Backing Up In CPanel
I have a cPanel control panel for my site and noticed the backup feature.

Now my site consists of a homepage and a vBulletin forum. If I use the cPanel backup feature will this backup my entire vBulletin forum as well?

I just want something where I can backup on a weekly basis with a click of a button if possible.

Also, is it simply a case of clicking a few buttons to restore the backup should I need to at a later date?

Backing Up DBs Without CPanel
I just ran into a problem. My cPanel license expired, and im in the middle of moving my site over to a new host.

However I cant access any of my sites cPanel,so i can go straight to phpmyadmin to backup.

My question would be:

Is it posible to backup all DBs in the server via shh?

Or is it posible to upload phpmyadmin to every sites root folder and after configuring

it to access the DBs?

Backing Up Cpanel With Remote Ftp?
I need to have a windows PC on my internal network connect via sftp and download the generated backups on my webserver.

What files do I need?

I'd like to do it on a daily basis as I run local tape backups every night.

My backups are being put into /backup/cpbackup/daily/ but there is a tarball, dirs/, and files/.

Do I just need to download the tarball? I was hoping to do this with psftp and the windows task manager so that I wouldn't have to do it manually every day.

Best Option Backing Up Cpanel Server To A Cloud
I'd like to back one of our servers up using S3 but I'm not sure the best way to go. Server is using CPanel. Obviously I want to keep costs down.

I need the files to be secure, backups need to be nightly incremental, and I need to be able to restore to another CPanel server fast in case of hardware failure. CPanel supports FTP for backups. I currently back up to another server, but I want to move to the cloud.

Specific questions I have:

1. Any recommendations on a cloud backup service (S3, Rackspace, etc?), and why?

2. Any recommendations on tools? I want this to be simple to set up. As easy as setting up an FTP account.

3. Is there another option I should consider? That server has about 62GB of data on it to be backed up.

Invalid Command 'php_flag' - After Recompiling PHP & Apache?
After I recompiled Apache and PHP using easyapache from cPanel, we started getting all these weird errors. I'm getting a few people now complaining about not being able to enable register_globals. I believe (after searching) that having this enabled is a big security risk and shouldn't need to be used. However, some people apparently where using .haccess and php_flag to enable this. I did find on a few places that people can create their own php.ini file to emulate what was previously done with .htaccess?

After searching around..

I found out that Register Globals can become a security risk based on the scripts configuration that uses it. This feature normally can be enabled via .htaccess using the glad "php_flag register_globals On". Creating a file called php.ini inside the directory of the site with the flag "register_globals=on" I believe will also enable this option. To enable this option on a global scale, you can edit '/usr/local/cpanel/3rdparty/etc/php.ini', but its not recommended.

However.. We are unable to get the php.ini concept to work. Is there something I need to do to enable/allow users to do this for their account?

Any 'easy' Smtp / Pop / Imap Package Or Installer W/o Having To Read Up On Exim Etc.?
any 'easy' smtp / pop / imap package or installer w/o having to read up on exim etc.?

I want an email server quickly, w/o having to become an expert...

I'd go w/ a hosted service, but I open allot of pop3 connections... (program I use downloads one email, closes connection, reopens... repeat)...

There's lots of cookbooks out there, but they require quite a bit more time commitment (and configurability) than I want / need.

Is there any dumbified installs available? I tried with webmin, but even that wants me to manually configure a postfix / imap server bridge.=

Qmail - I'm Afraid I Wasn't Able To Deliver Your Message
Basically a client has been getting really bad email problems with their email. They keep getting the standard qmail msg back from several emails. I originally thought this msg was being returned as it was an invalid receipients address, but they are assuring me that this is not the case?

Anyway the basic msg they are getting is:

Hi. This is the qmail-send program at p16489287.pureserver.info.
I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses.
This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out ....

BoxVPS = Useless | STAY AWAY From This 'company'
URL: http://www.boxvps.com

Their recent promotion thread:

http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=889733

Extremely non-professional service. Took them 48 hours to setup my VPS. Also had to create a support ticket. And when it was finally delivered, there was no DirectAdmin on it. Specially disturbing, since I actually paid for a monthly license.

Not to mention that their responses are very vague. They claim to apply the promotions (triple disk space, double bandwidth) 24 hours after they setup the VPS. I have no idea why they do that.

Moreover, they have false advertising on their VPS page (Instant Activation..where it should read 'We don't activate your VPS unless you create a support ticket).

A speedtest from the VPS showed that the VPS is capable of bursting to a maximum of 10mbps, while average speed is barely 2mbps.

Stay away from these guys. They're potential scammers. They WILL scam.. sooner or later.

Looking For Host That Supports $_SERVER['PATH_INFO']
I am finishing up on my clients site and the ecommerce software we use has an option for search engine friendly URL's but your server must support $_SERVER['PATH_INFO'] . My client is hosted by GoDaddy and my host (HostGator) does not support it unless you go dedicated.

I need $_SERVER['PATH_INFO']
Dedicated IP, PHP, MySQL, .htaccess support
preferably CPanel - not Plesk
Less than $120 / year

I am looking for a well established company like the ones I previously mentioned because my client wants peace of mind and I don't want to screw him over.

The issue is that the email address that it is being sent to is a domain/website that is also on cpanel. It is trying to deliver it to a local account, but the email is acutally on a third party system outside of cpanel. Does anyone know anyway for exim to not try and deliver locally?

Cpanel Master User
Logging in to cpanel using root password warned you that you had logged in using root privs and you got a nice drop down where you could jump to any account's cpanel.

After changing my root password, the first domain set up on that server gets the nice drop down, and indeed full rights, despite using it's normal password. I also don't see the warning message about using root privs.

So, somehow, the domain's account has gained ROOT cpanel privs. Where is this set?

CPanel + Exim + User Level Filtering
whether our webhost has their configuration messed up, or if this is not genuinely possible with cpanel + exim + shared hosting.

Our email server is hosted with the web host, and what we want to do is to not allow certain users to be able to receive (And send) outgoing email to non-local domains e.g. they should only be able send and receive within our hosted domain, @mydomain.com .

Now, we've tried doing this using cpanel's user level filters and have setup the following:

Rules:
If Field To does not contain @mydomain.com OR
If Field From does not contain @mydomain.com

Action:

Fail with message.

We've tested these filters using combinations and they seem to be working as far as we can see on cpanel (it has the filter testing feature)

Now this works for people sending emails into our domain e.g. someone from hotmail tries sending emails to a user, and it bounces back.

But people from inside the domain can send emails to other domains even when they give valid results on the cpanel filter tester.

Mysql User Privilege Changed By Cpanel Or What
I am using Cpanel. One Cpanel account is backup. I use it to backup my database.

Under mysql, I gave this account ( backup ) many priviledges. But when the backup script ran, error said that backup account can not 'lock table'.

I gave "lock table' priviledge again and run the script, it is ok.
But after a while, when the script ran autmatically on daily basis, it lost the 'lock table' priviledge again.

I wonder if Cpanel is messing me up? What can I do about it? anyone knows?

How To Edit FTP User Permissions On A CPanel Account
My Pink Floyd website has a photo section of rare concert pictures that our members upload. We have about 3,000 of these pictures, that our members upload via an FTP server that is hosted on a simple cPanel web hosting account. Someone logged into the account and not only deleted all the pictures, but uploaded obscene pictures and index.html files to some really nasty stuff.

We delete all the obscene stuff, but before we re-upload all the pictures I need to know...

On a cPanel account is there a way to have the FTP User only able to upload files and not edit/delete/change? Somehow we can edit their permission?

I asked HostGator about this and the ChatTech said this cannot be done, and I was a bit surprised. I could easily do this on my own server, but i'm not sure where to start at the user level.

Backing Up The Server
We have a dedicated server with CPanel/WHM. It appears that the CPanel/WHM backup portion of the control panel is not functioning properly, as we just had an incident where all mySQL databases were deleted from the system and the last backup we had was from 03/31/08. This is not acceptable, as we need to have atleast at the min. weekly backups done of our system.

We are in need of a FREE 3rd Party (preferrably open source) solution where we can install on our Linux CentOS system to be able to have backups, and would like to have this software preferrably be able to backup to a remote location, but this is not required.

daily.0

daily.3
daily.4
daily.5
daily.6
monthly.0

Any idea if this can be done in windows? If not windows, is there an easy to use script I can set up on my linux computer?

Simultaneous FTP User- Cpanel/WHM/Pure-FTP, Dual Xeon 2.4, 1gRAM, Dedicated
Simultaneous FTP User Question - Cpanel/WHM/Pure-FTP, Dual Xeon 2.4, 1gRAM, Dedicated

Does the following dedicated server spec throw any flags for you when considering our intended future use?

DEDICATED SERVER SPEC
Dual Xeon 2.40 ghz.
1 gig RAM
INTENDED FUTURE USE

- We currently host 300 low volume websites on the server.

- We only use 40 gigs of data bandwidth per month. (1000 allotted)

- We developed a new software product that allows auto-updates 300kb of data each day.

- We expect up to 500 people to use this software and need to access our FTP daily, at different times of the day (random).

- We plan to embed the FTP information into the software.

The FTP access will be transparent to the user.

Does our dedicated server sound like it could handle this? My guess is yes.

Backing Up Using Rsync: Slow?
I want to back up my entire server, probably 50gb of data.

i have a 20mbit connection at home, and get 1.5+mbytes/second when pushing a file onto my home pc from the server via ftp, so i know the pipe between the two can handle the bandwidth.

i've set up rsync at home but for some reason the transfer rate does not go over 50-60kbytes/sec, i'm guessing cause the files are too small.

is this a problem with my rsync configuration? i havne't set any speed limits...

finally, is there some better solution than rsync to backup my server?

command i'm using for rsync:
rsync --links --backup --recursive /mydirectory myserver::backuplocation.

Backing Up MySQL VPS
I currently have 2 VPS accounts. The first one runs cPanel and hosts my website's files.

The second VPS hosts the mysql databases which the website uses. There are about 70 databases, each averaging about 120MB in size.

At current, i use sourceforge.net/projects/automysqlbackup/ to backup each database over two days. (This crashes the server briefly for about 10 minutes per day ). I then use rsync on both servers to backup everything to off-site location.

Obviously, I need to find a better solution. I was thinking about backing up the databases weekly instead. However, the 10 minute downtime period from the script will still happen.

Backing Up Entire Website

They told us that the entire server crashed and the backups were on the same server so we lost everthing. we actually did end up getting evertying back but it took nearly a week to get back online. they said they are now backing up everthing in a remote location so this wont happen again, but we dont want to put this in their hands anymore, we didnt even get everything back .htaccess, hidden files, subdomains were not backup up and lost. So we want to do our own backing up.

Is there some thing I can set up as a cron task to weekly automatically backup every single file on the server, and the database?

We think this would be very beinificial to us as we lost alot of money from this ordeal and we do not want it to happen again.

Disaster Recovery Plan And Backing Up One's Server
There is so much information on disaster recovery and backing up one's server, that I'm getting glassy-eyed trying to take it in. Maybe if I became an actual case study, and get some "group think" help, this thread could benefit many others in a similar situation.

Current Situation:

1. I'm a small hosting company, 5 years in existence, with about 350 clients. www.mlhi.net

2. Dedicated Linux server, PLESK CP w/unlimited domains license, fully managed at HostNexus (great guys). It does not have a RAID array (used to have that at Rackspace) but it does have a backup drive that everything is backed up to with a cron job every night.

3) In addition I have a Linux Sys Admin on retainer, www.linuxbox.co.uk (he is better than excellent). Two years of excellent server maintenance and security on top of the managed service I get at HostNexus.

4) I just bought a VPS plan at JauguarPC.com after much research (a lot of it here at WHT) and as they say "so far so good" with the ease of dealing with them. I have not setup anything there yet- just got the VPS provisioned a few days ago.

Fears and Concerns:

1. Data center destroyed/ my server burns up (including backup drive) etc etc.

2. DDOS attack (which did hit this data center a few months ago and I was down for hours)

3. If I had to FTP everything back to another server from my local, at 18 GB, it's not too cool.

Want to do this:

1. I want my Sys Admin to run a backup copy (and incrementals every night) to an identically configured VPS server at JaguarPC. Both servers are now running identical PLESK 8.4.

2. I want the fastest recovery possible without spending a ton of money. I know this means I don't get an "instant" recovery, but recovery within 24 hours is more than OK. None of my customers are ecommerce... just brochureware sites.

My "I'm not an expert" plan:

1. If primary server goes bye-bye forever, I can login to my BulkRegister/Enom account and change the child nameserver IPs to the IP's of the VPS. In 24 hours or less, every request for the nameservers would then be routed to the new server.

2. I can create an A record on every domain like www2.johndoeinsurance.com that would point to the IP at the VPS, so I can ease my mind anytime I want to make sure everything is safe and sound on the second server, and ready to go in an emergency.

How do I configure the DNS?

I control dns at Enom for about two-thirds of my customers. I have ALL domains pointed to ns.mlhi.net and ns2.mlhi.net. Here are my options??

1. I create two more child nameservers... ns3 and ns4 and have then pointed to the IPs at the new server, then update all the domains I control. The rest of the customers I can email and ask them to add the additional nameservers. I know... good luck on them doing it.

2. I change the ns2 IP to go to the new server. And I make sure when I make edits on a website during the day that I FTP to both servers.

3. I don't have any nameservers assigned to the new server. I just change the IP on the existing nameservers in the event of an emergency.

So when you got a website for a service and it says "$6 per month for 3 years" would you take that as they charge you monthly, $6?

Well Bluehost doesn't. They charged me $250 and I didn't realize what they were doing until the charge went through.

I called within 24 hours and spoke to billing. I cancelled the entire service. She said it was only a "hold" on my account and she would make the hold credit me back and it would be done within a few hours and that I would receive an email from her confirming. Well, I got another confirmation email NOT a we are cancelling the service email.

Then, one $250 charge dropped off... AND TWO MORE APPEARED.

In one of the confirmation emails they sent there was an email address for the help desk. So I emailed this to them. I am not speaking to them on the phone. I want it in writing this time. Two seconds after I sent the email I got an auto response telling me they don't read the email and I must formally put in a ticket.

I didn't think I would be able to since my account was supposed to be cancelled. Well, it did let me log in. She didn't cancel it and if she did she went and put it back in again twice.

DON'T BUY ANYTHING FROM THESE PEOPLE.
