Two Seperate Nameservers On One Server

Nov 26, 2007

I am currently using for example these nameservers:

ns1.mydomain.com
ns2.mydomain.com

but I am also thinking of offering hosting, and would like to setup seperate nameservers for example:

ns1.myhosting.com
ns2.myhosting.com

Is it possible to do this, with both sets of domains utilising the same dedicated server?

Would they all need seperate IPs, or can I use the same IP that ns1.mydomain.com is using for ns1.myhosting.com?

Why Is A Seperate Server For Mysql Recommended

Jan 4, 2007

a good deal of the price in buying servers frequently comes from a nice motherboard, chassis, etc. having to purchase those items twice is just taking away from other components you could be adding to one server-- more ram, more/faster cpu's, etc. not to mention the wasted overhead in just running the operating system twice.

considering all of those factors, wouldn't it be logical to build a nicer single server rather than two "okay" servers?

the only real advantages I see are

1) potentially httpd could be reachable when mysql isn't... but for something like vb, that's almost a moot point

2) at some point you're going to hit a point where buying a nicer CPU isn't really worth the money; spending twice the money for a 10% performance increase, etc. but it seems like multiple cpu's could still get around that.

Cpanel Domain Name Server (DNS) Setting For Email On 2 Seperate Server

Nov 7, 2009

This is the scenario, domain.com are setup on server1, however server2 also has the same profile of domain.com as we use ns3 and ns4 using domain.com. This works fine with the nameserver setup on server2.

However I encounter problems as the emails from server2 won't reach server1 as there are duplicate profile on server2.

My question is how do I setup the DNS in cpanel/whm from server2 so the emails from server2 will reach server1?

Server1 (www.domain.com)
ns1.domain.com
ns2.domain.com

Server2
ns3.domain.com
ns4.domain.com

Seperate Web Server And Db Server Or

Oct 24, 2009

im currently planning to launch a number of sites that may or may not take off. Basically my question is that most people tell me to seperate the web server and db server, and i believe this is because of interfering IO between the two, and the cpu not being able to alocate between both of them effectively. How effective do you think a Dual Xeon box would be to run apache,squid,php, and mysql. I figured my original plan was 2 servers (each xeons for the db with a raid1+0), but going a dual xeon seems like a decent choice since we would only need to pay for 1U at a colo with opportunity to move the db off of it later when we need to and replicate the webserver when needed. Let me know if im off my mark here. I didnt post req/sec or anything because this is just a seperate xeon boxes VS dual xeon single box.

Seperate Subnet For Network Devices And Servers

Jul 7, 2009

I would like to find out from users how they designed and layout their networks when it comes to subnets.

Currently we have 3 subnet's of different sizes which house our network equipment such as Switches, PDU's, Log Servers etc. but also on these same subnet's are servers which we provide web hosting and VPS services. We also have some clients on these subnets with dedicated servers.

I am curious about this network design. Is it acceptable to house our operational equipment such as switches, PDU's etc on these same subnets which has client access servers or should be obtain a small seperate subnet to house this equipment for security and isolation reasons.

Advantages Of VPS

Aug 16, 2008

I am on a reseller so I can manage the couple of websites I own and host a couple of friends. However, would I be better off with a VPS?

Would I still have an INODE limit?

Would I be able to remove DNS settings as I keep having to ask my host to do this for me so I can create an account in WHM.

Also, what are these packages like?

VPS 1

* 10GB UK Web Space
* 100GB Bandwidth
* 128MB RAM
* Host unlimited domains
* RAID 1 Protected
* £15.00 Monthly Cost
* £180.00 Annual Cost

VPS 2

* 25GB UK Web Space
* 200GB Bandwidth
* 384MB RAM
* Host unlimited domains
* RAID 1 Protected
* £25.00 Monthly Cost
* £300.00 Annual Cost

Seperate Email Accounts When Hosting Multiple Domains

Mar 14, 2008

I just tried westhost. Very nice folks, good reviews, worth a shot. I signed up for a regular hosting account that allows multiple domains. That didn't work for email. An email user has access to email under that users name for all domains attached to the account. so you can't have info@abc.com, info@def.com, etc. One info@ per account. I did find a hack for it, but it wouldn't work with web mail.

So now I need to find a host that separates mail by domain WITH webmail.

This is getting so tiresome. I have a VPS with "the planet", but so many things just don't work out of the box. I've been fighting with them about PHP not sending mail for months. DNS problems everytime I setup a new domain. There has to be an easier way!

15 domains, everything needs to work. I don't want to manage anything. No resellers. The company I host with will own the data center.

Load Balanced Servers Or Seperate Apache/MySQL

May 29, 2007

I currently have one server a
Dual Xeon 5130 2GHZ (woodcrest)
2GB Ram.
Running cPanel/WHM

Now I run a website that is VERY PHP & MySQL Intensive and MySQL is ALWAYS the top of the process list, hogging a ton of usage. It's getting to the point where the site is needed a second server and I know there's a few options; but I'm not sure which one would be the best.

They way I see it my two options are getting a 2nd server and setting up the two to do load balancing, or getting a 2nd server and setting one up for just Apache and the Other for MySQL and using the 2nd as a remote SQL server.

If I do the Apache on a seperate server would I need such a powerful server? And if I also would want to upgrade this server along with getting a 2nd server would I be better of upgrading to 4GB of RAM or upgrading the processors?

Is It Possible To Have Seperate Control Panel For Every Site In My Hosting Account

Dec 18, 2007

i have a hosting account which hosts a couple of my sites. Now i have contracted a new site project to a programmer.

I want to give him access to the control panel so that he can manage the site completely(setup database, mail etc) without letting him on any of the info on my other two sites. For my current hosting account it means providing him with
my hosting account administrative login, that means he has access to other sites too.

The other option is providing him only a ftp account to upload files only to the particular directory for that project. But the problem with this is that then he cannot setup a database etc. on his own, he needs to provide me sql script which i then use to create the database from the control panel.

Can a reseller hosting account solve my problem..... seperate control panel (administrate all things like databse, mail, password protecting files) for each site?

Any other suggestions, this is the first time i bought hosting.

Any reading material(books or online) to get familiar with each aspect of running and managing a website(mailservers, security, dns for site, backups etc. etc.)?

LiteSpeed Advantages Vs. Apache

Jan 24, 2009

I know most webhosts run Apache and it seems to server their needs very well. However LiteSpeed is new and fast, assuming you have relatively static content. At least that's what I've heard. Beyond this, I don't know much, though a year ago I worked with a guy who hosted an iPhone software repository (smallish files, huge demand), and he put LiteSpeed on the servers to deal with the load. Running at 30+ Mbps, with spikes above 60, the server never went above 0.2 load as far as I remember, and it was just a 2GB Core 2 Duo E6300 1.86 GHz machine.

Disadvantages (and Advantages) Of Non-root VPS

Oct 9, 2007

I've been leaning toward going with WestHost for a medium-sized project. They offer VPS without root access, though, and much of the advice in the "HOW TO: Secure and Optimize your VPS" thread requires running commands as root.

My experience has all been with colocating my own servers in a data center, with everything accessible when I log in as root (though of course I ordinarily logged in as a normal user instead). This was three or four years ago, and a lot has changed since then.

Can someone who's up on this stuff please describe the pros and cons of non-root VPS service such as WestHost provides? Cost seems to be one advantage :-} and I imagine it's wise for inexpert Webmasters not to have a completely wide-open system. Are there other pluses to non-root VPS that aren't as obvious?

Most importantly, what kind of operations will I not be able to carry out if I go with WestHost or a similar non-root VPS host? Can I reasonably expect the hosting service to perform the kind of locking-down described in WHT's tutorial on VPS security?

I'll be asking similar questions of WestHost's support people but thought it would be a good idea to ask people without a stake in either the root-access or the non-root way of doing things.

Advantages Of Using A Separate Host For Images

Aug 6, 2008

I'm starting to see this, or maybe it's always existed, but it seems like bigger sites are hosting their images on external servers. I've even seen some sites use Flickr as the host for all of their images. I guess for Flickr that means you have a guarenteed image CMS, but I really don't see that as why Flickr was created.

I'm sure there are bandwidth advantages, and maybe that's the main reason. Is there a point where the traffic gets so high that moving images off site would improve load times and sever loads? Is it a worthwhile endeavor for smaller sites? I'm curious to see what the thoughts are on this trend.

VPS Advantages Over Shared & Recommended Hosts

Sep 5, 2008

Is it possible to get a rough description of the benefits of a VPS host over a shared host?

1) Support. Should support with a VPS host be better than my current shared provider? They offer live chat and a ticketing system. Tickets can take hours to get a response, live chat minutes but often there are no support operaters to answer the question.

2) Uptime. Will uptime be improved upon? My current host tends to range from 97%-99% in a month. Importantly will it suffer from soft outages where parts of the account are down (such as MySQL or http)?

3) Traffic. What levels of traffic will base VPS packages handle? Will a few semi active forums (say max 20 users on 3 forums) be manageable alongside several PHP/MySQL galleries and several hundred normal PHP pages?

4) Load. Does the load usage of other customers on the same server effect your account in the same way it does in a shared environment? Can one user bog down the entire server for everyone else?

5) Management. How much control is given to a user in managed VPS environment. Can you restart OS yourself (and do things like edit the firewall blocks)? Do you have to keep the OS (Linux in my case) and things like Apache and PHP up to date yourself or is that done for you.

6) Usage Policies. Are the usage policies in place in a VPS environment (limiting the amount of CPU process and memory you can use). If yes are they higher than in a shared environment.

Is it possible to get a little more on a few of the hosts I've looked at (if possible I'd like to be below the $50 a month mark).

JaguarPC ($20 / $40)
WiredTree ($50)
LiquidHost ($60)

Is it a case of picking any of these and getting a similar support and hosting service?

WiredTree seems to offer a decent compromise of price against value. Given that my site is still pretty small at the moment, would the smallest JaguarPC package be a better fit (so I'm not spending money for specs I'm not using).

Unfortunately disk space is a fairly big factor as the site uses quite a few image and small video files (I'm using something like 2GB at the moment but this would increase fairly rapidly over time). Does that mean a shared host is better suited for my needs?

Additional Competitive Advantages For Hosting Packages

Aug 11, 2008

As far as I see each hosting company uses various methods to make customers buy their domains. They can provide free domains, free Fantastico scripts, website building software, templates etc. I am planning to launch my hosting company really soon. Also I think to include free internet marketing services in some hosting packages. I am just wondering if such internet marketing program can be considered as a significant competitive advantage stimulating customers to make a purchase?

Main Advantages Of VPS Over Shared Reseller Hosting

Oct 1, 2007

I know to some of you this may sound like a totally silly question. But I would like to know what the main advantages are if you have a VPS instead of a shared reseller hosting.

I notice some of the basic VPS packages give you 512MB of memory. Other than that, the rest of the stats seem to be along the lines of what you might get in an advanced reseller hosting plan such as one available from Reseller Zoom.

I am looking into VPS as a dedicated server is a little over my budget, however, I am not entirely clear what makes VPS better.

Improve Performance- Web Server, SSH Server, And Mail Server

May 8, 2007

I've got a VPS which is serving as the main server for a number of sites. Web Server, SSH Server, and Mail Server.

What I've got running:

Apache2, PHP5, MySQL5, Dovecot, Postfix

One of the sites is a growing forum with a MASSIVE photo album. This is the site where I notice the most slowness.

Changing the server software is not an option - Only optimization.

Plesk 11.x / Windows :: Don't Have Root Access To Server As It Is A Webfusion Dedicated Server

Oct 16, 2013

I have Plesk 11.5 (service provider mode) on a Windows 2008 server IIS7.Most of my sites are developed in .asp and therefore i use a custom 500-100.asp error page that check s the IP of the visitor then displays either a friendly error, or if its my IP a full error of what has happened (it also emails me the error). This allows me to debug pages easily whilst developing and to keep an eye on anyone trying SQL Injection hacks on my sites (as the error and email also have session variables and IP address).I dont have root access to the server as it is a Webfusion dedicated server.I have following the Plesk documentation -

1) Switch on custom errors for the subscription
2) Look in virtual directories and navigate to error documents
3) Find the error in question (500:100) and change it to point at either a file or URL

FILE - I had the data centre add in the 500-100.asp error page in to the virtual template so that my page is available in the list of virtual files - this didn't work but that maybe because its not a static page??

URL - when i add the path it says its incorrect, if i add a fully qualified address, it accepts it but it doesn't work.give me a specific example of the URL that can be entered relative to the root as the format in the documentation isn't accepted. The last step is to restart IIS which is also an issue as i cant seem to do this from the Plesk panel..It is as if it isn't catching the 500:100 error, and only catching the general 500 error??

However upon installing the urchin software on the new server and running it (localhost:9999), I am presented with An Action Items Page, and these following choices

Obtain Demo License

Activate Pre-Purchased License

I choose ‘Activate Pre-Purchased License’ pop in the Serial number and complete the registration then…

An error has occured during your transaction, please use the back button and correct the problem. The specific error message is:

• Unable to generate a license. Some possible reasons:

Your serial code is currently active <<< How do I disable it and use it on another server?

So all I want to do is deactivate the serial and reactivate it on another server.

Does anyone have experience with this or a similar problem or have a solution to this problem. Any help be most appriciated.

Or even a Contact Number so that i can get some one over the phone!
