend supermicro MBs.

OS On Xen
i had set my mind on trying out xen but then problems accured... had decided to use centos, and thought that it would work. but it wont accept it. is redhat, suse and debian the only supportet linux distro´s with xen? or is there someway to have centos work with it? would prefer not having to use a fortune on an OS license, that was the why I choose centos in the first place

Going to pick up a new server here. What would be the difference between: 2x 146gb scsi 15k raide1 vs 4x250gb sata II Raide10 The purpose of this server is php/mysql etc, but other then the size do they fair to eachother well ? Of course I am worried about data access speed etc.

When building a rackmount 1u server, do you have to use a "server" motherboard, or would a socket F atx motherboard with an opteron be just fine?

Hardware
to change a few servers due to current performance issues. A client requested he wanted some budget VPS boxes (running MS Server 2003 Enterprise R2/SP2 and VMWare Server) to run just a couple of VPS's which only run voice servers (Ventrilo and Teamspeak). The specifications we used for him was: Asus Desktop Mobo (AM2 Socket, NForce 430 chipset) AMD X2 6000+ (3.0Ghz) Software Raid 0+1 (Made out of 4x40GB SATA2 Drives) 8GB RAM (4x2GB DDR2 PC5400) As referenced in another post, we are finding some weird issues with the network card drivers giving some weird results. (post can be found here.) We are now finding that the network card situation is starting to give a degraded service to the clients voice servers. Each server is running 2 VPS instances (running MS. Server 2003 Enterprise). We are seeing weird results such as packet loss and funky pings via the ventrilo client/teamspeak client software. Via the software I ping 104ms, via DOS I ping a mere 18ms. Because of these issues we have no option but too change the hardware specs to a level that suit the clients needs. We are currently running cacti to monitor the servers but we are seeing some wierd broken results such as no results at some polls on just our vps boxes (other hardware is perfectly fine). This kinda points at me that the motherboards just cant keep the load. Too add to the matter, I don't think the current software raid can cope too well from the looks of the cacti monitoring.. Graph is attached below to see multiple read/write queues. My general plan was to change the motherboard to: Change to this motherboard:[url] Add this RAID card instead of Software RAID: [url] Replace CPU with: Xeon Quadcore 5335 Processor (leaving second CPU socket empty for future expansion if required). Change the memory to ECC and decrease to 4GB. Monitor it until more is required as 8GB might of been overkill). Is this overkill? Or would I better of just looking at a Supermicro PDSBA motherboard and a nice Core2Quad Q6600 or a E6600 processor. Or as another option, a higher quality AM2 socket mobo with a working network card/drivers for it to function better such as: [url]

Xen Using More Memory
I previuosly have a forum hosted on a VPS with a 512 MB RAM (OpenVZ) and at that time it was only using 300MB of ram during peak time but the server was always down due to harware failures so I move to a new host this time Using Xen with a 768 RAM now it is using all the RAM available which is double the ram that it uses before. Is it really normal for a XEN vps to consume more memory than on a VPS using OpenVZ?

Xen Install
I'm playing around with a test server, install Xen on a Centos 5 box. [url] I've tried two methods to create a vm. virt-install and virt-install -x "ip=xxx.xxx.70.212 gateway=xxx.xxx.70.211 subnet=255.255.255.248" If I do virt-install, it asks me this: (first screenshot). I have no idea what to put it. I did try this: Quote: IPv4 address: xxx.xxx.70.212__ / 255.255.255.248_ Gateway: xxx.xxx.70.211___________________________ Name Server: _________________________________________ note: only here in my post am I actually putting "xxx" in the IP for privacy reasons only. The 70.212 is the main server IP that I ssh into. See 2nd screenshot for error. Same thing with various *valid* mirrors I tried. This is my ifcfg-eth0 info: DEVICE=eth0 BOOTPROTO=static IPADDR=xxx.xxx.70.212 NETMASK=255.255.255.248 ONBOOT=yes TYPE=Ethernet

XEN And XenServer
What is the differance between Xen and XenServer? Is it correct in saying XenServer is a commercial product with advance features compared to Xen though both are hypervisor based VM. Also i saw this article [url] I always thought hypervisor based VM default OS was a custom OS built within the product but the article suggests that you can install XEN on most linux distro or i am missing something here... does this also apply to XenServer

Xen Using Too Much Memory

Lets say, I usually use about 300mb of ram in a VPS with openvz, but VPS with xen, with the same usage, is using about 820mb of ram. Even without running anything...after a fresh install of centos 5, with only few OS processes, its using around 170mb of ram already. Is this so with Xen? The expected ram usage with Xen? Or am I missing something?

VPS Hardware
I've got a vBulletin site with about 2500 members and 150k posts. It has been averaging about 18-24GB bandwidth for the last 12 months and about 100+ concurrent connections, with spikes on Saturdays (college football related) or special events up over 200+ concurrent. It has been hosted on BlueHost since February of 2007 and never has had any issues aside from when we max out our account and get the "CPU Exceeded" error messages. With our continued growth, we definitely need to move and get into something that will allow for sustained growth and to handle the high traffic days so we're not turning off potential members when they see the site errors. I've spoke to a couple other vBulletin forum owners and they feel I'm at a point where I need to move to a VPS. Can anyone recommend what I'm looking for hardware-wise to maintain our growth and be able to handle the traffic?

SAS Hardware
as I understand it, one of the huge advantages of sas is supposed to be the expansion in the number of supported drives. I have two questions: 1) sas arrays are supposed to be able to be HUGE. capable of supporting thousands of disks. how is an array like that-- or even of dozens of disks-- supposed to be managed? can a single raid card really stand up to all that strain? 2) I am absolutely unable to find sas expanders no matter where I look. without the expanders, I'm stuck to 4, 6 or 8 drives on a single array. very frustrating. do they go by another name? could you link to a place that sells them?

Server Hardware
I've used leased servers for a long time and would eventually like to get into purchasing my own. I've been out of the hardware market for a little while so I started just looking at servers and I had a few things that I was just not clear on.. To start I was looking at the Dell 2950 and I just was not sure what a few things were used for... 1. "Backplane:" I understand the difference between 2.5 and 3.5 inch drives but they have a 1x4 and a 1x6 listed. I assume that has to do with either having 4 or 6 drives but can someone please elaborate a little more on this? Webopedia and wikipedia had no info at all. 2. "Primary Controller/2nd Controller/Hard Drive Configuration:" I fully understand the different forms of RAID and their individual advantages. What I don't get is what is the purpose in having up to 3 different controller cards other than redundancy. Since the machine has an integrated RAID controller what is the purpose on there for the Primary and Secondary controllers (other than to connect to external data vaults). If you wanted to do RAID 1 for 2 drives or RAID 5 (for more than 2 drives) which configuration would you pick there?

US Hardware -> UK Colocation
I am planning to buy a dell hardware from US and then want to use it in a UK datacenter, but I have a few questions in regards. 1) Are the prongs in US adaptable to the ones used in UK? 2) Are there any voltage changes that need to be considered or will the PSU automatically take care of that? 3) I know some routers have some legal stuff which prohibit them from being taken out of the country. Is there a similar restriction with servers? I haven't found any such information on overseas transport on dell's website. Buying in Dell UK is NOT an option as I've tried that venue and a specific configuration I want is available only in Dell US.

Poor Xen Performance
I have been working with Xen over the last week or so and I can't figure out why the performance is downgraded so much when booting into Xen. There are certain things that seem just as fast but other things just don't seem normal. I have tried this on two different quad-core systems, one new generation (York) with CentOS5 and one old (Kent) with Debian Lenny but neither seem to produce good speeds. For example, when I use the default kernels I can usually get about ~600 score out of unixbench-wht and things such as top and core systems show up as 0% cpu when running top. When I boot into Xen kernel however, whether it been from Dom0 or the guest OS, top uses about 3% CPU and unixbench-wht produces scores under 250. I have set vcpus to 4 and have even tried vcpu-pin 0 0, 1 1, 2 2, 3 3 but nothing seems to be changing anything. The disk speeds seem about the same (hdparm). I'm assuming it is something with the CPU,
