How To Run DNS Server On My Own Hosting?
I recently came from a VPS server where my provider gave me the names of their DNS servers which I then pointed my domain name to with GoDaddy. I recently signed up for a dedicated server and asked my provider for their DNS servers. They replied that I needed to run DNS on my server. Is this normal for dedicated hosting providers? Do I just need to point my domain to the public ip address on this server or do I need to load/configure DNS on my server? Is there sofware that I need to install?

Dedicated Server - Run Windows & Linux
Can I run both Windows & Linux on a dedicated server? I currently have a website hosted on a shared hosting Linux web server (uses PHP, MySQL). I want to use RED5, which seems a bit tricky to set up. Why Windows? I would feel more comfortable installing RED5 on a windows server (I think it'd be easier for me, no experience with Linux command line etc.). Why Linux? I'd prefer to keep the existing PHP/MySQL website on Linux because I have Apache specific settings.

I have been searching everywhere trying to find a tutorial but It is not going anywhere. Basically I need to create 2 nameservers for Godaddy and pretty much so when i type http://mysite.com it goes to my site. I can access everything from http://myip and everything works. Now is there a step by step on how to actually do it in the DNS Manager? I need help like what IP address do I use is it the router ip? The external IP?

I am currently experimenting with windows server however I can't work out how to setup my DNS correctly. I have setup a computer running Windows Server 2008 and Active Directory on my home LAN, the server has the following details: Name: server1 Domain home.mydomain.com Full Computer Name: server1.home.mydomain.com IP: 192.168.2.1 I am unsure how I should setup DNS for my domain name and locally for the server. I would like the servers full computer name to be resolved inside and outside the LAN. Can anyone point me in the right direction for this kind of setup?

Windows Server 2003 AD / DNS
We have two Windows Server 2003 machines as active directory controllers and DNS servers for our in-house operations. For our purposes, let's say the domain name is example.com. Both servers have DNS, and example.com is stored in Active Directory to allow us to use the benefits this provides. Our issue is probably simple, but I'm not sure how to fix it. Let's call server one EX1, and server two EX2. These have local IPs of 192.168.1.111 and 192.168.1.112, respectively. We want example.com to be resolved to an external IP address (for web hosting), let's say 1.2.3.4. The problem is, the two domain controllers keep registering example.com with their internal IP addresses .111 and .112, so the DNS round-robins between 1.2.3.4 and the two internal servers, which aren't web servers. Is there a way we can get those DNS controllers to stop registering their internal IPs as example.com?

Server Specs To Run SharePoint Server 2007
I've recently had a number of enquiries from hosted clients and potential customers requesting SharePoint hosting for use in connection with their current packages. I've used Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 in the past, but am specifically looking into the latest and greatest release of SharePoint to date to install - SharePoint Server 2007. I've read over Microsoft's server requirements for running SharePoint, who recommend a 3GHz or higher processor and 2GB RAM for web servers, and 4GB RAM for SQL servers. To me, this seems ridiculous for the small number of clients I'll ever be hosting, and who will only have a small number of SharePoint users per site. Those with any experience of SharePoint hosting please share your opinions of SharePoint hosting on various server configurations, as I'm interested to know how it performs. As I'll only have a small user base, would running SharePoint fully on one existing IIS 6 web server do the trick? What processor should this machine have, and amount of RAM to run SharePoint well?

Server Is Over-run By Spam
I'm hosted with elitehosts.com, they've been absolutely GREAT for 2 years now. However, one of my sites gets SOOO much spam email that the host cannot handle it. Apparently the limit is like 500/hour. The result is email for the domain is no longer dependable. Senders to the domain get undeliverable bouncebacks. Is there anyway to fix the problem? The server side spam filters catch the email, but doesn't solve the problem of all the incoming mail. Is finding a new host (if even just for email) my only option?

Do You Run An NTP Server For Your Network
I'm curious to see who here runs time services for their network / their machines. Also, if you do run time services, do you use a Stratum 0 time source (GPS, WWVB, DCF77, CDMA, et al) or do you just sync with pool.ntp.org? Is your NTP server in pool.ntp.org? What I'm really curious to find out is if anyone here provides stratum 1 time sources (a time source that is directly sync'd to an external reference clock, like a GPS). And have you even contemplated such a thing?

Host Will Only Update Domain Name Server (DNS) In Batches, Takes Several Hours For A DNS Change, Normal?
Host will only update DNS in batches, takes several hours for a DNS change, is that normal? Well today my mail stopped working and it turns out the A record for mail was deleted. How it got deleted I don't know. I called my host and after speaking to 2 techs, they said that have added my request to a batch, and that would update in a few hours. I said to him, batch? What can't you do it instantly? He said thats not the way their DNS works and any DNS change would affect thousands of other sites they are hosting. Does anyone know what kind of dns system these people could possibly have where they can not reload a single zone? And by affected, I think he means the sites will go down for a minute or so, while it relaods every zone. Is this really the case, or are these people just idiots?

And is there any web GUI that can be provided to the users to manage their VPS, e.g. check the traffic had been used. Q2. About windows license, I heard that If I run a Windows DataCenter version in the main node, then I do not need license for the vps. Does it mean when I install the windows 2003 as a guest, it will no longer require us to input the CD-KEY?

Cheap Reliable Server That Can Run PHP/MySQL With Plesk
I currently have a decent server that runs around 10 websites, but 1 of those sites contributes around 99% of the total traffic. This large site is being moved onto a new server, leaving the remaining 9 sites rattling around on this big (and expensive!) server. So, I am now looking for a smaller server to handle the other smaller sites. They get minimal traffic - around 5k uniques a day.

Using Domain Name Server (DNS) And A Backup Server
I currently have two VPS servers, each with 2 DNS names running on them as follows: dns1.mydomain.com (on Server A) dns2.mydomain.com (on Server A) dns3.mydomain.com (on Server B) dns4.mydomain.com (on Server B) I have websites running on each server and I would like to have something set-up so that when one server goes down, the other server displays a nice page saying the website is unavailable currently and will be back shortly - you know, something nicer then the normal "Server Not Found" default messages. What is the best way to do this? If I have CLIENTDOMAIN.COM and put them on Server A and they use all 4 DNS server names, will the top two DNS names always be used by people finding the website, and the bottom two choices only be used if the top two can't be found? I believe I have to create an account on Server B for them as well, just only placing the temporary page within the account, rather then a whole copy of their website. Correct?

Media Server Running Windows Server 2003 Std: Yes Or No
Most people probably run Linux on their media servers, but since I don't know much about Linux and the media server we have is unmanaged, I was wondering how you guys feel about running Windows Server 2003 Std on a media server instead of Linux. We'll only be using the server to host Flash video files (.flv) and we'll be serving those vids on websites hosted on other servers, resulting in approx. 50,000-100,000 media views per day (filesizes range from approx. 5MB to 10MB). We don't want to run Windows Media Services, just a Web server (IIS6) and have the Flash video players on the external websites take care of the streaming/downloading part.
